Show moreThe separation of powers doctrine is a pillar of American government, characterized by the separation and balancing of legislative, executive and judicial powers. Throughout its history, the Supreme Court has alternated between formalism and functionalism in its separation of powers jurisprudence. The Court relied upon a greater use of the formalistic separation of powers over a functional, balancing of governmental powers as a way to check congressional delegations of authority to administrative agencies. While conservative formalists invalidated numerous presidential initiatives and congressional delegations to agencies, liberal justices used the functional model after 1937 to uphold delegations of power until the Court revived the formal-functional debate. Analysis of Court decisions regarding congressional versus presidential power over agencies is essential for understanding the revival of the debate over agency viability within tripartite government in three landmark cases: INS v. Chadha, (1983) Bowsher v. Synar (1986) and Morrison v. Olson (1988).

Heterozygous mutation in PTEN, which encode a negative regulator of the PI3K-mTR signaling pathway, causes the macrocephaly/autism syndrome. Mice with germline heterozygous Pten deletion (Pten+/-) exhibit both brain overgrowth and social behavioral deficits. Here, we showed that reduction of Igf-1 receptor (Igf-1r), which is an upstream receptor of PI3K-mTOR pathway, in Pten+/- mice rescues the neuronal overgrowth of cortical layer V neurons, which is associated with social behavior deficits shown in the Pten+/- mice. These are promising results shows that a pharmacological agent, one that blocks Igf1r, could recover the damage done by the Pten mutation. However, the pathway being targeted is a cellular pathway within the brain and any potential pharmacological agent must be able to cross the blood brain barrier, and must alter the pathway within the brain and not influence other pathways within the system.

Show moreA study was made of the photoconductivity transients in zinc-doped polycrystalline stannic oxide. The current rises and decays during and following illumination were observed for varying time, intensity, and wavelength of illumination, and for different ambient temperatures. This experimental data was analyzed assuming that the photoconductivity transients are surface controlled processes involving the chemisorption and desorption of oxygen. Models used to describe the observed data were based on either an Elovich-type phenomenological rate equation or a mechanistic physical description of the processes involved. These models, using the observed data, were then compared for ranges of validity and self-consistency.

Show moreThe impingement of supersonic jets on surfaces is of interest because of its important application to jet blast deflectors (JBD), and short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft (STOVL) during hover. Typically, on an aircraft carrier deck, the impingement of the jet blast on the deflector generates impingement tones, and structural vibrations, not only on the JBD but also on the ship deck. Therefore, apart from direct transmission of jet noise to the gallery level, there is a component of noise transmitted due to the impingement of the jet on the JBD. The objectives of this work are to study the pressure spectra (i) on a flat plate, and separately on a cone due to axisymmetric impingement of a supersonic underexpanded cold jet issuing from a convergent-divergent nozzle and (ii) on a plane jet impinging on a finite plate and an adjoining ground plane due to the impingement of a planar jet on the plate. The characteristics of the surface pressure fluctuations are numerically investiga ted using WIND-US 2.0. The time-dependent, compressible Euler equations for perfect gas are employed for the present computations. The impingement distance between the jet nozzle and the deflector plate, and the plate inclination with respect to the incident jet are varied. The impingement zone stagnation bubble and a high-speed radial jet with several embedded structures (shocklets) were identified on the perpendicular plate. Flows involving cones reveal the presence of detached cone shocks, enclosing a recirculation zone. The location and magnitude of the peak pressure on the cone surface are a strong function of the cone apex angle. For the two-dimensional jet impingement on angled plate the peak value of pressure occurs at normal jet impingement. The pressure at the intersection point of the plate and the ground plane is sometimes higher than the peak pressure on the plate. Beyond this point there is a sharp decrease in pressure. As the flow accelerates, an oblique shock is, Beyond this point there is a sharp decrease in pressure. As the flow accelerates, an oblique shock is sometimes formed in this grazing flow region. A recirculation region at the lower lip of the nozzle was observed for all the separation distances and plate inclinations.

However, the purpose of this paper is to propose an alternative notion that suggests that digital interactive mediums – such as contemporary games and virtual technologies – have revitalized Surrealism, enabling game developers to build upon the initial philosophies made popular by the avant-garde movement.

Freudian psychoanalysis seeks to achieve a measure of psychic health for the individual through making the unconscious conscious, thereby resolving partially the inherent conflict between the pleasure principle of the unconscious id and the reality principle of the conscious ego. Surrealism hoped to obtain this same end on a collective basis through the use of symbols generated by the unconscious and expressed poetically in literary and visual art. "I believe in the future resolution of these two states, dream and reality, which are seemingly so contradictory, into a kind of absolute reality, a surreality," Surrealism's chief spokesman, Andre Breton wrote in the Manifesto.

SURREALISTIC TRENDS IN NIKOLAUS LENAU'S POETRY (AUSTRIA).

-
Abstract/Description
-
The nineteenth century Austrian poet Nikolaus Lenau used strange associations of words and ideas which are reminiscent of the bizarre combinations of realism and fantasy the surrealists used at the beginning of the twentieth century. Categories of surrealistic devices are set up, and surrealistic paintings and the poetry of Lenau are discussed using these guidelines.

There was no difference found in rainfall abundance or in temperature at the four sites, however mosquito production was significantly different. Baseline data of the population was established and two sites produced high numbers of Cx. nigripalpus. One of these two sites acted like an island for resting mosquitoes, attracting them from surrounding areas; the other site had continuous standing water and constant mosquito numbers. Environmental parameters on population density and structure were also examined at the two sites. Only one of the sites showed correlation with rainfall in population density and structure. Both sites were identified for use in future St. Louis Encephalitis surveillance programs.

A brief historical survey of linguistics, learning theories, and teaching strategies is given, dating from pre-structuralism through to poststructuralism. Several analysis and reduction techniques were proposed for reducing these effects on signal integrity. This work solves the misconception by encompassing different problems Chat effect signal integrity and can be good reference for a integrated circuit designer. The objective is to analyze these modeling methods, reduction techniques, tools and make recommendations that aids in developing a methodology for perfect design closure with an emphasis on signal integrity. These recommendations would form a basis for developing a methodology to analyze interference effects at higher levels of abstraction.

Show moreThis thesis, based on (ISO/ANSI) X3H2-93-091 Working Draft Database Language SQL (SQL3) (Melton, 1993, 1994), systematically specifies the characteristics and manipulation of object-oriented techniques in SQL3. An essential difference between SQL3 and the previous SQL standards lies in the fact that the abstract data type (ADT) facility supported in SQL3 causes SQL3 to become an extended relational data model rather than a "pure" relational data model. This master's thesis focuses on the careful examination and explication of ADTs and the corresponding families--type templates as they are used in SQL3. These topics involve four aspects: (1) general concepts and technologies in object-oriented data models, (2) the definition of ADTs and their advantages, (3) the manipulation of ADTs in SQL3, including type templates (e.g., distinct types, explicit ADTs, user-defined type templates, standard type templates) and collection types, (4) "tables of ADTs" (row types with table), and (5) conclusions and challenges.
