The criteria for this system are based primarily on marketability factors, rather than ideal models or mathematical outcomes. The device is designed to be low cost and sufficiently safe for a somewhat disabled individual to use unsupervised at home, as well as in a therapist's office. The key features are the use of a barrier that inhibits the user from coming into contact with the cables as well as a "break-away" joystick that the user utilizes to perform the rehabilitation tasks. In addition, this device is portable, aesthetically acceptable and easy to operate. Other uses of this system include sports therapy, virtual reality and teleoperation of remote devices.

Hybrid hull structure is assembled by Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) frame and sandwich composite panels. Wave loads and slamming loads acting on both hull structures have been calculated according to ABS rules at sea state 5 with a ship velocity of 40 knots. Comparisons of deformations and stresses between two sets of loadings demonstrate that slamming loads have more detrimental effects on ship structure. Deformation under slamming is almost one order higher than that caused by wave loads. Also, Titanium frame in hybrid hull significantly reduces both deformation and stresses when compared to composite hull due to enhancement of in plane strength and stiffness of the hull. A 73m long hybrid hull has also been investigated under wave and slamming loads in time domain for dynamic analysis.

It is capable of modeling turbulence in all three directions of fluid flow: longitudinal, lateral, and vertical, separately, thus eliminating the assumption of homogeneous, isotropic flow. A thorough investigation into the expansion series is presented, with the strengths and weaknesses highlighted. Furthermore, numerical aspects and theoretical derivations are provided. This method is then tested against three highly complex flow fields: wake turbulence inside wind farms, helicopter downwash, and helicopter downwash coupled with turbulence shed from a ship superstructure. These applications demonstrate that this method is remarkably robust, that the developed autospectral models are virtually tailored to the design of white noise driven shaping filters, and that these models in closed form facilitate a greater understanding of complex flow fields in wind engineering.

Show moreMicromixer is one of the most significant components of microfluidic systems, which manifest essential applications in the field of chemistry and biochemistry. Achieving complete mixing performance at the shortest micro channel length is essential for a successful micromixer design. We have developed five novel micromixers which have advantages of high efficiency, simple fabrication, easy integration and ease for mass production. The design principle is based on the concept of splitting-recombination and chaotic advection. Numerical models of these micromixers are developed to characterize the mixing performance. Experiments are also carried out to fabricate the micromixers and evaluate the mixing performance. Numerical simulation for different parameters such as fluids properties, inlet velocities and microchannel cross sectional sizes are also conducted to investigate their effects on the mixing performance. The results show that critical inlet velocities can be predicted for normal fluid flow in the micromixers. When the inlet velocity is smaller than the critical value, the fluids mixing is dominated by mechanism of splitting-recombination, otherwise, it is dominated by chaotic advection. If the micromixer can tolerate higher inlet velocity, the complete mixing length can be further reduced. Our simulation results will provide valuable information for engineers to design a micromixer by choosing appropriate geometry to boost mixing performance and broaden implicational range to fit their specific needs. Accurate and complicated fluidic control, such as flow mixing or reaction, solution preparation, large scale combination of different reagents is also important for bio-application of microfluidics. A proposal microfluidic system is capable of creating 1024 kinds of combination mixtures. The system is composed of a high density integrated microfluidic chip and control system. The high density microfluidic chip, which is simply fabricated through soft lithography technique, contains a pair of 32 flow channels that can be specifically addressed by each 10 actuation channels based on principle of multiplexor in electronic circuits. The corresponding hardware and software compose the control system, which can be easy fabricated and modified, especially for prototype machine developing. Moreover, the control system has general application. Experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility of this microfluidic system for multi-optional solution combination.

This thesis studies the distortion of subsonic, high Reynolds number turbulent flow, with viscous effects ignored, that occur when a rotor is embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The analysis is based on Rapid Distortion Theory (RDT), which describes the linear evolution of turbulent eddies as they are stretched by a mean flow distortion. Providing that the gust does not distort the mean flow streamlines the solution for a mean flow with shear is found to be the same as the solution for a mean potential flow with the addition of a potential flow gust. By investigating the inflow distortion of small-scale turbulence for various simple flows and rotor inflows with weak shear, it is shown that RDT can be applied to incompressible shear flows to determine the flow distortion. It is also shown that RDT can be applied to more complex flows modeled by the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations.

A scale model wind turbine was placed into a wave tank that was completely covered and fitted with a variable speed fan to create different wind and wave conditions for testing. Through testing, different power coefficient vs. tip speed ratio graphs were created and a change in power coefficient was observed between steady operating conditions and operating conditions with waves. The results show a promising increase in power production for offshore wind turbines when allowed to operate with the induced motion caused by the amplitude and frequency of water waves created.

Show moreThe research presented in this thesis utilizes Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory with a dynamic wake model to customize the OrcaFlex numeric simulation platform in order to allow modeling of moored Ocean Current Turbines (OCTs). This work merges the advanced cable modeling tools available within OrcaFlex with well documented BEM rotor modeling approach creating a combined tool that was not previously available for predicting the performance of moored ocean current turbines. This tool allows ocean current turbine developers to predict and optimize the performance of their devices and mooring systems before deploying these systems at sea. The BEM rotor model was written in C++ to create a back-end tool that is fed continuously updated data on the OCT’s orientation and velocities as the simulation is running. The custom designed code was written specifically so that it could operate within the OrcaFlex environment. An approach for numerically modeling the entire OCT system is presented, which accounts for the additional degree of freedom (rotor rotational velocity) that is not accounted for in the OrcaFlex equations of motion. The properties of the numerically modeled OCT were then set to match those of a previously numerically modeled Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC) OCT system and comparisons were made. Evaluated conditions include: uniform axial and off axis currents, as well as axial and off axis wave fields. For comparison purposes these conditions were applied to a geodetically fixed rotor, showing nearly identical results for the steady conditions but varied, in most cases still acceptable accuracy, for the wave environment. Finally, this entire moored OCT system was evaluated in a dynamic environment to help quantify the expected behavioral response of SNMREC’s turbine under uniform current.

Sway velocities were less than twenty percent of mean forward speed with slip angles that were less than 20°. Thrust Loading Coefficients were compared to sway as a percent of forward speed. In small radius turns, no relationship was seen, while in larger radius turns, peaks of sway velocity corresponded with drops in thrust, but this was determined to be caused by reduced vehicle yaw in these intervals . Decoupling of thrust and yaw rate is recommended for future research.

Show moreWith the goal of improving chemical detection methods for buried improvised explosive devices (IED’s), the intention of this study is to show that functionalized nano-particles improve the sensing properties of a polymer applied to gas sensors. The approach was reinforcing the polymer, Nafion, with acid-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT’s). Ammonia was chosen as the analyte for its similarity to IED byproducts without the dangers of toxicity or explosion. Two sensor platforms were investigated: Quartz crystal microbalances (QCM’s) and microcantilevers (MC’s). Preliminary evaluation of treated QCM’s, via frequency analyzer, showed improvements in sensitivity and fast reversal of adsorption; and suggested increased stability. Tests with coated MC’s also supported the findings of QCM tests. Amplitude response of MC’s was on average 4 times greater when the Nafion coating contained CNT’s. Quantitative QCM testing with gas-flow meters showed that with CNT inclusion: the average number of moles adsorbed increased by 35% (>1.2 times frequency response); sensitivity improved by 0.63 Hz/ppt on average; although the detection threshold decreased marginally; but reusability was much better after extended exposures to concentrated ammonia.

Lastly a framework is proposed to estimate the mass position without the use of a position sensor, enabling the sensorless control of the coupled system and additionally providing the ability for the system to act as an actuator or a sensor. This is of value for health monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics, actuation and power transfer of a number of interconnected machines that have more than one electrical system, driving corresponding mechanical subsystems while being driven by the same voltage source and at the same time being spectrally separated and independent.

A study of concrete surface resistivity versus elevation of partially immersed reinforced concrete structures in a marine splash zone has been developed and correlations made between concrete quality and chloride diffusion, i.e., aggressive ion permeability. A conditioning procedure was developed in which the concrete moisture content is increased by direct contact with fresh water for several days. The electrical resistivity of concrete is known to be primarily a function of the degree of water saturation. Correlations between field obtained concrete surface resistivity values versus chloride diffusivity, and between normalized resistivity measured on cores obtained from the field versus chloride diffusivity has been established. The resistivity values were measured on structures with different concrete mixes and various ages.

This methodology relies on the use of advanced methods for machine vibration analysis and health monitoring. Because of some issues encountered with traditional methods such as Fourier analysis for non stationary rotating machines, the use of more advanced methods such as Time-Frequency Analysis is required. The thesis also includes the development of two LabVIEW models. The first model combines the advanced methods for on-line condition monitoring. The second model performs the modal analysis to find the resonance frequencies of the subsystems of the turbine. The dynamic modeling of the turbine using Finite Element Analysis is used to estimate the baseline of vibration signals in sensors locations under normal operating conditions of the turbine. All this information is necessary to perform the vibration condition monitoring of the turbine.

Show moreAn assessment of the thermal resource in the Straits of Florida was performed to estimate the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) potential. Direct measurements of the temperature profile across the Florida Straits were taken from nearshore Southeast Florida to the Exclusive Economic Zone boundary along four evenly spaced transects perpendicular to Florida's Southeast coast, spanning 160 km. Along the southern transects in summer, nearshore cold and warm water resources meet or exceed the average 20ÀC temperature difference required for OTEC. In winter, the nearshore average DT of 17.76ÀC can produce 59-75% design net power and 70-86% in spring with DT averaging 18.25ÀC. Offshore along the southern transects, a high steady DT from 18.5- 24ÀC creates an annual average net power of 120-125MW. Along the northern transects, the nearshore resource does not exist, but a consistent OTEC resource is present offshore, providing 70-80% design net power in winter, and 100-158% in spring and summer.

Show moreIn recent years, high strength concrete (HSC) is becoming an attractive alternative to traditional normal strength concrete (NSC), and is used in a wide range of applications. With the increased use of HSC, concern has developed regarding the behavior of such concrete in fire. Until now, the fire performance of HSC is not fully understood and more research is needed. Full-scale fire testing is time consuming and expensive, and the real fire scenario is different from the standard fire. Performance-based assessment methods, including numerical analysis and simplified method, are being accepted in an increasing number of countries. In this dissertation, the fire testing results both of HSC and NSC are presented, performance-based numerical models are developed to study the fire performance of reinforced concrete (RC) members, and simplified calculation methods are proposed to estimate the load capacity of fire-damaged RC columns/beams. A detailed and comprehensive literature review is presented that provides background information on the high temperature behavior of concrete materials and RC members, as well as information on fire performance assessment procedures and objectives. The fire testing results of seven batches of HSC and NSC are presented and discussed. The test results indicated that the post-fire re-curing results in substantial strength and durability recovery, and its extent depends upon the types of concrete, temperature level, and re-curing age. The fire tests also showed that violent explosive reduced the risk of HSC explosive spalling. The surface crack widths were also reduced during the re-curing process, and in most cases, they were found within the maximum limits specified by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) building code., Numerical models are developed herein to investigate the behavior in fire of RC columns and beams. The models have been validated against fire test data available in literature, and used to conduct parametric studies, which focused on the size effect on fire resistance of RC columns, and the effect of concrete cover thickness on fire endurance of RC beams. Simplified calculation methods have been developed to predict the load capacity of fire damaged RC columns/beams. This method is validated by five case studies, including thirty-five RC columns tested by other investigators. The predicted results are compared with the experimental results, and the good agreement indicates the adequacy of the simplified method for practical engineering applications.

This thesis aims at predicting this type of noise with the help of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of a wall jet using the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. A frequency spectrum is reconstructed using a representation of the turbulence with uncorrelated sheets of vorticity. Both aerodynamic and acoustic results are compared to experimental measurements of the flow. The CFD simulation of the flow returns consistent results but would benefit from a refinement of the grid. The surface pressure spectrum presents a slope in the high frequencies close to the experimental spectrum. The far field noise spectrum has a 5dB difference to the experiments.

Although power performance losses resulting from water accumulation also referred to as flooding, and power performance recovery resulting from water removal or purging, have been studied and monitored, the nexus between pulsing of reactants and power performance has yet to be established. This study introduces pulsing of reactants as a method of improving power performance. This study investigates how under continuous supply of reactants, pressure increase due to water accumulation, and power performance decay in PEMFCs. Furthermore, this study shows that power performance can be optimized through pulsing of reactants, and it investigates several variables affecting the power production under these conditions. Specifically, changes in frequency, duty cycle, and shifting of reactants as they affect performance are monitored and analyzed. Advanced data acquisition and control software allow multi-input monitoring of thermo-fluid and electrical data, while analog and digital controllers make it possible to implement optimization techniques for both discrete and continuous modes.

In the next step, 30.0 wt% of microspheres (3M hollow glass borosilicate, S-series) were mechanically mixed with the nanophased vinyl ester resin, and cast into rectangular molds. A small amount of styrene was used as dilutant to facilitate mixing of microspheres. The size of microspheres and SiC nanoparticles were 20-30 um and 30-50 nm, respectively. Tension, compression, and flexure tests were conducted following ASTM standards and a consistent improvement in strength and modulus within 20-35% range was observed. Fracture toughness parameters such as KIC and GIC were also determined using ASTM E-399. An improvement of about 11-15% was observed. Samples were also subjected to various environmental conditions and degradation in material properties is reported.

The study focused on the design, analysis, and life prediction of composite blade considering random ocean current, cyclic rotation, and hurricane-driven ocean current. A structural model for a horizontal axis FAU research OCT blade was developed. Following NREL codes were used: PreCom, BModes, ModeShape, AeroDyn and FAST. PreComp was used to compute section properties of the OCT blade. BModes and ModeShape calculated the mode shapes of the blade. Hydrodynamic loading on the OCT blade was calculated by modifying the inputs to AeroDyn and FAST. These codes were then used to obtain the dynamic response of the blade, including blade tip displacement, normal force (FN) and tangential force (FT), flap and edge bending moment distribution with respect to blade rotation.
