Show moreThe development of uterine cancer and its progression can be linked to external elements such as carcinogens, natural hormones and chemotherapeutic drugs. The goal of this project was to investigate the possible correlation between exposure to specific chemical and an increase of mitotic defects. These defects manifest themselves as lagging chromosomes, multipolar spindles, and anaphase bridges. Using the uterine cancer cell line MES-SA as a model, we established a baseline for the mitotic defects in the absence and presence of various chemicals using γ-tubulin and DAPI-immune stained fixed cells. The cells were treated with varying concentrations of Vinyl Chloride, β-estradiol, Fluvestrant, and were examined using Immunofluorescent microscopy. We found that an exposure to Vinyl Chloride, β-estradiol and Fulvestrant have increased the number of mitotic defects in this cell line.

It involves the government’s and society’s reaction and implications about the role of gender in the violent deeds transforming society at times of revolutionary upheaval. The women examined are Charlotte Corday from eighteenth century France, Vera Zasulich from nineteenth century Russia, and Shi Jianqiao from twentieth century China. These women shared numerous qualities that, when combined, provided the women with the ability to see themselves as equals in the patriarchal societies in which they lived, allowing them to participate in the typically male dominated public sphere.

In Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, both male and female characters have the ability to fluidly move between classes and display behaviors that far outreach their class rank. In this thesis, I argue that Bronte uses the fluidity of class to dismantle the layers of patriarchy within the novel and larger social structures. Nelly Dean is both the narrator and a lowly housemaid within Wuthering Heights, however despite her status, she is given many privileges within the house and has a distinct sense of agency. This is a subtle queering of class structures, however Heathcliff is able to gain a massive quantity of wealth and move from a lowly stable boy to a stately land owner; this is also despite the racial stigma of Heathcliff being introduced as an orphaned gypsy. Many characters move both up and down within class structures through gaining and losing capital; both social and monetary. Despite this attempt by Bronte however, while she is successful in disrupting the patriarchy, she is ultimately unsuccessful in dismantling it because it is primarily the male characters who are able to move up within the social scale.

The catalytic activation of C-H bonds and the subsequent functionalization of hydrocarbons into heteroatom containing products is an area of fundamental importance in chemistry. Three different iridium pincer complexes for C-H activation were synthesized, IrCl3NNN, IrCl3NNN methyl, IrCl3NNNN (NNN= bis-((benzoimidazol))amine), (NNNmethyl = bis-(benzoimidazol)methyl)amine), and (NNNN = tris-((benzoimidazol))amine). These complexes were analyzed for C-H activation between benzoic acid and KOD/D2O solutions. We found that the C-H activation did not proceed catalytically. Also iron containing derivatives containing similar ligand motifs were synthesized , FeCl3NNNN, FeCl3IPI, FeCl3BPB, FeCl3BPB-OH (IPI = 2,6-diimidizoylpyridine, BPB = 2,6-dibenzoimidizoylpyridine, BPB-OH = 4-hydoxy-2,6,dibenzoimidizoylpyridine) and studied for their reactivity towards C-H bonds, O2 and N2 in aqueous basic media. The iron complexes were analyzed for the possibility of using them as O-atom or N-atom transfer reagents for hydrocarbon oxidation. Preliminary results suggest that upon reduction the iron complexes are capable of direct reaction with O2 and N2.

These two novels feature female detective protagonists pursuing elusive secrets and conspiracies while struggling with technological advancement that is altering the world they think they know. These detectives are Oedipa Maas in The Crying ofLot49 (1966) and Maxine Tarnow in Bleeding Edge (201 3). The Crying of Lot 49 is set in the Cold War mid-1960's, while Bleeding Edge begins in April of2001, and ventures through the events of September 11th, 2001. Pynchon places his detectives in these volatile eras so that they might serve to immerse the reader, enabling her then to understand the techno-social developments of the present. As the characters assimilate their new experiences into an intelligible design, so too does the reader need to augment his epistemological framework.

Real estate sellers tend to prefer the proceeds from the sale of their home with immediacy and surety rather than with a delay but waiting for loan approval causes such a delay. Using an ordinary least squares regression analysis, I assess whether home sellers are willing to concede discounts to buyers who offer to pay cash, to avoid the risks of transaction failure and delay of payment. I claim that, in contrast to a loan, a cash offer reduces the risk of a failed transaction, and this reduced risk is reflected as a discount on the price of the house greater than any discounts for loan-based transactions. This paper will also assess the magnitude of any discounts as a percentage of the home’s last list price on the market.

Show moreReal estate agents charge their clients a percentage on every property sold and this percentage, or commission, can range from five to six percent. The reason for this difference is unclear. Using an ordinary least squares regression, I attempt to find a connection between real estate agent performance and the amount commission which he or she charges. The premium agent effect assumes that more efficient, or “successful”, agents charge more for their services because they are overall better than the agents who charge a lower commission. Efficiency in this paper is determined by the percent difference in the listing price and sold price as well as the total days the property is on the market. My preliminary results provide strong evidence of the existence of the premium agent effect when agent performance is measured in terms of the percent difference in the listing price and the sold price, but not when measured using the total number of days the property is on the market.

Contact sports are traditionally a male dominated arena in the United States. Rollergirls both challenge and negotiate socially constructed gender norms by participating in this contact sport while dressing and fundraising according to heteronormative concepts of sex appeal and femininity. While Rollergirls demonstrate their strength and endurance on the track, they often do so under a derby persona, emphasizing their femininity to counterbalance their participation in a masculine activity. In this manner, Rollergirls demonstrate how intertwined athletic capability and sexuality are, and the difficulty gaining recognition in female athletics.

Samples from the same site were pooled together and sent to the San Diego Zoo Amphibian Lab for TaqMan PCR to verify the presence of chytrid fungi. Excluding the positive control, the results from the TaqMan PCR returned negative for the presence of either chytrid fungi species. This could indicate that these chytrid fungi are not yet present at the sites tested, or that these crayfish and shrimp species do not act as vectors for chytrid fungus in Southeast Florida. Alternatively, chytrid infection may be seasonal in Southeast Florida.

Show moreThe existence of market bubbles raises questions about economists‘ long held assumptions of rationality, costless arbitrage, and the efficient market hypothesis. I take a theoretical approach to the debate on market efficiency by modeling a ―no-value asset,‖ which are residential vacant lots that cannot be developed. I employ a data set that naturally controls for a number of market characteristics thought to contribute to inefficiency. I find that no-value assets traded persistently during the market upturn, in the early 2000s, suggesting limits to arbitrage. In the absence of inefficiency-causing market characteristics, the behavior of agents is likely the cause. To corroborate this claim, I create an investor confidence index using a ratio of sales to stressed sales and find that inefficiencies were present when investor confidence was high, supporting the idea of “irrational exuberance” on the part of traders.

Other diamondback subspecies feed on a variety of prey categories, with plants, gastropods, and bivalves being the most dominant, depending on the subspecies. For my thesis research, I examined the diet of M. terrapin tequesta from the Indian River Lagoon by analyzing 13 terrapin fecal samples. The remains of decapod crustaceans occurred in all 13 samples and made up 96.3% of the fecal mass; a small amount of vegetation, bivalves, gastropods, insects, and debris also occurred in many of the samples. This is the only study to find crustaceans to be the dominant food of a terrapin subspecies. This difference probably relates to preferred prey availability in mangrove habitats.

AMPH acts at the dopaminergic neurons through the dopamine transporter (DAT), and it leads to DAT-mediated efflux, resulting in an overall increase of dopamine (DA) in the synaptic cleft. It is known that exposure to AMPH may cause sensitization and/or tolerance. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying tolerance to AMPH are not yet well understood. Because DA has an inhibitory effect in C. elegans’ locomotion, the animals fail to sustain their normal swimming behavior when exposed to AMPH and paralyze within few minutes. This behavior, termed Swimming Induced Paralysis (SWIP), was used to test whether C. elegans develops sensitization and/or tolerance to AMPH. Our results show that repetitive exposures to AMPH reduced SWIP suggesting that C. elegans develops tolerance to AMPH after repeated exposures.

It is also prescribed to prevent cancer remission after surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. It is frequently used amongst women that have a high risk for breast cancer prior to diagnosis as a cancer preventative drug. Unfortunately, tamoxifen can cause damage to developing embryos if taken during pregnancy, and can lead to serious side effects, including endometrial cancer. The purpose of this work was to examine how tamoxifen induces uterine proliferation using an in vivo gene knockdown screen using shRNAmir viral technology. The shRNAmir library will identify epigenetic regulator proteins that associate with the estrogen receptor to stimulate uterine proliferative genes, allowing us to understand the extent at which tamoxifen leads to the development of cancerous cells.

This thesis explores the question of why it has not happened since and the factors that have halted every effort since 1986. The 1986 law did not clear the United States of immigration problems. While the law granted amnesty to over a million undocumented immigrants, there were millions more who were left in the shadows. So why has nothing happened since? The factors that led to success in 1986 have changed and so have the priorities of the two major parties. The efforts immediately following the 1986 law failed to find the kind of consensus that the 1986 law had, making future efforts more difficult. This thesis explores the factors that make comprehensive immigration reform difficult and argues that the factors aligned against immigration reform have only grown stronger since the 1986 law was passed.

This thesis explores linguistic behavior as a manifestation of collective consciousness via the incorporation of theory from psychology, sociology, and philosophy into an analytical framework for studying consciousness. Using this analytical framework, I present an analysis of patterns of linguistic behavior from online religious communitas on reddit.com. I analyze the patterns of linguistic behaviors in this data using tokenization and semantic analysis techniques, revealing the divergent manifestations of identity in each collective consciousness. Ultimately, I find a striking similarity between the language used across all the subreddits, but the differences between them validate the consideration of these as divergent interpretants of collective consciousness.

One such anarchist, Lysander Spooner, argues in “Vices are not Crimes” that vices should not be criminalized by the State. To do so, “deprive*s+ every man of his… liberty to pursue his own happiness.”1 I argue that Spooner’s essay lays the foundation for “lifestyle anarchism,” the doctrine that all the affairs of human beings within the domain of their lifestyle choices (provided they do not harm the person or property of another), should be managed by individuals or voluntary associations. One method of resistance against the criminalization of lifestyle choices is jury nullification: the ability of the jury to return a verdict of “not guilty” despite evidence of guilt. Spooner, in An Essay on the Trial by Jury, argues that nullification can be used to resist oppressive laws. I contend that lifestyle anarchists should support efforts by organizations such as the Fully Informed Jury Association to educate the public of their ability to practice jury nullification.

Furthermore, I highlight the eco-friendly and family involvement-based funeral rituals that the death positive community promotes and how these are changing the homogeneity of American funeral rituals. I will demonstrate how the death positive movement is providing ritual change to U.S. funeral rituals, moving past uniformity.
