Show moreThe current study is presented as an exploratory network analysis of personality psychology using a network composed of 54 source papers and their references. The articles used were papers from the Annual Review of Psychology journal, which dealt with the subject of personality, from 1950 to 2012. References from the source papers were pulled and then mapped onto a network that graphically illustrated the links between different citations. From the network it was possible to deduce, both visually and statistically, distinctively clustered communities, the relative influence of certain psychologists, and the researchers that bridged disciplinary gaps within the field of personality research. By using digital humanities methods such as network analysis it is possible to better understand and articulate the history and growth of personality psychology.

Podophyllotoxin has been under extensive biochemical investigation since the discovery of its biological activity as a strong microtubule destabilizing mitotic agent. Although these antineoplastic compounds have shown significant activity as cancerous cell growth inhibitors, they lack selectivity and are thus extremely toxic to healthy cells. This has led to a recent interest in the synthesis of Podophyllotoxin analogues in hopes of optimizing the biological selectivity and potency of these semi-synthetic derivatives. The objective of my research in the Roche group is to generate a library of these derivatives for subsequent biological assays to determine their potential as chemotherapeutic agents. In total I have synthesized 22 Podophyllotoxin analogues. Of these 22 derivatives, 14 have been biologically evaluated and 4 were observed to possess promising anti-cancer activity and are currently undergoing further evaluation.

The two main strategies to construct new scaffolds are to revisit underexploited or forgotten reactions or to devise new transformations. We are exploring a unique and underexploited reaction, the Himbert–Henn cycloaddition, to produce complex molecular scaffolds in a single step (strategy 1). In a second novel approach, we are modifying the Hantzsch 4-component reaction (4CR) by incorporating an α-amino ester residue to construct new molecules (strategy 2). Both of these reactions have great potential to synthesize novel and chiral molecules from proteinogenic α-amino esters. These unprecedented and complex polycyclic molecules have potential application in medicinal chemistry and natural product synthesis. 4-aza-podophyllotoxins obtained by the Hantzsch-4CR have been proven to be potent as anti-leukemia, anti-colon cancer, and vascular disrupting agents (with nanomolar activity).

Show moreBackground: Marine mammals are ideal sentinel species for human health due to exposure to the same oceans and consumption of the same foods. There have been many studies which demonstrate that wild Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins are exposed to high levels of contaminants which lead to a suppressed immune system and are therefore more susceptible to opportunistic infections, many of which are zoonotic diseases. However, nearly no research has been done on determining defects in the immune cell population of dolphins, especially Dendritic Cells DCs that are essential for initiating an immune response. Hypothesis: We hypothesize phenotypic and functional differences in the Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells PBMC, including DC precursors, of wild dolphins as compared to managed dolphins. Methods: Specifically in this study, we have used terrestrial-specific antibodies and growth factors to characterize immune cells in PBMC and to generate monocyte-derived DCs. Results: We have identified cross-reactive terrestrial antibodies that could detect immune cell subsets within PBMC, including B cells, T cells, NK cells, monocytes and APCs. Interestingly, using these antibodies we found significant changes in immune cell subsets within PBMC of wild and managed dolphins. Finally among the terrestrial DC growth factors tested we found rat GM-CSF and IL-4 generated DCs expressing higher levels of CD11c, CD14, CD40, CD80, CD86, MHC I and MHC II. Conclusion: Our findings allow us to further study defects in the immune cells, especially DCs, in response to environmental contaminants.

Parasite roles within wild tortoise populations are largely unknown, despite growing evidence they may pose significant health risks. There is a large gopher tortoise population in the fragmented, poorly maintained Florida Atlantic University Preserve (FAUP). A separate Martin County population is at Jonathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP) in a higher quality habitat. We hypothesized there would be higher intestinal parasite loads in FAUP tortoises than JDSP tortoises, due to overcrowding. Several methods were used to determine parasite species and infection intensities. Fecal flotations revealed moderate to high Strongyle and Hookworm intensities in FAUP tortoises; in contrast, low Hookworm and moderate Strongyle intensities were seen in JDSP tortoises. Comparing infection intensities to degree of crowding is important to optimize management strategies of these threatened species.

However, little is known about their health significance. Two study sites, Blazing Star Preserve (BSP), and Pine Jog Preserve (PJP), differ in their management. The goal of this study is: (1) determine, if any, haemogregarina parasitemia levels of the gopher tortoise population in each site and (2) detect any additional hemoparasite species. We hypothesize that paristemia will be higher in BSP due to increased overcrowding and lack of prescribed fires. This study will benefit current conservation and management practices for gopher tortoises and provide a baseline study for intracellular parasites.

Carcasses of four feral swine were placed in cages in direct sunlight, whereby soil samples were taken prior to and following seven days of decomposition. Bacterial DNA was then isolated from the soil samples and amplified via polymerase-chain reaction. Further metagenomic analysis was conducted by an outside agency using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) amplicon sequencing to determine the composition of the bacterial community. A relationship between the stages of decomposition and the anatomy of bacterial communities involved was determined, which helps to elucidate the process of decomposition.

One population resides in a fragmented and non-fire maintained site, Blazing Star, and the other in a fire maintained site, Pine Jog. Fire is a natural factor in these habitats reducing canopy cover and killing parasite eggs. The lack of fire in Blazing Star can lead to overgrowth of vegetation, forcing tortoises to crowd where lower vegetation is found. We hypothesize that tortoises from Blazing Star will have a higher degree of intestinal parasites, when compared to those from Pine Jog due to potential crowding. Data is currently being collected, and may provide insight to improve future management and conservation practices.

To detect hemoparasites, blood was collected from tortoises at FAUP and JDSP. Blood smears revealed intracellular parasites and inclusions at both sites. Packed cell volumes were done to assess whether tortoises were anemic; results found tortoises were not anemic during that sampling period. This study will provide baseline data for blood-borne infections in two south Florida gopher tortoise populations.

An integrated modeling tool was used in this study to 1 track energy consumption, production, and resource extraction, 2 track greenhouse gases emissions and 3 analyze emissions for local and regional air pollutions.
The model was used in this study for short and long term energy and GHG emissions reduction analysis for the state of Florida. The integrated modeling methodology will help to evaluate the alternative energy scenarios and examine emissions-reduction strategies.
The mitigation scenarios have been designed to describe the future energy strategies. They consist of various demand and supply side scenarios.
One of the GHG mitigation scenarios is crafted by taking into account the available renewable resources potential for power generation in the state of Florida to compare and analyze the GHG reduction measure against “Business As Usual” and “Florida State Policy” scenario.
Two more “integrated” scenarios, “Electrification” and “Efficiency and Lifestyle” are crafted through combination of various mitigation scenarios to assess the cumulative impact of the reduction measures such as technological changes and energy efficiency and conservation.

The long term goal of this study is to develop a visible spectrometer accessible to students using readily available and inexpensive components. To accomplish this goal, a prototype instrument was calibrated. Resolution was determined by recording data for samples that absorb visible light at specific wavelengths. To assess the utility of the spectrometer for quantitative analysis, signal intensities were obtained as a function of sample concentration.

The red imported fire ant RIFA, Solenopsis invicta is a generalist, omnivorous exotic ant from South America. It has been causing ecological, agricultural, and economical havoc in the USA and other parts of the world. Solenopsis invicta preys on pipped eggs and hatchlings of ground nesting birds and reptiles and they are also found on sea turtle nesting beaches. We hypothesized that there will be a change in the fire ant species distribution at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge SPNWR after the first follow-up survey done in 2010, and at Jack Bay after the baseline study in 2011; both nesting beaches are in St Croix, US Virgin Islands. Baited index cards with tuna were set out for approximately two hours then ants were collected in separate marked bags. They were frozen then preserved in ethanol and finally identified. Solenopsis invicta was the most common exotic species at SPNWR. It was significantly more abundant p0.02 than the other fire ant species, Solenopsis geminata which was more abundant in both the 2010 survey and the baseline survey in 2006 at SPNWR. Neither of the fire ant species was found at Jack Bay. This increase in RIFA can become a serious threat to the next generation of sea turtles if its abundance continues to increase at SPNWR.

On December 17th, 2014, President Obama made a televised-speech on “normalizing relationship with Cuba,” instead of continuing an “outdated approach [that] has failed to advance our interests.” This study will examine and analyze the attitudes of Hispanics living in the United States’ towards the lifting of the Cuban Embargo. We are interested on the Hispanic population because they represent one of the largest and fastest-growing minority groups in the United States. We conducted telephone and online surveys of 500 Hispanics around the country. Our findings indicate that Hispanics have statistically significant different perspectives on lifting the Embargo, expanding trade and reestablishing diplomatic relations depending on their age, gender and other socio-demographic factors.

Show moreHistorically, Hispanics have been the ethnic minority, in the United States, with the highest rate of adults without health care insurance. Before the Affordable Care Act passed in 2013, 36 percent of working-age Hispanics were uninsured in the United States. After the bill was passed, the percent of uninsured Hispanics in the population declined to 23 percent in June 2014. This study examines the impact of the Affordable Care Act implementation on the Hispanic population. We conducted a survey of 500 Hispanics nationwide to test the hypothesis on the dissimilarity in health care coverage and affordability among Hispanics males and females. Our results revealed a significant disparity in health care insurance coverage and affordability between Hispanic males and females. The dissimilarity in coverage and affordability between genders has continued after the passing of the Affordable Care Act, a point often overlooked.

Many may assume that there is no difference in survey responses conducted online or over the phone. However, evidence supports that respondents give more extreme responses over the telephone than an online survey. We would like to test if what has been found in previous research holds for the Hispanic population, since it is the fastest growing ethnic minority in the United States; therefore they are impacting the culture, the marketplace, and politics within the country. We conducted our analysis by surveying 500 Hispanics nationwide using telephone interviews and online surveys in order to compare the difference in responses between the two modes of data collection. Our analysis supports that there a statistically significant difference in respondents behavior between online surveys and telephone interviews.

From the research collected, we will create a cohesive navigational system that makes travel easier for visitors, students, and faculty. The new navigational system will comprise of a redesigned directory, numeric building signage, route markers, and an instruction manual.
