Show moreInvestigation of the spatio-temporal movements of leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) and ocean sunfishes (family Molidae), as well as analyses of their prey, support the hypothesis that they may occupy similar ecological niches. This study examined the spatial and temporal occurrences of sunfishes (Mola mola and Masturus lanceolatus) and leatherbacks in the western Atlantic Ocean and assessed dietary overlap. Analyses of leatherback and sunfish distributions, estimated from aerial surveys, showed greater spatial and temporal overlap along the Northeast coast of North America than in the Gulf of Mexico. Both species co-occur more often during warmer months. Pelagic longline fisheries bycatch data and aerial survey data revealed slightly different trends in spatio-temporal distributions. Nematocysts found within gastrointestinal tract contents of stranded animals indicate that they may feed on similar prey, including cnidarians in the classes Scyphozoa, Hydrozoa, and Cubozoa.

A key factor in collecting data was the placement of the observer with respect to the proximity of the gibbons being observed. In this study the gibbons spent more time on the grass when observing them at close range. The gibbons spent a greater amount of time on the brachiating structure when observed from a distance. Despite complications in data collection, the gibbons displayed preference for the redesigned structure, and were observed brachiating more frequently on the stable supports than the rope supports in the unmodified enclosure.

To address the above mentioned issues, Motorola Labs have proposed an algorithm for synchronizing the beacons in a wireless personal area network. In this thesis, extensive study of the proposed beacon time synchronization algorithm is done using OPNET as a simulation tool. Simulation is carried out by designing a detailed model of the algorithm using IEEE 802.15.4 as a reference. In depth analysis of the simulation results has been carried out. The results obtained are compared with those of existing time synchronization methods.

Show moreThe measurement of the Scattering function of time-variant fading channels is of strong interest in the field of underwater acoustic communications, as it indicates the limitations of the channel capacity. It also helps reducing the development time of acoustic communication systems and the need for on-site tests using so-called "fading simulators". The Scattering function is interpreted as the expected power received at a given time-delay and frequency shift for a given signal transmitted through the acoustic channel. It has been estimated using a fourth-moment method developed by Kailath from 18 to 30 kHz, 8-ms broad-band chirps and 20--28 kHz, 28-ms pseudo noise sequences. These signals were transmitted periodically in the shallow coastal waters of South Florida from a static source, and recorded from a 64-channel receiver array located at a distance of 1000 meters. Spatial beamforming has been applied to study the spatial sensitivity of the scattering function.

In this study, the venom of a common shallow water cone snail that thrives in the Indo-Pacific to the Panamic region, Conus tessulatus , was analyzed; conopeptide components of the venom were isolated and investigated by high performance liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and automated Edman degradation sequencing. Five new peptide sequences are herein reported, among which there are three members of the M superfamily, one alpha conotoxin, and a conophan. The novel peptides comprise a partial peptide library of this particular cone.

Most marine systems involve cables for mooring, deployment, recovery, or towing; however, estimating the response of these systems is difficult because of their non-linear behavior. Thus, numerical models are used to simulate submerged cabled systems. At FAU, many mission specific cable simulations have been developed, but no single, all encompassing software package exists. This thesis develops a Windows(c) based software package to quickly and easily create FEA models of underwater cabled systems and simulate their response. The model is based on a discrete finite element analysis using linear elements. The software provides fully integrated and interactive Graphical User Interfaces with a 3-dimensional graphical display of the model, and integrates adapted data analysis and visualization tools. The software provides an easy and efficient way to simulate an underwater system involving cables.

The Karhunen-Loeve method provides a set of modes which describe the turbulent flow without the assumption of stationarity. A method is described to obtain broad band noise calculations when the mean turbulent flow varies with time and produces non stationary turbulence. A comparison of the numerical results obtained with the results from the paper of reference [1] shows the characteristics of time varying sound radiation. The various mathematical formulae will give a starting point to the analysis of real time varying flows, which are not considered in this thesis.

A major drawback of these approaches is that they do not address the need to make use of existing applications whose design cannot be changed. To overcome this drawback, a middleware architecture called "Concord" is proposed. Concord is based on a simple model which consists of Lookup Server and Database. The rewards for this simple model are many. First, Concord uses the existing computing infrastructure. Second, Concord standardizes the interfaces for all services and platforms. Third new services can be added dynamically without any need for reconfiguration. Finally, Concord consists of Database that can maintain and publish the active set of available resources. Thus Concord provides a solid system for integration of various entities to provide seamless connectivity and enable proactive behavior.

We extend its application to non-stationary signals and develop the multitaper spectrogram. We test the spectrograms with simulated non-stationary autoregressive process of order 2 as the magnitude of its poles vary between 0 and 1 and the angle of the poles vary between 0 and pi. Our results show that the multitaper spectral estimate can be parameterized and is more accurate than others tested for non-sinusoidal signals. We also show applications to aero-acoustic data analysis.

Show moreI explored aspects of men's and women's short-term sexual psychology as a function of a potential short-term partner's relationship status. 468 subjects reported how likely they would be to pursue a casual sexual relationship with a member of the opposite sex who was (1) married, (2) not married but has casual sexual partners, (3) or not married and has no casual sexual partners. Guided by sperm competition theory, I predicted and found that men prefer short-term sex partners who are not already involved in relationships, thus presenting a lower risk of sperm competition. Because women sometimes use short-term sexual relationships to acquire long-term partners, I predicted and found that women prefer short-term sexual partners who are not already involved in relationships. Finally, across all three levels of the imagined partner's relationship status, men reported a greater likelihood than did women of pursuing a casual sexual relationship. Discussion addresses methodological limitations.

Five attachment coping strategies were assessed (preoccupied, avoidant, indecisive, coercive, and caregiving), and four aspects of perceived maternal behavior were assessed (reliable support, harassment, overprotection, and fear induction). Numerous meaningful associations were found between the attachment measures and the perceived parenting measures. For instance, perceived maternal overprotectiveness was significantly related to preoccupied and indecisive coping strategies, whereas perceived maternal harassment, fear induction, and reliable support were related in various ways to avoidant, indecisive, coercive, and caregiving attachment coping strategies. In general, the associations found between the perceived parenting measures and the attachment measures support the construct validity of the self-report measures of attachment and confirm that self-report measures are a fruitful way to assess attachment style in middle childhood.

As a consequence, the critical chloride threshold to initiate corrosion of the steel is reached sooner than otherwise expected. This research was performed using two different methods. First, chloride analyses were performed on chloride exposed concrete blocks by taking cores in the concrete and drillings along the trace of the top bars. Second, concrete blocks models were analyzed by finite element analysis and the effect of the obstruction by the bar quantified. The role of the reinforcing bar in the chloride diffusional flow is discussed considering these two methods.

This study examined scaffolding in email messages between non-native speakers learning about German culture. The instructor used Internet resources to teach aspects of the target culture to students enrolled in a second semester German course. Email exchanges between two separate classes of German students were designed to elicit scaffolding. Unlike previous studies that have concentrated on the grammatical competence of the students, this study focused on the development of cultural competence as subjects discussed four topics of German culture via email messages. Scaffolded cultural help enables participants to develop an opinion about selected cultural issues. Scaffolded help was found in few email messages and the analysis suggests that participants discussed cultural issues by exchanging factual knowledge rather than providing scaffolded help. Concludes with considerations for further research and teaching.

Here, the relationship between men's mate-retention and violence against women was investigated. In Study 1, men reported their use of mate-retention behaviors and violence in their relationships. Study 2 assessed women's reports of their partners' mate-retention behaviors and their partners' violence against them. Study 3 secured husbands' reports of their mate retention and wives' reports of their husbands' violence. As predicted, and across all studies, men's mate-retention behaviors predicted violence against romantic partners.

Show moreMany studies have been devoted to investigating the process by which individuals make dispositional attributions about the people that they encounter. A surprisingly small number of studies have been directed at examining the process by which individuals may detect change in their impressions of people once they have been formed. In fact, traditional social psychology literature suggests that individuals will engage in a number of processes to maintain or improve, rather than change, their initial attributions. With such alarming divorce rates, it is quite obvious that romantic couples are detecting change in their perceptions of one another. However, romance and attribution research has not been able to fully explain how detection of perception change occurs in romantic relationships. More specifically, traditional linear theories of attribution are not able to clarify how dramatic dispositional change can occur in romantic relationships. Results from an experiment lead us to believe that the detection of dispositional change in romantic relationships is actually quite dynamic, counter to current beliefs in the field. In addition, the Discounting Principle may be used in non-traditional ways.

Show moreThe security of wireless networks has gained considerable importance due to the rapid proliferation of wireless communications. While computer network heuristics and rules are being used to control and monitor the security of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), mining and learning behaviors of network users can provide a deeper level of security analysis. The objective and contribution of this thesis is three fold: exploring the security vulnerabilities of the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless networks; extracting features or metrics, from a security point of view, for modeling network traffic in a WLAN; and proposing a data mining-based approach to intrusion detection in WLANs. A clustering- and expert-based approach to intrusion detection in a wireless network is presented in this thesis. The case study data is obtained from a real-word WLAN and contains over one million records. Given the clusters of network traffic records, a distance-based heuristic measure is proposed for labeling clusters as either normal or intrusive. The empirical results demonstrate the promise of the proposed approach, laying the groundwork for a clustering-based framework for intrusion detection in computer networks.

As expected, relative to participants in earlier studies, the current participants reported fewer experiences of mate poaching. In Study B, I investigated the likelihood that the benefits and costs of mate poaching will, respectively, motivate participants to poach or will deter them from doing so. Results indicated that for males and females to be motivated to poach, the attached individual must be more attractive than the unattached individual.
