Show morenovel approach to extend the decision-making capabilities of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) is presented in this work. A multi-objective framework is described where separate controllers command different behaviors according to a desired trajectory. Three behaviors are examined – transiting, station-keeping and reversing. Given the desired trajectory, the vehicle is able to autonomously recognize which behavior best suits a portion of the trajectory. The USV uses a combination of a supervisory switching control structure and a reinforcement learning algorithm to create a hybrid deliberative and reactive approach to switch between controllers and actions. Reinforcement learning provides a deliberative method to create a controller switching policy, while supervisory switching control acts reactively to instantaneous changes in the environment. Each action is restricted to one controller. Due to the nonlinear effects in these behaviors, two underactuated backstepping controllers and a fully-actuated backstepping controller are proposed for each transiting, reversing and station-keeping behavior, respectively, restricted to three degrees of freedom. Field experiments are presented to validate this system on the water with a physical USV platform under Sea State 1 conditions. Main outcomes of this work are that the proposed system provides better performance than a comparable gain-scheduled nonlinear controller in terms of an Integral of Absolute Error metric. Additionally, the deliberative component allows the system to identify dynamically infeasible trajectories and properly accommodate them.

Show moreAt the turn of the new millennium, the focus of Information Technology Management turned to Information and Systems Security, as opposed to competitive advantage investment. In catering to the security needs of various firms and institutions, it is seen that different entities require varying Information Security configurations. This thesis attempts to utilize Risk Analysis, a commonly used procedure in business realms, to formulate customized Firewalls based on the specific needs of a network, subsequently building an effective system following the "Defense in Depth" strategy. This is done by first choosing an efficient Risk Analysis model which suits the process of creating Firewall policies, and then applying it to a particular case study. A network within Florida Atlantic University is used as an experimental test case, and by analyzing the traffic to which it is subject while behind a single Firewall layer, a specific Security Policy is arrived at and implemented.

Show moreIn only 3 decades, obesity has evolved to a leading cause of morbidity and premature mortality in the United States (US) and worldwide (Kotsis et al., 2018). The rise in the prevalence of obesity has been accompanied by a rise in the prevalence of diabetes and nearly 90% of newly diagnosed patients were overweight (Rossouw, 2015). Most guidelines recommend promoting weight loss among overweight or obese individuals by reducing energy intake together with a healthy eating pattern that focuses on a diet composed of whole or unprocessed foods combined with physical activity and ongoing support (Forouhi et al., 2018). Research also show that behavioral interventions for obesity involving face to face meetings in group sessions typically result in weight loss. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to initiate a practice improvement project through information dissemination using visual displays for healthy eating to improve knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions/practices toward proper nutrition that will ultimately support weight loss and diabetes control. The project was implemented at a federally qualified health center that caters to the underserved population of Okeechobee, FL. The program was led by a prospective doctoral candidate and involved group-based sessions, interactive teaching focused on dietary modification, and offered social networking and social support. Outcomes included improvement in anthropometric measurements, significant Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception (KAP) survey difference scores, and the ability to create or demonstrate a meal plan that suits preferences and reflects individual total daily caloric requirement.

Show moreThe need that prompted this study was the educational officials' lack of exposure to changes in the libel law concerning their rights as educators and their newly defined classification as public officials. This classification creates the primary need for the study. Educational officials must prove actual malice when seeking libel suits. The purpose of the study was to historically investigate the present vulnerability of educational officials to the press. This vulnerability has been created by the Supreme Court decisions since 1964. The New York Times Company , Inc. vs. Sullivan landmark national libel standard creating actual malice as the criterion for civil suit by a public official, set the pivotal point as a demarcation from the past to the present in the legal cases concerning defamation. This study researched the law of the past to the present to set the background to develop the manner by which legal research may be accomplished by the educator. The major conclusion of the paper is the need for a fairness doctrine for press coverage, the equal of the fairness doctrine of the radio and television. The paper supports the contention that the newspaper is a major industry in a protected status without the restrictions of a fairness doctrine not only for the public official, but for the private citizen. Even though the private citizen need not prove actual malice, as does the public official, he does not have the right to fair reply in the newspaper as he does on the radio and television. This in itself is a modern logical anachronism in the law. How can other forms of the media be open while the press is closed to public response? Another conclusion of the study is the need for the present-day educational official to be able to do preliminary legal research in educational problems. The research in libel is but an example of the manner in which a professional educator should be trained. Simply stated , the modern educator training centers must place more emphasis on the legal training of educational officials .

Three original suites, composed during 2008-2009, are presented and discussed with respect to form, style, and compositional techniques. The subjects are Suite No. 1 (clarinet and piano), Suite No. 2: For Paul, A Master of Music (clarinet, piano, double bass and drums), and Suite No. 3: L'Chaim (two clarinets, flugelhorn, French horn, bandoneon, piano, violin, and cello). Common to all three pieces is the inspiration of klezmer, a Jewish music genre that, during its reemergence over the past thirty-five years, has welcomed the influence of other musical styles. In keeping with the eclectic nature of klezmer, each suite builds upon the previous one with regard to instrumentation, style and technique, and embraces additional genres (jazz and tango). Brief reviews regarding the history and musical characteristics (including modes, ornamentation and improvisation, song types and instrumentation) for all the included genres are also presented for the benefit of compositional context.

Show moreOne of the areas in the field of instrumental instruction which has a pressing need for additional material is that of advanced literature for the interested saxophonist. The purpose of this composition was to explore the problems involved in composing and orchestrating an original suite for a saxophone quintet. The musical form of the suite was chosen since a form of many separate, yet harmonically linked, movements would bring out the greatest number of possible problems including style, orchestration, form, registers, function, characteristics of instruments, key consideration, tempos, change of meter, rhythmic devices, accompaniments, solos, voicings, and harmonic devices. The composition about to be discussed was written for five saxophones: two E flat alto saxophones, two B flat tenor saxophones, and one E flat baritone saxophone. The four movements of the suite are entitled: Allemande--written in 4/4 time, requiring a performance time of approximately 2:40 minutes. Courante--written in 3/4 time, requiring a performance time of approximately 2:30 minutes. Sarabande--written in 3/4 time, requiring a performance time of approximately 2:30 minutes. La Fine--written in 4/4 time, requiring a performance time of approximately 2:20 minutes. It is hoped that this suite will be a definite contribution to the saxophone literature. The instrumentalist who performs this suite will find very few dynamic marks, and, in some cases different phrasing may be used, thus allowing the performer more liberty and freedom of choice.

Show moreOf all the areas in band literature, the most gratifying and challenging for the composer and orchestrator is found at the senior high school band level. At the present time there is an acute need for adequate material at this level. This condition exists primarily because of the following: (1) arranging perplexities due to lack of technical skills and lack of experience of high school band members, (2) uncertain standardized band instrumentation, (3) the neglect of publishers to meet their responsibilities, (4) the inability of composers and arrangers to write specifically for the senior high school band, and (5) the relative youth of the band movement as an adjunct to our culture. In orchestrating any original work, the scorer must recognize the many problems associated with a standardized instrumentation, the registers, functions of instrumental voices, key considerations, accompaniments, solos, and notation trends. In composing original material at the senior high school level, the composer must be aware of instrument ranges, writing technique, interpretation, and intonation problems of the band members; individually and within the section. Of utmost importance is the composer's entire knowledge and application of the forms in which he is writing. It is the sincere hope of this composer that this material may urge other composers to specialize in particular areas and levels of writing and furnish guidelines in study material for those who may discover similar problems in their endeavors.
