Bio fuels provide a way to produce fuels without redesigning any of the engine technology present today, yet allowing for green house emissions to decrease. Bio-diesel is one of these types of emerging bio-fuels, which has an immediate alternative fuel aspect to it, while providing a decrease in green house emissions, as well as a solution to recycling used Waste Vegetable Oils which are other wise disposed. This study shows how by blending bio-diesel with petroleum diesel at intervals of B5, B10, B15, and B20 decrease green house emissions can significantly while maintaining similar performance output and efficiency with respect to 100% petroleum diesel.

Cylinder and rectangular prism concrete specimens were used in the experiments exposed in a high moisture room, laboratory room temperature, high humidity and outdoor weather environments. Single rebar and four rebar specimens were used to study the rebar effect on the apparent resistivity. Modeling analysis was employed to verify and explain the experimental results. Based on the results, concrete with fly ash showed higher resistivity than concrete with just ordinary Portland cement. Rebar presence had a significant effect on the measured apparent resistivity at some of the locations. The results could be used as a guide for field apparent resistivity measurements and provide a quick, more precise and easy way to estimate the concrete quality.

Show moreThe primary objective of this research is the development a wind and solar-powered autonomous surface vehicle (WASP) for oceanographic measurements. This thesis presents the general design scheme, detailed aerodynamic and hydrodynamic aspects, sailing performance theory, and dynamic performance validation measurements obtained from a series of experiments. The WASP consists of a 4.2 meter long sailboat hull, a low-Reynolds number composite wing, a 2000 Watt-hour battery reservoir, a system of control actuators, a control system running on an embedded microprocessor, a suite of oceanographic sensors, and power regeneration from solar energy. The vehicle has a maximum speed of five knots and weighs approximately 350 kilograms. Results from four oceanographic missions that were conducted in the Port Everglades Intracoastal Waterway in Dania Beach [sic] Florida are presented. Water temperature, salinity and oxidation-reduction measurements recorded during these missions are also discussed. The combination of a mono-hull and solid wing in an autonomous system is a viable design for a long-range ocean observation platform. The results of four near-shore ocean observation missions illustrate the initial capabilities of the design. Future work aimed to further reduce both the mass of the wing design and the power requirements of the system will increase performance in all operating conditions and should be considered. Furthermore, the progression of the legal framework related to ocean vehicles must be pursued with respect to unmanned autonomous systems.

Show moreThis research focuses on carbon fiber treatment by nitric acid and 3- (trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate silane, and how this affects carbon/vinyl ester composites. These composites offer great benefits, but it is difficult to bond the fiber and matrix together, and without a strong interfacial bond, composites fall short of their potential. Silanes work well with glass fiber, but do not bond directly to carbon fiber because its surface is not reactive to liquid silanes. Oxidizing surface treatments are often prescribed for improved wetting and bonding to carbon, but good results are not always achieved. Furthermore, there is the unanswered question of environmental durability. This research aimed to form a better understanding of oxidizing carbon fiber treatments, determine if silanes can be bonded to oxidized surfaces, and how these treatments affect composite strength and durability before and after seawater exposure. Nitric acid treatments on carbon fibers were found to improve their tensile strength to a constant level by smoothing surface defects and chemically modifying their surfaces by increasing carbonyl and carboxylic acid concentrations. Increasing these surface group concentrations raises fiber polar energy and causes them to cohere. This impedes wetting, resulting in poor quality, high void content composites, even though there appeared to be improved adhesion between the fibers and matrix. Silane was found to bond to the oxidized carbon fiber surfaces, as evidenced by changes in both fiber and composite properties. The fibers exhibited low polarity and cohesion, while the composites displayed excellent resin wetting, low void content, and low seawater weight gain and swelling. On the contrary, the oxidized fibers that were not treated with silane exhibited high polarity and fiber cohesion., Their composites displayed poor wetting, high void content, high seawater weight gain, and low swelling. Both fiber treatment types resulted in great improvements in dry transverse tensile strength over the untreated fibers, but the oxidized fiber composites lost strength as the acid treatment time was extended, due to poor wetting. The acid/silane treated composites lost some transverse tensile strength after seawater exposure, but the nitric acid oxidized fiber composites appeared to be more seawater durable.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mechanical properties on total restoration, based on the manufacturer's technical specifications, experimental and mechanical test results. The optimal dentist's selection will be when the most appropriate adhesive can be chosen for one specific restoration, avoiding wasted time, material and exposure to marginal infections with a failure restoration. This research was developed in stages. The first step is the study of the tooth morphological information. Following, there is the structure identification type and the chemical composition of six different pure adhesives. Next, perform the X-R Diffraction, Energy Disperse Spectroscopy (EDS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The final step is to perform the mechanical test, computer simulation, and discuss the results to obtain the best dental adhesive with and the new finding. Result: The samples show an amorphous structure and a chemical composition in the X-R Diffraction, SEM and EDS experiments. The mechanical test shows real mechanical properties under tension and sheer rupture stress. Poisson ratio, strain, and another relationship will be used in the computer simulation test. Results will be reflected in the Discussion and Conclusion. Significance: The first conclusion is that the amorphous structure is present in all six adhesives experiments. In addition, it shows strong possibilities of bonding with another neighbor's molecules. The discussion will be extended to the bonding advantages for this type of structure in the total dental restoration., Findings: First, we found that the time delay of photo polymerization was controlled with the variable water evaporation of the etching treatment. In addition, it was found that the variable size of the wavelength of the curing light obtained better molecular organization and avoided internal stress and bonding defect. Lastly, the chemical composition was a variable that provided the opportunity to predict the type of bond and strength.

To validate the use of the CFD model, the simulation results of the CFD model were compared to the experimental data and they show an agreement with the experimental data. The second objective was to present parametric studies to show the effects of the coflow speed, turbulence intensity and agent droplet size on the transport and dispersion of the agent particles downstream from the clutter elements.

Approximate solutions are found by using Bubnov-Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin methods. For the first time explicit expressions are obtained for the natural frequencies of double and triple-walled carbon nanotubes for different combinations of boundary conditions. Comparison of the results with recent studies shows that the above methods constitute quick and effective alternative techniques to exact solution for studying the vibration properties of carbon nanotubes. The natural frequencies of the clamped-clamped double-walled carbon nanotubes are obtained; exact solution is provided and compared with the solution reported in the literature. In contrast to earlier investigation, an analytical criterion is derived to establish the behavior of the roots of the characteristic equation. Approximate Bubnov-Galerkin solution is also obtained to compare natural frequencies at the lower end of the spectrum. Simplified version of the Bresse-Timoshenko theory that incorporates the shear deformation and the rotary inertia is proposed for free vibration study of double-walled carbon nanotubes. It is demonstrated that the suggested set yields extremely accurate results for the lower spectrum of double-walled carbon nanotube. The natural frequencies of double-walled carbon nanotubes based on simplified versions of Donnell shell theory are also obtained. The buckling behavior of the double-walled carbon nanotubes under various boundary conditions is studied. First, the case of the simply supported double-walled carbon nanotubes at both ends is considered which is amenable to exact solution., Then, approximate methods of Bubnov-Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin are utilized to check the efficacy of these approximations for the simply supported double-walled carbon nanotubes. Once the extreme accuracy is demonstrated for simply supported conditions, the approximate techniques are applied to two other cases of the boundary conditions, namely to clamped-clamped and simply supported-clamped double-walled carbon nanotubes. For the first time in the literature approximate expression for the buckling loads are reported for these boundary conditions. The dynamic deflection of a single-walled carbon nanotube under impact loading is analyzed by following a recently study reported on the energy absorption capacity of carbon nanotubes under ballistic impact.

The current procedure deviates from the traditional shear thickening fluid (STF) route and instead uses silane (amino-propyl-trimethoxy silane) as the base polymer. In addition, a cross-linking fixative such as Glutaraldehyde (Gluta) is added to the polymer to create bridges between distant pairs of amine groups present in Kevlar and silated nanoparticles. Water, silane, nanoparticles and Gluta are mixed using a homogenizer and an ultra-sonochemical technique. Subsequently, the admixture is impregnated with Kevlar - bypassing the heating and evaporating processes involved with STF. The resulting composites have shown remarkable improvement in spike resistance; at least one order higher than that of STF/Kevlar composites. The source of improvement has been traced to the formation of secondary amine C-N stretch due to the presence of Gluta.

Show moreIn an effort to obtain an improved mode III fracture toughness test suitable for a testing standard, mechanics analysis, experimental testing, and finite element analysis (FEA) have been conducted. Of particular concern are the merits of one-point and two-point edge crack torsion (ECT) test methods, the influence of specimen geometry that overhangs beyond load/support points, and the influence of crack length on the compliance and energy release rate. Shear stress distributions at the crack front are determined to examine the uniformity of mode III loading and mode II influence. The shear stress distributions in the one-point and two-point tests are virtually identical, indicating that either of the two tests could be used interchangeably. Based on the uniformity of the mode III shear stress distribution along the crack front, it was found that the ECT specimen should have minimum overhang. Longer crack lengths tend to produce nonuniform shear stress distributions. A modified two-point ECT test fixture was developed to allow testing of specimens with a range of dimensions. This development enabled experimental verification of the results from the FEA overhang series. The specimens with a minimum overhang produced consistant mode III toughness data. The most reliable way to reduce data is through the original compliance calibration method. A modified ECT specimen was developed with a staggered crack front to produce uniform mode III crack growth. Finite element analysis of the modified ECT specimen shows a uniform mode III stress distribution along the crack front with little mode II interaction.

Show moreAcoustic networks of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) show great promise, but a lack of simulation tools and reliance on protocols originally developed for terrestrial radio networks has hindered progress. This work addresses both issues. A new simulator of underwater communication among AUVs provides accurate communication modeling and flexible vehicle behavior, while a new routing protocol, location-aware source routing (LASR) provides superior network performance. The new simulator was used to evaluate communication without networking, and then with networking using the coding or dynamic source routing (DSR) protocols. The results confirmed that a network was essential to ensure effective fleet-wide communication. The flooding protocol provided extremely reliable communication but with low message volumes. The DSR protocol, a popular routing protocol due to its effectiveness in terrestrial radio networks, proved to be a bad choice in an acoustic environment: in most cases, it suffered from both poor reliability and low message volumes. Due to the high acoustic latency, even moderate vehicle speeds caused the network topology to change faster than DSR could adapt. DSR's reliance on shortest-path routing also proved to be a significant disadvantage. Several DSR optimizations were also tested; most proved to be unhelpful or actually harmful in an underwater acoustic network. LASR was developed to address the problems noted in flooding and DSR. LASR was loosely derived from DSR, most significantly retaining source routes and the reply/request route discovery technique. However, LASR added features which proved, in simulation, to be significant advantages -- two of the most effective were a link/route metric and a node tracking system. To replace shortest-path routing, LASR used the expected transmission count (ETX) metric., This allowed LASR to make more informed routing decisions which greatly increased performance compared to DSR. The node tracking system was the most novel addition: using only implicit communication coupled with the use of time-division multiple access (TDMA), the tracking system provided predicted node locations. These predictions made it possible for LASR to proactively respond to topology changes. In most cases, LASR outperformed flooding and DSR in message delivery reliability and message delivery volume.

Show moreThe goal of this thesis is to develop a test platform for measuring surface effect ship (SES) response to wave loads. The platform is designed and built incorporating a self-propelled vehicle with data acquisition and navigation capabilities. Theoretical analysis is performed, various hardware and electronic parts are designed and built and software applications developed. Wave tank experiments are conducted for test platform evaluation and determination of vehicle response to a range of wave conditions. Furthermore, a three-dimensional model of the AIRCAT scale model SES is created. The theoretical analysis shows that the scale effects in some cases are great, so resonance phenomena cannot be observed. The experimental results clearly show that the heave, pitch and aircushion excess pressure fluctuations increase as the air-blower input level increases. The bow skirt arrangement needs improvements and further experimentation is necessary in order to draw conclusions about the wave loads applied on the skirt.

Show moreControlling the cooperative behaviors of a fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles in a stochastic, complex environment is a formidable challenge in artificial intelligence. The complexity arises from the challenges of limited navigation and communication capabilities of underwater environment. A time critical cooperative operation by acoustic networks of Multiple Cooperative Vehicles (MCVs) necessitates a robust task allocation mechanism and an efficient path planning model. In this work, we present solutions to investigate two aspects of the cooperative schema for multiple underwater vehicles under realistic underwater acoustic communications: a Location-aided Task Allocation Framework (LAAF) algorithm for multi-target task assignment and a mathematical programming model, the Grid-based Multi-Objective Optimal Programming (GMOOP), for finding an optimal vehicle command decision given a set of objectives and constraints. We demonstrate that, the location-aided auction strategies perform significantly better than the generic auction algorithm in terms of effective task allocation time and information bandwidth requirements. In a typical task assignment scenario, the time needed in the LAAF algorithm is only a fraction compared to the generic auction algorithm. On the other hand; the GMOOP path planning technique provides a unique means for multi-objective tasks by cooperative agents with limited communication capabilities. Under different environmental settings, the GMOOP path planning technique is proved to provide a method with balance of sufficient expressive power and flexibility, and its solution algorithms tractable in terms of mission completion time, with a limited increase of overhead in acoustic communication. Prior to this work, existing multi-objective action selection methods were limited to robust networks where constant communication available., The dynamic task allocation, together with the GMOOP path planning controller, provides a comprehensive solution to the search-classify tasks for cooperative AUVs.

This work investigates the differences between a "channel" region and a "no channel" region based on an inferred stratigraphic model. Inversions were performed on data from a single buoy both at individual frequencies and multiple frequencies simultaneously. Since the use of multiple frequencies and a certain set of constraints proved to be an effective method of inversion, the method was applied to data from the other three buoys as well. It is shown that the "channel" and "no channel" regions have significantly different sound speed profiles.

The scarcity of available systematic test data has made reliable performance prediction difficult. The primary objective of this research is to obtain experimental performance prediction data that can be used in SPP design. In a series of open water tests in a non-pressurized towing tank facility, force transducer measurements were taken at tip immersion ratios from 0.5 to .33, yaw angles from 0° to 30° and inclination angles from 0° to 15° over a range of advance ratios from 0.8 to 1.8. Force transducer measurements were taken for thrust, torque, side forces and moments. These results will help develop a baseline for the verification of SPP performance prediction.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was explored as a new application of an existing technique for use in measuring the amount of water at the F/M interface in carbon fiber/vinylester composites. EIS spectra were used to determine equivalent electric circuit models that allow for the prediction of water at the interface. The location of water within the composite was determined through Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS). Interlaminar shear strength and transverse tensile tests were carried out for dry conditions and after hygrothermal exposure of the composites to study the influence of the integrity of the F/M interface on the macroscopic response of the composite.

This research presents the design of the turbo coding scheme and its implementation in the IFAM modem with the purpose of meeting a strict requirement for the IFAM error rate performance. To simulate the coded IFAM, a channel simulator is developed. It is basically a multi-tap filter whose parameters are set depending on the channel geometry and system specifics. The simulation results show that the turbo code is able to correct 89% of the messages received with errors in the hostile channel conditions. The Bose-Chadhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) coding scheme corrects less that 15% of these messages. The other simulation results obtained for the system operation in different shallow water settings are presented.

Show moreThis thesis presents the analytically predicted position, motion, attitude, power output and forces on Florida Atlantic University's (FAU) first generation ocean current turbine for a wide range of operating conditions. These values are calculated using a 7- DOF dynamics simulation of the turbine and the cable that attaches it to the mooring system. The numerical simulation modifications and upgrades completed in this work include developing a wave model including the effects of waves into the simulation, upgrading the rotor model to specify the number of blades and upgrading the cable model to specify the number of cable elements. This enhanced simulation is used to quantify the turbine's performance in a wide range of currents, wave fields and when stopping and starting the rotor. For a uniform steady current this simulation predicts that when the rotor is fixed in 1.5 m/s current the drag on the turbine is 3.0 kN, the torque on the rotor is 384 N-m, the turbine roll and pitch are 2.4º and -1.2º . When the rotor is allowed to spin up to the rotational velocity where the turbine produces maximum power, the turbine drag increases to 7.3 kN, the torque increases to 1482 N-m, the shaft power is 5.8 kW, the turbine roll increases to 9º and the turbine pitch stays constant. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis is done to evaluate changes in turbine performance caused by changes in turbine design and operation. This analysis show, among other things, that a non-axial flow on the turbine of up to 10º has a minimal effect on net power output and that the vertical stable position of the turbine varies linearly with the weight/buoyancy of the turbine with a maximum variation of 1.77 m for each increase or decrease of 1 kg at a current speed of 0.5 m/s.

The blade is of sandwich construction with carbon fiber skin and high density foam core. It also contains two webs made of S2-glass for added shear rigidity. Four design cases were analyzed, involving differences in hydrodynamic shape, material properties, and internal structure. Results from the linear static structural analysis revealed that the best design provides adequate stiffness and strength to produce the proposed power without any structural failure. An Eigenvalue Buckling analysis confirmed that the blade would not fail from buckling prior to overstressed laminate failure if the loading was to exceed the Safety Factor.
