Increased awareness of color and its uses also have implications which affect those outside the realm of art education. This issue was first explored by a search into the foundations of color meaning, i.e., factors which influence views on color. How color is used in painting was categorized into five main modes which include the naturaluse of color, heraldic, harmonic, pure, and spiritual. Instances of color usage were f ound in the works of selected modern painters known as colorists. A dimension of increased awareness of color was demonstrated through the use of a color survey. This survey required individuals to express their feelings towards specific colors. The implications these findings have for teaching the art process were discussed. An effective program would include a dynamic interaction between knowledge, personal exploration, and communication between instructor and student.

Show moreThis dissertation explored a type of qualitative case study based on the experiences of 11 graduates from Leadership Collier, a Naples, Florida-based leadership program, who had run for public office after completing the program. The researcher assessed the program goals, participant experiences and motivation with regard to community involvement and running for elected office. It was the belief of the researcher that there was a need for more qualified and effective leaders to run for public office at the local, state, and national levels of government. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation study was to understand what leadership experiences gained through participating in a leadership training program could empower and motivate a person to run for public office. Information provided in this dissertation includes an introduction, the study’s purpose and research questions, methodology, critical terms, an examination of the literature review, study findings, researcher reflections, and recommendations for future studies. Data analysis codes in this study include sense of community, social capital, program design, confidentiality, diversity, bonding, empowerment, and motivation. Research findings showed that Leadership Collier has motivated and empowered select citizens to run for public office by providing experiences that have enabled individuals to develop leadership skills, become aware of community issues, develop confidence and a sense of community, expand social capital, and increase engagement in the community. Keywords: leadership, public office, empowerment, motivation

Show moreCharter schools have often boasted about differentiating themselves in the educational marketplace. With today’s growing emphasis on student achievement, whether this differentiation has had a positive effect on student learning is still debatable. The purpose of this exploratory mixed-methods study was to establish if innovation is a reported practice in charter schools in Miami-Dade and Sarasota Counties in Florida and to determine if a relationship exists between innovation reporting and student achievement as measured by Florida school grades. A qualitative analysis of School Improvement Plans and school websites for a 62 school sample was utilized. As well as a quantitative measure of the correlation between level of reported innovation in eight categories (organizational structure, ideology and culture, leadership models, professional development for teachers, curriculum, technology, parent involvement, and other) and student achievement, as measured by Florida’s school grade formula. The study found that charter schools in both counties reported innovation at high levels with only three schools reporting innovations in fewer than five categories of innovation. An examination of opposing forces of loose and rigid structure, autonomy and policy control, as well as creativity and standardization led to findings of less reported instances of innovation on average in schools with looser structure, autonomy, and creativity. Furthermore, Title I schools and high minority student population schools (≥50%) showed signs of innovation saturation, with no value added to student achievement (school grade averages) by reported innovation beyond a moderate level. Still, reported innovation level (overall categories of innovation) and student achievement (school grade averages) showed a negligible relationship (r = -.062). In conclusion, reported innovation existed in charter schools despite opposing forces, but was often similar across charter schools. In fact, past a moderate level of innovation, there was no value added to school grades for Title I and high minority charter schools. Yet, a weak, negative relationship existed between specific reported innovations in combination (professional development in pedagogy, tutoring programs, non-district behavior programs and incentive, and multiple levels) and student achievement (school grade averages) which can inform us on the nature of reporting.

Show moreThe effectiveness and the sustainability of the Holy Roman Empire remained a subject of debate over the past two centuries. While nationalist historians derided the lack of centralized institutions, revisionist historians after the Second World War largely stressed the positive aspects of the Empire. The Reichskammergericht and the Reichshofrat were two of the institutions that experienced this positive reassessment. While most historians focused on the effectiveness of the Reich courts during the existence of the Empire, few have examined the perception of the courts immediately after the demise of the Empire in 1806. This thesis analyzes the perception of the courts through the eyes of leading politicians (including Humboldt, Hardenberg, and Stein) to reinforce the argument that these institutions were valued. Since the courts played a pivotal role in the Holy Roman Empire, it is more than likely that these individuals had a generally favorable view of the Holy Roman Empire as well.

Show moreThe controversial debate over Affirmative Action in higher education institutions center on the constitutionality of legislative public policies to enact steps to create racially diverse campuses. Concerns arise from Affirmative Action policies in undergraduate and graduate college admission that those policies cause further harm than good for all prospective students. Citizens comment that racialized preferential treatment in public policies steer society from becoming equal and continues racial tension. I argue that Affirmative Action is constitutional under the Equal Protection Clause in the Fourteenth Amendment and essential for minorities as a legal remedy for past wrongs.

Show moreExtant literature has struggled to identify definitive purpose for shareholder proposals, finding them to depend on their context. Progressively, climate change has gathered interest at annual meetings where shareholders present proposals related to the subject. The literature builds expectations for the role of obsolescence, regulation and other forms of activism to motivate innovation with respect to these proposals. The literature also establishes how diversification can serve as a defense. I test the impact that shareholder proposals have on the information environment and on the corporate behaviors of innovation and diversification. I find that capital markets are responsive to proposal pressures and that there are improvements in the information environment. I find that firms in receipt of shareholder proposals related to climate change innovate and diversify more. I find wealth enhancements for these corporate behaviors spurred by climate-related proposals. While definitive statements on causality may elude, my results suggest that shareholder proposals have real effects.
