Show moreVision is a critical sense for many species, with the perception of motion being a fundamental aspect. This aspect often provides richer information than static images for understanding the environment. Motion recognition is a relatively simple computation compared to shape recognition. Many creatures can discriminate moving objects quite well while having virtually no capacity for recognizing stationary objects. Traditional methods for collision-free navigation require the reconstruction of a 3D model of the environment before planning an action. These methods face numerous limitations as they are computationally expensive and struggle to scale in unstructured and dynamic environments with a multitude of moving objects. This thesis proposes a more scalable and efficient alternative approach without 3D reconstruction. We focus on visual motion cues, specifically ’visual looming’, the relative expansion of objects on an image sensor. This concept allows for the perception of collision threats and facilitates collision-free navigation in any environment, structured or unstructured, regardless of the vehicle’s movement or the number of moving objects present.

Show moreThis dissertation answers the question of what the proper balance is for victims with respect to the formation of a truth or truth and reconciliation commission that is formed to address the aftermath of an authoritarian regime or armed conflict. A review of the historical operation of entities that have operated in the aftermath of authoritarian regimes and armed conflict is conducted in this dissertation. From the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials to the present day, nations have struggled to try to devise a systematic way to deal with the aftermath of harm caused to victims as a consequence of authoritarian regimes and armed conflict. An examination of the various past truth and reconciliation commissions, the International Criminal Court, and various treaties is here juxtaposed with the Colombian Justice and Peace program implemented a decade ago to bring about peace and reconciliation in Colombia. This dissertation concludes that an entity formed with the purpose of achieving the proper balance for victims of an authoritarian regime or armed conflict, must have a truth-telling component that works in tandem with a specialized court conceived with the objective of operating alongside the commission. Thus, while there is a punitive aspect, the focus is more on the relationship between the events, solutions, and relief provided for victims. An entity with such a focus has various components, including truth-telling and some form of sanction or punishment, but always with the betterment of the past, present, and future victims as well as the subject society or country as its priority. In that vein, a set of proposed flexible guidelines are presented as the culmination of this dissertation. The flexible guidelines proposed here set forth a balanced system between the commission and the court that will provide for both punishment and reconciliation for particular countries and the victims.

Men diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer have a 5-year survival rate of approximately 30%. Men diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer have a 5-year survival rate of approximately 30%. Goals of this study were to produce a combination of compounds that are effective against the disease with minimal side effects on normal cells, especially those of the immune system. This study showed KBU2046 in combination with calcitriol, limit proliferation, inhibit migration, and are cytotoxic in a testosterone dependent human prostate cancer cell line. Organic compounds, ellagic acid and curcumin were tested alone and in combination with either calcitriol or KBU2046. No combinations were as effective as KBU2046 and calcitriol in inhibiting migration and proliferation of LNCaP cells. The findings of this study support further investigation into therapeutic use of a combination of KBU2046 and calcitriol in prevention and remission of human prostate cancer.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the influence of the Planning Target volume dose uniformity on the surrounding critical organs (OAR). Ten cases of anonymized patients’ data were selected for our study including: Breast cancer, Brain cancer, Head and Neck cancer, Lung and Prostate calculations of Conformity indices, Biological Effective Doses (BED), Tumor Control Probability (TCP) and Normal Tissue Complication Probability (NTCP) were used to calculate the dose distribution in PTV as well as the dose delivered to the surrounding critical organs of each PTV. We assume that the tumors PTVs have homogeneous density as well as the surrounding normal tissue. Conformity indices (CI) for Breast (PTV) are between 1.8 – 1.9, for Brain (PTV) are between 1.6 – 2.0, for Lungs are 1.5 – 1.6, for Prostate are between 0.4 – 0.5, for Head and Neck are 0.3 – 0.4. Dose uniformity in all the PTVs is 1.089 which is a good indication of the quality of treatment delivered to the tumor. TCP is averaging of value of 87.94 and NTCP is 3.4445.

However, there are challenges about security, privacy, and compliance. Building compliant systems is difficult because of the complex nature of regulations and cloud systems. In addition, the lack of complete, precise, vendor neutral, and platform independent software architectures makes compliance even harder. We have attempted to make regulations clearer and more precise with patterns and reference architectures (RAs). We have analyzed regulation policies, identified overlaps, and abstracted them as patterns to build compliant RAs. RAs should be complete, precise, abstract, vendor neutral, platform independent, and with no implementation details; however, their levels of detail and abstraction are still debatable and there is no commonly accepted definition about what an RA should contain. Existing approaches to build RAs lack structured templates and systematic procedures. In addition, most approaches do not take full advantage of patterns and best practices that promote architectural quality. We have developed a five-step approach by analyzing features from available approaches but refined and combined them in a new way. We consider an RA as a big compound pattern that can improve the quality of the concrete architectures derived from it and from which we can derive more specialized RAs for cloud systems. We have built an RA for HIPAA, a compliance RA (CRA), and a specialized compliance and security RA (CSRA) for cloud systems. These RAs take advantage of patterns and best practices that promote software quality. We evaluated the architecture by creating profiles. The proposed approach can be used to build RAs from scratch or to build new RAs by abstracting real RAs for a given context. We have also described an RA itself as a compound pattern by using a modified POSA template. Finally, we have built a concrete deployment and availability architecture derived from CSRA that can be used as a foundation to build compliance systems in the cloud.

Show moreEnemy relationships play an important role in shaping identity, adjustment, and group cohesion. However, little is known about the causes of enemy relationships. The current study identified the role of individual and dyadic attributes in the formation of new mutual antipathies in primary and middle school children (N=372). Participants completed identical surveys at three time points during a single school year. Self-reports described children’s conduct problems and emotional problems. Peer nominations measured children’s popularity, academic achievement, athleticism, and acceptance. The results indicated that enemy formation was driven by undesirable traits at both the individual and dyadic levels. At the individual level, lower academic achievement and higher conduct problems increased the odds of enemy formation. At the dyadic level, similarities between peers on conduct problems and emotional problems increased the odds of enemy formation. The findings, together with previous studies on the consequences of participation in enemy relationships, suggest that problems from enemy relationships contribute to the formation of new enemy relationships.

The purpose of the experimental results presented here is to check the theoretical analyses, as part of an ongoing investigation into three dimensional propagation in the ocean environment, and to investigate further the propagation characteristics of this type. It has been found that for downslope propagation, the spatial characteristics of the field in a direction parallel to the shore line are in good agreement with the theoretical solution and the azimuthal extent of the beam depends on the wedge angle and frequency.

Show moreA measurement method for the equivalent noise source height of an arbitrary distribution of moving noise sources is developed to investigate the highway vehicle equivalent source heights which are currently used by the FHWA for noise barrier design. The study is intended to provide information required to improve this noise barrier design code. The equivalent point source position is defined for an arbitrary distribution of acoustic sources above a reflecting plane and a method for its measurement using a microphone array is developed. The normalized errors of the measured equivalent source heights are defined including the effects of background noise, the geometric near field, source size, and source directionality. Normalized errors of the measured source heights obtained by a numerical simulation for each parameter lead to optimization of the microphone spacing and to the design of an array of microphones which give the equivalent source height as a function of frequency. The method is then applied to the measurement of the equivalent source height of stationary loudspeakers and is shown to give results which are consistent with theoretical predictions. The effect of the Doppler frequency shift of moving vehicles is investigated using a loudspeaker mounted on the roof of a moving car. If the speed of a moving noise source is less than 97 kph, the error due to the Doppler frequency shift was found to be negligible. Results of measurement on highway vehicles show that the noise source heights for heavy trucks and for automobiles are different from those used currently by the FHWA.

A simulator for the Ridge 32 was implemented in PASCAL as a way of measuring those parameters.
