Show moreAs Bertrand Russel once said, “The true spirit of delight, the exaltation, the sense of being more than man, which is the touchstone of the highest excellence, is to be found in mathematics as surely as poetry” (Russel 60). Poetry and mathematics are recognizably linked through aesthetics and counting at the most fundamental level, but these basic connections can be further extended to formal constraints in poetry. The link between mathematics and poetry, as well as formal poetic constraint based on mathematical structures and principles is inherently organic. The sestina and the sonnet are traditional poetic forms that contain intrinsic mathematical structures. The Fib, the S+7 algorithm, and computer-generated poetry are modern forms which have been explicitly based on mathematical structures.

The uniquely Romantic idea of organicism was defined by Samuel Taylor Coleridge as “unity in multeity” (Theory of Life, 42), which was the aesthetic ideal many poets strove to meet. I will explore how certain works in the Romantic era exemplify various aspects of organic theory, specifically: The Sensitive Plant, by P. B. Shelley, describes a personified organic force; The Botanic Gardens, by Erasmus Darwin, demonstrates how natural philosophers came to view the organization of life as a network, rather than a taxonomic hierarchy; and the ode encapsulates the organic ideal of synthesis. Understanding organic theory helps us to understand the ideal that the Romantics aspired to meet.

Cassiopea sp. are epibenthic jellyfish found in significantly higher densities and larger in size in areas that have high human populations. This study quantified the spatial and class-size distribution of Cassiopea xamachana in the Loxahatchee River, in an area referred to as Jellyfish Bay, by analyzing bell diameters and abundance, percent of submerged aquatic vegetation, and nutrient levels to determine if anthropogenic factors play a role in their presence there. Porewater samples from the bay had higher phosphorous levels compared to the rest of the river. This was indicative of wastewater runoff and may also indicate P-limitation. Nitrate levels were slightly lower than the average values and Cassiopea spp. preferentially take up nitrogen for their symbiotic zooxanthellae, so the higher densities of Cassiopea spp. in the embayment could be soaking up that nitrogen.

However, there are some similarities that can be seen between current and ancestral times in relation to societal perception, especially in relation to parental investment theory. Using an OkCupid dataset of 2620 questions, 166 were selected in order to evaluate how much of an influence societal perception ( the influence of family and friends, substance use, education, stigma, religion, appearance, and morals) has on searching for a romantic partner. The data was evaluated in four separate stages: Initially just 100 cases were examined to reduce computational burden, then an additional 2000 were used to look at the structure of key variables. Of the remaining cases, 60% were used to develop a prediction model and 40% to test this model. It was found that women tended to be more selective on six of the seven scales that were measured, this selectiveness can be attributed to parental investment theory. significant influence in revolutionary politics through agricultural and industrial collectivization, communes, militia resistance, and participation in government. Many historians have explained anarchism through the lens of ideology, a doctrine based upon a structure of authority. This thesis, however, explains anarchist power and unity during the Spanish Civil War as a matter of identity, as a meaningful sense of self. Spanish anarchists defined themselves through the process of negation – the act of defining who you are by defining what you are not – by their opposition to authority, to religion, to feudalism, to capitalism and fascism, to communism, and to anarchism. Interactive fiction, which is any text-based media that the reader can alter through their actions (Montfort, “Twisty Little Passages”, vii), addresses this configurative authorship. “Countdown” is my own work of interactive fiction. It is an interpersonal drama that meditates on inevitability and the effects of our choices. It employs randomization at a high level that impacts which scenes of the story are seen and when, and this complicates the relationship between the configurative author and the creator. This approach can be applied to other projects to place the reader in productive tension with the story itself, the author, and/or the narrator.

Show moreThe purpose of this research is to create a visual representation of the relationships and interactions between the fields of personality, industrial/organizational, and human factors psychology. References were pulled from select chapters of two different handbooks, the forthcoming SAGE Handbook of Personality and Individual Differences and the Oxford Handbook of Organizational Psychology, in order to create a network structure that graphically illustrated the connections between the authors and their specific topics. This structure was then compared to a pre-prepared network that was created by hand of the expectations for what the network should look like based solely on the chapter readings. The software programs of R and Gephi were used for the creation of these network structures. From this research, the importance of these methods, namely, the creation a detailed map of a scientific field, was deduced and expanded upon.

Although little is known about the genetic and neuronal mechanisms underlying the evolution of behavior, studying the brain may be useful in addressing this. The Mexican Cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus, is a species with populations that inhabit surface rivers as well as caves. A. mexicanus populations are excellent models for convergent and parallel evolution. Using morphometric analysis software, we investigated the differences in brain morphology between the two morphs. The cave populations exhibit a smaller optic tectum volume, which is consistent with their loss of eyes, a larger hypothalamus, and an increased size of the olfactory bulb volume. Each of these regions have known roles in different behaviors, which differ between cave and surface fish. These findings provide insight into how evolution can affect behavior by changing neuroanatomical structure.

I defend this claim via the examination of examples of entrepreneurs and members of the health and science communities, and the services they provide to the public. I show that products and services must have fitting marketing strategies, because if something innovative is developed but is not marketed, it is as if the invention was constructed only in the imagination of the creator.

Show moreReactive oxygen species (ROS) have traditionally been viewed as a harmful consequence of oxygen metabolism. However, scientists have discovered that ROS may oxidize cysteine residues of proteins, yielding sulfenic acid residues. This redox-mediated post-translational modification plays a significant biological role in cellular signaling, growth, and homeostasis. These processes were difficult to monitor in the past due to the lack of methods which can efficiently detect the changing redox states of cysteine residues. However, even with the advent of small molecule probes which selectively bind to oxidized cysteine residues, there is still work to be done in designing a more efficient probe, particularly for the sulfenic acid oxoform. Additionally, a probe that can characteristically fluoresce upon reacting with sulfenic acids would be extremely useful in biological imaging. Herein I describe a selective, reactive, and fluorogenic probe which can be used to detect protein sulfenylation.

This study compared the zooxanthellae density and chlorophyll concentrations of Montastreaea cavernosa colonies in Flower Garden Banks from mesophotic, shallow, and transplant depth treatments testing their differences over bank location, treatment, and time through a transplant experiment. It also compared the percent of zooxanthellae cells remaining after a bleaching event. Time was the driving factor for the differences in the algal symbiont concentrations. Zooxanthellae and chlorophyll were reduced after the bleaching event. However, there was no significant difference between the symbiont densities and chlorophyll concentrations between the transplant and shallow samples, demonstrating that they bleached equally. The lack of difference provides evidence for the plasticity and adaptability of coral and gives hope for the future of shallow reefs since mesophotic corals may be able to adapt to the thermal stresses of shallow reefs.

In this thesis I begin by introducing the Big Bang theory and discussing arguments for and against it. Huwe1 has been shown to be associated with intellectual disability. Through the use of electrophysiology and cell specific rescue it has been shown that EEL-1 is involved in GABAergic synaptic transmission. The mechanism of action of EEL-1 within GABA neurons remains largely unknown. Affinity purification proteomics have identified OGT-1, an ortholog of mammalian O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) transferase (Ogt), as an EEL-1 binding protein. By analyzing the expression pattern of OGT-1 in transgenic animals, we show that OGT-1 is expressed both GABAergic motor neurons and cholinergic motor neurons. Analysis of the subcellular distribution within GABAergic motor neurons shows that OGT-1 is enriched in presynaptic terminals. These findings support the hypothesis that EEL-1 and OGT-1 form a complex within GABA motor neurons to regulate synaptic transmission.

Thus, finding ways to uncouple chronical aging with risk of disease is imperative. Extensive evidence links aging with increased oxidative stress. The free radical theory of aging posits that reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase with age and cause oxidative damage to cellular components, thereby driving aging. In support of this, overexpressing the endogenous antioxidant catalase specifically in mitochondria (mCAT transgene) improves health and lifespan of mice. I hypothesized that if ROS is a root cause of aging then the mCAT transgene would slow aging in a murine model of a human progeroid syndrome (Ercc1-/Δ mice). Unfortunately, mCAT expression was not highly expressed in all tissues. Nevertheless, mCAT+/-;Ercc1-/Δ mice showed improvements in functional tests and health evaluations relative to Ercc1-/Δ mice supporting the conclusion that ROS plays an important causal role in aging. matching, pre-transplant assessments and allocation of organs. In addition, I will discuss ethical principles that can be used to aid transplant teams in the difficult task of allocating of organs. I will also evaluate alternative options to the current transplant process such as an opt-out vs. an opt-in system and controlled financial payment for organs. Finally, I will analyze current policies regarding living donors and suggest avenues for future research into alternative resources for organs.

The hypothesis is that higher BNP readings will result in a shorter amount of time that the patient has to live. 210 patients with a heart condition were admitted to the Hospice of Palm Beach County and had their blood drawn to determine their BNP level; however, only 35 patients qualified for the final analysis. The 35 patients had BNP readings ranging from 63 pg/ml to 50000 pg/ml with the average being 6620 pg/ml, whereas the normal range is <100 pg/ml. The time between the last BNP reading and the date of death ranged from 1 day to 732 days with the average being 118 days; furthermore, the trend indicated that the higher the BNP level the shorter the patient had to live which agrees with the hypothesis.

In the West, men and women are compared in a hierarchical gender dualism that claims men to be the cultivators of culture while women are the uncivilized yet passive and receptive fertile beings that are linked closely with the earth. Using theories from anthropology and ecofeminism, I show that the association of women with nature and fertility has led to their exploitation around the globe. Furthermore, racism played a role in the type of population control used on groups of women. I trace the use of Depo-Provera, Norplant, sterilization and even birth control pills in the population control policies pushed by Western politicians. I argue that these policies can be traced back to the eugenics movement and the association of women with untamed nature in need of male civilizing.

Abstract/Description

During the 16th century, Spaniards of Muslim heritage, known as Moriscos, were forced to convert to Christianity. Show moreDuring the 16th century, Spaniards of Muslim heritage, known as Moriscos, were forced to convert to Christianity. As Spanish speakers wishing to preserve their Muslim culture, the Moriscos began to write in Spanish using Arabic script. This writing system, known as Aljamiado, manifests as a distinct new language with its own grammatical idiosyncrasies. This thesis focuses on a 16th century aljamiado manuscript – a religious text containing “teachings of much importance” – and the significance of such teachings from the Morisco perspective. The text emphasizes the rejection of transient worldly phenomena, which lead to suffering, and the importance of servitude to the divine Creator, which leads to peace. This thesis seeks to explain how this type of religious ideology might inspire harmony or adversity depending on the state of the shifting power structures that define a society. Following an analysis of the text, the author includes his edition of the manuscript.

A 30 second time limit was set for each image to test the speed of each participant, and find out whether participants with or without color blindness could find the hidden animal faster. Art surveys were also given in order to find out the...
