Experiments have been performed which determined the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) of short cracks (a > 0.1mm) for five high strength steels (yield stress 370-570 MPa) in air and in natural seawater with and without cathodic protection. Attention was focused upon Regions I and Il of the classical FCGR-stress intensity range(Delta K) curve with particular consideration of the near-threshold behavior for short cracks. Show moreExperiments have been performed which determined the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) of short cracks (a > 0.1mm) for five high strength steels (yield stress 370-570 MPa) in air and in natural seawater with and without cathodic protection. Attention was focused upon Regions I and Il of the classical FCGR-stress intensity range(Delta K) curve with particular consideration of the near-threshold behavior for short cracks. Single edge notch (SEN) three-point bend specimens and a direct current potential drop (DCPD) crack monitoring system were employed, and test parameters simulated offshore structure conditions. The results indicated enhanced FCGR for short cracks compared to macrocracks by 3-20 times in air and 2-6 in seawater free-corroding(FC). Also, the Delta Kth for short cracks was apparently lower than for long ones in both environments. The transition from short to long crack behavior occurred at constant $\Delta$K in each environment (15.6 MPa m in air and 10.0 MPa m in seawater(FC)) irrespective of initial Delta K (Delta K(0)). The transition crack length ranged from 0.25 to 1.6 mm and was inversely proportional to $\Delta$K(0). Scanning electron microscope fractography showed that the mechanism of enhanced crack growth rate was associated with secondary crack (SC) formation in air and SC or inter-granular cracking (or both) in seawater (FC). The enhanced FCGR for short cracks was minimized by polarization to -950 mV(SCE). Through an elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis using the J-integral parameter it was found that the influence of plastic deformation at the crack tip was approximately independent of crack length (short versus long), and the linear-elastic fracture mechanics analysis gave a realistic representation for fatigue behavior.

Jacqueline Kennedy utilized this form of communication to express herself to create a new image of the White House, and to educate the American public on nuances. To her, the various aspects of fashion were strategies that allowed her to create a rhetoric all her own and one that was widely esteemed and emulated. Her creative use of style helped fulfill the public's desire for change in the White House. Essentially, Jackie added an aura that completed the "New Frontier" administration her husband promised. She had set new standards. Her popular style was copied not only because it was aesthetically pleasing, but because it constructed a compelling mystique composed in part by her wealth coupled with her high social and political standing.

This study examines how gender, race, and class are used to interpellate primarily female shoppers through store window advertising in the city of London, England. Using a feminist cultural and media studies approach, I analyze eight store window display advertisements as texts, and how their portrayals of women are presented to consumers. This study concludes that stereotypical, degrading, humiliating and violating representations of women and femininity abound in store window displays. Women are most likely to be portrayed as sex objects and signs of beauty. By representing store mannequins in sexual and fetishized poses, advertisers commodify female sexuality by associating it closely with beautiful, young bodies and the trappings of a glitzy lifestyle.

AE ads attack women and/or men in terms of self esteem based in appearance. A content analysis combined with a textual analysis produced results which show that women are attacked more directly, and more personally than men. The results demonstrate that the AE ads help to establish narrow standards of appearance for both women and men in society, however it is argued that these messages may lead to negative health behaviors, lower self confidence, and an unhealthy obsession to maintain one's appearance.

Show moreFatigue response of selected high strength steels in seawater was investigated under conditions relevant to tension leg platform tendon applications. This involved both freely corroding and cathodically protected, displacement controlled experiments upon constant taper, bending specimens which were either notched or welded, ground and post weld heat treated. High stress range freely corroding results indicated enhanced life compared to structural steel, whereas at low stress range the opposite was true. Corrections made to the high strength steel and structural steel data to correspond to similar test conditions revealed no benefit of enhanced material strength on corrosion fatigue life. Fatigue life for all cathodically protected specimens exceeded that for the freely corroding ones, and with one exception testing was terminated prior to failure. The single cathodically protected specimen failure involved a stress range approximately one-third the value for other specimens which were run-outs. This suggests that an environmental cracking process may operate precipitously at relatively low stress amplitudes (alternately, high R values). Fatigue life for freely corroding notched specimens was less than for grounded PWHT specimens, the difference increasing with decreasing amplitude.

The mechanical properties of the resins were monitored by tensile, flexure, and dynamic-mechanical tests. In addition, matrix shrinkage during cure and matrix swelling after immersion in water were monitored. The integrity of the fiber/matrix (F/M) interface of the composite systems was studied using the single fiber fragmentation test (SFFT). Macroscopic composites were examined using transverse tensile and transverse flexure tests to study the influence of the integrity of the matrix and F/M interface on the macroscopic response. In addition, for characterization of F/M debonding in the SFFT, a fracture mechanics model and modified test procedure were developed.

Show more"European Music and History Outline" is a reference guide for students. The scope is very broad and details will be found in books listed in the bibliography. All too frequently students study the development of music and the political history of Europe as two distinct and separate bodies of knowledge. The two, however, not only ran parallel, but were intertwined and interdependent. Often the "why" of a development or trend in music is explained by the political, social, and economic conditions that existed at the time. Since music, art, architecture, and literature are our only communication from the past, we are dependent on them to gain any insight into the political events and the attitudes and emotions of the people themselves. This facinating interaction is described by Henrick Van Loon in The Arts. In the outlines, the history progresses from one ruling monarch to the next with only the most significant events and people listed during specific reigns. The composers are listed chronologically by date of birth but are placed parallel to the events that occurred during their adult years. Outstanding composers are underlined in red. An index has been added to provide an easy reference to time and place in history.

Three test environments were used including marine atmospheric atmosphere, quiescent filtered seawater open to laboratory air and aerated seawater. Visual observation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques were primary testing methods; other characterizations included adhesion tape test, coating thickness measurements, holiday detection, optical microscopy, open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarization. It was found that IVD aluminum was a good candidate for replacement of environmentally sensitive coatings on AA2219-T87 and AISI 4340 steel substrates, respectively. The IVD aluminum coating provided good sacrificial protection and served as a good base for polyurethane topcoat systems. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was a suitable method to predict coating performance in the early stages of exposure.

First in The Innocents Abroad the writer traveled in European countries as an innocent tourist to experience European history and culture. He came to see, though, that the Catholic Church had excessive power there, that there were beggars and filth everywhere, and that the old masters' paintings were neglected. A Tramp Abroad continued satirizing the living conditions in Europe. The tone in the latter book is mostly pessimistic, and the author's increasing bitterness toward the Old World is well revealed in it.

Show moreThis research proposed to characterize any microbial induced degradation of carbon fiber/polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites from acid-producing bacteria (APB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to provide a measure of degradation of the composite system as a function of exposure time. In addition, mechanical testing and microscopic evaluation of the specimens were utilized to determine if changes in the EIS spectra as a function of exposure time correlated to changes in the mechanical properties. Results from most EIS scans were consistent with a well-consolidated and undamaged composite system. Changes in the EIS response of specimens exposed to the SRB environment were not matched by a reduction in the flexural strength. Mechanical testing also indicated no reduction in the flexural strength in any of the other exposure environments. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM)/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were inconclusive, though changes in the EDS spectra were seen. No definitive degradation was seen to occur in this composite system.

Show moreAs an educator, my greatest concern is to provide my students with instruction that will raise their level of understanding in mathematics. For geometry in particular, the van Hiele Theory is a way to measure a student's level of geometric understanding. Geometry instruction that raises a student's van Hiele level can be enhanced with two important resources, the ancient text of Euclid's Elements a contemporary dynamic geometry software program like the Geometer's Sketchpad. Euclid's Elements can be read as a book of geometric constructions rather than a list of theorems neatly arranged in logical order. The Geometer's Sketchpad is a convenient and efficient tool for geometric constructions. It is only natural to incorporate these two resources in geometry instruction. The logical structure of Euclid's Elements is intimidating to most learners, but teaching and learning need not be pursued logically linearly. This thesis is an attempt to incorporate some of the important constructions in Euclid's Elements with Geometer's Sketchpad, through the design of instruction modules in geometric constructions, to help students better understand geometry, and to improve their van Hiele level of understanding of geometry.

Separations are compared to those obtained on a widely-used octadecylsilane (ODS) phase. The separations of peptides on alumina-based stationary phases are found to be superior while separations of proteins are inferior as compared to those found on ODS phase. The superior performance of peptide separations on alumina-based columns is attributed to lower pore size and uniquely-shaped particles of the alumina. The retentions of peptides and proteins on both alumina and silica-based stationary phases are shown to be governed by hydrophobic interaction mechanisms.

As a wanderer acts and reacts to people and events, she is most often influenced by her mother, or mother-like figures, and other pairs around her. Welty's bonded women represent the historical, religious, psychological, and sociological studies of this interwoven human relationship; her characters are subtly crafted to develop a myriad of close and, at the same time, distant bonds. Welty emphasizes the mothers and daughters of Losing Battles, Delta Wedding, and The Optimist's Daughter though Virgie of The Golden Apples represents the strongest point for the conclusion that the mother-daughter relationship supports and enhances Welty's works.

The chloride concentration, [Cl-], at which the corrosion process initiates is termed the critical chloride concentration or chloride threshold, [Cl-]th. One of the purposes of this research was to determine the [Cl-]th for various reinforcing alloys. Furthermore, the time-to-corrosion (TIC) was measured to determine the time at which bars become active. Both parameters, [Cl-]th and TTC, were found to be distributed; therefore, statistical analyses were performed to forecast the probability of activity. A new experimental procedure was introduced to increase the TTC data set by electrically isolating the top bars as they became active. The research also compared the [Cl-] for core samples with those values obtained from along the top rebar trace. In general, this analysis demonstrated that core sample [Cr] was lower than at the rebar-trace.

All of cTnl knockout homozygous mice die at 17-18 days after birth. Some of cTnI(R192H) transgenic mice die at early life stages, some mice develop heart failure at late stages. High-resolution ultrasound imaging and Doppler echocardiography have been used to evaluate cardiac function on cTnl deficient mice and cTnl(R192H) transgenic mice. cTnI mice have damaged relaxation with gradually decreased E/A ratio(E/A<1). FS and cardiac output dramatically decrease on 17-day-o1d cTnI mice indicating severe cardiac dysfunction. We find that the damaged heart function is correspondent with the Tnl expression level decline. 6-8 weeks transgenic mice have shown that the dimension of left and right atria increase. In 15-month-old transgenic mice, the E/A ratio shows a pseudonormal pattern indicating a diastolic dysfunction. This study demonstrate that damaged heart function is tightly associated with Tnl levels in the heart.

Show moreThe development of a parallel data structure and an associated elemental decomposition algorithm for explicit finite element analysis for massively parallel SIMD computer, the DECmpp 12000 (MasPar MP-1) machine, is presented, and then extended to implementation on the MIMD computer, Cray-T3D. The new parallel data structure and elemental decomposition algorithm are discussed in detail and is used to parallelize a sequential Fortran code that deals with the application of isoparametric elements for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of shells of revolution. The parallel algorithm required the development of a new procedure, called an 'exchange', which consists of an exchange of nodal forces at each time step to replace the standard gather-assembly operations in sequential code. In addition, the data was reconfigured so that all nodal variables associated with an element are stored in a processor along with other element data. The architectural and Fortran programming language features of the MasPar MP-1 and Cray-T3D computers which are pertinent to finite element computations are also summarized, and sample code segments are provided to illustrate programming in a data parallel environment. The governing equations, the finite element discretization and a comparison between their implementation on Von Neumann and SIMD-MIMD parallel computers are discussed to demonstrate their applicability and the important differences in the new algorithm. Various large scale transient problems are solved using the parallel data structure and elemental decomposition algorithm and measured performances are presented and analyzed in detail. Results show that Cray-T3D is a very promising parallel computer for finite element computation. The 32 processors of this machine shows an overall speedup of 27-28, i.e. an efficiency of 85% or more and 128 processors shows a speedup of 70-77, i.e. an efficiency of 55% or more. The Cray-T3D results demonstrated that this machine is capable of outperforming the Cray-YMP by a factor of about 10 for finite element problems with 4K elements, therefore, the method of developing the parallel data structure and its associated elemental decomposition algorithm is recommended for implementation on other finite element code in this machine. However, the results from MasPar MP-1 show that this new algorithm for explicit finite element computations do not produce very efficient parallel code on this computer and therefore, the new data structure is not recommended for further use on this MasPar machine.

This series of experiments was designed to address two major questions concerning children's false-memory creation: (1) Are events that involve physical harm content more difficult to implant than events that do not involve physical harm content? and (2) Are individuals with particular cognitive and personality attributes more likely to create false-memories than others? In Experiment 1, 27 first-graders were presented with descriptions of two fictitious events (1 physical harm, 1 no physical...

In Experiment 1, 27 first-graders were presented with descriptions of two fictitious events (1 physical harm, 1 no physical harm) and two true events (1 physical harm, 1 no physical harm). Furthermore, individual differences in image descriptions, inhibition, verbal intelligence, working memory capacity and teacher ratings of cognitive and personality attributes were assessed. Results indicated that children generated more detailed accounts for fictitious events that did not involve physical harm in comparison to those that did. Furthermore, individual differences in image descriptions, verbal intelligence and teacher ratings of creativity, extroversion and risk taking were found. For Experiment 2, one-half of participants were presented with descriptions of two fictitious and two true events that involved physical harm content. The other one-half of participants were presented with descriptions of two fictitious and 2 true events that did not involve physical harm content. Furthermore, all children were told that two of the events (1 fictitious, 1 true) happened when they were very young and that the other two events (1 fictitious, 1 true) happened during the previous year. Individual differences in picture memory, inhibition and creativity were also assessed. The analyses failed to yield significant differences for event type or age of event occurrence. However, individual differences in creativity were related to children's false reports.

Evangeline Walton's fictionalization of the Four Branches of the Mabinogion projects an alternative focus onto the collection of Welsh myths. Previous treatments and translations from Welsh to English perpetuate the traditional interpretation of the Mabinogion as the fragmented story of the Hero-God's life from conception to death. Show moreEvangeline Walton's fictionalization of the Four Branches of the Mabinogion projects an alternative focus onto the collection of Welsh myths. Previous treatments and translations from Welsh to English perpetuate the traditional interpretation of the Mabinogion as the fragmented story of the Hero-God's life from conception to death. Walton's work changes this focus and subtly changes the structural order of the tales. Walton offers a narrative from the perspective of the female world view, as opposed to the male perspective which has survived with the tales from the time of their discovery in the Middle Ages. In a comparison of Walton's tetralogy to the translations of Guest, Jones, Gantz, and Ford, it becomes clear that Walton's use of symbols and structure, and her alternative focus change the Hero tale, or Boy-Mare tale, into an epic structured upon the decline of the Goddess in Celtic culture. The application of Mythological and Psychofeminist critical theories to the recurring themes, symbols, and archetypes in Walton's Mabinogion will demonstrate the existence of this nontraditional perspective.
