This thesis examines a group of fantasy stories from Lovecraft’s Dream Cycle, overlooked in favor of his horror tales. I argue these stories merit attention for their presentation of an ideological conflict central to much of Lovecraft’s work: reality, knowledge, and science vs. fantasy, imagination, and dreams. Lovecraft demonstrates the limitations and importance of one’s perspective, illustrating the need to be flexible in one’s beliefs and viewpoints. I also argue that this understanding of perspective encourages alternative readings of Lovecraft’s other work, as well as enabling a greater understanding of horror and fear of the unknown.

The younger life history stages of marine turtles (eggs, hatchlings) often fail to survive. To compensate, sea turtles nest several times/season and produce large clutches of eggs. The hawksbill produces the largest clutches (150 eggs) and the smallest hatchlings of any marine turtle. My study, done at Jumby Bay in Antigua, West Indies, was designed to determine whether they did so to compensate for loss in the nest, hatchling loss in the water, or both factors. I found that most of the eggs (79 %) survived to become hatchlings that left the nest and entered the sea. However, 88 % of the hatchlings swimming offshore were taken by predators within minutes after they began their migration. These results suggest that at Jumby Bay, large clutch size is favored in hawksbills because of predation pressures on the hatchlings.

The practice of people enhancing their natural features dates back several millennia before written text to ancient Egyptian and other early civilizations. Throughout time, these augmentation methods have been studied and perfected to create what is now a multibillion-dollar industry. The earliest forms of cosmetics derived from locally available natural resources but over time transformed to incorporate synthetic and potentially harmful substances including lead, formaldehyde, and benzophenone. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the timeline of cosmetic use and to inquire into the compulsion to use cosmetics for embellishing the natural look, the introduction of artificial chemicals into cosmetics, the minimal protective legislative guidelines currently in place, and the necessary reforms required to ensure the safety of the consumer.

This research utilized US quarterly data from 2003 QI to 2013 QII. In the first part the research used variables from the Keynes economic model and utilized two-stage least square analysis to assess the effect of government spending on GDP. The results from the regression analysis indicate that an increase of one dollar in government spending increases GDP by 1.569 dollars. The researcher found that the general government spending multiplier was 1.9. The coefficient for government spending in the Recovery Act was 0.383, implying that for every one dollar in government spending, Recovery Act spending on capital investments contributed 0.383 dollars.

Show moreA significant amount of reinforced concrete structures in the USA are reaching the design life span of 50 years. Degradation of these infrastructure due to corrosion presents an economical, safety and quality of life challenge for our society. Being able to study and determine the conditions of our infrastructure, perform maintenance before failure and predict failure before occurrence has become critical for our society and our way of life. This study was performed to add to existing research in the understanding of the relationships between the corrosion current of the embedded carbon steel rebars in reinforced concrete, rebar mass loss due to corrosion and the degradation of the mechanical properties of the carbon steel embedded in high performance concrete structures. The study also aimed to study the influence of different independent variables such as the chloride solution reservoir size and the concrete composition of the prepared specimens for the study. Specimens for the study were prepared by embedding three carbon steel size #4 rebars in blocks of high performing concrete with different admixture to enhance their performance against corrosion. To initiate corrosion specimens were exposed to accelerated chloride transport method (electromigration). To accelerate corrosion some samples were selected for anodic polarization and additional electromigration. After corrosion initiation, the rebars Open Circuit Potential (OCP) and corrosion current (Icorr) were periodically measured using a galvanostat device from April 2017 to August 2021. The OCP average values showed that all the rebars considered in this study were in active corrosion. Faraday’s law was used to determine the rebar calculated mass loss from the measured corrosion current and the elapse time between measurements. The rebar mass loss was in turn used to model the loss of the physical properties of the rebar (yield strength, ultimate strength, and ultimate strain) using (Vanama & Ramakrishnan, 2020) model. Analysis of these parameters results showed a direct relationship between the measured corrosion current and the calculated mass loss of the corroding rebar. The study also showed a direct relationship between the calculated mass loss of the corroding rebar and the degradation of the physical properties of the rebar.

Show moreA report issued in 2012 by the United States Government Accountability Office (US Government Accountability Office, 2012) concluded that the United States is not producing enough graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to meet the demands of its economy. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (2001), fewer than fifty percent of students nationally possess a solid command of mathematical content. This study tested whether the insertion of Academic Service Learning (ASL) into intermediate algebra courses improved students’ performance, their motivation to learn the subject, and attitudes towards mathematics learning. ASL is an educational strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities (Duffy, Barrington, West, Heredia, & Barry, 2011). The subjects in this study were thirty-four students enrolled in intermediate algebra at a large public university in southeast Florida. The participant group consisted of fifteen students who completed the requirements of the ASL program and the comparison group consisted of nineteen students who initially showed interest in the program but dropped out of the study early in the semester. Through a mixed method analysis, the study found that the proportion of students who passed the course in the ASL group was greater than the proportion of students in the non-ASL group. Similarly, the mean final course grade in the ASL group was higher than the mean final course grade in the non-ASL group. The results of the qualitative analyses showed that all the participants enjoyed the ASL experience. In addition, some participants felt that the ASL project raised their motivation to learn mathematics and increased their competence in mathematics. However, both quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed that the students’ participation in the ASL project did not affect their attitudes towards mathematics learning. The study concluded that Academic Service Learning has the potential to help improve students’ success rates in developmental mathematics courses as well as increase their motivation to learn the subject.

The thesis focused on how colorism affects one’s idea of beauty and self-esteem, and how young women are portrayed. A content analysis of five television programs (Black-ish, Dear White People, Empire, Grown-ish, and The Carmichael Show) were analyzed. Through the analysis, darker complexion women were analyzed and it was found negative attributes were used to describe them in terms of beauty, and for lighter skinned females positives attributes were used throughout the show. In the five episodes examined that aired in the 21st century, beauty was defined based on one’s complexion as it was before in previous centuries. Issues of colorism are still displayed in 21st century television shows and through positive and negative caricatures. Colorism has a direct impact on how women of color are perceived and it can directly impact their self-esteem.
