Show moreField data from CO2 vents, a current model of future ocean acidification conditions, show a positive correlation between elevated seawater pCO2 and fleshy macroalgal abundance, as well as a negative correlation between elevated seawater pCO2 and calcareous macroalgal abundance on coral reefs. One underlying physiological mechanism for increases of fleshy macroalgae species in response to greater pCO2 could be an increase in their photosynthesis. Furthermore, inorganic carbon use mechanisms, irradiance and depth may influence species-specific responses to ocean acidification. Therefore, this thesis aimed to discern carbon use strategies and photosynthetic responses to elevated pCO2 of dominant tropical fleshy and calcareous macroalgae. All species studied were able to utilize HCO3 - for photosynthesis. 33% of calcifying macroalgae and 80% of fleshy macroalgae had increased photosynthetic rates in response to lower pH. Thus, future conditions of OA may perpetuate or exacerbate the abundance of fleshy seaweeds at the expense of calcareous species.

Show moreThe current study is a content analysis and comparison of news articles from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. The objective of this study is to explore media coverage of terrorism over the last five decades to determine the impact of religion and to compare coverage between two respected news sources that are known for their liberal (New York Times) and conservative (Wall Street Journal) view points. Using a stratified random sample, 1,832 news articles were selected between 1960 and 2006 from the two news sources of interest. The articles were read, analyzed, and categorized. Then, a qualitative analysis examined a random selection of articles pertaining to religious terrorist events. Results suggest an increase in coverage of religiously perpetrated terrorism in recent decades. Interestingly, coverage from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal showed similar patterns despite being representative of opposite ideologies. Implications are discussed.

The purpose of this thesis is to map Australian Pine (Casuarina equisetifolia with a 85% or greater accuracy by creating a methodology that uses LIDAR and color infrared ortho-photography and to test it within three different landscape types within Broward County. LIDAR features below a determined height threshold (i.e. Deerpoint 25 ft) were eliminated and recoded to 0 to create Mask 1. NDVI technique separated non-vegetative features from vegetative features to create Mask 2. Mask 1 and Mask 2 were merged and overlaid on the raw LIDAR data set to perform isodata clustering, as well as density slicing to identify mature Australian Pines. Careful delineation of study areas is critical to obtain the highest possible accuracy. Density slicing proved to be a faster and less time consuming technique for achieving 85% level of accuracy than compared to isodata clustering.

Through analysis of songs and interviews with composers, this dissertation investigates the relevance of speech inflection in the various styles of composition existing on Broadway. The main focus of musical theatre compositions, especially post Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical Oklahoma, is to move the plot along through songs. Therefore, the delivery of the text must be of ultimate consideration in the writing of modern musicals. A well-written speech-melody facilitates the process of a speech-melody-interpretation, which will result in the delivery of lyrics with an understandable, natural sounding quality. This investigation happens through a chronologic evaluation of the relevance of speech inflection during each of the distinct phases on Broadway, as well as an examination of the approach to writing with a speech-melody focus of each individual composer throughout history. This study explores the importance of speech inflection in American musical theatre songwriting focusing on a speech-melody approach to composition.

Criminals and other bad actors constantly seek to exploit these web properties through web attacks. Being able to properly detect these web attacks is a crucial component in the overall cybersecurity landscape. Machine learning is one tool that can assist in detecting web attacks. However, properly using machine learning to detect web attacks does not come without its challenges. Classification algorithms can have difficulty with severe levels of class imbalance. Class imbalance occurs when one class label disproportionately outnumbers another class label. For example, in cybersecurity, it is common for the negative (normal) label to severely outnumber the positive (attack) label. Another difficulty encountered in machine learning is models can be complex, thus making it difficult for even subject matter experts to truly understand a model’s detection process. Moreover, it is important for practitioners to determine which input features to include or exclude in their models for optimal detection performance. This dissertation studies machine learning algorithms in detecting web attacks with big data. Severe class imbalance is a common problem in cybersecurity, and mainstream machine learning research does not sufficiently consider this with web attacks. Our research first investigates the problems associated with severe class imbalance and rarity. Rarity is an extreme form of class imbalance where the positive class suffers extremely low positive class count, thus making it difficult for the classifiers to discriminate. In reducing imbalance, we demonstrate random undersampling can effectively mitigate the class imbalance and rarity problems associated with web attacks. Furthermore, our research introduces a novel feature popularity technique which produces easier to understand models by only including the fewer, most popular features. Feature popularity granted us new insights into the web attack detection process, even though we had already intensely studied it. Even so, we proceed cautiously in selecting the best input features, as we determined that the “most important” Destination Port feature might be contaminated by lopsided traffic distributions.

The minimum volume ellipsoid, containing all points, is constructed. The ellipsoidal models of uncertainty, pertinent to earthquake excitation, are developed. The maximum response of a structure, subjected to the earthquake excitation, within ellipsoidal modeling of the latter, is determined. This procedure of determining least favorable response was termed in the literature (Elishakoff, 1991) as an antioptimization. It appears that under inherent uncertainty of earthquake excitation, antioptimization analysis is a viable alternative to stochastic approach.

These deposits exhibit diverse assemblages of planktonic microfossils and contribute significantly to the overall sediment supply and function of Florida’s deep-water regions. However, the composition and distribution of biogenic sediment deposits along these regions remains poorly documented. Seafloor surface sediments have been collected in situ via Johnson- Sea-Link I submersible along four of Florida’s deep-water regions during a joint research cruise between Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Sedimentological analyses of the taxonomy, species diversity, and sedimentation dynamics reveal a complex interconnected development system of Florida’s deep-water habitats. Results disclose characteristic microfossil assemblages of planktonic foraminiferal ooze off the South West Florida Shelf, a foraminiferal-pteropod ooze through the Straits of Florida, and pteropod ooze deposits off Florida’s east coast. The distribution of the biogenic ooze deposits is attributed to factors such as oceanographic surface production, surface and bottom currents, off-bank transport, and deep-water sediment drifts. The application of micropaleontology, sedimentology, and oceanography facilitate in characterizing the sediment supply to Florida’s deep-water regions.

Show moreLevels of self-directed learning readiness, strategic thinking and leader effectiveness in nonprofit directors were obtained from a sample of YMCA directors who responded to an online survey. The resulting data were analyzed to determine if correlations between the measures were observed and if the relationships were moderated by employment, geographic or demographic variables. Self-directed learning readiness and strategic thinking were highly correlated. Analysis of the questionnaires from 471 respondents demonstrated that the correlations between self-directed learning readiness and strategic thinking were robust (r = .58, p < .001 ). Leader effectiveness was found to correlate with these two constructs at identical and significant levels (r = .1 0, p < .05). These correlations present evidence of positive relationships between self-directed learning levels, strategic thinking levels and leader effectiveness. Correlations were also found for self-directed learning readiness and each of the three subscales of strategic thinking, reframing, reflecting and systems thinking, and the leader effectiveness measure; and for the reframing subscale of strategic thinking with leader effectiveness. Responses to open-ended questions reflected the use of self-directed learning strategies and strategic thinking by the sample in preparing for challenges in education and leadership. Correlations between strategic thinking and leader effectiveness were moderated by ethnicity. Levels of correlation between self-directed learning readiness and strategic thinking were moderated by the variables of years of AYP membership and number of branches supervised, the level of performance rating desired, and years of similar employment. The YMCA directors in this study were determined to be effective leaders who used strategic thinking and self-directed learning strategies to meet the demands of their leadership roles. The results indicate that individuals who exhibit self-directed learning tendencies can be expected to use strategic thinking strategies; that those who are strategic thinkers reflect self-directed learning behavior; and that leader effectiveness is supported by the possession of strategic thinking and selfdirected learning skills.

Show moreMatrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) constitute the major class of enzymes capable of degrading all protein components of extracellular matrix (ECM) and have important roles in normal physiologic processes of maintaining tissue integrity and remodeling. However, excess MMP activities are associated with many diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, cardiomyopathy, and macular degeneration. The activity of MMPs is regulated by their endogenous protein inhibitors, the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) which are avid broad-spectrum inhibitors of numerous human matrixins (MMPs and ADAMs). Uncontrolled matrix degradation occurs when the balance between TIMPs and MMPs is disrupted, resulting in serious diseases such as cancer, arthritis and chronic tissue ulcers. Thus, the engineering of TIMPs to produce highly selective and efficacious inhibitors of individual MMPs may be utilized for future treatment of diseases. Such engineering requires detailed analysis for the structural and biophysical information of MMP-TIMP interaction. Changes in the dynamics of proteins and solvent that accompany their associations with different binding partners, influence the specificity of binding through entropic effects. From the current studies it appears that the interactions of the inhibitory domains of TIMPs-1 and -2 (N-TIMPs) with MT1-MMP are driven by entropy increases that are partitioned between solvent and conformational entropy (ΔSsolv and ΔSconf), and a large conformational entropy penalty is responsible for the weak inhibition of MT1-MMP by NT1.We investigated how mutations that modify N-TIMP selectivity affect the thermodynamics of interactions with MMP1, MMP3 and MT1-MMP. The weak inhibition of MT1-MMP by N-TIMP-1 is enhanced by mutation of threonine 98, on the edge of the binding ridge, to leucine. This mutation increases the large ΔSconf cost for binding to MT1-MMP but this is offset by a greater increase in ΔSsolv. In contrast, this mutation enhances binding to MMP3 by increasing ΔSconf for the interaction. ΔSsolv and ΔSconf show mutual compensation for all interactions, with characteristic ranges for each MMP. Distinct electrostatic and dynamic features of MMPs are key factors in their selective inhibition.

Show moreIn order to keep up with the high demand for biologically active molecules, chemists devised several synthetic strategies to access novel chemical spaces. The two main strategies to construct new scaffolds are to revisit underexploited or forgotten reactions or to devise new transformations. We are exploring a unique and underexploited reaction, the Himbert–Henn cycloaddition, to produce complex molecular scaffolds in a single step (strategy 1). In a second novel approach, we are modifying the Hantzsch 4-component reaction (4CR) by incorporating an α-amino ester residue to construct new molecules (strategy 2). Both of these reactions have great potential to synthesize novel and chiral molecules from proteinogenic α-amino esters. These unprecedented and complex polycyclic molecules have potential application in medicinal chemistry and natural product synthesis. 4-aza-podophyllotoxins obtained by the Hantzsch-4CR have been proven to be potent as anti-leukemia, anti-colon cancer, and vascular disrupting agents (with nanomolar activity).
