It paid tribute to Elizabeth, another virgin ruler, as well as providing the audience with an ideal of chastity to emulate. In Masque of Queens, the black face of the moon rather than the white appears. Spouting common superstitions of the day, the witches bring to mind the then current religious inquisitions and King James I's fascination with demonology. Last but not least appears Ursula in Bartholomew Fair. Lusty and capricious, she projects the image of the moon promoted by astrologers. Her lunatic influence on her "customers" underlines the impact of the telescope, which by revealing imperfections on the lunar face, brought the moon down to earth. The symbol begins as a transcendant emblem and ends as a mundane caricature.

Show moreThe Java Devlopment Environment defines SQLJ as a standard way of embedding the relational database language SQL in the object-oriented programming language Java. Oracle Corporation provides an extension of SQLJ that supports dynamic SQL constructs for the processing of SQL commands that are not completely known at compile time. Unfortunately, these constructs are not sufficient to handle all dynamic situations, so that the programmer has to depend on other SQL embeddings, such as JDBC, in addition to Oracle's SQLJ. In this thesis we implement several extensions to Oracle's SQLJ so that all dynamic situations can be programmed in SQLJ, without resorting to other SQL embeddings. We also add a sub-query based for loop facility, similar to the one provided in Oracle's database programming language PL/SQL, as an improvement over the iterator constructs that SQLJ provides. This thesis discusses the design, development and implementation of these SQLJ extensions, and provided applications that show the utility of these extensions in terms of clarity and power.

Evoking the most recent theories of time and space, the Proustian staircase at once moves and docs not move; it is both fluid and tl·ozcn, as an object in material space and in the mental space of memory. From simpler architectural construct to overarching metaphor, the staircase transfonns into a space-time amalgam resonating throughout the text. From grand marble staircases to fetid back stairs, Proust also uses stairways to dramatize ascending, socially ambitious characters and abject, declasscd failures . More than just a representation of social hierarchy or scientific progress, however, Proust's staircases model life and time, both their progression and their decay, and ultimately the coming-towriting of the narrator.

Blake's characters, equal and interdependent in their gender, ultimately reabsorb into the Eternal Male, Urthona, who lives within the Eternal Female, Jerusalem. Jerusalem and Urthona together create the bi-gendered, eternal figure, or the ultimate eternal state. The original fall from Eternity creates a war against Eternal Death, in which the original eternal figure separates into zoas and emanations, and then into spectres and shadows; the further away from the eternal figures the characters move, the further debased and corrupted their characters become. The characters ultimately achieve bi-gendered redemption through interdependent cooperation and the use of states.

Show moreThis study presents an overview of several implementations within North America of the philosophy and/or pedagogy of Paulo Freire from the time period 1967-1987. It concentrates on the usage of Freire within several specific areas of adult, secondary, or higher educational settings. It includes categories of Freire practitioners ranging from those who use the total Freire concept to those who have modified, adapted or operationalized it. Because Freire's philosophy comes out of a unique social, historical context within Brazil, the social, historical context of American education and its attendant philosophical debate from the 1960's-1980's is briefly reviewed. The appropriateness of considering Freire as an individual who presents a "language of possibility" within any changing societal context is presented. Freire's biographical background and the sources of his philosophy are described in brief. An overview of his major anthropological/educational constructs is given. His pedagogy and literacy design are summarized, and the developmental nature of his ideas is stressed. General implementations of Freire within North America are included and several individuals or institutions that have had some long-term use of Freire are listed. Their comments and descriptions of implementation are reviewed. The material includes published and unpublished sources as well as information obtained from a 1987 questionnaire sent by the author to a representative sample of those using the ideas of Freire. Evaluations and assessments of such Freire-inspired programs are registered. Practitioner evaluations are given priority over general critique, but a sampling of both is included. Several focus upon the positive responses of learners to this approach, while others classify specific problems encountered when implementation within the North American context is attempted. The resource base includes existing sources (books, published reviews) from 1967-1987 and primary sources (survey results and individual interviews). General reflections about the use of Freire within North America during 1967-1987 are offered. Some future projections are included. Recommendations include continued study of Paulo Freire, circulation of "network" names, increased critical assessment, and some "updating" of the Freire model to include new areas of brain research and other learning models. It is assumed that North Americans will continue to actively engage in critical dialogue with Freire philosophy while maintaining a sensitivity to their own cultural and historical context.

However, Brazilian feminisms remain on the margins of American academic discourse. In the United States, conceptualizations of feminism are often complicated by epistemological practices that treat certain political actions as feminist while dismissing others. The invisibility of Brazilian feminisms within feminist scholarship in the United States, therefore, justifies the need for further research on the topic. My research focuses on feminist articles published by Revista Estudos Feministas, one of the oldest and most well known feminist journals in Brazil. Using postcolonial, postmodern, and critical race feminist theories as a framework of analysis, my thesis investigates the theories and works utilized by feminists in Brazil. I argue that Brazilian feminisms both challenge and emulate the social, economic, and geopolitical orders that divide the world into Global North and South.

The main contribution of this dissertation is a set of new results regarding factorization of groups, with emphasis on the nonabelian case. We introduce a novel technique for factorization of groups, the so-called free mappings, a powerful tool for factorization of a wide class of abelian and non-abelian groups. By applying a certain group action on the blocks of a factorization, a number of combinatorial and computational problems were noted and studied. In particular, we analyze the case of the group Aut(Zn) acting on blocks of factorization of Zn. We present new theoretical facts that reveal the numerical structure of the stabilizer of a set in Zn, under the action of Aut(Zn). New algorithms for finding the stabilizer of a set and checking whether two sets belong to the same orbit are proposed.

It is the intent of the research to determine whether the difference in proportions allocated to these functions may be predicted in terms of demographic and socio-economic attributes of the cities. Essentially, the research will be concerned with determining the degree of correlation between the dependent variables (the allocations) and the independent variables (the attributes) and explaining as much of the variance in the subject's spending patterns as is possible.

We characterize all Prufer domains R between D[X] and K[X]such that the conductor C of K[X] into R is non-zero. As an application, we show that for n > 2, such a ring R has the n-generator property (every finitely generated ideal can be generated by n elements) if and only if R/C has the same property.

Identifying primary prey types of nesting wading birds is important for the hydrologic restoration of wetlands. I collected nestling boluses during the 2008 and 2009 nesting seasons from three species of wading birds that nest in the northern Everglades: White Ibis, Tricolored Herons and Snowy Egrets. White Ibis bolus composition was dominated by crayfish in both years, but exhibited some variation with landscape water depth in 2009; fish use was greatest when the wetland landscape was relatively dry. In contrast, the prey of Tricolored Herons and Snowy Egrets were primarily fish and their respective diets did not differ from one another in either fish species composition or size structure.

Through close readings of Bosola’s meditations and Ferdinand’s lycanthropy, I consider how Webster constructs animals as simplistic creatures that enjoy a desirable existence, where body and soul are continuous. Within Webster’s play, the dualist conflict between human body and human soul is a primary subject of discourse. Various human characters see animal existence as preferential, as they view animals as automated creatures that do not suffer the self-consciousness that humans do. This model of animal existence further increases the thematic significance of Ferdinand’s lycanthropy, which I argue is an escape from the discontinuity between the human body and human soul.

Regulation has played more of a role on the recent rapid expansion of the market than natural market forces. This thesis surveys a brief history of ethanol fuel usage and regulatory action in the United States and provides a few econometric models of production and consumption. Public policy creates a high level of demand for ethanol without consumer preferences changing much. This model could be used to assess the likely effects on the ethanol market of an MTBE ban in states that currently allow its use as an oxygenate.

Show moreThis thesis will investigate the ways in which Hillary Rodham Clinton, former First Lady of the United States and the Junior United States Senator from New York State, appropriated strategies of liberal feminism in her political career as the first modern, working mother to serve as First Lady. A feminist First Lady, Clinton broke through the social expectations placed upon that role in an unprecedented manner by taking an active part in the political strategy and substance of her husband's administration. Her successful campaign for the United States Senate in 2000 as the first former First Lady to hold such an office proved that she has her own political clout independent of her husband. Hillary Rodham Clinton has all the marks of a liberal feminist success story: a strong political background and educational credentials, unfettered ambition, mastery of public discourse, her own political identity, and a real commitment to tough policymaking and representation in Washington. Yet despite this success, liberal feminism presents problems for the women's movement generally. After mapping the history of Hillary Rodham Clinton as a feminist political figure, I will examine whether liberal feminism is adequate in challenging patriarchal structures and other related forms of domination.
