Show moreThis study explores the relationship among leadership style, school work culture, and student achievement in Catholic elementary schools. The relationships (a) between the leader style and student achievement, (b) between the school's work culture and student achievement, and (c) among leaders' styles, school work culture, student achievement and contextual factors were explored. A descriptive design, primarily quantitative and correlational in nature, was employed. It was concluded that school leadership had an indirect effect on student achievement in parochial schools in Florida. Furthermore, school work culture (school planning, program development, staff development, and assessment) directly impacted student achievement. The contextual variables of socioeconomic status and school size combined did not moderate the relationship among leadership style, school work culture and fourth-grade students' reading achievement scores.

Kearns, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Xerox Corporation, author of "An Education Recovery Plan for America" in Winning the Brain Race: A Bold Plan to Make Our Schools Competitive. Factor analysis was used to group the 36 specific recommendations into their "natural" groupings as perceived by the responding superintendents. This technique revealed that the natural psychological groupings in the eyes of the respondents were not the same as Kearns asserted. The study shows that the reform hierarchy, based on the perceptions of the superintendents, is actually three layers deep with Kearns' six categories being broken down into a bottom tier of 14 discrete areas.

Show moreThe significance of the transmission of animal viruses in sewage polluted fresh and marine waters becomes an increasingly important factor as more and more evidence is presented to support the fact that in the case of many viral types one virus particle constitutes an infective dose. Therefore it is very important that a method of determining the extent of viral pollution in sewage polluted bodies of marine and fresh water be found. The longevity of f2 bacteriophage in both marine and fresh water sewage polluted samples was determined, and shown to be 3 to 4 days for marine water and 8 days for fresh water. It was also shown that the culture medium in which the f2 phage was produced, and the larger macromolecular polymers commonly found associated with sewage had a favorable affect in increasing the longevity of f2 phage. It was shown that f2 bacteriophage could be used to follow the initial dispersion of the sewage boil arising from an ocean outfall sewerage system. From these results it was concluded that f2 bacteriophage could be used for more detailed studies concerned with the transmission of viruses in sewage polluted waters.

An attempt was made to decide the extent to which music was included in the curriculum, the strengths and weaknesses of instruction of these offerings, and the advisability of planning inservice training programs in music for the classroom teachers to strengthen the total presentation. The method of research employed was a review of the literature and the formulation of three types of questionnaires that were sent to the elementary classroom teachers, principals, and music specialists. The classroom teacher data were coded, transferred to cards, and tabulated electronically. The principal and music specialist data were tabulated by the researcher with the aid of an assistant. The data were presented with reference to background, scheduling, and areas of strengths and weaknesses in musical instruction, through a series of tables and figures, an analysis of each, an interpretation of the results, and recommendations for improving instruction. It was determined that musical opportunities afforded the students of the Broward County school system varied to such a degree that in-service training programs in music need to be planned in the areas of instructing instrumental, creative, and singing activities, as these received the lowest cumulative percentages from the tabulation of the classroom teachers' self-analysis. The strengths of the classroom teachers' musical instruction lay in the utilization of listening activities.

The method of research used consisted of questionnaires sent to string specialists, elementary principals and fifth-grade teachers. These data were tabulated by the researcher. The data were presented with reference to numbers of participating students, number and frequency of classes, duration of the experimental program and working condition for the classes. These were illustrated through a series of tables and figures with an analysis of each and interpretation of the results and recommendations for improving future experimental string classes. It was determined that all of the string teachers had similar problems in scheduling classes, transporting instruments, and finding adequate classroom space. The mutual strength of the program was the enthusiasm of the fifth-grade students during the five days of class instruction.

Two groups of ten subjects each were used, the C, or college educated group , and the 0 , or non-college educated group. Each S was given the same word association test. The Ss were first given four "choice" stimuli, two English and two Spanish words, and were instructed to respond to each of these in either English or Spanish or both within a period of forty-five seconds. The "choice" stimuli were followed by "restricted" stimuli. The restricted stimuli consisted of ten English words and their Spanish equivalents. The Ss were instructed to give their associations in the same language as the stimulus word , within a period of forty-five seconds. The Ss ' responses were re corded and later transcribed for study. After careful analysis of the data , the following results were obtained: (1) the C group did not differ significantly from the 0 group in the number of associations to the "restricted" English stimuli; (2) the groups did not differ significantly in the percentage of English responses when given a choice of languages in which to associate; and (3) the 0 group had a significantly faster primary response time than did the C group.

Show moreParent involvement literature reveals that parents play an important role in student academic achievement. The School Advisory Councils are the major outlet for parents to engage in decision-making and advocacy skills in Broward County. The School Improvement Plans are the major output of the School Advisory Councils and this document contains many strategies that schools should follow in order to increase achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine if School Improvement Plans and school decision-making and advocacy had any correlation to academic achievement. The researcher investigated this utilizing two research methods: a survey to investigate if school decision-making and advocacy were correlated to student academic achievement; and content analysis to investigate if School Improvement Plans were correlated to student academic achievement. The study gathered data from 38 middle schools and 29 high schools in Broward County, Florida, during the academic year of 2004-2005. The researcher used standard five of the National PTA Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs to design the Decision-Making and Advocacy Survey to determine the perceptions of decisionmaking and advocacy. The researcher surveyed two of the key players with leadership roles of the School Advisory Council: the principal and the SAC chairperson. The survey was pilot tested for its reliability. The researcher also used the School Improvement Plan from each middle school and high school in Broward County in order to conduct the content analysis. The survey and content analysis data were analyzed using linear correlation, multiple correlation, and multiple regression. A major finding of this research was the significant correlation between the Math strategies found in the School Improvement Plans and the Math achievement scores, as well as the correlation between the Writing strategies found in the School Improvement Plans and school grades. In general, it can be concluded that the strategies found in the School Improvement Plans may increase student achievement, particularly in Math and Writing.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of male principals in the State of Florida toward women aspiring to school-based administrative positions. Specifically, the study examined the following: (1) the overall attitudes of male principals toward women, (2) their attitudes toward selected behavior traits, (3) their attitudes toward selected feminine barriers, (4) their attitudes toward selected manager traits, and (5) their overall attitudes toward women with relationship to five selected demographic characteristics: organizational level of employment, age, race, length of time in position, and school enrollment size. In order to assess the attitudes of male principals toward women, a questionnaire was mailed to 700 selected principals in public schools throughout the State of Florida. Of the 700 questionnaires mailed, 74 percent (517) were completed and returned. The questionnaire contained five demographic data items and twenty-one opinion statements which constituted the attitude scale. A seven step Likert-type scale was used to measure the strength of reported attitudes. The seven possible response choices for each item on the attitude scale were as follows: (1) strongly agree, (2) agree, (3) slightly agree, (4) neither agree nor disagree, (5) slightly disagree, (6) disagree, and (7) strongly disagree. Eleven of the opinion statements were positively directed so that agreement response choices indicated favorable attitudes toward women, and ten statements were negatively directed so that agreement response choices indicated unfavorable attitudes. In order to facilitate analysis of the data, each response choice was assigned a numeric weight which ranged from one to seven with the higher weights being assigned to the response choices that were more favorable toward women. Therefore, the higher a respondent's total score on the twenty-one opinion statements, the more favorable were his attitudes toward women. Analysis of the data clearly indicated that male principals in the State of Florida reported favorable attitudes toward women. Only 1.4 percent of the respondents expressed overall attitudes that were unfavorable toward women. A separation of the Women as Managers Scale into its three sub-elements indicated that 98.1 percent expressed favorable attitudes toward selected behavior traits, 90 percent expressed favorable attitudes toward selected feminine barriers and 97.5 percent expressed favorable attitudes toward selected manager traits. However, the intensity of favorable attitudes varied with each opinion statement. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients indicated that the relationship of the five selected demographic variables to male principals' overall attitudes toward women was not statistically significant at the .05 level. The principals' overall attitudes toward women aspiring to school-based administrative positions were not significantly related to their organizational level of employment, age, race, length of time in position, or their school enrollment size. The study concluded with the following recommendations: (1) The study should be repeated with the same target population using a different instrument; (2) An attitude scale should be developed that specifically measures attitudes of principals toward women; (3) Further research is necessary in order to determine if attitude difference exists due to sex of the principal or to the nature of attitudes unique to the principalship; and (4) A method of assessing attitudes of male principals that excludes the social desirability factor identified as prevalent in attitude questionnaires needs to be developed.

Show moreTissue Inhibitors of Metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are produced by a wide variety of cell types. Similar to matrixins, the expression of TIMPs in the tissue is also controlled during tissue remodeling and physiological conditions to maintain a balance in the metabolism of extracellular matrix. Disruption of this balance can result in diseases associated with uncontrolled turnover of matrix, such as arthritis, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Some of the biological processes TIMPs participate in include: regulation of cell morphology and organ morphogenesis, inhibition of angiogenesis, steroidogenesis, and tissue remodeling. One major function of TIMPs is inhibition of Matrix Metaloproteinase (MMPs). This project used bioinformatic techniques to identify two Caenorhabditis elegans TIMP cDNA cloned by BLAST searching of EST database. These TIMP cDNA were amplified, cloned and expressed, proteins were purified. Kinetic studies were carried out to evaluate the inhibitory activities against various MMPs and TACE. This research project will provide some insight on the function of C. elegans TIMPs.

The missionaries had pioneered in furthering education in Samoa for the main purpose of training native pastors and they made great numbers of the people highly literate in their own tongue. However, the naval administration, from the beginning of their rule, adopted a policy of establishing a secular school system for the people. In addition to the work of the missionaries , the naval administrator, on July 6, 1901, requested that the Navy Department allot money for the purpose of establishing a school near the naval station. This was to mark the start of many appeals for federal assistance to establish a complete range of public schools in American Samoa.

Each of those blocks is usually designed with different techniques and algorithms, which may need significant computational and hardware resources. In this thesis we present a surveillance system based on an optical flow concept, as a main unit on which other functional blocks depend. Optical flow limitations, capabilities and possible problem solutions are discussed in this thesis. Moreover, performance evaluation of various methods in handling occlusions, rigid and non-rigid object classification, segmentation and tracking is provided for a variety of video sequences under different ambient conditions. Finally, processing time is measured with software that shows an optical flow hardware block can improve system performance and increase scalability while reducing the processing time by more than fifty percent.

Show moreFamily 6 Glycosyltransferases (GT6s) are involved in the biosynthesis of complex glycans and can be found in all vertebrates, cyanophages, and some bacteria and unicellular eukaryotes. Understanding variations within family 6 GTs is important because of the roles of their products in cellular recognition, intercellular interactions, pathogenicity, and immunity and is likewise important for understanding the evolution of GTs. PaGT6 (from Parchlamydia acanthamoebae) and α3GT (from Bos taurus) both require a divalent metal ion for catalysis which binds to a DXD motif. In BoGT6a from Bacteroides ovatus a NXN motif replaces DXD, and activity is metal-independent. However, mutating the NXN motif in BoGT6a to DXD did not introduce metal-dependency, indicating that metal-dependency is linked to additional differences. Calorimetric studies have shown that the presence of a divalent metal ion enhances UDP and donor substrate binding to PaGT6 and causes an increase in the entropy of the interaction. Protein modelling of PaGT6 has revealed that the presence of Mn2+ allows a hydrogen bond to form between Asp 97 and UDP-GalNAc, causing the donor substrate to bend and form hydrogen bonds with His 119, Asn 229, Lys 228, and Arg 234. These interactions do not occur in the absence of Mn2+. Investigation of acceptor substrate binding revealed that the presence of UDP enhances acceptor substrate binding to BoGT6a and PaGT6. Calorimetric titrations of BoGT6a with 2-fucosyllactose in the absence and presence of UDP showed that UDP increases the affinity of 2-fucosyllactose 16-fold with little effect on ΔH. Measurements of ΔCp for 2-fucosyllactose binding indicate that there is not a hydrophobic effect for the binding of 2-fucosyllactose. The preferred acceptor substrate for the bovine and Bacteroides GT6 has a β-1,4 linked galactose, but P. acanthamoebae GT6 prefers an acceptor substrate with a β-1,3 linked galactose. The N-terminus of the catalytic domain of bacterial GT6s is truncated by 47 residues relative to the catalytic domain of bovine α3GT. Removal of this region from α3GT results in an unfolded protein, indicating that although this region is not directly involved in substrate binding, it forms interactions necessary for the stability of the catalytic domain.

This research addresses these concerns by studying the annual Honor Roll list of hospitals, a listing published each year by the U.S. News and World Report that ranks the best medical facilities in the country. To accomplish this, we aimed to analyze the relationship between the hospitals listed on the Honor Roll and the mortality rates of the counties in which each hospital is located. Upon completion of this research, we were unable to find a significant difference between mortality rates of counties with Honor Roll hospitals and those without.

However, there is a dearth of research about the manner of deaths of older adults who used, misused, or abused opioids. Methods: This secondary analysis utilized data from the Florida Drug and Law Enforcement (FDLE) agency between 2014 - 2018. A generalized linear model with a normal probability distribution was used to examine which social determinants or factors such as race, income, education level, percentage of people in poverty, and population density predicted opioid death rate in Florida. Chi-square statistics were used to determine the association between gender, race, and opioid-related deaths (ORD), and the relationship of the manner of death to the opioid drugs involved. The trend of opioid death rate was also analyzed by Florida county and through the data years 2014 to 2018.
