Abstract/Description
-
This Thesis examines the components of the economic base of Martin County. A model is then constructed to reflect the nature of the county's economic base. Stability and multiplier analysis are applied to the model, followed by short run forecasts under various assumptions.

Therefore, the gamut of music programs must be continually and carefully examined to provide what is appropriate in the school music diet for today's technologically advanced child. This project was pursued to satisfy the need for a comprehensive music program in Martin County , Florida, and to assist the writer in guiding her kindergarten and first-grade children in discoveries leading to growth in musical sensitivity. As a result of the investigation, the writer has gained an in-depth understanding of the Manhattanville Music Curriculum Program, the Orff approach, and the Kodaly method as adapted by Mary Helen Richards. Related research revealed that no one method is the panacea in music education. Therefore, the forestated approaches were analyzed, paralleled, synthesized and implemented in structuring the music curriculum emphasizing creativity through involvement and discovery.

Show moreThis thesis reappraises the significance of Alexander Martin Sullivan, the Irish constitutional nationalist and owner-editor of the Nation, by examining his role in carrying Young Ireland’s moderate nationalist program through the lull in popular politics between the 1840s and 1870s. Sullivan has been routinely marginalized as an important historical figure in post-Famine popular politics, yet his campaign of propping up nationalist heroes and attempts at forming nationalist organizations, primarily through the Nation, ultimately helped to revitalize nationalist politics. Although his efforts were often threatened, and even thwarted at times, by James Stephens and other advanced nationalists, Sullivan managed to preserve constitutional nationalism until the emergence of Isaac Butt as leader of the home rule movement in the 1870s.

Abstract/Description

Sixty-two coastal and inland tree islands (hammocks) in Martin and Palm Beach Counties were mapped. Species composition was determined for 36 sites and used to test several hypotheses. The hypothesis was tested and supported that the percentage of tropical species inhabiting a tree island increases on north to south and west to east gradients. A linear regression was run to determine patterns in percent composition of tropical species and whether low hammocks were separable from high hammocks...
Show moreSixty-two coastal and inland tree islands (hammocks) in Martin and Palm Beach Counties were mapped. Species composition was determined for 36 sites and used to test several hypotheses. The hypothesis was tested and supported that the percentage of tropical species inhabiting a tree island increases on north to south and west to east gradients. A linear regression was run to determine patterns in percent composition of tropical species and whether low hammocks were separable from high hammocks. Data suggested that a range from 70 to 80 percent tropical species composition might be used to define "tropical" hammocks. Since hammocks in southern Florida are considered habitat islands, the MacArthur and Wilson concept was tested. An obtained slope (z value) of 0.18 compares well with the slope of 0.17 predicted by the MacArthur and Wilson model. A cluster analysis showed similarities of 36 sites based on 83 tree and shrub species present.

Show moreSinkholes are common karst features in Florida, having the highest rate of sinkhole occurrence in the US, which results in hundreds of millions estimated costs in damage per year and occasional life losses. While most sinkhole incidents reported in Florida relate to surface subsidence and collapse processes, other sinkhole formation mechanisms (like sagging) have received little attention as a relevant subsidence process. This is important since extensive areas of karst bedrock are overlain by variable thicknesses of non-soluble formations that may affect both the kinematics and damaging potential of these sinkholes in Florida. This research presents an automated GIS-based method to easily delineate surface depressional features in Martin County that result in surface depressional features and are related to cover sagging sinkholes. A total of 3,091 depressional features in Martin County were mapped using GIS methods and constrained with already existing direct drill cores. Results show a consistent statistically significant negative correlation between several morphometric features (i.e., area, perimeter, or depth) from these depressional features and depth to the limestone, suggesting that depressions are linked to sinkholes developed in deep-seated karst. While further subsurface imaging is needed to confirm this correlation, previous studies confirm these results and suggest that cover sagging, or cover suffusion sinkholes may represent a very large group of sinkholes traditionally unaccounted for in current sinkhole assessment maps in Florida. The methodology presented in this study can be easily extrapolated to other areas to further expand current sinkhole hazard and distribution maps.

Show moreThe C-23, C-24, C-44, North St. Lucie, and Tidal St. Lucie drainage basins in southeastern Florida contribute major pollutant-laden discharges to the St. Lucie Estuary. One of the key goals of several of the Indian River Lagoon Restoration Feasibility Study (IRLRFS) project features is to reduce the timing and delivery of freshwater discharges to estuary receiving waters. The WPA option is the most widely accepted feature. This regional water quality improvement system has been mentioned as either the centerpiece, or major part, of the solution to the St. Lucie Estuary discharge problem. As a result, this research effort seeks to predict WPA water quality impacts to the St. Lucie Estuary. The goal is to utilize numerical water quality modeling techniques to arrive at changes in discharge loading quantities of selected parameters that may result from the operation of the WPA system per its preliminary design.
