Show moreA study of Molecular Dynamics using computational methods and modeling provides the understanding on the interaction of the atoms, properties, structure, and motion and model phenomenon. There are numerous commercial tools available for simulation, analysis and visualization. However any particular tool does not provide all the functionalities. The main objective of this work is the development of the visualization tool customized for our research needs to view the three dimensional orientation of the atom, process the simulation results offline, able to handle large volume of data, ability to display complete frame, atomic trails, and runtime response to the researchers' query with low processing time. This thesis forms the basis for the development of such an in-house tool for analysis and display of simulation results based on Open GL and MFC. Advantages, limitations, capabilities and future aspects are also discussed. The result is the system capable of processing large amount of simulation result data in 11 minutes and query response and display in less than 1 second.

Approximate solutions are found by using Bubnov-Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin methods. For the first time explicit expressions are obtained for the natural frequencies of double and triple-walled carbon nanotubes for different combinations of boundary conditions. Comparison of the results with recent studies shows that the above methods constitute quick and effective alternative techniques to exact solution for studying the vibration properties of carbon nanotubes. The natural frequencies of the clamped-clamped double-walled carbon nanotubes are obtained; exact solution is provided and compared with the solution reported in the literature. In contrast to earlier investigation, an analytical criterion is derived to establish the behavior of the roots of the characteristic equation. Approximate Bubnov-Galerkin solution is also obtained to compare natural frequencies at the lower end of the spectrum. Simplified version of the Bresse-Timoshenko theory that incorporates the shear deformation and the rotary inertia is proposed for free vibration study of double-walled carbon nanotubes. It is demonstrated that the suggested set yields extremely accurate results for the lower spectrum of double-walled carbon nanotube. The natural frequencies of double-walled carbon nanotubes based on simplified versions of Donnell shell theory are also obtained. The buckling behavior of the double-walled carbon nanotubes under various boundary conditions is studied. First, the case of the simply supported double-walled carbon nanotubes at both ends is considered which is amenable to exact solution., Then, approximate methods of Bubnov-Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin are utilized to check the efficacy of these approximations for the simply supported double-walled carbon nanotubes. Once the extreme accuracy is demonstrated for simply supported conditions, the approximate techniques are applied to two other cases of the boundary conditions, namely to clamped-clamped and simply supported-clamped double-walled carbon nanotubes. For the first time in the literature approximate expression for the buckling loads are reported for these boundary conditions. The dynamic deflection of a single-walled carbon nanotube under impact loading is analyzed by following a recently study reported on the energy absorption capacity of carbon nanotubes under ballistic impact.

To perform the necessary analysis of the vibration signals, which may arrive rapidly in the form of data streams, we develop three new wavelet-based transforms (the Streaming Wavelet Transform, Short-Time Wavelet Packet Decomposition, and Streaming Wavelet Packet Decomposition) and propose modifications to the existing Short-TIme Wavelet Transform. ... The proposed algorithms also create and select frequency-band features which focus on the areas of the signal most important to MCM/PHM, producing only the information necessary for building models (or removing all unnecessary information) so models can run on less powerful hardware. Finally, we demonstrate models which can work in multiple environmental conditions. ... Our results show that many of the transforms give similar results in terms of performance, but their different properties as to time complexity, ability to operate in a fully streaming fashion, and number of generated features may make some more appropriate than others in particular applications, such as when streaming data or hardware limitations are extremely important (e.g., ocean turbine MCM/PHM).

The first objective was to establish a CFD model for a flow field test section to analyze the transport and dispersion of fire extinguishing agents in the presence of various clutter elements. To validate the use of the CFD model, the simulation results of the CFD model were compared to the experimental data and they show an agreement with the experimental data. The second objective was to present parametric studies to show the effects of the coflow speed, turbulence intensity and agent droplet size on the transport and dispersion of the agent particles downstream from the clutter elements.

Show moreComputers are becoming an integral part of our high school curriculum. Students use computers for computer-assisted instruction (CAI), word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, and computer programming. It is important to know the cognitive effects of each mode of computer use. The purpose of this study was to investigate transfer effects of a high school BASIC programming course on students' skills in mathematical modeling, procedural comprehension, and verbal problem solution. The sample consisted of 44 BASIC I students, 44 computer literacy students, and 44 students who had no computer training. Groups were matched on years of mathematics and on the grade received in the last mathematics course taken. Pretests and posttests were administered. Results indicated no significant differences in scores among groups for mathematical modeling or procedural comprehension; however, a significant difference was found among groups for verbal problem solution. The BASIC group scored significantly higher than the computer literacy group and the group with no exposure (p < .01). Auxiliary hypotheses examined possible interactions of group with gender, student level, prior grade received in mathematics, and years of high school mathematics. Significant main effects were found for both prior grade (p < .05) and years of mathematics (p < .05) with achievement directly related to excellence of grades and magnitude of coursework. Neither gender x treatment interaction, nor gender alone was found to be a significant source of score variance. Although the variance caused by student grade level was not significant, a significant interaction was found between group membership and grade level with respect to verbal problems. Sophomores in the literacy group scored higher than did sophomores in the nonexposure group; juniors in the nonexposure group scored higher than juniors in the computer literacy group. Suggestions for future research include studying effects (a) over an entire district, (b) on lower level mathematics students, and (c) on lower socioeconomic groups. Recommendations for computer education include teaching algebraic problem solving by computer and exposure of programming coursework to a wider population.

This research extends publicly available MATLABRª implementations of leading algorithms in the field and integrates them in a coherent and extensible way. Experiments are presented to compare the performance and accuracy between baseline and context-based detectors, using images from the recently published SUN09 dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that adding contextual information about the geometry of the scene improves the detector performance over the baseline case in 50% of the tested cases.

Show moreThe incorporation of an ejector refrigeration cycle with a high temperature PEM fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) presents a novel approach to combined heat and power (CHP) applications. An ejector refrigeration system (ERS) can enhance the flexibility of a CHP system by providing an additional means of utilizing the fuel cell waste heat besides domestic hot water (DHW) heating. This study looks into the performance gains that can be attained by incorporating ejector refrigeration with HT-PEMFC micro-CHP (mCHP) systems (1 to 5kWe). The effectiveness of the ERS in utilizing fuel cell waste heat is studied as is the relulting enhancement to overall system efficiency. A test rig specially constructed to evaluate an ERS under simulated HT-PEMFC conditions is used to test the concept and verify modeling predictions. In addition, two separate analytical models were constructed to simulate the ERS test rig and a HT-PEMFC/ERS mCHP system. The ERS test rig was simulated using a Matlab based model, while two residential sized HT-PEMFC/ERS mCHP systems were simulated using a Simulink model. Using U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) air conditioning and DHW load profiles, as well as data collected from a large residential monitoring study in Florida, the Simulink model provides the results in system efficiency gain associated with supporting residential space cooling and water heating loads. It was found that incorporation of an ERS increased the efficiency of a HT-PEMFC mCHP system by 8 t0 10 percentage points over just using the fuel cell waste heat for DHW. In addition, results from the Matlab ERS test rig model were shown to match well with experimental results.

In this reaction, the anomeric configuration of the sugar moiety of the donor is retained in the product. CA6 GTs includes the histo-blood group A and B GTs, a-galactosyltransferase (a3GT), Forssman glycolipid synthase (FS), isogloboside 3 synthase (iGb3) in mammals. a3GT and its products (a-Gal epitode) are present in most mammals but are absent in humans and old world primates because of inactivating mutations. The absence of a3GT and its products results in the production of anti-a-Gal epitope natural antibodies in these species., Up to date, the catalytic mechanisms of the CA6 GTs are not well understood. Based on previous structural and mutagenesis studies of bovine aB3GT, we investigated active site residues (His315, Asp316, Ser318, His319, and Lys359) that are highly conserved among CA6 GTs. We have also investigated the role of the C-terminal region by progressive C-terminal truncations. Findings from these studies clarify the functional roles of these residues in structure, catalysis, and specificity in these enzymes and have implications for their catalytic mechanisms. GTs are useful tools in synthesis of glycans for various applications in science and medicine. Methods for the large scale production of pure glycans are continuously being developed. We created a limited randomized combinatorial library based on knowledge of structural information and sequence analysis of the enzyme and its mammalian homologues., Two GalNAc-specific variants were identified from the library and one Glc-specific variant was identified by site-direct mutagenesis. The glycosyltransferase activities of these variants are expected to be improved by further screens of libraries which are designed using the variants as templates. The mammalian CA6 GTs that have been characterized to date are metal-independent and require the divalent cation, Mn2+ for activity. In some recently-discovered bacterial CA6 GTs, the DXD sequence that is present in eukaryotic GTs is replaced by NXN. We cloned and expressed one of these proteins from Bacteroides ovatus, a bacterium that has been linked with inflammatory bowel disease. Functional characterization shows it is a metal-independent monomeric GT that efficiently catalyzes the synthesis of oligosaccharides similar to human blood group A glycan., Mutational studies indicated that despite the lack of a metal cofactor there are similarities in structure-function relationships between the bacterial and vertebrate family 6 GTs.

Show moreThe present work uses statistical mechanics tools to investigate the dynamics of markets, prices, trades and wealth distribution. We studied the evolution of market dynamics in different stages of historical development by analyzing commodity prices from two distinct periods : ancient Babylon, and medieval and early modern England. We find that the first-digit distributrions of both Babylon and England commodity prices follow Benford's Law, indicating that the data represent empirical observations typically arising from a free market. Further, we find that the normalized prices of both Babylon and England agricultural commodities are characterized by stretched exponential distributions, and exhibit persistent correlations of a power law type over long periods of up to several centuries, in contrast to contemporary markets. Our findings suggest that similar market interactions may underlie the dynamics of ancient agricultural commodity prices, and that these interactions may remain stable across centuries. To further investigate the dynamics of markets, we present the analogy between transfers of money between individuals and the transfer of energy through particle collisions by means of the kinetic theory of gases. We introduce a theoretical framework of how micro rules of trading lead to the emergence of income and wealth distribution. Particularly, we study the effects of different types of distribution of savings/investments among individuals in a society and different welfare/subsidies redistribution policies. Results show that while considering savings propensities, the models approach empirical distributions of wealth quite well. The effect of redistribution better captures specific features of the distributions which earlier models failed to do. Moreover, the models still preserve the exponential decay observed in empirical income distributions reported by tax data and surveys.

Show moreWireless devices in wireless networks are powered typically by small batteries that are not replaceable nor recharged in a convenient way. To prolong the operating lifetime of networks, energy efficiency is indicated as a critical issue and energy-efficient resource allocation designs have been extensively developed. We investigated energy-efficient schemes that prolong network operating lifetime in wireless sensor networks and in wireless relay networks. In Chapter 2, the energy-efficient resource allocation that minimizes a general cost function of average user powers for small- or medium-scale wireless sensor networks, where the simple time-division multiple-access (TDMA) is adopted as the multiple access scheme. A class of Ç-fair cost-functions is derived to balance the tradeoff between efficiency and fairness in energy-efficient designs. Based on such cost functions, optimal channel-adaptive resource allocation schemes are developed for both single-hop and multi-hop TDMA sensor networks. In Chapter 3, optimal power control methods to balance the tradeoff between energy efficiency and fairness for wireless cooperative networks are developed. It is important to maximize power efficiency by minimizing power consumption for a given quality of service, such as the data rate; it is also equally important to evenly or fairly distribute power consumption to all nodes to maximize the network life. The optimal power control policy proposed is derived in a quasi-closed form by solving a convex optimization problem with a properly chosen cost-function. To further optimize a wireless relay network performance, an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based multi-user wireless relay network is considered in Chapter 4., In the OFDM approach, each subcarrier is dynamically assigned to a source- destination link, and several relays assist communication between pairs of source-destination over their assigned subcarriers. Using a class of Ç-fair cost-functions to balance the tradeoff between energy efficiency and fairness, jointly with optimal subcarrier and power allocation schemes at the relays. Relevant algorithms are derived in quasi-closed form. Lastly, the proposed energy-efficient schemes are summarized and future work is discussed in Chapter 5.

We develop new results which allow us to reduce a given impulse control problem to a sequence of iterated optimal stopping problems even though the original process is affected by interventions.

This study evaluates the efficacy of traditional interpolation methods for estimation of missing data in preserving site and regional statistics. New optimal spatial interpolation methods intended to preserve these statistics are also proposed and evaluated in this study. Rain gauge sites in the state of Kentucky are used as a case study, and several error and performance measures are used to evaluate the trade-offs in accuracy of estimation and preservation of site and regional statistics.

Show moreIn this work, we investigate input-to-state stability (ISS) and other related stability properties for control systems with time-delays. To overcome the complexity caused by the presence of the delays, we adopt a Razumikhin approach. The underlying idea of this approach is to treat the delayed variables as system uncertainties. The advantage of this approach is that one works in the more familiar territory of stability analysis for delay-free systems in the context of ISS instead of carrying out stability analysis on systems of functional differential equations. Our first step is to provide criteria on ISS and input-to-input stability properties based on the Razumikhin approach. We then turn our attention to large-scale interconnected systems. It has been well recognized that the small-gain theory is a powerful tool for stability analysis of interconnected systems. Using the Razumikhin approach, we develop small-gain theorems for interconnected systems consisting of two or more subs ystems with time-delays present either in the interconnection channels or within the subsystems themselves. As an interesting application, we apply our results to an existing model for hematopoesis, a blood cell production process,and improve the previous results derived by linear methods. Another important stability notion in the framework of ISS is the integral ISS (iISS) property. This is a weaker property than ISS, so it supplies to a larger class of systems. As in the case of ISS, we provide Razumikhin criteria on iISS for systems with delays. An example is presented to illustrate that though very useful in practice, the Razumikhin approach only provides sufficient conditions, not equivalent conditions. Finally, we address stability of time-varying systems with delays in the framework of ISS., In particular, we consider Lyapunov-Razumikhin functions whose decay rates are affected by time-varying functions that can be zero or even negative on some sets of non-zero measure. Our motivation is that it is often less demanding to find or construct such a Lyapunov function than one with a uniform decay rate. We also extend our small-gain theorems to the time-varying case by treating the time-varying system as an auxiliary time-invariant system.

Despite safety protocol, on a rare occasion an entirely preventable medical event, an accident, may occur. Delivering a treatment plan to the wrong patient is preventable, yet still is a clinically documented error. This research describes a computational method to identify patients with a novel machine learning technique to combat misadministration.The patient identification program stores face and fingerprint data for each patient. New, unlabeled data from those patients are categorized according to the library. The categorization of data by this face-fingerprint detector is accomplished with new machine learning algorithms based on Sparse Modeling that have already begun transforming the foundation of Computer Vision. Previous patient recognition software required special subroutines for faces and di↵erent tailored subroutines for fingerprints. In this research, the same exact model is used for both fingerprints and faces, without any additional subroutines and even without adjusting the two hyperparameters. Sparse modeling is a powerful tool, already shown utility in the areas of super-resolution, denoising, inpainting, demosaicing, and sub-nyquist sampling, i.e. compressed sensing. Sparse Modeling is possible because natural images are inherrently sparse in some bases, due to their inherrant structure. This research chooses datasets of face and fingerprint images to test the patient identification model. The model stores the images of each dataset as a basis (library). One image at a time is removed from the library, and is classified by a sparse code in terms of the remaining library. The Locally Competetive Algorithm, a truly neural inspired Artificial Neural Network, solves the computationally difficult task of finding the sparse code for the test image. The components of the sparse representation vector are summed by `1 pooling, and correct patient identification is consistently achieved 100% over 1000 trials, when either the face data or fingerprint data are implemented as a classification basis. The algorithm gets 100% classification when faces and fingerprints are concatenated into multimodal datasets. This suggests that 100% patient identification will be achievable in the clinal setting.

The results for a simulated peak velocity of 2 m/s in the presence of additive noise showed an RMSE of 0.23 m/s using moving average vs. 0.00018 m/s for the auto regressive approach. The SNR was 75 dB. The next objective was to compare the estimated Doppler velocity obtained using the two algorithms with the experimental values recorded in real time. The setup consisted of a receiver hydrophone attached to a towing carriage that moved with a known velocity with respect to a stationary acoustic source. The source transmitted 375 kHz pilot tone. The received pilot tone data were preprocessed using the two algorithms to estimate both Doppler shift and Doppler velocity. The accuracy of the algorithms was compared against the true velocity values of the carriage. The RMSE for a message from experiments conducted indoor for constant velocity of 0.4 m/s was 0.6055 m/s using moving average, 0.0780 m/s using auto regressive approach. The SNIR was 6.3 dB.

This kind of prognostic health monitoring (PHM) requires a condition-based maintenance (CBM) system that supports diagnostic and prognostic analysis of large amounts of data. Research in this field led to the creation of ISO13374 and the development of a standard open-architecture for machine condition monitoring. This thesis explores an implementation of such a system for ocean-based machinery using this framework and current open-standard technologies.
