Cyclic wet and dry exposure of specimens in 15% NaCl solution was conducted. Half-cell potential measurements showed that the corrosion probability of specimens with as-received and pre-rusted surfaces was lower than that of specimens with a polished surface. However, the PR and galvanic current tests indicated higher corrosion rate for specimens prepared with atmospherically rusted and as-received steels. Good agreement was found between results of the polarization resistance test and galvanic current measurements. There is a lack of correlation between half-cell potential and corrosion rate.

Show moreThrough content and textual analysis, the thesis compares coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the BBC World News and CNN Headline News online services in terms of source selection patterns and framing. The study concluded that both the publicly owned BBC and its commercial counterpart, CNN, perpetuated hegemony by limiting the range of opinions and ideas regarding the conflict. Although both news organizations showed signs of being independent from their respective governments' official perspectives regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, they indirectly assisted in maintaining the status quo, U.S. hegemony, by narrowing the news source list and focusing on the more sensationalistic aspects of the conflict. In so doing, they deflected attention away from important issues of historical and political significance that, if told, would offer a different and more illuminating interpretation of events.

Show moreIn certain applications, one needs to control physical plants that operate in hazardous conditions. In such situations, it is necessary to acquire access to the controller from a different (remote) location through data communication networks, in order to interconnect the remote location and the controller. The use of such network linking between the plant and the controller may introduce network delays, which would affect adversely the performance of the process control. The main theoretical contribution of this thesis is to answer the following question: How large can a network delay be tolerated such that the delayed closed-loop system is locally asymptotically stable? An explicit time-independent bound for the delay is derived. In addition, various practical realizations for the remote control tasks are presented, utilizing a set of predefined classes for serial communication, data-acquisition modules and stream-based sockets. Due to the presence of a network, implementing an efficient control scheme is a not trivial problem. Hence, two practical frameworks for Internet-based control are illustrated in this thesis. Related implementation issues are addressed in detail. Examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal approach.

Show moreThe interrelatedness of archaeology, geography, and environment, in conjunction with the utilization of modern technology has become evident. This thesis employs the main principles of Environmental Archaeology while utilizing Geographic Information System technology to analyze the distribution of Paleoindian and Archaic period sites in south Florida. The following research demonstrates populations preferred certain areas to others, and environment played a considerable role in this preference, as indicated by the patterns that arose when site locations were analyzed based on environmental variables. These patterns in site locations were used to determine the most likely and least likely areas of south Florida for finding new archaeological sites. This thesis also provides an evaluation of the varions environmental and archaeological data sets used, concluding that paleoenvironmental reconstruction is a worthwhile goal, greatly enhancing modern environmental data sets used in this study.

These were divided in two groups, the first to simulate the state of stress inside the tendon ducts and the second to compare the properties of new materials approved according to new regulations on the subject and those used in the construction of the structures. A proposed mechanism of cracking was studied and its validity verified. According to simulations performed on specimens that were fabricated and others developed by the finite element method, new major factors were found to explain the duct failure. Finally, a comparison of mechanical properties indicated a difference between virgin and aged materials.

Show moreTo improve our understanding of loggerhead life history, particularly factors affecting the duration of each age class and survivorship, detailed growth data must be interpreted. The purpose of this study was to investigate how temporal and spatial nest origin influence initial hatchling size and growth potential. Seasonal environmental fluctuations and maternal resource allocation could result in differential hatchling size and development. Hatchlings from ten sites from North Carolina to Florida representing 2 subpopulations were sampled during 3 phases of the season. The largest (WT, SCL and SCW) hatchlings came from the northernmost site with initial size decreasing as latitude decreased. Turtles deposited during the earliest phase of the nesting season grew faster than those from later phases of the season. Differences in initial size and growth potential could influence early stage survivorship as a function of size-based predation, and may imply the need for separate consideration when constructing population models.

Since few prior studies have been directed at Poe's homosexual content, this thesis gives special attention to the benchmark criticism by D. H. Lawrence, which has long influenced readers' interpretations of sexual relationships in Poe's stories. This inquiry includes gender studies, especially the work of Leland S. Person, as well as queer theorist commentary on Poe and his contemporaries. It also deliberates on the definition of the queer aesthete provided by Alexander Doty and discusses how Poe's characters actually pre-date some assumptions about early appearances of the homosexual male in literature. Additionally, this thesis considers how writers who have been influenced by Poe tend to write texts that routinely provide fertile ground for the queer theorist.

These areas have been the sites of recurrent phytoplankton blooms and this study was aimed at exploring similar effects within the microalgal epiphytic communities. Epiphytometers, or surrogate seagrass, were used to provide a time zero (T0) point which is impossible in natural samples. Epiphyte samples were analyzed using HPLC/PDA which provided measurements of standing crop and community structure (>90% diatom). Epiphytometers were found to be excellent tool for monitoring epiphyte productivity on Thalassia. The monitoring of productivity, standing crop and community structure should allow insight into positive and negative effects of water supply changes.

Several analysis and reduction techniques were proposed for reducing these effects on signal integrity. This work solves the misconception by encompassing different problems Chat effect signal integrity and can be good reference for a integrated circuit designer. The objective is to analyze these modeling methods, reduction techniques, tools and make recommendations that aids in developing a methodology for perfect design closure with an emphasis on signal integrity. These recommendations would form a basis for developing a methodology to analyze interference effects at higher levels of abstraction.

Show moreTechnological advances are providing us with the capability to integrate more and more functionality into a single chip. This is leading to a new design paradigm, System On a Chip (SoC). SoC design brings with it new challenges and difficulties. Managing these challenges and complexity necessitate modeling of systems at a hierarchy of abstraction levels starting from System Level down to Register Transfer Level. Using a single language across all these levels would ensure that the models are consistent and error-free. SystemC is one such language that has the infrastructure for specifying the design at System level, Behavioral level and RT levels of abstraction. This thesis showcases the same using two design examples---Simplex Data Protocol and General Purpose Timer (GPT) peripheral. Coding style and level of detailing at different levels are shows. Process of refining from one level to another is illustrated. GPT peripheral module designed in this thesis work can be further reused as a timer library component in system architectures.

Contrary to these perceptions, Teckno culture is a collage of meanings. Long-term participation in Teckno culture has resulted in the development of new hybridized belief systems for many of the participants. Hybridization occurs as a result of exposure to multiple religious and mystic beliefs while in altered states of consciousness. This thesis explores the characteristics of these hybrids and identifies the seven elements that create and maintain the unique rave atmosphere in which this process is occurring. Further, the social impact of this culture is explored. In particular, the widespread unity in acceptante of diversity (UAD) arts to break down prejudice and is sustained outside Teckno culture as a lasting change in attitude and worldview.

Show moreThe purpose of the thesis is to determine and compare the performance characteristics of marine piles corroded by chloride diffusion and repaired by several different methods for both uncracked and cracked concrete and to determine their structural integrity. The long-term objective is the comparison of the analytical values with those from an on-going experimental evaluation. The time for chloride concentration reach the threshold value that initiates corrosion in the reinforcement has been determined by Fick's law, extended to 2-D and 3-D chloride diffusion, for (a) uncracked concrete, and (b) for cracked concrete with the Simplified Smeared Approach (SSA). The structural integrity of the concrete circular pile is compared before and alter repair, by (a) finite element modeling using ANSYS software with the maximum deflection, and (b) beam strength analysis to find the moment capacity for cracked and ultimate conditions. The overall findings indicate the adequacy of the repair procedures.

Ticket-based probing scheme (TBP) is a creative approach to solve QoS routing problem, however, its proactive nature makes it deficient and unscalable. In this thesis, we first present the adaptive ticket-based routing protocol (ATBR), a proactive protocol enhanced from TBP, by introducing a new imprecise QoS state model. We then present the location-aided, ticket-based routing protocol (LTBR), an integration of locate-based routing and ticket-based routing, where tickets are dynamically generated and guided by location and QoS metric. Our simulations show that, in networks under any density, LTBR achieves close performances to flooding with considerably lower routing overhead.

The six survey missions were preformed over an 8-month period of March 2002 to October 2002. The data collected confirms observations made by previous theoretical studies, which used dynamical models of the Florida Current. The overall picture is of a turbulent cyclonic front with strong vertical shearing and vertical mixing. In addition, the data suggest internal wave generation and intermittent episodes of upwelling that appear to be related to the position of the current and the steepness of the front.

Show moreMany critical studies of Colette, drawing heavily on psychoanalytic theory in order to explicate the biographical particulars of her life which are present in her works, have sought to brand the writer as feminine archetype of the free-spirited and inconstant libertine of the early twentieth century. But while such studies often note the general importance of the theme of love in Colette's works, they have tended to ignore both the larger literary metamorphosis which the theme of love undergoes and its metonymic links to the act of writing itself. Indeed, in Colette's works the letter and the mirror become privileged symbols through which the love felt by the narrator is channeled and ultimately displaced towards the act of writing and self-apprehension. Paradoxically, the act of writing is what enables Colette's narrator to enact her own liberation, it is also the act of writing in which she encounters isolation.

They have taken their industrial and oppositional discourse about global warming online through campaigns meant to appear motivated by grassroots impulses but which, as in the case of Exxon Mobil, are often motivated by profit. This study combines rhetorical and media studies approaches in performing semiotic analysis of online texts related to global warming. It concludes that corporations and environmentalists are making innovative use of this new medium in communicating their respective ideologies, but that corporate texts reflect signs and strategies that obscure their sources' primary locus on profit and are, consequently, less transparent.

Show moreManatees are aquatic mammals with voracious appetites. They rely on sea grass as the main food source, and often spend up to eight hours a day grazing. They move slow and frequently stay in groups (i.e. aggregations) in shallow water to search for food, making them vulnerable to environment change and other risks. Accurate counting manatee aggregations within a region is not only biologically meaningful in observing their habit, but also crucial for designing safety rules for boaters, divers, etc., as well as scheduling nursing, intervention, and other plans. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based crowd counting approach to automatically count number of manatees within a region, by using low quality images as input. Because manatees have unique shape and they often stay in shallow water in groups, water surface reflection, occlusion, camouflage etc. making it difficult to accurately count manatee numbers. To address the challenges, we propose to use Anisotropic Gaussian Kernel (AGK), with tunable rotation and variances, to ensure that density functions can maximally capture shapes of individual manatees in different aggregations. After that, we apply AGK kernel to different types of deep neural networks primarily designed for crowd counting, including VGG, SANet, Congested Scene Recognition network (CSRNet), MARUNet etc. to learn manatee densities and calculate number of manatees in the scene. By using generic low quality images extracted from surveillance videos, our experiment results and comparison show that AGK kernel based manatee counting achieves minimum Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The proposed method works particularly well for counting manatee aggregations in environments with complex background.
