Show moreMetal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are a unique class of materials in which metal clusters are linked together by organic moieties forming porous 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D structures. MOFs have many applications resulting from not only the overall structure, but also the metal center, organic “linker”, or a combination thereof. The high surface areas and porosity of these materials have found use in heterogeneous catalysis, display technologies, semiconducting materials, and biomedicine. These materials are also currently being developed as a new sensor technology for detection of potentially harmful chemicals. Nitroaromatics are key components in the fabrication of explosives, however, current detection methods are time consuming and expensive. Considering this, our interest lies in synthesizing MOFs that can be used as a sensor for nitroaromatic compounds. To this end, our lab has developed a new Er(III) MOF based on the linker 2-2’-bithiophene-5,5’-dicarboxylic acid (DTDC). Herein, synthesis and nitroaromatic sensing studies will be discussed.

Show moreIn order to keep up with the high demand for biologically active molecules, chemists devised several synthetic strategies to access novel chemical spaces. The two main strategies to construct new scaffolds are to revisit underexploited or forgotten reactions or to devise new transformations. We are exploring a unique and underexploited reaction, the Himbert–Henn cycloaddition, to produce complex molecular scaffolds in a single step (strategy 1). In a second novel approach, we are modifying the Hantzsch 4-component reaction (4CR) by incorporating an α-amino ester residue to construct new molecules (strategy 2). Both of these reactions have great potential to synthesize novel and chiral molecules from proteinogenic α-amino esters. These unprecedented and complex polycyclic molecules have potential application in medicinal chemistry and natural product synthesis. 4-aza-podophyllotoxins obtained by the Hantzsch-4CR have been proven to be potent as anti-leukemia, anti-colon cancer, and vascular disrupting agents (with nanomolar activity).

Podophyllotoxin has been under extensive biochemical investigation since the discovery of its biological activity as a strong microtubule destabilizing mitotic agent. Although these antineoplastic compounds have shown significant activity as cancerous cell growth inhibitors, they lack selectivity and are thus extremely toxic to healthy cells. This has led to a recent interest in the synthesis of Podophyllotoxin analogues in hopes of optimizing the biological selectivity and potency of these semi-synthetic derivatives. The objective of my research in the Roche group is to generate a library of these derivatives for subsequent biological assays to determine their potential as chemotherapeutic agents. In total I have synthesized 22 Podophyllotoxin analogues. Of these 22 derivatives, 14 have been biologically evaluated and 4 were observed to possess promising anti-cancer activity and are currently undergoing further evaluation.

This project's objective is to repurpose the decommissioned mailboxes into The Official Shredding System (TOSS). TOSS will be a publicly accessible shredding service located at official USPS locations to ensure security. TOSS will allow people to destroy sensitive documents and mail with personal information in a secure setting. The shredded documents will ultimately be recycled through the current USPS recycling system. The goal and research of the project is to demonstrate how interdisciplinary studies of graphic design and engineering can work together to address and solve social problems. It was observed that after a 30-minute math lesson, the students were expected to take an assessment based on the content of the lesson. It seemed as if students were having a difficult time focusing on the test and were getting wiggly in their seats. The students seemed nervous to take a test directly after instruction and some of the scores were not as high as intended. This was the basis behind conducting this research. There had to be a solution to this problem and the researcher was determined to find one.

This right was granted to all religious organizations with the expectation that they would contribute to their communities by providing aid to the poor. Through their constant reformation, tax laws have achieved a more rigorous stance on religious tax exemptions, yet lack the integrity needed to prevent religious organizations from taking advantage of the current tax laws. The objective of this project is to analyze how the church went from being humble, to a corporation that exploits the current tax exemptions law, and how we need reconstruct the current tax exemptions on religious organization.

A quarter century after the dissolution of the USSR and her satellite states, only eight of twenty-eight transitioning states have been able to fully democratize. Several of these anocratic states are today characterized by routine human rights violations, state repressions of civil society, and incarcerations of political opposition. There is limited cohesive research on how the Post-Communist formation of oligarchs across Eurasia and increases in democratic transitioning period have influenced democratization. In this study, I research, test, and explain the effects of Post-Communist oligarchies and the periods of democratic transitions on current levels of democratic consolidation in twenty-eight former socialist states through publicly available statistics and primary sources. I find that while oligarchical influence on democratization is limited, shorter democratic transitions produce significantly higher levels of democratic consolidation than their prolonged counterparts.

Parvalbumin-containing (PV+) interneurons, a subtype of GABAergic interneurons, play an important role in cortical circuit function; however, it remains unknown how visual experience shapes their organization. We used immunohistochemistry to observe the organization of PV+ expression in visual cortex through visual maturity. Before visual experience, PV+ cell bodies and processes are most pronounced in layer 5, less in layer 2/3, and generally lacking in layer 4. Within 3 days of the onset of visual experience, PV+ organization undergoes a major shift, with PV+ expression found throughout layers 2-6. We performed dark rearing which determined these morphological changes are due to visual experience. This rapid change in parvalbumin organization may play a role in functional changes associated with the onset of visual experience.

In this study we tested Long Evan rats using a T-maze. For each trial the rats were required to alternate between the left and right goal arms with a delay period in between randomized intervals of 30s, 60s, or 120s. After two consecutive testing days of 80% the rats were infused with muscimol procaine, and saline. We expect that the effect of reversible inactivation of RE will demonstrate a significant decline in performance of the task.
