Iscan and Gomez (1982) suggested that there were skeletal elements recovered that provided evidence for the existence of Paget's disease (Osteitis deformans ) in the population. However, this study reanalyzes the elements and using new technology such as Computed Tomography scans shows that there was no conclusive evidence of Paget's disease. Instead, the skeletal morphology of the affected bones is comparable to the characteristics of treponemal disease which, unlike Paget's disease, is found in sites contemporaneous to Briarwoods.

Show moreWireless Internet access has recently gained significant attention as wireless/mobile communications and networking become widespread. Voice over IP service is likely to play a key role in the convergence of IP based Internet and mobile cellular networks. The mobility management performance for Mobile IP and Session Initiation Protocol is the focus of this thesis. After illustrating the operation of the protocols, the discrete event simulator, Network Simulator 2 (ns2), is used to compare the performance of the two protocols. The comparison of the protocols is done by comparing average end-to-end delay and the ratio of the number of packets received to the number of packets originally sent (Packet Delivery Fraction). The impact of mobility is analyzed by studying the performance of the protocols, for various mobility scenarios. The effect of an increase in the number of nodes and increase in velocity of the mobile node on the performance of the Mobile IP and SIP is compared. The performance of the Mobile IP and SIP is compared by measuring the performance metrics of the two protocols for similar simulations. The results obtained as a result of the simulations leads us to some interesting conclusions.

Show moreK-means algorithm and Kohonen network possess self-organizing characteristics and are widely used in different fields currently. The factors that influence the behavior of K-means are the choice of initial cluster centers, number of cluster centers and the geometric properties of the input data. Kohonen networks have the ability of self-organization without any prior input about the number of clusters to be formed. This thesis looks into the performances of these algorithms and provides a unique way of combining them for better clustering. A series of benchmark problem sets are developed and run to obtain the performance analysis of the K-means algorithm and Kohonen networks. We have attempted to obtain the better of these two self-organizing algorithms by providing the same problem sets and extract the best results based on the users needs. A toolbox, which is user-friendly and written in C++ and VC++ is developed for applications on both images and feature data sets. The tool contains K-means algorithm and Kohonen networks code for clustering and pattern classification.

Show moreWe discuss a set of indirect combining techniques for addressing multi-category classification problems that have been used in many domains, but not for intrusion detection systems. In contrast to the indirect combining techniques, direct techniques generally extend associated binary classifiers to handle multi-category classification problems. An indirect combining technique decomposes the original multi-category problem into, based on some criteria, multiple binary-category problems. We investigated two different approaches for building the binary classifiers. The results of the binary classifiers are then merged using a combining technique---three different combining techniques were studied. We implement some of the indirect combining techniques proposed in recent literature, and apply them to a case study of the DARPA KDD-1999 network intrusion detection project. The results demonstrate the usefulness of using indirect combining techniques for the multi-category classification problem of intrusion detection systems.

The training dataset is first split into subsets, and base learners are induced on each of these splits. The predictions are combined in such a way that an instance is identified as noisy if it is misclassified by a certain number of base learners. The Multiple-Partitioning Filter combines several classifiers on each split. The Iterative-Partitioning Filter only uses one base learner, but goes through multiple iterations. The amount of noise removed is varied by tuning the filtering level or the number of iterations. Empirical studies on a high assurance software project compare the effectiveness of our noise removal approaches with two other filters, the Cross-Validation Filter and the Ensemble Filter. Our studies suggest that using several base classifiers as well as performing several iterations with a conservative scheme may improve the efficiency of the filter.

Anxiety can contribute to everything from heightened emotional stress, increased pain, blood pressure changes as well as lethal cardiac dysrhythmia and reduction in peripheral and renal perfusion. Research has shown, music as a therapeutic modality, relieves anxiety and pain in patients before and after surgery. What patients hear during surgery can be a rich source of anxiety. Wearing earphones during surgery will eliminate this source of anxiety. Music is reported to distract patients in an alien environment and provide a comforting and familiar effect in discomforting conditions. Soothing music can produce a hypometabolic response characteristic of relaxation in which autonomic, immune, endocrine, and neuropeptide systems can be altered. Similarly, music produces desired psychological responses and reduction in anxiety and fear.

Traveling Salesman problem is a well known nonlinear combinational optimization problem. In Traveling Salesman problem, a fixed number of cities is given. An optimal tour of all these cities is required such that each city is visited only once and the total tour distance to be covered has to be minimized. Hopfield Networks have been applied for generating an optimal solution. However there are certain factors which result in instability and local optimization of Hopfield Networks. In such cases the solutions obtained may not be optimal and feasible. In this thesis, the application of the K-Means algorithm is combined with the Hopfield Networks to generate more stable and optimum solutions to traveling salesperson problem.

Because the incunabula saw the bringing together of the miniscules and majuscules (upper- and lowercases) for use on a single page and because for the first time in Western history the exact same letter form could be used in many printed works at once, we have, now frozen in our visual language, letter forms conforming to set but often contradictory rules of rhythm and order, size and proportion. I will explore these rules and contradictions in the development of a typeface and will, on occasion, break them, developing rules of my own.

The proposed API is organized in such a way that it can easily be integrated with the existing suite of APIs defined in the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)---the Java edition that specifically targets mobile devices. The proposed API provides J2ME programmers with components that simplify multiplayer mobile game development process. The main idea of the API is to encapsulate low-level technical details associated with establishing and maintaining communication links between mobile devices. A programmer who uses the API is only concerned with the high-level multiplayer aspects of programming such as managing game players and sessions. The actual implementation of the API on each target device is responsible for utilizing the supported underlying network protocols such as the Bluetooth, HTTP and IEEE 802.11b.

Furthermore, the surface condition was investigated with regard to the pitting potential. Pitting potential distributions versus the chloride content and surface finish were obtained. Pitting resistance was lowered as chloride was added and as the surface became rougher. Furthermore, a critical chloride to hydroxide ratio as a function of potential was determined for each material. Finally, according to the results of this study, the MMFX reinforcing steel was considered to have a corrosion performance close to that of Type 2201 stainless steel for bridge use. MMFX-II specimens with a polished surface exhibited more positive pitting potentials than did ones with an as-received finish.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) have been used along with the data mining techniques to detect intrusions. In this thesis, we present a comparative study of intrusion detection using a decision-tree learner (C4.5), two rule-based learners (ripper and ridor), a learner to combine decision trees and rules (PART), and two instance-based learners (IBK and Nnge). We investigate and compare the performance of IDSs based on the six techniques, with respect to a case study of the DAPAR KDD-1999 network intrusion detection project. Investigation results demonstrated that data mining techniques are very useful in the area of intrusion detection.

However no significant differences in expression of lipocalin was detected between the juvenile male and female rabbits. Matrix metalloproteinses are members of the metzincin family. Gelatinases (MMP-2 & MMP-9) are known to degrade the extracellular matrix. Sexually mature female animals showed the highest expression of gelatinases. Higher expression of MMP-9 was detected in the epithelial (acinar) cell culture supernatants. Higher expression of MMP-2 was detected in the interstitial (lymphocyte) cell culture supernatants from the lacrimal gland.

To investigate the mechanism of this sperm precedence, the sperm contained within the spermatheca of field-caught females was counted. Captured females contained the remains of between 1 and 23 spermatophores, each received at a separate mating. The sperm number did not depend on the number of matings. These data suggests that sperm may be lost from the spermatheca, and that it may never arrive there after some matings. In addition to this investigation, a study on the pattern of arrangement within the spermatheca of Utetheisa ornatrix was conducted. Sperm in the spermatheca from multiple and single mated females was fixed and DNA-labeled, and the distribution of eupyrene sperm assessed. The eupyrene sperm distribution did not vary across the sperm mass or with the mating history of the female. Further investigation is required to analyze the distribution of the apyrene sperm tangles within the spermatheca whose function could signify a blocking mechanism against rival sperm.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of cocaine with and without alcohol use on cognitive measures. It was hypothesized that the combined effects of cocaine and alcohol will compile, allowing for greater deficits than from the effects of cocaine alone. Fifty-four cocaine dependent subjects (C) were selected, 29 of them reported concurrent cocaine and alcohol dependence (CA). Neuropsychological tests revealed significantly lower scores by the C group compared to the CA group on one measure of executive functioning only. There were significantly lower scores by both C and CA groups compared to norms in areas of memory, attention, psychomotor skills, and executive functioning. The present study supports mild impairment of memory and executive functioning measures in cocaine users but does not support a more detrimental effect from alcohol.

Show moreMarine pipeline cathodic protection systems for asymmetrical situation were systematically investigated by means of a newly proposed approach and Boundary Element Method (BEM). Potential attenuation profiles from BEM modeling indicate that far-field cathode potentials of different pipe sections approach identical values under different coating resistance and different electrolyte resistivity conditions provided anodes are separated by at least 10m and metallic resistance is negligible. A series of equations based on the Slope Parameter Method (SPM) has been modified for more extensive applicability. Several design examples have been analyzed and the results verified by BEM. Cathode potential and current demands projected by the new method are consistent with those of BEM. The inclusive equation for even anode spacing CP has been modified to include the cable parameters by combining cable resistance and the anode resistance. Current demand for existing pipelines can be determined by either of two methods. The first utilizes the inclusive equation and involves solving this for current demand based upon a known potential profile. The other is based on SPM.

Show moreDaniel Defoe's seminal novel Robinson Crusoe reflects major philosophical currents of the Enlightenment and brings them to bear on diverse issues: scientific advances, new economic models, British colonialization, the relation of the Other to the self. But if Robinson Crusoe presents Friday as Other who fulfills a crucial role by helping Robinson as narrating subject successfully complete the journey of self-knowledge, Michel Tournier's postmodern revision, Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique , has a quite different teleological aim. Through constantly shifting narrative and theoretical perspectives Vendredi undertakes a forceful critique of key aspects of the Western tradition which Robinson Crusoe confidently hailed: Lockean and Cartesian reasoning, traditional framing dichotomies central to the Western tradition (Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel), modern conceptions of the thinking subject. Vendredi ultimately suggests the inability of the postmodern subject to know itself while simultaneously critiquing those Western traditions whose perspectives are founded on hegemonic globalization.

Erythropodium caribaeorum is an octocoral known for its production of novel anticancer agents, such as eleutherobin and its analogs as well as for its complex association with symbiotic dinoflagellates (Zooxanthellae; genus Symbiodimum). With this in mind, two sets of experiments were conducted using the extracts of the symbiotic algal cells from Erythropodium caribaeorum: an isolation and characterization of a novel tri-hydroxy sterol and a bioassay-guided isolation of three additional...
Show moreErythropodium caribaeorum is an octocoral known for its production of novel anticancer agents, such as eleutherobin and its analogs as well as for its complex association with symbiotic dinoflagellates (Zooxanthellae; genus Symbiodimum). With this in mind, two sets of experiments were conducted using the extracts of the symbiotic algal cells from Erythropodium caribaeorum: an isolation and characterization of a novel tri-hydroxy sterol and a bioassay-guided isolation of three additional compounds. All compounds exhibit significant bioactivity against the following three cell lines: the human melanoma cell line M14P, the colon cancer cell line RKO and the breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. Importantly, this study reports the first isolation of a bioactive polyhydroxy sterol from a gorgonian's symbiont and further suggests that these algae represent a promising sustainable resource for drug discovery.
