- L' idee de l'amour dans le couple chez Beauvoir.
- Creator
- Grosjean, Marie-Pierre., Florida Atlantic University, Hokenson, Jan W.
- Abstract/Description
-
One of the constants in Beauvoir's work is her lifelong attention to the phenomenon of love and the idea of the couple. In her philosophy as well as in her fiction, she develops a binary concept of love. On the one hand is "authentic love," connoting respect and reciprocity; on the other is "inauthentic love," a function of conquest and annexation. Because of her adherence to the tenets of Existentialism, Beauvoir, the feminist, skillfully negotiates between the notions of love and freedom.

Most importantly, he explored beyond this conceptual domain to an even more essential source of creative expression---the realm of the ineffable. Bernstein's circle metaphor represents this paradoxical, transcendental sphere. This thesis extrapolates the profound philosophic threads inferred by Bernstein's lectures, and analyzes the developing logic of his metaphysical-aesthetic Weltanschauung.

The objective of this research is to develop a USBL system capable of estimating a source location transmitting frequency-hopped tones sequences. Such sequences are characteristic of spread spectrum signaling used in underwater acoustic communication network. It must be able to provide azimuth and elevation of a modem-type source with an accuracy of 0.3 degrees; for both angles using the synchronization stage of the transmission. The acoustic antenna is composed of four transducers arranged as a tetrahedron. Using the model of Quazi and Lerro, which provides an expression for the variance of the bearing angle, azimuth and elevation of the transmitter are estimated employing maximum likelihood estimation. This system is simulated, tested and calibrated in a tank. Simulated results satisfy the requirement with a SNR of 32dB and 8 symbols. The latest experimental measurements present an accuracy of 3 degrees.

It offers an example of the short story cycle through repeated and developed characters, recurring themes, imagery, setting, and shifting points of view. It will employ closure strategies that present an image of the future for both Angie and Chat, implying continuation of the story and/or characters, and how they might go down a multiplicity of different roads. In its desire to remain ambiguous, the conflicts surrounding Angie's and Chat's relationship will never fully be solved, just presented accurately through their perception; an antithesis will be created through their ongoing thoughts of present conflict and juxtaposition of life and death, separation and reunion, the harmony of the natural world and the disharmony of their internal ones.

Although Wright's fictional settings were often centered in the United States, the specific U.S. location was often integral to the resolution of the story. The protagonists are exposed to similar situations, but depending upon the northern American or southern American environments, they may encounter vastly different outcomes. Neither environment proves itself to be beneficial to Wright's protagonists. The racism in both northern and southern environments is the defining factor in the development of the protagonists. There are differences between the two environments: while the racism is obvious in the southern environment, the northern environment is outwardly more accepting. Even so, the northern environment can also isolate the protagonist. In nearly every piece of Wright's fiction, his protagonists meet unfortunate endings.

Post-treatment analysis was done by using a series of bioassays, including LDH, MTS, AcrO-EthBr, Annexin-FITC and TUNEL assays for growth inhibition and apoptosis detection; and Caspase-3 and NQO1 for molecular pathways of apoptosis. Results. Pomegranate and genistein showed significant dose- and time-dependent cytotoxic and growth inhibition effects as well as apoptosis induction in MCF-7 cancer cells, with significantly higher ( P < 0.01) effects in the combination treatments than in the single treatments. Both drugs induced apoptosis through a caspase-mediated mechanism and independent of NQO1. Discussion and conclusions. Pomegranate and genistein inhibit the growth of MCF-7 breast cancer cells through induction of apoptosis with combination treatment being more efficacious than single treatments.

While extensive research regarding deleterious effects of nutrient impacts has been conducted in the phosphorus-deficient Everglades, there is a lack of research in Big Cypress Swamp. This 12-month field study assessed the responsiveness of Taxodium distichum, Fraxinus caroliniana, and herbaceous vegetation to increased nutrient levels in Big Cypress Swamp. Six nutrient treatments (Control, N, P, K, 2K, and PxK) were applied to the soil surrounding these trees. F. caroliniana had higher photosynthetic rates with 2K treatments and higher growth rates with PxK treatments. T. distichum had higher Leaf Area Index in the P and PxK treatment but did not exhibit other responses to treatment. Herbaceous vegetation showed little response to treatments. This study concluded that potassium may be co-limiting in this ecosystem.

Show moreIncreasing aggressions through cyber terrorism pose a constant threat to information security in our day to day life. Implementing effective intrusion detection systems (IDSs) is an essential task due to the great dependence on networked computers for the operational control of various infrastructures. Building effective IDSs, unfortunately, has remained an elusive goal owing to the great technical challenges involved, and applied data mining techniques are increasingly being utilized in attempts to overcome the difficulties. This thesis presents a comparative study of the traditional "direct" approaches with the recently explored "indirect" approaches of classification which use class binarization and combiner techniques for intrusion detection. We evaluate and compare the performance of IDSs based on various data mining algorithms, in the context of a well known network intrusion evaluation data set. It is empirically shown that data mining algorithms when applied using the indirect classification approach yield better intrusion detection models.

Show moreBoth incredibly personal and inherently social, cosmetic surgery procedures intended to reconfigure the body toward a more culturally acceptable physicality and the increase in television representations of the phenomenon provoke a complex debate regarding the social, psychological, medical and ethical implications of such practices. This thesis raises the question: Do television texts of cosmetic surgery and their potential consumers reproduce or challenge the hegemony of cosmetic surgery as a cultural practice? Using qualitative, social scientific methodology to analyze current examples of such television texts and study viewer negotiation of these texts, the study concludes that television texts are most likely to present cosmetic surgery in ways that perpetuate hegemonic notions of beauty, and that while viewers may negotiate readings that suit their preconceived notions of cosmetic surgery, they are unlikely to condemn such messages for fear of compromising an individual's power to choose cosmetic surgery for "acceptable reasons" such as improved self-esteem or social acceptance.

Show moreThe masculine gender identity in western United States culture is constructed in opposition to femininity, and is maintained through the culture modes of discipline and surveillance. However, instances of male femininity challenge these rigid constructs of gender, and suggest that gender is in fact a performance reflecting cultural norms as opposed to an internal core of identity. Instances of male femininity can be located in heterosexual male cross-dressing activities, ranging from the recent phenomena of "metrosexuality" to heterosexual men completely dressing as women. While frequently presenting some problematic conceptions of gender, these behaviors also provide instances of subversive breaks in gendered performance, and illustrate the possibility for a non-oppositional heterosexuality. Additionally, the films Billy Elliot and Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake provide popular culture examples illustrating the ways in which men struggle with masculinity, and the complexities of addressing moments of femininity in individual male subjectivity and identity.

Jobs, which previously had to be done in the United States, can now be done offshore and thus American companies can take advantage of the wage differentials between countries. To see the potential effects that such a structural change may have on economic growth, we first examine the 19th century convergence between Europe and the New World countries. Thereafter we introduce a model of economic growth that will take into account a particular aspect of present day offshoring. Many of the workers being brought into the United States labor market are highly skilled. After this, we introduce Skill-Biased Technological Change and look at how it may be affected by offshoring.

As Humbert and Lolita experience alienation and uprooted-ness, they embark upon a two-year journey which orbits around reality, as their travels follow what David Seamon calls, Journey-Dwelling Spiral, however, without ever attaining a state of dwelling. As they attempt to overcome their disorientation, Lolita distances herself from Humbert, and Humbert projects his nympholepsy onto another, Quilty. Because Lolita succeeds in her goal, Humbert's life splinters and his only chance at reunification is by writing his memoir, Lolita, Confessions of a White Male.

Show moreAvailable air quality data has been analyzed using the Industrial Source Complex Dispersion Model (ISC3). The FORTRAN program Mobile 5a was utilized to obtain the emission factors. Concerning the toxic volatile organic compounds, the simulations indicate that benzene exceeded the previous permissible air quality standard. Toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene values remained within allowable concentration levels. Long-term annual benzene emissions from stationary sources exceeded the former reference concentration of 0.12 mug/m 3 about five times per year, whereas the data for 8 and 24 hours were relatively low. Simulation results for the mobile sources demonstrated that the emission factor is a highly sensitive parameter. Possible realistic scenarios at Port Everglades were obtained through varying benzene concentrations. The results are plotted as concentration contours, in order to visualize areas of suspected health risk associated to air pollution. Compared to the Reference Concentration for Chronic Inhalation Exposure, EPA, the modeled results appear significantly less.

Show moreHijab, the Islamic dress code, in Muslim communities is a sensitive and controversial issue. It embodies religious doctrine and patriarchal policies. However, in Iran this concept entails a more exclusive significance due to the strict nature of the Shiite faith, which is prevalent in Iran, along with a volatile political system and harsh practices of patriarchy and male domination that are legitimized by Iranian culture and traditions. The legacy of veiling in Iran is not a product of Islam and Islamic laws. Such a practice had existed in Iran centuries before the appearance of Islam in Mecca. The veil predates Islam, and during the ancient dynasties in Persia the veil and harem were common practices. The veil has often been a source of male domination and patriarchy in Iran. During the twentieth century, the coercive unveiling and re-veiling have played important roles in the repression, exclusion and seclusion of women, which have assisted the state to continue its domination over women and achieve political gains and progress.

Show moreThis longitudinal study examined the likely direction of influence between perceived parenting and attachment style in middle childhood. In each of two successive years, measures of perceived parenting behaviors and of attachment style were administered to 164 children (mean age 10.2 in Year 1). Avoidant (but not preoccupied) attachment predicted change in perceived parenting over time, in that avoidant children perceived their mothers as increasingly overprotective, as less monitoring, as less affectionate, and as providing less reliable support over time. There was little evidence that perceived parenting led to change in attachment style over time, although low perceived maternal support in Year 1 predicted increases in preoccupied attachment. Results provide new insights into the direction of effects between attachment and perceived parenting during middle childhood.

This thesis reviews critical parameters for Current Minors characterization. Six MOS Current Mirror configurations are studied, and their performance characteristics are compared. The proper selection and use of MOSFET models are presented. It is shown that CAD-based design and analysis is indispensable if realistic MOS models such as BSIM3 are used. The CAD based analysis and design employs simulation parameter tuning, optimization and swept parameters. The presented CAD techniques allow a designer to make important tradeoffs for different configurations. One of the main thesis observations is that it is not always necessary to use more involved Current Mirror configurations; a Simple Current Mirror Configuration is often sufficient. The thesis also studies the adverse effects on the design caused by process variations.

Show moreBirkhoff raised the question of how to determine "relative invariants of subgroups" of a given group. Let us consider pairs (A, B ) where B is a finite pn-bounded Abelian group and A is a subgroup of B. Maps between pairs (A, B) --> (A', B') are morphisms f : B --> B' such that f (A) --> A'. Classification of such pairs, up to isomorphism, is Birkhoff's famous problem. By the Krull-Remak-Schmidt theorem, an arbitrary pair (A, B) is a direct sum of indecomposable pairs, and the multiplicities of the indecomposables are determined uniquely. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the decomposition of such pairs, (A, B), explicitly for n = 2 and n = 3. We describe explicitly how an indecomposable pair can possibly embed into a given pair (A, B). This construction gives rise to formulas for the multiplicity of an indecomposable in the direct sum decomposition of the pair (A, B). These decomposition numbers form a full set of relative invariant, as requested by Birkhoff.

PNA CISH and plate counts correlated strongly (r = 0.94 to r = 0.86). Temperature, salinity, nutrient availability and predation significantly influenced the survival of indicators. Rainfall and wave energy affected the re-suspension of bacteria from sand onto overlying water. Overall PNA CISH provides a reliable rapid method for beach monitoring. The implications of beach topography and sampling time on the numbers of Clostridium perfringens and other potential indicators are discussed. Data suggest a revision of policy for tropical sandy beaches.
