Show moreRoe vs. Wade, a landmark case in which the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion, has been recently challenged. Although public opinion shows that most Americans oppose overturning Roe, various states have introduced legislation to force the court to reconsider the issue. Drawing on the work of philosopher Mary Anne Warren, I argue that while the fetus is worthy of moral consideration it is not yet worthy of personhood and cannot be granted greater legal rights than the mother; and that Roe as it stands today already provides an appropriate compromise between the two sides of the debate, because it acknowledges a women’s freedom to control her reproduction, but also acknowledges interests the state may have in the life of the fetus, and should not be overturned.

This paper tests the religious economy model for predicting Church behavior which predicts that religious firms will become more politically active on behalf of potential members in areas where competition for those members is most fierce. An analysis of data from a survey of 106 U.S. Catholic dioceses and archdioceses on outreach to Hispanic immigrants does not support this hypothesis. Show moreThis paper tests the religious economy model for predicting Church behavior which predicts that religious firms will become more politically active on behalf of potential members in areas where competition for those members is most fierce. An analysis of data from a survey of 106 U.S. Catholic dioceses and archdioceses on outreach to Hispanic immigrants does not support this hypothesis. Religious competition and Church activism on immigration issues did not correlate. Rather, demand for services (measured as Hispanic presence within each diocese) was a better predictor of Church activism on immigration issues. This finding suggests that the "inelastic demand" assumption of the religious economy model must be dropped, re-opening demand side explanations for Church behavior across national and local contexts.

Subsequent studies have shown that KIF9 interacts with proteins involved in cell shape remodeling, cell migration and proper centrosomal positioning. We have examined KIF9 function in mammalian cells using shRNA-mediated knockdown and GFP-plasmid overexpression. By knocking dow KIF9 expression in these cells, we have seen several effects on normal cell cycle progression. Using various cell cycle markers, we have observed a decrease in the number of cells in late S phase. In addition, there is a marked increase in the number of cells in early mitosis in unexpected time intervals. We propose that KIF9 is required for proper cell progression, via a potentially novel checkpoint mechanism.

Given the importance of these critical periods for neuronal development and the importance of dendritic spines for memory formation the first aim was to examine basolateral amygdala (BLA) spine density in mice postnatal day 16-20 and 28-35. Furthermore, the effect of METH training on BLA dendritic spine density in adolescent animals was also examined. We found that there were no significant differences in the spine density between P16-20 and P28-35 animals. Also, METH training did not significantly impact the dendritic spine density in adolescents. While previous studies showed a significant increase in dendritic spine density after METH training in adults, this initial dataset indicates that there is no significant effect on spine density in adolescents within the BLA.

For my thesis research, I tested whether two species of aquatic snail (one freshwater and one estuarine) show response to chemicals released by a crushed conspecific. I measured behavioral reaction of a freshwater snail and an estuarine snail species. I first tested the species from a freshwater pond, comparing the behavior of snail exposed to crushed snail extract with controls over a period of 24 h. In the first trial, significantly more snails climbed out of the water at the 8-h mark (χ2=8.86, p<.05) and the 24-h mark (χ2=4.98, p<.05). In the second trial, this difference was significant at the 2-h mark (χ2=4.43, p<.05). In one trial with estuarine snails, I found no evidence of an alarm response. The differences in response between the two species may relate to differences in environment. Alarm chemicals may supply useful information on local predation in a pond with little water movement, but not in an estuary, where water flow would quickly disperse these chemicals.

Methods of removing invasive animals include killing individuals, justified as a means of protecting broader ecological values. This management approach, however, is often controversial and highlights differences between discourses of environmental and animal rights. The former values life at a holistic level while the latter emphasizes the value of individual lives. Language both reflects and shapes belief and action, and to assess these divergent views, I compare invasive species rhetoric of a prominent environmental organization with that of an influential animal welfare group. The goal is to identify the most prevalent themes in the different organizations’ characterizations, highlighting areas of convergence and divergence regarding such themes, and, ultimately, to find out if their rhetoric points to any viable suggestions for compromise.

My thesis research evaluated the efficacy of using repeated low doses of microtubule drugs instead of a single high dose, in an attempt to minimize side effects. Using nocodazole and vinblastine, I first established the minimum effective concentration that disrupts the microtubules in normal human cells grown in vitro and treated cells with those concentrations over a period of several days. I found that microtubules were increasingly depolymerized as the days progressed. Next, I tested a combination of nocodazole and vinblastine at low concentrations.

Formal schooling has not met the needs of many Liberian former child soldiers, and consequently alternative education programs and strategies are an essential approach towards reintegration. I analyze educational theory, policy, and case studies in post-conflict countries to recommend the most effective alternative education strategies for reintegrating Liberian former child soldiers and ensuring their further intellectual, social, and economic development. I argue that programs combining community and peer support with professional guidance and apprenticeships have been the most effective in reaching this population. This research will serve as a basis for implementing adult education programs at The Pa’s Hat Academy, a school intended to serve former child soldiers and subsequent generations of males in the West Point area in Monrovia, Liberia.

The most significant flaw, as Fitzgerald demonstrates, is that although a certain level of success is possible, a dreamer is never satisfied. Despite the passage of nine years between the publication of the two novels and the changes the nation underwent between 1925 and 1934, Fitzgerald's opinion is not altered; he remains pessimistic. He concludes in both novels that [the] American dream cannot be attained.

As more becomes known about the condition, it is becoming clear that new treatments need to be developed. Research has shown that cryotherapy, anti-inflammatory drugs, and corticosteroid injections, though widely used, are dated and potentially harmful. Other current treatments include physical therapy, sclerosing and platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, shock wave therapy, and surgery. However, none of these treatments has shown significant effectiveness. Due to a lack of high quality research and intrinsic limitations, it is difficult to make a definitive conclusion as to the single best treatment. Based on limited existing data, it is suspected that the best course of action is likely a combination of treatments, such as employing eccentric exercise, supplemented with PRP.

Recent research has demonstrated that drugs which increase synaptic plasticity possess the capacity to enhance memory. The question that the present study sought to address was whether it is possible that cognition-enhancing drugs might enhance some memories to the detriment of others. Mice of the C57BL/6J inbred strain were trained on the Morris water maze task. They were then transferred over to a second, similar, water maze and trained using either the cognition-enhancing drug apamin or saline injected intraperitoneally. A strong correlation was observed in the apamin mice. The better they learned the second water maze task, the poorer they recalled the solution to the initial water maze. Our findings support the concept that performance-enhancing drugs are a facilitative factor in the memory phenomenon of proactive interference.

Opioids may be prescribed to treat postoperative pain, which poses an ethical dilemma as the prescription of these drugs to recovering addicts can lead to relapse. While addiction can impair one’s ability to make rational decisions, there are cases in which those in recovery are autonomous and are therefore capable of self-determination which should not be denied. This paper aims to assess the concepts of autonomy and drug addiction to propose treatment follow-up options for clinicians and patients which may prevent relapse from occurring in postoperative settings where opioid prescription is indicated for the patient’s well-being. It is argued that opioids can be prescribed to former drug users in an ethical way under specific parameters including the implementation of patient-specific treatment plans.

One of the most novel and widely unexplored fields of reproductive health is oncofertility, a field of medicine that aims to minimize the negative impacts of cancer treatment on fertility. For many childhood cancer patients, cancer treatment involves oncofertility-related discussions that involve their families, physicians, and many other people. This paper serves primarily to evaluate the quality of educational and clinical resources available to childhood cancer patients regarding fertility preservation, the current approach to these cases from an ethical perspective, and to propose a procedure for treatment plan development and decision making that carefully considers the values and beliefs of the patient, his/her family members, physicians, and ethics board members involved with the case to help standardize the process.
