Show moreThis thesis discusses the coupling of a mechanical and electrical oscillator, an arrangement that is often encountered in mechatronics actuators and sensors. The dynamics of this coupled system is mathematically modeled and a low pass equivalent model is presented. Numerical simulations are then performed, for various input signals to characterize the nonlinear relationship between the electrical current and the displacement of the mass. Lastly a framework is proposed to estimate the mass position without the use of a position sensor, enabling the sensorless control of the coupled system and additionally providing the ability for the system to act as an actuator or a sensor. This is of value for health monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics, actuation and power transfer of a number of interconnected machines that have more than one electrical system, driving corresponding mechanical subsystems while being driven by the same voltage source and at the same time being spectrally separated and independent.

Show moreThe focus of this thesis is to develop lanthanide (Ln) luminescent materials through the exploration of coordination polymers and nanomaterials. Herein, dimethyl-3,4- furanedicarboxylate acid undergoes hydrolysis under hydrothermal conditions to form coordination polymers with lanthanide ions. The resulting coordination polymers exhibited luminescent properties, with quantum yields and lifetimes for the Eu-and Tb-CP of 1.14+-0.32% and 0.387=-0.0001 mx, and 3.33=-0.82% and 0.769=-0.006 ms, respectively. While the incorporation of lanthanides was not achieved in this work, progress toward the production of pure phase InP in the nanoregime has been made, using a low-cost, hydrothermal method. Through SEM and PXRD conflict, it is believed that pure INP particles with a size range of 58-81 nm were successfully synthesized.

Genistein isoflavone (4', 5', 7-trihydroxyisoflavone) is a dietary phytochemical with demonstrated anti-tumor activities in a variety of cancers. Topotecan Hydrochloride (Hycamtin) is an FDA-approved chemotherapy drug, primarily used for secondary treatment of ovarian,cervical and small cell lung cancers. This study was to demonstrate the potential anticancer activities and synergy of topotecan-genistein combination in LNCaP prostate cancer cells. The potential efficacy and mechanism of topotecan/genistein-induced cell death was investigated... Results: The overall data indicated that i) both genistein and topotecan induce cellular death in LNCaP cells, ii) topotecan-genistein combination was significantly more efficacious in reducing LNCaP cell viabiligy compared to either genistein or topotecan alone, iii) in all cases, cell death was primarily through apoptosis, via the activation of the intrinsic pathway, iv) ROS levels were increased and VEGF expression was diminished significantly with the topotecan-genistein combination treatment, v) genetic analysis of topotecan-genistein treatment groups showed changes in genetic expression levels in pathway specific apoptotic genes.... Conclusion: Treatments involving topotecan-genistein combination may prove to be an attractive alternative phytotherapy of adjuvant therapy for prostate cancer.

Show moreThe purpose of this research project is to investigate the impact adult day care centers have on cognitively impaired older adults and their caregivers. I extracted data from records of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center participants who have given consent and attended the center for a minimum of six months. I have discovered that participants benefit from this day center because they experience an improved quality of life, maintain a higher level of functioning, have more opportunities for socialization, and establish friendships and connections. Caregivers of participants enrolled in the day center also benefit because they receive access to caregiver support groups, are temporarily freed from the responsibility to care, and are pleased that participants attend the center and enjoy attending the center. These findings contribute to the current body of research literature that supports the contributions of adult day care centers.

The crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) is a homologous peptide found in crustaceans and has been shown to behave as a cardioaccelerator in a homologous system. This study describes the effects of CCAP in Drosophila larvae. We find that CCAP has an inotropic effect by causing a change in the contraction of blood vessels. We further investigate the effects of another possibly cardioactive conopeptide, γ-conopressin-vil, in Drosophila larvae. Elucidating the effects of conopetides in Drosophila larvae may translate to cardioactive therapeutic uses in mammalian systems.

Show moreThe N-acyltransferase enzyme (NAT) is responsible for synthesizing N-acyl-phospatidylethanolamines which is the first step in the synthesis of N-acylethanolamines, an important class of lipids that are used by the endocannabinoid system as signaling molecules. A calcium dependent NAT enzyme has been characterized biochemically but has not been cloned. The purpose of this study was to identify NAT enzyme in Caenorhabditis elegans. The strain MGL107 overproduces NAEs and as a result exhibits delayed growth. We have found that 10 of 35 genes with N-acyltransferase activity are able to restore growth of MGL107. Interestingly, acl-10, acl-12, and acl-13 also showed increased mRNA levels in a strain with reduced NAEs, possibly indicating a compensatory mechanism. These data suggests that these three genes could potentially code for the calcium dependent NAT and should be further analyzed biochemically.

It is an ever-growing issue with more slaves now than at any other point in history, totaling to roughly 27 million victims of the Human Trafficking Slave Trade. More specifically, Miami, Florida is the third largest site for human trafficking in the United States. By studying human behavior and targeting portals for slave trade, the redesigned objects will be placed in airports and suspected establishments in our environment. The irony created by the graphics, specifically on site, will capture attention and stir a public concern about human trafficking. Furthermore, it will also provide the audience with the means to take action. Our objective of this research is to find creative solutions through the redesigning of common items, such as traffic signs, and placing them in the environment to raise public awareness.

Show moreThe exotic apple snail Pomacea maculata appears to be gradually extending its range and increasing its density through much of south Florida. As a consequence, there is increasing interest in understanding its life history. One difficulty encountered in studying P. maculata is that it lays large, multilayered clutches of very small eggs that are impossible to count without disaggregating the egg mass; which results in the loss of viability. Using a previously described dis-aggregation technique, we weighed, dis-aggregated, photographed, and counted 70 egg masses of P. maculata collected from various locations in Lake Okeechobee. Using the resulting mass and egg numbers we developed an algorithm that reliably relates clutch mass to the number of eggs in a clutch, allowing the estimation of the number of eggs in a clutch without impacting the eggs’ viability and paving the way for investigations into studies on fecundity, hatching rate, etc.

Show moreRafael Leónidas Trujillo (1891-1961), the ruthless Dominican Republic ruler dominated his island’s politics for over thirty years. In his acclaimed 2000 novel, The Feast of the Goat, Nobel laureate, Mario Vargas Llosa, a Peruvian who has written about Latin American dictators, creates Urania Cabral, a 49-year-old émigrée who at 14 left her nation after becoming Trujillo’s sexual victim. The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush the presidential bullet-proof car on that fateful night of May 30th 1961. My study analyzes the complex narrative structures (Bakhtin’s heteroglossia) of the novel as masterful “rupturing” techniques. Through these, the reader pieces together the broken body politic of a traumatized nation as Urania reconstructs in painful detail how the impotent dictator digitally rapes her to ensure her body bears the mark of his brutal anger and frustration.

In this project, we investigate new ways to process Biosignals using embedded systems and computer simulations. We work with Texas Instruments’ OMAP L-138 Digital Signal Processor and Code Composer Studio IDE to process and analyze the electrical behavior of the human heart (ECG Biosignals). In addition to creating computer codes to process such signals, one expected outcome of this research project is a series of tutorials exploring Biomedical concepts and digital signal processing algorithms. Parvalbumin-containing (PV+) interneurons, a subtype of GABAergic interneurons, play an important role in cortical circuit function; however, it remains unknown how visual experience shapes their organization. We used immunohistochemistry to observe the organization of PV+ expression in visual cortex through visual maturity. Before visual experience, PV+ cell bodies and processes are most pronounced in layer 5, less in layer 2/3, and generally lacking in layer 4. Within 3 days of the onset of visual experience, PV+ organization undergoes a major shift, with PV+ expression found throughout layers 2-6. We performed dark rearing which determined these morphological changes are due to visual experience. This rapid change in parvalbumin organization may play a role in functional changes associated with the onset of visual experience.

Students taking Organic Chemistry I are required to participate in a section of OrgoBOND utilizing the web-based learning system in a smaller classroom than in previous discussion sessions. Student performance will be compared to that of students in future semesters participating in the same small PLTL setting, but with traditional recitation format. The advantages of introducing a web-based learning system into PLTL discussion sessions are (1) providing “hints,” (2) offering multiple attempts per question, and (3) instant grading and feedback. The computer assignments are unique to each student and reflect the topic recently reviewed in lecture. We will report on the preliminary results from data being collected on student performance, satisfaction levels, and retention rate changes.

Utilizing immunocytochemical techniques, TRH containing cells were identified with anti-TRH antibodies. For a positive control, we compared the established approach of examining corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-containing neurons with our approach of examining TRH neurons. We found that the images of TRH-containing cells were relatively unclear, implicating a quality problem of anti-TRH antibodies used in this study. Further investigation using in situ mRNA hybridization will likely clarify the involvement of TRH in MDMA toxicity.

For example, if we present the subject with a male candidate who appears aggressive and confrontational, will he be viewed the same way as a female candidate with the same characteristics? Will gender stereotypes cause the female candidate to be perceived more negatively than the male? Previous research has supported the idea that gender stereotypes will effect perception of candidates based on their gender, and this study will help to see if specific stereotypes are primed for application by the subject based on emotional displays.
