The collection largely focuses on the process of making and preserving memories and how the lack of control over one’s memory can lead to paranoia and displacement in their life. Particular value is attached to certain memories and the value and emotion attached can at times overwrite the actual content of the memory. The stories center around the Riviera family and particularly Ana Riviera’s life as she considers the many aspects of her family history she continues to inherit and the comfort and paranoia she associates with such inheritance.

Dick's references to empathy throughout his novels, short stories, and essays, no analysis has attempted to examine the role of empathy in his writings. In contrast to the element of ratiocination (or logical extrapolation) widely considered to be the hallmark of science fiction, Dick's fictions are held together by the value they primarily place not on reason, but on an empathic understanding of our actions and their effects upon the lives of other entities. Using two early short stories ("Beyond Lies the Wub" and "Roog"), two non-Earth ecologies (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Dr. Bloodmoney). I will demonstrate that Dick's works are united by an ethical imperative to understand the thoughts and emotions of others, human and nonhuman alike.

Each symptom of my disease and side effect from my medications prompted a reevaluation of my identity as I felt a change both in myself and in the way others perceived me. In order to maintain a sense of control, I tried several techniques to pass and cover my disabled status, including the use of prosthetic hair pieces. Ultimately, the use of prosthetics made accepting my situation more difficult as it encouraged holding onto a former identity rather than creating a new one. It was not until I stopped using prosthetics as a form of denial and instead adopted them as part of a new identity that I was finally able to achieve the confidence necessary to fight for my life.

Show moreThe nature of conflict occupied my mind as I pieced together the 2016 election. Much of my dazed shock was the weight of hearing all at once a group of people who had felt ignored. I felt compelled to write about the nature of conflict — how opposing sides see one another with similar levels of skepticism and derision that comes from fear that something essential will be lost. I wanted to write about this without directly discussing politics. Instead, I used nature. I find warmth and stillness when I’m unanswerable to any other person as the steady and constant presence of trees and sky contrast my frantic mind until it slows down. This collection uses nature as a vehicle for conflict – a piece of land at war with itself, and the fragility of the family who tries to make their home there.

Show moreThe main desire behind this project was to construct a story that could be enjoyed by anyone of any age (for the most part). The author has been writing for over ten years at this point, and has always had an affinity for Young Adult literature. It was YA literature that made the author interested in becoming a writer in the first place. YA has the ability to help those who are too young to be considered “real adults” feel like there is someone out there that understands them and who takes them and their feelings into serious consideration. While, like any genre of literature out there, there are some more unsavory and less serious pieces of literature in this category, to always look down on it and say that it has no value or no place among other literature is ill mannered. The story here depicts what life is like as a teenager, which many know and have experienced, but it shows how young people deal with all sorts of feelings and scenarios, ranging from small fights that won’t matter the next day with friends you may not remember in ten years, to life changing and world shattering events that you won’t ever forget, no matter how hard you may try. The author of this piece wanted to portray a story where young people could feel heard and could relate, and where older generations could begin to understand that just because someone is young, doesn’t mean that what they feel isn’t real. The desire to reach the hearts of many is what lives in these pages and will continue to do so until that desire is met. This project came about after almost two years, and while it is far from complete, it will be worked on until it can sit on its own and feel worthy of peoples eyes and fears.

Some stories use magical and fairy tale-like elements, which work as allusions in the stories and echo the events happening in characters' lives. Another theme present in the collection is that of family and how familial relationships affect identity and self-discovery. In one story, a wildfire allows the stories of different generations to be told, while a widow builds a family out of the aftermath of her husband's death in a different story.

Illegitimacy was used in Victorian literature as a literary device to drive plot but evolved into a touchstone for Western discourse to explore the bounds of what is considered respectable society. Over time, as illegitimacy has become more mainstream, I contend illegitimate identities have been utilized to serve as a mirror for Western hegemony. In the first chapter, I explore the origins of illegitimacy being used as a literary device in novels by Victorian authors Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. In the second chapter, I examine the role illegitimacy plays in the origin stories of canonical comic book superheroes Batman and Superman. Lastly, in the third chapter, I scrutinize the role illegitimacy plays in defining the human condition within science fiction as human culture continues to advance technologically towards a post human world.

Yi- Fu Tuan's analysis of the concepts space and place serves as the foundational theoretical framework by which human spatiality may be interpreted. Combining Tuan's observations and architectural analysis with Edouard Glissant's concepts of atavistic and composite societal models allows for a much broader consideration of various political ideologies present in the South. Following this, it becomes necessary to apply a postcolonial lens to areas of Faulkner's literature to examine how these societal models are upheld and the effects they have on characters in both Reconstruction and post- Reconstruction eras. Within Absalom, Absalom! and The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner showcases an aspect of southern history that allowed this societal model to flourish, how this model affected those trapped within it, and its ultimate failure for future generations.

She wondered whether people would assume she was illegal because of her accent and appearance. Our discussions prompted me to think about of my place in the story, and about my lack of connection with the Hispanic culture. I set out to interview migrants living in South Florida, and to document my and my mother's experience with immigration and assimilation.

The focus of this thesis is the transmission of the trauma of genocide and large-scale historical traumas, specifically that seen in the Holocaust and the missionization of the California Indians in the 18th century. Through the analysis of the autobiographical narratives composed by three generations of Holocaust survivors, as well as one composed by a later generation descendant of the California Mission Indians, I argue that silence is not only a manifestation of trauma but also a tool of its transmission. I further argue that when this silence is broken and the stories are told we begin to see a shift in the traumatic memory away from re-traumatizing the later generations and toward preserving an accurate historical memory without the significant psychological cost to the later generations.

Limiting our viewpoint to the modern scientific reductionist view of the universe not only makes little sense if we consider Michael Polanyi's theories of emergence and 'personal knowledge', but it robs medieval scholars for the conceptual credit they are due for theories they could not satisfactorily explain by the future's standards, and stifles the sorts of fantastic possibilities that are opened by the great science-fiction authors. Medieval authors' expositions of protoscientific thought laid the ground work for our own modern disciplines, and by reexamining how this happened we can develop a new appreciation for the power of the imagination.

The union of these three activities comprises the providential relationship of Illuvatar in Tolkien's imaginary world. The following thesis endeavors to carry the argument for providence into The Silmarillion with a declarative and analytical detail that distinguishes Illuvatar's providence from other temporal manifestations. Finally, the analysis reveals not only the author's authentic orthodox perspective, but Illuvatar's role in the imaginative world emerges as a reflection of Tolkien's authorial role in the real world.

Show moreSpace (topos) as one of the main categories in modem literary criticism helps to discover and study unique aspects of the narrative such as functioning of archetypes, reflection of historical reality in the text, and different types of artistic consciousness (mythological and "realistic"). This work is a first study of time and space in Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings with the help of the chronotope concept proposed by Mikhail Bakhtin. A critic and author of an original literary concept and one of the most prominent representatives of the school of Russian formalism, Mikhail Bakhtin was also a contemporary of J. R. R. Tolkien who can be ranked among the most significant experimenters in the field of modem literature. Using Bakhtin's classification of spatio-temporal relations in the novel, I was able to identify a type of chronotope in Tolkien's major narrative as one close to mythological and epical chronotopes. In terms of this postulate, I explored methods Tolkien used to create unique time and space of fantasy to make this experimental literary genre widely popular since the middle of the twentieth century onward.
