The emotional Stroop task is an information processing approach that assesses emotion. College students completed a neutral and a spider-word emotional Stroop task in the presence of a fear stimulus, a disgust stimulus or nostimulus for control participants. Following the Stroop tasks, participants underwent a Behavioral Approach Task with the stimulus present during the Stroop task. Show moreThe emotional Stroop task is an information processing approach that assesses emotion. College students completed a neutral and a spider-word emotional Stroop task in the presence of a fear stimulus, a disgust stimulus or nostimulus for control participants. Following the Stroop tasks, participants underwent a Behavioral Approach Task with the stimulus present during the Stroop task. Participants were asked to come back for a second session where the Stroop tasks and Behavioral Approach Task was repeated in the presence of the opposite stimulus seen in the first session. Although not statistically significant, the findings of this study suggest that spider phobics take a longer time to color name spider words on the emotional Stroop task than non-phobics in the presence of a disgust stimulus or in the absence of a stimulus. However, they appear to perform about the same as non-phobics in the presence of a feared stimulus.

A crucial aspect of captive animal care is enrichment, ranging from simple additions of flora to complicated foraging puzzles. Enrichments are vital in creating an environment for animals that is similar to their wild habitat and eliciting natural behaviors. Enrichments are vital in creating an environment for animals that is similar to their wild habitat and eliciting natural behaviors. Enrichment is also used to inhibit unnatural or harmful behaviors, like pacing. Commonly, enrichment techniques are not scientifically tested, and the universality of enrichments is rarely scrutinized. This study explores the universality of a "Snak'n'Trim", a hollow ball 10 inches in diameter with a 1 inch opening for food items to be inserted into the ball. Four bears, (two male, two female) were observed for ten weeks, five in the summer and five in the winter. Daily observations were made during baseline and enrichment trials. Behavior frequency was calculated and results indicate a significant (p<.01) difference between baseline and enrichment trials, providing evidence for the efficacy of the Snak'n'Trim.

Salerno that the Constitution does not entitle defendants to bail and allowed federal courts to deny bail if they deem the defendant a threat to the community. However, both history and the current problems in the bail system demonstrate the Court erred in its ruling. Contrary to Salerno, the 8th Amendment was intended to provide a right to bail for all defendants who posed no threat to the judicial process. In order to protect essential rights of due process and presumption of innocence, Salerno ought to be overturned, a right to bail ought to be found within the Excessive Bail Clause, and this right should be incorporated to the states.

Using community structure of the scholarship of the journals Psychology of Women Quarterly (PWQ) and Feminism & Psychology, we examine and seek to understand the empirical structure of feminist psychology. An analysis of these two journals by decade will help determine whether the scholarship of feminist psychology has changed as much as women’s studies. In doing so, one can also address the question of how psychological is women’s studies (and vice versa).

BWS rehabilitates native Florida vertebrates that are injured or orphaned and houses others that cannot be released back into the wild. Of the 13 ant species found, two may pose a threat to the animals at BWS: the little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) and the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). W. auropunctata, known for stinging the eyes of vertebrates, was the most prevalent species, found at 40% of the baits. S. invicta, known for its powerful sting, occurred at 7% baits. Facilities that house animals outdoors, such as zoos and wildlife rehab centers, should take care to ensure the animals are kept safe from possible attack by ants.

Although, sleep behavior has been studied with individual fish, the effects of social interactions on sleep has not been studied in any fish species. Astyanax mexicanus offers a model to study sleep because it has multiple morphs derived from a common ancestor. We investigated sleep in Pachón cavefish and surface fish by comparing sleep in individual fish to those in social groups. We discovered that when Pachón cavefish are placed in a social group do not display differences in sleep relative to Pachón fish in isolation. In contrast, surface fish behaved significantly differently in social groups compared to non-social surface fish groups. This study is the first to demonstrate that sociality effects sleep and fish, and suggests this social regulation of sleep was lost in cavefish evolution.

Through a comprehensive literature review, this study focuses on empirically supported ways to increase individual pro-environmental behavior (PEB). We found environmental education (EE) is a useful approach to this, particularly when we implement it younger and for longer periods of time. Informal EE is another prime focus as it shows more success than formal EE alone. Connection to nature (CN) is shown to predict PEB as well. Since this study focuses on ways to change behavior, we looked at how to increase CN. Research suggests that increasing experiences with nature increases CN and, subsequently, PEB. Again, this is particularly useful when implemented during childhood. This review suggests more research attention should be placed on these methods in supporting environmental behavior.

Several models of burnout have been proposed, but Christina Maslach’s (1976) model continues to be the most prominent, with her Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) remaining the most commonly used burnout assessment tool. According to her model, burnout is made up of three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. Multiple studies have found that burnout is most highly associated with factors involving an excess of job demands and a lack of personal and professional support. Prolonged burnout is associated with decreased effectiveness on the job, multiple health problems, and an increased risk of substance abuse. Burnout researchers have found evidence which points to increased burnout levels among mental health workers, though a few studies contain evidence that mental health workers may not be at a higher risk of burnout than employees in other fields.

In direct contrast to this style is the style of surrealist film, which depict dreamlike images and operate in a fashion that abandons the 'real' and no longer follows the rules of traditional storytelling constructs. Fusing these two styles into a short film, I aim to artistically explore the phenomenon of productivity, procrastination and purpose. My thesis will document my rationale, a critical analysis, and feature the process of this project.

Although the pastoral poem's intrinsic formulation—a latent yearning for a lost time and space—has stayed constant, the minuscule shifts in what constitutes this idyllic respite reveal a great deal about the era it was written. The notion of a Golden Age illustrates society's ideals and as such juxtaposes the banality of quotidian life with highly idealized aesthetical aspirations that the poet is attempting to escape through pastoral poetry. By focusing on different literary movements with particular emphasis on the Spanish Siglo de Oro and the British Romantic period I aim to demonstrate how the contemporary issues—i.e. political unrest and the burgeoning industrial revolution—shape different variations of pastoral poems that constitute the distinctive yet elusive national Golden Age.

To compare the fish biodiversity over time as well as between reefs sites, a non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analyses was used. To evaluate general changes, a t-test was used to compare the total abundance of fish between 2003 and 2018. The results of the NMDS show that the reefs’ fish assemblages do not significantly differ over time. Then, using the years as replicates, the t-test showed a few families differed on an individual basis. The results of this study show that the two selected reefs maintain similar fish stocks.

In my thesis, I examine the health narratives of people living with SLE. Health narratives are introspective autobiographical accounts of illness. I selected internet blogs by three women living with SLE in order to understand how the internet facilitates the synthesis and sharing of these health narratives. Blogs have been utilized by many with chronic illness as a pathway to public forum for both communal celebration of health milestones, as well as commiseration and empathy-seeking. Through the analysis of three blogs by women with SLE, I argue against the previous notion that the formation of health narratives are a promotion of “success stories,” and support the original concept of health narratives as continual “progress stories.”

Biased agonism refers to a ligand dependent selectivity for specific down stream signaling pathways, which can be used as a model of receptor function in effort to develop safer analgesics. By changing the ligand, activated G-protein-coupled receptors can be manipulated to activate desired intracellular pathways, which results in positive clinical effects, e.g. analgesia, without activation of pathways that result in negative clinical effects, e.g. respiratory suppression and dependency. This thesis project will explore the in vitro and in vivo results of bias at the 𝜇-opioid receptor (𝜇OR), specifically investigating G-protein-preferential activation with reduced βarrestin2 recruitment, a regulatory protein responsible for many negative effects.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of concentrative meditation on memory for positively, negatively, and neutrally valenced visual stimuli. In the current study, undergraduate student participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: concentrative meditation or mind-wandering meditation (active control). Participants were presented with positive, neutral, and negative still images and completed a free recall task. We hypothesized that participants in the concentrative meditation condition would perform best at free recall memory tasks and that participants in both conditions would remember emotionally-valenced stimuli best. Findings suggest that participants remembered more emotionally-valenced stimuli than neutral stimuli. Contrary to expectations, the mind-wandering active control condition performed better at free recall memory tasks than the concentrative meditation condition.

Summary measures of population health provide a way to present information about both mortality and morbidity of a given population as a single metric. This project utilized gretl, an open-source statistical package, to model the data using ordinary least squares (OLS) in order to determine if there is a correlation between health, which was quantified using summary measures of population health, and child labor. The regression analysis showed that there is a significant correlation between child labor and health adjusted life expectancy (HALE) at birth, but not between child labor and disability adjusted life years (DALYs).
