The interest over primes does not stop at x² + 3y², although this form by itself is a complex way of analyzing simple primes. Yet with this surge comes a conflict : the civil rights of gays and lesbians against the rights of religious individuals, predominantly Christians, refusing to tolerate a behavior they think immoral. My thesis focuses on two hypothetical situations : a county clerk refusing to issue a marriage license to an engaged lesbian couple and an inn owner refusing a night's stay to a gay couple. Show moreThe surge in granting equal rights to gays and lesbians in the United States is remarkable. Yet with this surge comes a conflict : the civil rights of gays and lesbians against the rights of religious individuals, predominantly Christians, refusing to tolerate a behavior they think immoral. My thesis focuses on two hypothetical situations : a county clerk refusing to issue a marriage license to an engaged lesbian couple and an inn owner refusing a night's stay to a gay couple. In both cases, the clerk and inn owner refuse service for religious reasons. Normatively, I argue that we must move beyond a framework of toleration to a system of equal respect and understanding of our fellow human beings. Legally, I argue that the rights of religious expression and exercise should not trump the civil rights of gays and lesbians in the public sphere.

Parazen pacificus (Zeiformes, Parazenidae) is a benthopelagic fish found at depths of 146-600 m in the western Pacific, Indian, Caribbean, and western Atlantic Oceans. This ray-finned fish has a silvery elongate compressiform body with magenta coloring along its dorsal side. My thesis examines three juvenile specimens of Parazen pacificus to provide the first description and illustration of the juvenile stage of this species.

A survey was conducted in 2008 by Tiffany Snow, sampling the species of fishes in the area. The goal of this study is to act as a 10 year follow up to the research done in 2008. A survey was conducted in 2008 by Tiffany Snow, sampling the species of fishes in the area. The goal of this study is to act as a 10 year follow up to the research done in 2008. A lot can be learned from comparing the data of native and exotic fish species in the area over a 10 year span. The flora and plant growth around the Greenway has changed quite drastically in that time. The sampling was conducted between December of 2018 and April of 2019, when a total of 14 species had been identified. Five of these species have been classified as exotic, and nine as naturally occurring in Florida.

Prior to 2000, very little was known about fish biodiversity on the New England Seamount chain. In late 2000, 115 fish species were found on Bear Seamount by the NOAA R/V "Delaware II." Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducted two cruises to explore the New England Seamount chain in 2003. Show morePrior to 2000, very little was known about fish biodiversity on the New England Seamount chain. In late 2000, 115 fish species were found on Bear Seamount by the NOAA R/V "Delaware II." Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution conducted two cruises to explore the New England Seamount chain in 2003. This study assessed fish species throughout Alvin submersible dives during these 2003 cruises. Digital video footage was converted to still photographs and video clips using the Macintosh movie program iMovie. Fishes were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level using keys and literature. The habitat, depth and behavior of observed fishes were compared to the literature available. Geographical distributions of the species were considered. I assessed substrate preference by building a chart that reflects the different sediment regimes that fishes were found on. In all I identified 317 individuals representing 33 different taxa, including two species with new habitat range information Neocyttus helgae and Lepidion sp.

In 1919, the Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov declared a "death sentence" on fictional films. Vertov championed his own unique method of non-fiction filmmaking, called Kino-Eye, which is based on Vertov's ideas regarding truth in cinema. Although he does not write specifically about Vertov or film, the philosopher Nelson Goodman offers a contrasting view of truth in general. A floral inventory was conducted using stratified sampling of macro plots to determine changes in biodiversity, nonnative species ratios, and wetland species ratios compared to a similar 1990 study. It was found that the site was 25.56% less biodiverse and contained 18.47% more nonnative species in the past...

A floral inventory was conducted using stratified sampling of macro plots to determine changes in biodiversity, nonnative species ratios, and wetland species ratios compared to a similar 1990 study. It was found that the site was 25.56% less biodiverse and contained 18.47% more nonnative species in the past thirty years. The percentage of wetland species found decreased 32.80% and upland species have increased by 19.86% in the same time period. These results are consistent with ecological trends found in natural sites in South Florida, a result of human alteration of the land in the past century.

Earlier floral inventories of this site listed 477 plant species. For my thesis, I surveyed plants in Frenchman’s Forest and compiled a list of plant species documented in Frenchman’s Forest in 2022-2023 based on photographs posted to the iNaturalist website. Earlier floral inventories of this site listed 477 plant species. For my thesis, I surveyed plants in Frenchman’s Forest and compiled a list of plant species documented in Frenchman’s Forest in 2022-2023 based on photographs posted to the iNaturalist website. I found that most of the plant species I documented, a total of 179 plant species, include 37 native and eight non-native species not previously listed. These eight non-native species are described further in detail on their invasive status and how they made their way into the preserve.

There is little ecological information known for this species, making conservation work difficult in protecting it. What we do know, however, is that they are large, insectivorous, high-flying mammals that can travel over vast distances in a single night. With these characteristics it made me wonder if E. floridanus would find baseball stadiums an acceptable hunting ground. They have wide-open spaces, the bright stadium lights attract insects, and the field lights themselves are hundreds of feet high. To test if this is true, I set up ultrasonic recording equipment at Roger Dean Stadium (and two other baseball fields with differing environmental factors) to see if there is a difference in activity between nights when the lights are on or off. With this information about E. floridanus feeding habits, current conservation practices could be improved upon.

Show moreEach June, surveys are conducted at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in order to monitor the population status of the Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens), the only avian species endemic to the state of Florida. These birds are limited to the rare oak scrub community, a habitat that is under constant threat due to human development. Florida Scrub-Jays are listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act and all of Florida’s populations are in decline. Jonathan Dickinson State Park organizes surveys that collect vital information about the species to better understand how to conserve the fire-dependent oak scrub that they inhabit. The results of this study indicate that efforts to restore the scrub habitat through prescribed burning have been successful at JDSP since the population of Florida Scrub-Jays has stabilized and the birds have dispersed into new areas of the park.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a disease caused by defects in gene products involved in nucleotide excision repair (NER) and lesion bypass. Individuals with XP are unable to repair DNA damage caused by UV light and thus are extremely sensitive to sunlight. XP is generally diagnosed by measuring unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) in response to UV irradiation of cells. Low levels of UDS indicate a low or nonexistent capacity for NER and leads to diagnosis of XP. This is typically done using...

Individuals with XP are unable to repair DNA damage caused by UV light and thus are extremely sensitive to sunlight. XP is generally diagnosed by measuring unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) in response to UV irradiation of cells. Low levels of UDS indicate a low or nonexistent capacity for NER and leads to diagnosis of XP. This is typically done using autoradiography or a fluorescence assay on adherent fibroblasts collected from the patient. However, these methods are time and energy intensive, taking up to three months for results. My project involves development of an assay that uses fluorescently labelled nucleotides and flow cytometry to measure UDS in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. This assay gives results in 24 hours, allowing for more rapid diagnosis of XP.

These processes were difficult to monitor in the past due to the lack of methods which can efficiently detect the changing redox states of cysteine residues. However, even with the advent of small molecule probes which selectively bind to oxidized cysteine residues, there is still work to be done in designing a more efficient probe, particularly for the sulfenic acid oxoform. Additionally, a probe that can characteristically fluoresce upon reacting with sulfenic acids would be extremely useful in biological imaging. Herein I describe a selective, reactive, and fluorogenic probe which can be used to detect protein sulfenylation.

During the Meiji era (1869-1912) a group of academics known as the National learning school helped create and then institute a civic religion known as State Shinto. This belief system took aspects of the folkway known as Shinto and modified it into a form of nationalism which centered on the figure of the Japanese Emperor. This Thesis examines the applications of State Shinto, how affected the lives of those living in Imperial Japan, and how State Shinto differs from its namesake.

Show moreNational attachment refers to the emotional bond one forms with the abstract conception of a nation, similar to how one might imagine a relationship with a god. Although there is a multidisciplinary literature investigating the effects and antecedents of national attachment, there is a distinct lack of research into patterns of national attachment informed by attachment theory. I review the national attachment literature in order to frame the argument for why national attachment ought to be examined from an attachment theory approach. Then, I conduct a study with 217 American adults exploring the associations between two dimensions of national attachment (anxiety and avoidance) and four psychological constructs conceptually linked with national identity (political ideology, interpersonal attachment, moral concerns, and theory of mind) in order to empirically ascertain how national attachment styles are situated within social and political psychology. A consistent association between nationalism and low anxious attachment was found.

Ninety years ago, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Virginia statute allowing state actors to forcibly sterilize those with hereditary forms of intellectual disability, in Buck v. Bell. Fifteen years later, the Court readdressed the concept of compulsory sterilization in the 1942 case, Skinner v. Oklahoma. Skinner v. Oklahoma failed to overturn Buck v. Bell, and as a result, the Supreme Court left an opening for state actors to forcibly sterilize members of their population....

I consider the history of forced sterilization and the broad spectrum of views present today. In questioning if there’s a right to procreate, this thesis concentrates on various scenarios when compelling state interests are so strong that the infringement of that right may be warranted. If an individual were to waive that right, at what point should the means of coercion be deemed illegitimate?

This paper will not only evaluate the effects of compulsory voting on certain aspects of citizens’ welfare, but also citizens’ overall satisfaction with their life and government. In order to measure each of these elements, I will look at income equality, level of government corruption, and democracy ranking. I will also use the World Values Survey to compare the feelings of citizens towards their life and government in countries with compulsory voting to those of citizens in countries with voluntary voting. I hypothesize that there will not be significant differences between the two electoral systems.

The effect of foreign aid on economic growth is still ambiguous in the economic literature. In this paper, we analyze the effect of foreign aid on economic growth in 79 developing countries from the Latin America Caribbean Region, Africa, and Asia. Using data for the year 2000, we find that foreign aid has an insignificant negative effect on economic growth when we control for other factors.

In some countries, strides have been made to understand and combat barriers that people encounter in recognizing and treating mental health problems. Some other countries have faced difficulties in this, including India. India has encountered particular challenges in the acceptance and expansion of mental health awareness and treatment. One driving factor may be stigma. Stigma has been found to vary in different cultures as it is influenced by the cultural climate of the community. When there are high levels of stigma, there is typically less identification and treatment of mental health concerns. Stigma is vital to understand and combat in the cultural setting. This thesis will explore the role of Indian culture on stigma and its effects on treatment.
