Several models of burnout have been proposed, but Christina Maslach’s (1976) model continues to be the most prominent, with her Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) remaining the most commonly used burnout assessment tool. According to her model, burnout is made up of three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. Multiple studies have found that burnout is most highly associated with factors involving an excess of job demands and a lack of personal and professional support. Prolonged burnout is associated with decreased effectiveness on the job, multiple health problems, and an increased risk of substance abuse. Burnout researchers have found evidence which points to increased burnout levels among mental health workers, though a few studies contain evidence that mental health workers may not be at a higher risk of burnout than employees in other fields.

To overcome these problems a technique of transplanting transfected ChC-progenitors into the cortex of developing mice, using single cell electroporation, was created. To compare both methods an analysis of the axon arborization and innervation of ChCs on post-natal day 16 and 21 in mice brains was done. The results show there is not a significant difference between the transplanted and intrinsic signal brains, and that the process of transplantation is a viable method for studying the ChC development.

Three strains of H. pluvialis from various culture collections, Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP 34/8), Nation Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES-144), and Scandinavian Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (SCCAP K-0048), were tested in different conditions to compare the synthesis of astaxanthin. The strains were compared in three different conditions, high light (control), low pH, and addition of salt water, and the amount of astaxanthin produced was compared using a 2-way T-test. This research is of interest to explore different methods for producing astaxanthin for the growing market.

Then, I explore science's obsession with the body in the many works and theories that have been developed since its origination in the seventeenth century. Finally, I apply critical feminist science studies to Michael Shermer's usage of the word 'pseudoscience' in his book, Why People Believe Weird Things. My proposed solution is that we stop using such a term in order to hold science accountable for its problematic aspects and legacies. I also suggest that we adopt Donna Haraway’s concept of ‘situated knowledge’ to replace objectivity.

Using theories from anthropology and ecofeminism, I show that the association of women with nature and fertility has led to their exploitation around the globe. Furthermore, racism played a role in the type of population control used on groups of women. I trace the use of Depo-Provera, Norplant, sterilization and even birth control pills in the population control policies pushed by Western politicians. I argue that these policies can be traced back to the eugenics movement and the association of women with untamed nature in need of male civilizing.

In 2016, 152 million children were in child labor worldwide. Though child labor is widely recognized as a global health problem, research on the health effects of child labor is limited. Summary measures of population health provide a way to present information about both mortality and morbidity of a given population as a single metric. This project utilized gretl, an open-source statistical package, to model the data using ordinary least squares (OLS) in order to determine if there is a correlation between health, which was quantified using summary measures of population health, and child labor. The regression analysis showed that there is a significant correlation between child labor and health adjusted life expectancy (HALE) at birth, but not between child labor and disability adjusted life years (DALYs).

The novel-in-progress uses the theory of evolution in relation to the fantasy race known as Fae in an urban setting to demonstrate the impact of misinformation from the media on social climate. This demonstration acts as a metaphor for real world misconceptions and social climate revolving around evolution. This thesis aims to illustrate the relation between the novel’s themes of media misrepresentation of information and real-world examples affecting our current society. This relation is the damaging impact that media misrepresentation has on social opinions that can lead to radicalizing of social issues such as racism, homophobia, and xenophobia.

Show moreHighland Beach (8PB9636) is a pre-historic archaeological site located in coastal southern Palm Beach County. While several studies have been conducted on human skeletal remains and other collections taken from this site over the past few decades, no prior faunal analysis has been conducted. The purpose of this study was to investigate the lifeways of the local Native American and to identify what faunal resources they were exploiting. My analysis focused on both invertebrate and vertebrate faunal material taken from levels 3-6 of Column Sample 'A' which was excavated from the site in 2001. More than 11 000 fragments of shell and bone were analyzed over the four levels, which led to the identification of several species of mollusks, crustaceans, fish, sharks, rays, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. The results of this study showed that the Native Americans primarily exploited marine resources and overtime there was an increased reliance on saltwater over freshwater resources.

I organized this information by IUCN conservation status to distinguish between invasive, native, and endemic species. I compare this list to similar floral surveys done in this preserve to obtain a view of how the composition of the preserve is changing over time. I used the initial conservation targets for the Abacoa Greenway to determine whether the standards for percent penetration of invasive/exotic species and fire treatment were being upheld and how this may have influenced the floral composition. Lastly, I discuss the species found within the preserve that contain known nutritional or medicinal properties that could be valuable for human use.

Intuition would suggest that one’s major of choice has an impact on this development, but the existing research appears mixed. Conducting a review of the existing literature pertaining to the subject, I establish a firm understanding of broad trends in the data. Correlative effects of major choice do exist in some specific areas, but it is currently unclear whether such effects exist as a product of student self-selection or from direct impacts of the curricula.

In our model, the incumbent political party induces the central bank to enact an expansionary monetary policy. This policy lowers the real interest rate, which leads to an increase in investments. As more individuals invest, assets inflate, leading to a boom-bust cycle; voter utility increases because asset values are higher. An increase in voter utility leads to an increased likelihood that the incumbent political party will be reelected. In an attempt to avoid a violent bust in assets, the central bank may implement a contractionary monetary policy to raise the real interest rate in increments. If the financial system becomes illiquid before the policy is implemented, then a speculative bubble burst occurs. The cycle regenerates a year before the next election when an accommodative monetary policy is implemented once again.
