Show moreEducational leadership goes beyond the boundaries of the classroom; skills needed for talent development professionals in business closely align with those needed in traditional educational leadership positions as both are responsible for the development and growth of others. Traditionally, the role of professional membership associations or organizations such as the Association for Talent Development (ATD, formerly known as the American Society for Training and Development), the group dedicated to individuals in the field of workplace learning and development, is to provide learning opportunities, set standards, identify best practices in their respective fields, and allow members to network with other professionals who share their interests. However, with the rampant increase in the use of technology and social networking, individuals are now able to access a vast majority of information for free online via tools such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Google, and YouTube. Where has this left organizations that typically charged for access to this type of information in the past? Surveys and interviews were conducted with ATD members in this mixed-methods study to answer the following research questions: 1. What are the perceptions of Association for Talent Development (ATD) members regarding the effect of technology-based informal learning on the role of ATD? 2. How do ATD members utilize technology for informal learning? 3. Are there factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, educational level, or length of time in the field that predict a member's likelihood to utilize technology for informal learning? 4. Are there certain ATD competency areas for which informal learning is preferred over non-formal or formal learning? The significance of the study includes the identification of how the Association for Talent Development (ATD, formerly ASTD) can continue to support professionals in our constantly evolving te chnological society as well as advancing the field by contributing research connecting informal learning with technology to membership organization roles.

Show moreThis research was concerned with the perception of inter-element distance and angle relations for pairs of dots arranged vertically, horizontally, oblique-left, and oblique-right. For each trial, a pair of dots was presented in different global locations, for five consecutive frames. The subject's task was to detect a change in the relative location of the dots, which could occur during one of the five frames. Each subject participated in three different conditions. One condition emphasized the detection of changes in distance between the elements; the second emphasized the detection of changes in the angle formed by the elements. The third condition did not focus attention on either distance or angle changes. Results indicated that focussing attention on either distance or angle changes affected sensitivity to distance changes for rectilinear, but not for oblique arrangements. These results suggested that the vertical and horizontal components of Inter-element distance are perceptually fundamental, and that the Euclidean distance between two elements and the angle formed by the elements are internally computed from the perceptually fundamental distance components.

The essays deal with the pair’s childhood, adolescence and adulthood as well as the issues of depression, anxiety and drug addiction. Some pieces are flash-style and others are longer works of lyric essay or general narrative. The pieces can both stand alone and work to create a larger, substantial narrative on how drug addiction affects an entire family, one’s whole world, thus telling a story about how the author must find herself through investigating her brother’s trials and tribulations with addiction.

Show moreThis qualitative interpretive study was designed to understand the perspectives of Black church leaders on their roles in addressing the educational concerns of Black male students. The underlying theoretical framework drew from critical/social justice pedagogy contextualized in the transformative role of Black churches as advocated by scholars. The study investigated the critical reflections and praxis of 13 leaders, who represented three generational eras, which included Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. In a two-phase interview process, participants reflected on their roles in addressing the systems of power and privilege, which impairs the academic performance of Black male students. An analysis of the critical reflections of these leaders re-kindled the potential role of Black churches in social justice advocacy and as sources of empowerment for Black male students in the United States public education system. The study’s findings revealed the Black church leaders’ awareness and articulation of the oppressive conditions within and outside public education, the church leaders’ acceptance of their social justice leadership roles, and an expressed desire to contribute additional actions to address the plight of Black male students. The results distinctively intimated that Black churches are potential sources of empowerment for Black males with space for increasing critical awareness; however, as pivotal organizations within Black communities they are grossly underutilized. For Black male students, Black churches offer different types of capital that may be understated, and Black church leaders as social justice leaders have not optimized their roles by routinely engaging in critical dialogues with their congregation to address the educational concerns of Black males. Recommendations highlighted the need for expanded partnerships with local schools, the initiation of critical dialogues in the church, amongst churches, in the community, and in public education.

Show moreThis qualitative case study investigated the perspectives of higher education leaders and business executive on the funding gap between liberal arts programs and STEM education in a public research level 2 institution in Florida. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore and explain participants’ perspectives and finding ways to narrow the funding gap. Historically, Congress has been open in its allocation of funds to higher education research and, recently, allotted 97% to STEM and Science related disciplines and 3% to non-science fields. At the state level, funding to these two programmatic areas showed a comparable pattern to that of the U.S. Congress with 93% of funds allocated to Engineering and Science, and 7% to non-science disciplines and fields. There were four central research questions to help understand participants’ perspectives of the values of these fields. This study included seven participants who met the following criteria: deans, associate deans, provosts, with at least 10 years of work experience in the position; dean, associate deans, or provosts who retired within the last five years; and a business executive, director or a Chief Operation Officer, with working relations to the university and with similar work experiences. Data were collected primarily from semi-structured interviews, which lasted for 45 minutes per session. Additionally, documents were collected from interview sites. Data were codded and analyzed in two cycles.

The dialogue and actions of Judge Holden and Anton Chigurh hold precedent over the novels, storylines, and other characters so much that I place a greater importance on the philosophies and actionable scenes without emphasis from outside ideals or quasi-religious sects. By looking at dialogue and philosophy, previous comparisons to both works never hold the characteristics of each villain as the centerpiece for discussion. Without the reliance of outside precepts, the Judge and Chigurh function as essential placeholders in their novels. Aspects relating to violence become the result of actions proven by speech. Consequently, the Judge and Chigurh are greater than other villains that I explore in detail with this work. I can only hope this paper sheds light on the significance of both characters.

Seven experiments explore the role of the skeleton in reading focusing on these three questions: (a) do readers assemble the skeleton of printed words? (b) do readers prefer certain frames to others? (c) are skeletal preferences due to grammatical markedness and/or to the statistical properties of the language? Experiments I and 2 showed that in a forcedchoice task, readers favor non-words with unmarked eve and cvcc frames (e.g. , GOM/ TUSP) to non-words with marked VCC frame (e.g., ELM), regardless of segment similarity. Axons must navigate toward target cells, build synaptic connections, and terminate outgrowth. The PHR proteins (consisting of mammalian Phr1/MYCBP2, Drosophila Highwire and C. elegans RPM-1) function in each of these events in development. Here, we review PHR function across species, as well as the myriad of signaling pathways PHR proteins regulate. These findings collectively suggest that the PHR proteins are intracellular signaling hubs, a concept we explore in depth. Consistent with prominent developmental functions, genetic links have begun to emerge between PHR signaling networks and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism, schizophrenia and intellectual disability. Finally, we discuss the recent and important finding that PHR proteins regulate axon degeneration, which has further heightened interest in this fascinating group of molecules.

Self-report measures are used to illustrate differences in behavior, temperament, and maternal feelings towards her infant and her experiences associated with motherhood. Based on previous literature highlighting the protective and beneficial effects of oxytocin during maternity, results from this longitudinal study examining mother-infant dyads from prenatal to three-months postpartum are aimed to combine psycho-social and biological components associated with child rearing to form a complete understanding of the mother-infant bonding system. While our research provides support for certain psycho social components by demonstrating an irrefutable impact of depressive symptoms and breastfeeding self-efficacy on later displays of postpartum attachment, there is still room for question in regards to the role that oxytocin may play.

This study examined the physiological response and physical performance of three species of sea turtle hatchlings (D. coriacea, C. caretta, and C. mydas) after crawling over various heights of Sargassum. In all three species, the addition of Sargassum significantly increased the amount of time it took to crawl down the pathway. There was no significant difference in righting response, blood glucose levels, or plasma corticosterone concentrations between different crawling treatments. During periods of high Sargassum accumulation, hatchlings will spend more time on the beach trying to navigate through the algae, leaving them vulnerable to predation for longer periods of time.
