Show moreDigital Public History: Virtual Field Trips (VFTs) as Engaged Learning addresses new opportunities and challenges in teaching with technology, specifically, capturing the attention of the emerging "cyber-literate" generation by using virtual field trips to directly engage learners in public history and community memory. The project will consist of three parts: an assessment of the opportunities for technology integration in teaching and learning, the connection between digital resources and social studies, and case study of a virtual field trip using the Boca Raton Army Airfield (BRAAF) site. Our view of the past is influenced by the media, religious upbringing, monuments, memorials, and cultural influences such as family and school. History and social studies classes are where most young people learn about the collective, public past. Virtual field trips (VFTs) are an ideal way to transport students back in time to learn about different communities and to experience the history of the people and place in thought-provoking ways. VFTs can introduce learners to primary materials that are too far away or too fragile to examine. History can be brought to life with first-person narratives that "virtual travelers" can watch via streaming video technology. Activities such as scavenger hunts for specific objects using maps and 30 virtual environments can be incorporated into virtual adventures so visitors can move around and "walk" through a room or landscape. Hand-held computers, cell phones, and tablet computers are being used with wireless networking to connect participants in geographically diverse locations. Classes in different schools and even in different countries can work collaboratively on projects. There are many advantages to taking , designing, and developing virtual field trips, however, the two reasons I chose to use a virtual field trip as a method of engaging students in history and social studies are: (1) History is more engaging when presented in an interactive, multimedia experience; and (2) Virtual field trips can be used to build relationships between generations and cultures. The ways students are taught must engage them in a journey of selfdiscovery in order for them to become self-directed, lifelong learners.

Feminist critics have primarily concentrated on the character of Zenobia, Nathaniel Hawthorne's premier feminist in The Blithedale Romance, to unravel Hawthorne's stance on the emergent sexual politics of the time. This thesis not only examines the importance of Zenobia but also analyzes the significance of Hawthorne's allusions to gender and sexuality constructs in terms of his other characters: Coverdale, Hollingsworth, Priscilla, Westervelt, and Moodie. In addition, I argue that Hawthorne's purpose is to experiment with societal constructs of gender and sexuality among his central characters, a literary experiment that inadvertently subverts his ostensible traditional, patriarchal perspective. In essence, my reading aims to reorientate the conventional presuppositions and gender conventions that have dominated Hawthorne criticism for the past 150 years.

This dissertation was designed to study the relative efficacy of the 1948 standardization of the Leiter International Performance Scale, the 1975 standardization of the Leiter International Performance Scale, and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence for placing children in the gifted range of intellectual functioning. In addition, this dissertation addressed the relationship of a preschool screening instrument, the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning with the 1948 standardization of the Leiter International Performance Scale, the 1975 standardization of the Leiter International Performance Scale, and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Results. The results indicated that there was a significant difference in the number of white children and black children placed into gifted classes, based upon the WPPSI and LIPS. Inspite of the fact that both white children and black children scored both higher and lower on the LIPS than the WPPSI statistically, based upon observed and predicted frequencies, the WPPSI did favor the white children in terms of gifted placement. There was no significant difference between the number of white children and black children placed in gifted classes based upon the LIPS. Discriminant root analysis corroborated these findings by statistically indicating the discriminant roots inherent in the WPPSI for the black children in this study. These discriminant roots were the following six subtests: Information; Vocabulary; Arithmetic; Comprehension; Mazes and Block Design. In addition, a multiple regression analysis corroborated that the 1948 LIPS is statistically nondiscriminatory by revealing that race was not a significant predictor of the 1948 LIPS IQ score.

Successful implementation of monetary policy by a European central bank would require the existence of a stable relationship between the quantity of money demanded and other macro-variables. This thesis examines the issues and controversies arising from the movement towards European Monetary Union as envisaged by the Maastricht treaty. The theoretical basis of the estimation of dynamic money demand relationships is presented, and a dynamic error-correction model of a nine-country aggregate money demand function is estimated.

Research has shown that women are reluctant to act as or perceive themselves as leaders over men (Eagly & Karau, 1991, Snodgrass & Rosenthal, 1984). Other research has shown how expectations about behavior can elicit such behavior (Rosenthal & Rubin, 1978). This thesis combines these two bodies of research in an attempt to create an environment where women emerge as leaders over men. Mixed- and same-sex dyads were given bogus leadership expectancies, and then interacted in a team task. Leadership performance, perceptions, and predictions were measured after the task. It was hypothesized and found that expectancies can overcome sex role stereotypes regarding leadership.

To improve understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within Demospongiae, we sequenced and analyzed seven nuclear housekeeping genes involved in a variety of cellular functions from a diverse group of sponges. Methodology/Principal Findings: We generated data from each of the four sponge classes (i.e., Calcarea, Demospongiae, Hexactinellida, and Homoscleromorpha), but focused on family-level relationships within demosponges. With data for 21 newly sampled families, our Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian-based approaches recovered previously phylogenetically defined taxa: Keratosap, Myxospongiaep, Spongillidap, Haploscleromorphap (the marine haplosclerids) and Democlaviap. We found conflicting results concerning the relationships of Keratosap and Myxospongiaep to the remaining demosponges, but our results strongly supported a clade of Haploscleromorphap+Spongillidap+Democlaviap. In contrast to hypotheses based on mitochondrial genome and ribosomal data, nuclear housekeeping gene data suggested that freshwater sponges (Spongillidap) are sister to Haploscleromorphap rather than part of Democlaviap. Within Keratosap, we found equivocal results as to the monophyly of Dictyoceratida. Within Myxospongiaep, Chondrosida and Verongida were monophyletic. A wellsupported clade within Democlaviap, Tetractinellidap, composed of all sampled members of Astrophorina and Spirophorina (including the only lithistid in our analysis), was consistently revealed as the sister group to all other members of Democlaviap. Within Tetractinellidap, we did not recover monophyletic Astrophorina or Spirophorina. Our results also reaffirmed the monophyly of order Poecilosclerida (excluding Desmacellidae and Raspailiidae), and polyphyly of Hadromerida and Halichondrida. Conclusions/Significance: These results, using an independent nuclear gene set, confirmed many hypotheses based on ribosomal and/or mitochondrial genes, and they also identified clades with low statistical support or clades that conflicted with traditional morphological classification. Our results will serve as a basis for future exploration of these outstanding questions using more taxon- and gene-rich datasets.
