The city that Borges considered his home was the center of various political and cultural changes in Argentina during those years, and the more that Argentina changed, the deeper Borges’s disillusionment became. Examining these changes in the depiction of themes such as city, community, and history, we can better understand the process of disillusionment by which Borges begins with a utopic view of Buenos Aires that becomes dystopic before it is abandoned in order to imagine a new utopia.

Show moreThis study examines the representation of women in Emile Zola’s famous series Les Rougon-Macquart. Critics have described Zola’s novels and their presentation of women as misogynist, yet this judgment obscures many of the textual details establishing the female protagonists’ relationships to industrial capitalism and the rapidly changing social landscape in late nineteenth century France. This study reexamines the narrative synthesis between Zola’s naturalist “objective” narrator and his female protagonists. It also highlights one particular pairing that of Adelaide Fouque and her opportunist daughter-in-law, Felicité Puch: Whereas Adelaide, the biological matriarch of the family who figures in each of the twenty novels, does not have an active voice, Felicité as maternal protectrice of the family speaks frankly, even aggressively. Zola uses this pairing to link one generation to the next, a key structural element of his naturalist project. Ultimately, Zola’s representation of women is more complex than might otherwise be understood.

The importance of this work hinges on the recognition of Mulder as a female poet whose work has been marginalized from the literary canon, like that of many other women of her era. This thesis focuses on Mulde''s third poetry collection, Sinfonâia en rojo, which was published in 1929 and stands out for its symbolic richness and its romantic and modernist features. Part of this research deals with the symbolism of the color red and the meanings that red acquires within the context of the poems. The main leitmotivs of Sinfonâia en rojo are the images of fire and blood, which are used to make reference to both the emotional and the physical world of the poetic voice. The research also focuses on the connections between Mulder's work and that of her contemporaries, and it suggests that she was in contact with the literary world of her era.

"Spanish Winter" is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, a troubled US American, divorced woman who travels by herself to Spain in the winter....

This project includes a translation of Jennifer Egan's short story "Spanish Winter" from her collection Emerald City and Other Stories (1996). It also presents the theoretical frame, the critical analysis, and the pitfalls of the translation. "Spanish Winter" is narrated in the first person by the protagonist, a troubled US American, divorced woman who travels by herself to Spain in the winter. The importance of this text lies in the quest for identity of a female character whose journey symbolizes a search for herself. This postmodern tale, which depicts cultural exchanges between Spaniards and a US American woman and presents a contemporary theme told by a female narrator traveling abroad, is extremely relevant in today's globalized world. De Luca's work often defies traditional attempts at translation due to its philosophical and polysemantic nature ; more than mere essays or accounts of, for instance, his involvement with humanitarian missions in Bosnia, his work consists of reflections on life and language itself. De Luca, himself a prolific translator from Ancient Hebrew, Russian and Yiddish, oftentimes emphasizes the origins of specific words, making carefully studied choices in his own writing. Therefore, in addition to the six carefully produced translations with special attention paid to De Luca's word choices and an awareness of the etymological weight each one carries, this thesis shall also provide a theoretical framework emphasizing a sense-based translation which will allow the freedom necessary to explore De Luca's polysemy as well as commentary highlighting the challenges encountered in translating his work.

Show moreThis thesis analyzes the interaction of three primordial circular concepts in the formation of the literary identity of Jorge Luis Borges: the English language, intertextuality, and translation. The allegory of concentric circles facilitates the explanation of the complexity of these processes that intertwine and interact expanding to the infinite. This is not only a metaphor but also a metaphysical dilemma which Borges has utilized to explain time not as an absolute progression where a before and after are feasible but rather as a cyclical idea in which the return and the repetition are eternal. The three key concepts will be analyzed, using as an example, a short story by one of the English writers who Borges has cited and translated, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, "The Three Horsemen of Apocalypse." Borges translated Chestertons tale prior to writing "The Garden of Forking Paths," and this thesis demonstrates how we may discern Chesterton's influence on the Argentine's fiction, particularly within the genre of the detective story.

Show moreThis thesis analyzes the complexities of Argentinean politics during Juan Domingo Perâon's last presidency, (1973-1974), as presented in Osvaldo Soriano's novel No habrâa mâas penas ni olvido. Soriano's work, set in the fictitious town of Colonia Vela, in the state of Buenos Aires, illustrates in a small scale the different social and political components that make up the national body. Historical and fictitious elements dramatize the conflict among the left and right wings of the Peronist Party. These two factions divide the villagers, who hold diverse images of Perâon and what the party entails, while putting their political beliefs and physical well-being at stake. Quickly the two splinter parties trigger an open arm conflict while fighting under the same slogan: "Perâon o muerte". Supported by diverse theoretical perspectives, this thesis reveals that Soriano's novel sheds light into one of the most confusing periods of Argentinean history while rescuing the sacrifices of the people.

Castellanos chooses the years of the Cardenas presidency (1934-1940) for her novel, a work that deals with the legacy of the Mexican Revolution. Set in Chiapas, Mexico, autobiographical and fictitious elements and characters dramatize a conflict over indigenous rights to land and education on a criollo family's enormous estate. Supported by intellectual criticism from a number of fields, this thesis connects episodes from Castellanos's novel with the core premises of Mariâategui's essay.

Meanwhile, Dominican millionaire Hugo Graubel manages his life publicly as a heterosexual husband and privately as a gay man and strongly attempts to capture enigmatic Sirena Selena. Whereas the Dominican, pre-adolescent, poor, and mulatto Leocadio discovers the veiled world of tourism that offers alternate possibilities of economic survival. The previous generations' transgression of society's binary definitions created alternate spaces that continue to pave the way for future generations that will refuse and resist conforming to static patriarchal and heterosexual mainstream classifications.

The Lais of Marie de France, a late twelfth-century text, often focus explicitly on motherhood (both biological and symbolic) and therefore allow a deeper examination of the new cultural representations of women in the dual role of spouse and mother. The Lais further highlight the symbolic role of the child as guarantor both of a woman's social value and of the validity of the love relationship based on the tenets of fin'amors instead of formal marriage.

Show moreThe translation of Geny Vilas-Novas' novel Adeus, Rio Doce emphasizes the importance of promoting a literary exchange between Brazil and the Spanish-speaking world. This study analyses contemporary Brazilian literature and situates the author in the post-modern literary movement, stressing two post-colonial fundamental themes: emigration and feminine literature. Millions of undocumented emigrants from Latin America live nowadays in the United States displaced in the American society and leave suffering family members abandoned in their native countries. One of the roles of Latin- American women writers like Vilas-Novas is to reveal and denounce the subaltern conditions of this emigration movement in the globalization process, under the unusual perspective of those left behind. The linguistic and semantic challenges and difficulties faced during translation are a metaphor for the crossing of linguistic, cultural, social, and historical borders by Latin-Americans in search of better life opportunities.

The literary character of the "student" does not depart only from its reality. Its characteristics are based on the student stories from the oral medieval tradition, a residual cultural elements, as described by Maxime Chevalier, as well as the emerging picaresque narratives.

This thesis explores the relation between spatial structure and identity in two Latin American works: "Walking Around" (1933) by Pablo Neruda and Aura (1962) by Carlos Fuentes. Both authors introduce architecture as an intrinsic element in the construction of their narrative; Neruda's poetic voice wanders around a seemingly living city, while Fuentes's characters abandon the city to become part of a house. The architectural imagery of both texts leads the reader to explore the construction of its literary subjects and to see the physical space as their "phantom limbs." This reading will elucidate the importance of architecture within Latin American literature as well as reveal the maneuvering of the structural representations in the construction of the Latin America identity.

As one of the founders of the realist novel, Balzac is praised for having invented returning characters and interwoven chronologies that serve to challenge the decadent social mores of his time, but critical discussions of Balzacs's work continue to neglect his use of satire in social criticism. Different modes of satire occure in his LePere Goriot (1835), Le Bat de Sceaux (1829), Gobseck (1830), La Maison Nucingen (1837), Le Depute dArcis (1847), and La Femme abandonnee (1822), which together attest that Balzac achieves his ambition to become both the Rabelais and the Moliere of his era.

Show moreThe chroniclers who accompanied Lope de Aguirre on his expedition to find "EI Dorado," accuse him of being a "crazy" tyrant, responsible for the rebellion to emancipate the conquerors from the Spanish crown. Aguirre was made a scapegoat, in Girard ian terms, not only for that reason but due to his critique of what Angel Rama defined as the "Lettered City," a rebuke voiced in the infamous letter he wrote to the Spanish king denouncing imperial institutions in the Americas. 20th century, Spanish writer Ramon J. Sender's novel, La aventura equinoccial de Lope de Aguirre (1964), reverses the historical discourse in order to use Aguirre's attack on the "Lettered City," to criticize the intellectuals who supported Franco's regime in Spain, as well as the Catholic Church. This thesis's critical reading of the source chronicles on which Sender based his novel leads to a more profound understanding of both the early modem imperial and the modem fascist violence unleashed, not only by supposed "tyrants-scapegoats" the likes of Aguirre, but by power itself: that of monarchies and dictators.

Show moreThis thesis examines the arduous and controversial attempt of literary critics to classify appropriately the novel Los rfos profundos (Deep Rivers) by the Peruvian novelist and ethnographer, Jose Marfa Arguedas and reviews the main theories that were applied to decipher its meaning. But more than a task of classifying, the thesis itself is a work of interpretation, which required broadening the research boundaries previously employed. Confronting the dominance of Western discourse that has shaped how we understand Andean literature, I identify the elements of indigenous Andean discourse that are deeply embedded in the novel. This perspective may decisively influence the way we read Latin American Literature and hopes to more rigorously draw attention to the presence of ancestral indigenous civilization in the cultural identity of Latin America.

Liberals and Conservatives faced off in a battle to win control over the state, more specifically, to achieve hegemony. Peasants and urban dwellers were in the middle of such confrontation. And eventually, were co-opted by the rhetoric of each fraction, thereby becoming murderers, victims, or both. Colombian writer Gustavo Alvarez Gardeazabal recreated this time in two of his novels, Condores no entierran todos los dias y El ultimo gamonal. His historical narrative accounts the events and succeeds in recreating the languages and practices of La Violencia. This study will address these themes and explain how Gardeazabal portrays the role of the conservative State and its connections with criminal practices.

While most academic attention has concentrated on weaving techniques and esthetics, this thesis explores the semiotics of the designs, not only in an ethnographic context, but as an expression of ideology, cosmogony, and the indigenous groups' cultural history. In addition to reading colonial Andean sources on the pre-Inca and Inca weaving traditions, I analyze the symbolic elements of a sample of acsus, women's traditional skirts. I link the symbols still used today to depictions of pre-Inca mythology and the cultural inclusions from Hispanic culture that have created a syncretism from processes of transculturation.

Show moreReligious ideology played a powerful role in the shaping of the Spanish Empire as seen in the writings of Christopher Columbus, the first widely documented European explorer to reach the Americas. Columbus was driven by intense feelings of divine providence and saw his project in biblical and prophetic terms. In his diaries and letters, as well as his Book of Prophecies, Columbus' religious fervor shows a messianic zeal and his rhetoric mimics that of the newly emerging Spanish Empire who, in tum, mimicked the messianic and imperialist rhetoric of the Catholic Church. This zeal was not particular to Columbus' personality but rather it reflects the common beliefs of his times. The cosmology of Columbus was a composite ofvarious Medieval and early Renaissance philosophers whose erroneous conceptions of geography and apocalyptic visions of the future were based on astrological patterns and various prophecies in the Bible rather than empirical facts.
