Show moreIn order to keep up with the high demand for biologically active molecules, chemists devised several synthetic strategies to access novel chemical spaces. The two main strategies to construct new scaffolds are to revisit underexploited or forgotten reactions or to devise new transformations. We are exploring a unique and underexploited reaction, the Himbert–Henn cycloaddition, to produce complex molecular scaffolds in a single step (strategy 1). In a second novel approach, we are modifying the Hantzsch 4-component reaction (4CR) by incorporating an α-amino ester residue to construct new molecules (strategy 2). Both of these reactions have great potential to synthesize novel and chiral molecules from proteinogenic α-amino esters. These unprecedented and complex polycyclic molecules have potential application in medicinal chemistry and natural product synthesis. 4-aza-podophyllotoxins obtained by the Hantzsch-4CR have been proven to be potent as anti-leukemia, anti-colon cancer, and vascular disrupting agents (with nanomolar activity).

Food is now evolving, preferences are varying from natural tastes to unnatural alterations due to chemical additives. We felt more research is needed to understand what motivates consumers to purchase varying types of foods. To understand consumers’ views on food preferences, we developed an online survey with fifteen questions and collected responses from 498 people. Our findings show a statistically significant difference between people of different gender, age, and regions regarding motivations to purchase food and food labeling. With this knowledge, we may better understand what people of different demographics feel regarding the current state of food wellness, and why they might prefer certain actions over others due to their diverse backgrounds.

Show moreStructural changes that alter hippocampal functional circuitry are implicated in learning impairments, mood disorders and epilepsy. Failure to properly gate neuronal activity arriving in hippocampus may be critical in developing synaptic circuits that generate seizures due to sustained elevations in hippocampal BDNF. Our data shows higher number of synaptic contact points (spines) on dendritic surfaces of granule cells in 2-3 month-old TgBDNF mice compared to WT mice, suggesting that there is increased cortical input onto granule cells. The dysregulation in mature GC circuitry in seizure dormant period in TgBDNF mice indicates early seizure susceptibility. Both mature GCs and immature GCs will show structural alterations in their input and/or output regions in TgBDNF mice long before full motor seizures are detectable pinpointing early dysregulations in the gating properties of these input neurons to hippocampus, favoring enhanced information processing and propagation. These collective results will help pinpoint intervention targets for seizure prevention.

The overall goal of this project is to determine whether isolation and semi-synthesis can provide adequate quantities for biological evaluation. Erythropodium caribaeorum is an abundant gorgonian in the Caribbean that produces two unique marine diterpenoids, erythrolides A and B, which have been shown to undergo photochemical transformations to yield more complex chemistry. In this project, erythrolides A and B will be isolated from E. caribaeorum collected off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida. These compounds will be exposed to ultraviolet light and analyzed to identify any chemical changes. New compounds will then be subjected to biological screening for cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines. This project will not only identify new bioactive compounds but also provide a novel route for the large-scale production of medically relevant marine natural products.

Sociologists have long questioned the role of the family, working to define it as an evolving institution. This qualitative deductive research study seeks to examine American family life and how it is sociologically interpreted on the screen. Using the sitcoms “Full House” to examine the role of fathers in the family; “Step By Step” to evaluate the dynamic of step-family life; “George Lopez” and “One Day at a Time” to observe Latino-American life; “Black-ish” to understand the realities of Black-American life, and “Boy Meets World” to determine the ways in which education is responsible for shaping identity; this study works to embed and question the depictions of sitcoms into an analysis of American family life.

Show moreWithin the framework of ongoing research studying the effects of oscillatory forces on pipe flow, an experiment was conducted to investigate the relationship between the nature of said forces and hydraulic jump resulting from the impact of the exiting flow onto an orthogonal surface. To this end, a reservoir supplying constant head and near-hydrostatic conditions was equipped with an exit fitting in its lower section. A section of PVC tubing extended vertically downward from this exit point and was straddled by a pair of dynamic loudspeakers placed opposite each other and connected to a receiver's inputs so as to play a signal of specified frequency. The resulting turbulent jet flow was then allowed to drop to a horizontal plate of circular shape. The outer lip of the plate triggered a circular hydraulic jump whose location was found to be directly dependent on the frequency of the forces exciting the flow.

Show moreThe purpose of this research project is to investigate the impact adult day care centers have on cognitively impaired older adults and their caregivers. I extracted data from records of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center participants who have given consent and attended the center for a minimum of six months. I have discovered that participants benefit from this day center because they experience an improved quality of life, maintain a higher level of functioning, have more opportunities for socialization, and establish friendships and connections. Caregivers of participants enrolled in the day center also benefit because they receive access to caregiver support groups, are temporarily freed from the responsibility to care, and are pleased that participants attend the center and enjoy attending the center. These findings contribute to the current body of research literature that supports the contributions of adult day care centers.

Show moreThe purpose of this research was to analyze the regulatory pattern of the PUN promoter in the expression of a marker gene, β-glucoronidase (GUS), within regenerated tobacco plants. The genes for neomycin phosphotransferase (NPT II) and GUS were included in the coding region of the Ti plasmid construct. The NPTII gene drove antibiotic resistance and was used to select and identify homozygous lines through the segregation of the progeny. Analysis through histochemical staining and genetic assays rendered putative transgenic lines that were cultivated for further assessment of progeny. First generation histochemical analysis of 14-day tissue formation resulted in no levels of expression for the GUS gene, which demonstrated that the flower-specific PUN promoter was not active in the leaf tissue. Further testing of gene activity throughout all stages of tissue formation for the first generation lines is required in order to assess regulatory pattern of the PUN promoter.
