Show moreWhile the text of Tamburlaine I and II contains the classic pattern of act and scene divisions, the organic structure of the play is governed by the twelve signs and houses of the zodiac. The play's metaphorical patterns are consciously formulated to correspond to the zodiacal year, and consequently represent a circular pattern. The play's well-known rising and falling movement (Parts I and II) is analogous to both solar day and solar year. As hero, Tamburlaine's role is that of Sol, the central planet in the Ptolemaic system, ascending with the vernal equinox in Part I and descending with the autumnal equinox in Part II. The imagery traverses, in sequential fashion, the signs and houses, with one radical adjustment: Pisces is removed from the end of the cycle and placed at the beginning of Act I, an alteration which probably has concealed the metaphorical pattern heretofore.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to investigate the process used by Haitians and Haitian Americans who must make healthcare decisions for a terminally ill family member. There is a large population of Haitians and Haitian Americans in South Florida and there has been no research regarding their decision-making process about end-of-life healthcare. The study design was descriptive, applying constructivist grounded theory methodology. Data were collected using semi-structured, face-to-face qualitative interviews. Data analysis and collection occurred simultaneously. Participants (n=12) were purposefully recruited, with 11 from a single, faith-based community. The findings resulted in six concepts: (1) imminent or actual death, (2) disrupted unity, (3) managing disrupted unity, (4) consequences, (5) restoring unity, and (6) creating memories you can live with. These six concepts, elaborated by an additional 17 dimensions, were incorporated into a process model relating to the cultural value of communal unity to the end-of-life decision-making process. The implications of this study include a need to improve the congruence between the nursing care provided at this vulnerable time and the cultural values of this population. Successful access to this population through the structure of the faith-based community points the way to increasing access to appropriate end-of-life healthcare. Practice implications informed by caring science include the importance of nurses’ coming to know the family and listening to the unique care needs.

Recall of the objects was tested immediately and again after one week. In general, immediate recall was greater in the simple-scene condition than in all others for all grades tested. Recall in the scrambled condition was also greater than in the other two conditions for second and fifth graders, but not for the kindergarten children. The sheet divided into squares and the blank sheet conditions did not differ from each other at any time. The results for delayed recall were similar in that the condition with the simple scene yielded performance superior to all others. However, the scrambled condition no longer differed from the other two conditions. The results suggest the importance of assessing children's memory for information in conditions or backgrounds which approximate those found in the real world, and of the use of schematic or episodic organization by young children.

The ability to learn what objects are and how to respond to them appropriately is essential for daily living. The literature has presented contrasting evidence about the role of perpetual features such as artifact appearance versus causal or inductive reasoning in chldren's category distinctions (e.g., function). The present project used a child-initiated inquiry paradigm to investigate how children conceptualize artifacts, specifically how they prioritize different types of information that typify not only novel but also familiar objects. Results underscore a hybrid model in which perceptual features and deeper properties act synergistically to inform children's artifact conceptualization. Function, however, appears to be the driving force of this relationship.

Show moreThe purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand, describe, and make meaning of the experiences of early childhood educators of young foster care students. The researcher examined the experiences of teachers regarding the attachment behaviors of their foster care students. This study also sought to explore how early childhood teachers implement their curriculum and how they design their classroom environment to meet the needs of young foster care children. Data collection and analysis included 20 questionnaires and 20 face-to-face semistructured interviews. Data analysis consisted of a three step process. The first step began by reading interviews through a holistic approach. During this step, the researcher read the entire transcript as a whole before digging deeper. The second step in coding was a selective reading. In this step, the researcher read through each transcript by finding key words and/or phrases. The third step in the coding process was a detailed reading. The researcher read the text word-by-word. This step aided the researcher in finding those words that captured the phenomenon of the teachers. The researcher found three major overarching themes: social and emotional behaviors, triad relationship, and classroom accommodations. This study revealed three main themes: attachment-related behaviors of social and emotional development, teacher relationship strategies with student and caregiver, and classroom curricular and environmental adjustments. Within all three of these themes was an underlying theme of a teacher-as-mother perceived attachment from the teachers. The teacher-as-mother perceived attachment was embedded in the experiences of the teachers. It is recommended that this main theme be explored in future research. The experiences of the teachers were completely based on their experiences in this study. The way they intervened on behalf of their foster care students did not appear to relate to any professional development or training; it was entirely based on their experiences. It is recommended that the arena of early childhood would benefit immensely with a course, training, or professional development in learning about the foster care system and dealing with young children in foster care.

Show moreThis dissertation proposes YACAD (Yet Another Congestion Avoidance Design for ATM-based Networks), a congestion prevention model that includes admission control, traffic shaping, and link-by-link flow control for ATM-based networks. Network traffic in this model is composed of real-time traffic and data traffic. As real-time traffic is delay-sensitive and connection-oriented, its call acceptance is based upon the effective bandwidth at all nodes. Effective bandwidth is defined as a vector of bandwidth and maximum node delay. As data traffic can be either connection-oriented or connectionless, it is subject to link-by-link flow control based on a criterion known as effective buffer which is defined as a scalar of buffer size. Data traffic is not delay-sensitive but is loss-sensitive. Traffic shaping is imposed on real-time traffic to ensure a smooth inflow of real-time cells. YACAD also allocates a large buffer (fat bucket) to data traffic to accommodate sudden long bursts of data cells. Absence of data cell loss is a major feature of YACAD. Two simulation studies on the performance of the model are conducted. Analyses of the simulation results show that the proposed congestion avoidance model can achieve congestion-free networking and bounded network delays for real-time traffic at high levels of channel utilization. The maximum buffer requirements for loss-free cell delivery for data traffic, and the cell loss probabilities for real-time traffic are also obtained. In addition, results of performance comparisons to other similar models have shown that YACAD outperforms several other leaky-bucket based congestion control methods in terms of cell loss probability for real-time traffic. The simulation source program has also been verified using existing queueing theories, and the Paired-t Confidence Interval method with satisfactory results at 99% confidence level.

File sharing is the dominant P2P application on the Internet, allowing users to easily contribute, search and obtain content. The objective of this thesis was to design XYZ, a partially centralized, scalable and self-organizing lookup service for wide area P2P systems. The XYZ system is based on distributed hash table (DHT). A unique ID and a color assigned to each node and each file. The author uses clustering method to create the system backbone by connecting the cluster heads together and uses color clustering method to create color overlays. Any lookup for a file with a color will only be forwarded in the color overlay with the same color so that the searching space is minimized. Simulations and analysis are also provided in this thesis.

Show moreXYZ Video Compression denotes a video compression algorithm that operates in three dimensions, without the overhead of motion estimation. The smaller overhead of this algorithm as compared to MPEG and other "standards-based" compression algorithms using motion estimation suggests the suitability of this algorithm to real-time applications. The demonstrated results of compression of standard motion video benchmarks suggest that XYZ Video Compression is not only a faster algorithm, but develops superior compression ratios as well. The algorithm is based upon the three-dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). Pixels are organized as 8 x 8 x 8 cubes by taking 8 x 8 squares out of 8 consecutive frames. A fast three-dimensional transform is applied to each cube, generating 512 DCT coefficients. The energy-packing property of the DCT concentrates the energy in the cube into few coefficients. The DCT coefficients are quantized to maximize the energy concentration at the expense of introduction of a user-determined level of error. A method of adaptive quantization that generates optimal quantizers based upon statistics gathered for the 8 consecutive frames is described. The sensitivity of the human eye to various DCT coefficients is used to modify the quantizers to create a "visually equivalent" cube with still greater energy concentration. Experiments are described that justify choice of Human Visual System factors to be folded into the quantization step. The quantized coefficients are then encoded into a data stream using a method of entropy coding based upon the statistics of the quantized coefficients. The bitstream generated by entropy coding represents the compressed data of the 8 motion video frames, and typically will be compressed at 50:1 at 5% error. The decoding process is the reverse of the encoding process: the bitstream is decoded to generate blocks of quantized DCT coefficients, the DCT coefficients are dequantized, and the Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform is performed on the cube to recover pixel data suitable for display. The elegance of this technique lies in its simplicity, which lends itself to inexpensive implementation of both encoder and decoder. Finally, real-time implementation of the XYZ Compressor/Decompressor is discussed. Experiments are run to determine the effectiveness of the implementation.

These applications might often communicate with applications on a different platform, that structures data in a different format. The manner in which data is transferred between such applications can become complex, because there will be many platform dependent applications that need to process the data transferred. Hence a mechanism for exchange of data in a simple, effective manner for such applications is a basic necessity. In this thesis, such a mechanism to deal with data exchange in a platform independent manner is discussed. The proposed model is XML-based, and data between the applications is exchanged in the form of XML documents. XML is text-based and can be processed by any application existing on any platform. The model has an interface that processes the XML documents transferred between the client applications and the underlying database systems. The model is implemented in a System administration application. The application is a Web application that transfers data in the XML format. This is processed by the interface and transferred to the database. Data from the database is retrieved and converted to XML documents by the interface and transferred to the client (Web) applications.

A series of samples of low temperature carbonate hydroxyapatites with varying carbonate content was synthesized. The carbonate solubility in the hydroxyapatite system was studied with x-ray diffraction. The detailed crystal structure parameters of the synthetic carbonate hydroxyapatites were studied as a function of temperature and carbonate content from the analysis of Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data. The phosphate tetrahedron is distorted by the carbonate substitution. The tetrahedral bond lengths P-O1 and P-O2 decrease by 2--3%. The atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) of the tetrahedral P, O1, O2, and O3 sites reveal a static disorder in the carbonate hydroxyapatite specimens. The results of the present comparison are consistent with the mechanism of carbonate substitution on the mirror plane of the phosphate tetrahedron.

The effect of silicon (Si) substitution on the structural properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp) is investigated with powder x-ray and neutron diffraction methods. For this purpose, a series of samples of pure hydroxyapatite and 0.4 wt % Si substituted hydroxyapatite were prepared following a precipitation method. Phase identification from x-ray powder diffraction measurements showed a single hydroxyapatite phase in all the samples. Powder neutron diffraction patterns from room temperature down to 15 K are analyzed using the Rietveld method. The refined lattice constants, interatomic distances and isotropic atomic displacement parameters as a function of temperature for the pure and substituted hydroxyapatite are compared.

It also examined how the teachers collaborated to advance their knowledge in the area of ELs in the classroom. Qualitative data were collected in the form of 15 participant interviews and 15 Learning Team Meeting (LTM) observations. The data from the interviews and observations were used to investigate how participants implemented the Common Core Anchor Standards (CCAS) 1-6 in their classrooms. The data also sought to examine how the participants’ collaboration in LTMs contributed to the selected 3rd-5th grade teachers’ PCK with respect to CCAS 1-6 and support for their English language learners (EL). The findings indicated that participants recognized various EL instructional strategies embedded in the subject matter of writing. Further, the data indicated that the dual language participants collaborated as an effective means for delivering various EL instructional strategies.

Show moreOnly recently have US scholars looked at the rest of the world to see how other countries deal with the writing classroom, mainly because many other countries did not have a writing program or academic writing classes. However, the formation of the European Union (EU), particularly in 1992, brought about specific political and educational integration between member countries. The formation of the EU has changed the composition of the classroom in most continental European countries. In the US, the effects of globalization in our classroom will change composition studies. Bringing in perspectives from countries that are dealing with globalization in a different manner will further the focus and research in the field. Government intervention, language barriers, student involvement, and multi-disciplinary influences continue to shape composition studies. By examining these issues in both national and international context, we can anticipate the results of a cross-national pedagogical exchange.

Conclusions: 1. Although they consider writing important to success in their disciplines, high school teachers in the four major content areas do not frequently assign writing as an instructional activity. 2. Assigned writing is brief and consists primarily of exposition and reporting given fer the purpose of extending and/or expanding in-class activities. 3. Writing instruction is done through in-class supervision of the writing process, but outlining, revision/rewriting, and correcting errors are seldom used as teaching techniques. 4. Teachers are concerned with content more than form in commenting on student writing and in evaluating that writing. 5. The teaching of writing is seen primarily as the responsibility of the English teacher by both teachers and students. 6. Note-taking is the most widespread non-assigned writing task in the high school content areas as reported by both teachers and students. 7. High school students want to learn to write and associate their need for writing instruction with specific forms and improved communication.

Show moreThis thesis is a comparative study of John Barth's Lost in the Funhouse and Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior, based on the imagery and theme of Borges's "forking paths." Both authors are indebted to Borges's work for providing the experimental narrative devices that made it possible for them to challenge their "ghosts." In Barth's case, he loses himself in the Funhouse, haunted by the "same old stories" (102); Kingston finds her voice in the Chinese stories and shocking images of the past. The thesis will work toward a presentation of the dramatic performances and brilliant images in Barth's Lost in the Funhouse and in Kingston's The Woman Warrior. Readers become players who surrender their conventional notions about narrative in Borges's "Garden of the Forking Paths." Fortunately, the writing of Barth and Kingston continues to keep storytelling a lively art where time and memory are the main characters.

Show morePotentially, the most important response to widespread criticism about the quality of writing and writing instruction is Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC). WAC can mean a total immersion in writing, horizontally in all departments and vertically at all grade levels. It can encompass current writing theory, but only if teachers understand such theory and can apply it. WAC theory must be incorporated into the entire process of professional preparation. WAC philosophy believes that (a) writing can be learned and should be taught, (b) writing is a way to clarify thought, (c) writing is a way to learn, and (d) writing is a complex, individualized process. This understanding is required to teach in a successful WAC program. The literature offers little evidence that schools of education feel a responsibility to emphasize writing and writing instruction at the preservice level. Therefore, a study was initiated to survey the eight Florida schools of education that are members of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for the purpose of determining practices and perceptions regarding WAC. This descriptive research called for two survey questionnaires, which invited responses from 8 administrators and 250 secondary education students and tested 11 hypotheses. These hypotheses related to required courses for writing and writing instruction, student understanding of WAC theory, student perception of WAC status, level of student confidence to write and use writing, student willingness to become writing teachers, and student perception of the importance of writing. The remainder of the study recommends a required preservice course in WAC for all future teachers and suggests some components that course should contain.
