There were 95-128 loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nests per mile on six miles of beach. Seventeen green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nests were found. Nesting females did not avoid lighted, developed beaches in favor of undeveloped beaches. Hatchling emergence bearings were measured at 397 nests, and ambient light intensities were correlated with the incidence of misorientation. Most hatchlings emerging where artificial light sources were visible were misoriented inland. From 0-96% of misoriented hatchlings were killed by automobiles, ghost crabs, or dessication. Mortality was greatest where hatchlings were able to enter roadways, and lowest where barriers prevented this. Analysis of post-emergence contents of 422 nests revealed that mortality within nests was greater on soft beaches with large-grained sand than on fine-grained, firmer beaches, and was increased by human footfalls and beach-cleaning machinery.

Show moreDrawing on the principles of critical multicultural teacher education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and bilingual education, this study examined how pre-service teachers were prepared to educate Emerging Bilinguals (EBs) in ESOL-infused teacher education programs in Florida universities. The textual analysis of a purposeful sample of five elementary-level English Language Arts (ELA) methods textbooks, utilizing a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, revealed that authors overwhelmingly referred to EBs as English learners or English language learners, rather than bilinguals or dual language learners, and devoted less than 5% of the total content of four textbooks to topics about teaching methods, curriculum, and assessment for EBs. Evidence of five forms of curriculum bias was found, including invisibility, linguistic bias, fragmentation and isolation, stereotyping, and imbalance and selectivity. The findings suggest that textbook authors value knowledge about teaching EBs less than knowledge about teaching native English-speakers. EBs were stereotyped as a homogenous group of struggling readers and essentialized in terms of their limited English proficiency. One author conflated students’ language differences with physical limitations and learning disabilities, a troubling mischaracterization in the context of the overrepresentation of EBs in special education. Meanwhile, a preference shown for ESL methods over bilingual methods, based upon misconceptions about how EBs learn, suggests that textbook authors undervalue the cultures and linguistic skills that students bring from home. The hidden curriculum in ELA methods textbooks may influence a majority of pre-service teachers, who are typically monolingual and raised in the English-dominant mainstream culture, to develop a deficit view of EBs and utilize a one-size-fits-all approach towards ELA instruction. In order to prepare pre-service teachers to educate EBs for academic success, the teacher education curriculum must include material that explains linguistically responsive instruction and describes effective bilingual education models, within a critical pedagogical framework. Without this knowledge, pre-service teachers may continue instructional practices that contribute to a persistent “achievement gap” experienced by EBs. A transformation of the ELA methods curriculum is required so that pre-service teachers are prepared to implement a humanizing pedagogy that facilitates positive identity formation as it develops bilingual and biliterate students.

The evaluation of the SHT system provided information on its corrosion resistance and cathodic protection-influencing characteristics. The coating's impedance was analyzed while exposed to ambient versus 4.5 MPa pressures and immersion times of 1 to 9 days in seawater. Eleven specimen types were evaluated based on coating seam orientation and composition. The data support the conclusion that there was no effect on impedance values and phase shifts due to orientation, formulation, pressure values or immersion time. However, temperature increase above 30° was shown to decrease the impedance values of the SHT specimens.

The interactions of clients and therapists in a total sample of 76 psychotherapy sessions were analyzed using Hills Skills System (2017), Gottman, Woodin, and Coan’s (1998) Specific Affect Coding System, and scales of the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) and Real Relationship Inventory (RRI). Coded data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests which found significant differences between clients who dropout and the types of questions being asked in session (HSS). There were also significant differences between clients who dropout and the therapist and client SPAFF scores, SPAFF and HSS scores on the WAI and RRI, as well as the quality of questions being asked (HSS) over time (from initial session to fourth session). Coded data for differences between clients who dropout and the therapist and client assessment of the quality of the working alliance and real relationship were assessed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests and found no significant differences. Analysis of the results support the presence of therapist factors on the therapeutic relationship and client premature termination. These findings can also be added to the literature regarding the outcomes of the therapeutic relationship on client premature termination. The implications for psychotherapy practice, education, and research are discussed.

Continuous focal sub-group sampling was conducted, and one-tailed Kruskal-Wallis ANOVAs were used to test for differences between the age groups in frequencies of occurrence of: (1) the 7 behavioral categories, and (2) the 8 most frequently performed behavioral events. Juveniles performed significantly more Other behaviors and Attention to Object events than adults, suggesting the importance of play within this social species. A Mann-Whitney U test revealed that within mixed age classes, behaviors were performed within combined-age-class groups more often than within single-age-class groups, suggesting a participatory mode of learning within juveniles.

Analyses based on remotely sensed data are the most effective means to monitor and investigate wetland inundation dynamics. For the first time, this study deployed an automated thresholding method to quantify and compare the annual inundation characteristics in dry and wet seasons in the Everglades, using Landsat imagery in Google Earth Engine (GEE). This research presents the long-term time series maps from 2002 to 2021, with a comprehensive spatiotemporal depiction of inundation. In this paper, we bridged the research gap of space-time analysis for multi-season inundation dynamics, which is urgently needed for the Everglades wetland. Within a GIS-based framework, we integrated statistical models, such as Mann–Kendall and Sen’s Slope tests, to track the evolutionary trend of seasonal inundation dynamics. The spatiotemporal analyses highlight the significant differences in wet and dry seasons through time and space. The stationary or permanent inundation is more likely to be distributed along the coastal regions (Gulf of Mexico and Florida Bay) of the Everglades, presenting a warning regarding their vulnerability to sea level rise.

Show moreThe beginning of the new millennium finds documentary theatre serving as teacher and “healer” to those suffering and in need. By providing a thought provoking awareness of the “other,” it offers a unique lens with which to examine the socio-political similarities and differences between various cultures and ethnicities in order to promote intercultural understanding. Documentary is also used by teachers, therapists, and researchers as a tool for healing. By sharing personal stories of trauma and illness with others who are experiencing similar difficulties, emotional pains are alleviated and fears are assuaged. Documentary theatre has expanded in definition from the “epic dramas” of German playwrights Erwin Piscator and Bertholt Brecht during the height of the German Weimar Republic to the recent “verbatim” scripts of playwrights such as Anna Deveare Smith, Emily Mann, and Robin Soans. The dramaturgical duties of the playwright along with the participatory role of the audience have grown in complexity. In verbatim documentary the playwright must straddle a fine line between educating and entertaining while remaining faithful to the words of the respondents as well as to the context in which they were received. The audience, by responding to questionnaires and by engaging in talk-back sessions, plays a pivotal role in production. Documentary serves as an important vehicle for informing and inspiring audiences from all walks of life. In 2010, researchers Dr. Patricia Liehr of the Christine E. Lynn School of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University and Dr. Ryutaro Takahashi, Vice Director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology, approached me to create a documentary based on their combined interviews of Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima survivors. The resultant script, With Their Voices Raised, is included as an appendix to this dissertation as an example of the documentary genre and its unique capacity for research dissemination. With Their Voices Raised not only conveys the memories and fears of the survivors, but in its conclusion reveals how these victims of war have elected to live their lives in a quest for peace- choosing “hope over hate” in a shared world

Show moreThe concept of Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) relationship curve presents crucial design contribution for several decades under the assumption of a stationary climate, the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall nonetheless seemingly increase worldwide. Based on the research conducted in recent years, the greatest increases are likely to occur in short-duration storms lasting less than a day, potentially leading to an increase in the magnitude and frequency of flash floods. The trend analysis of the precipitation influencing the climate variability and extreme rainfall in the state of Florida is conducted in this study. Since these local changes are potentially or directly related to the surrounding oceanic-atmospheric oscillations, the following oscillations are analyzed or highlighted in this study: Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation (AMO), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and Pacific Decadal Oscillations (PDO). Collected throughout the state of Florida, the precipitation data from rainfall gages are grouped and analyzed based on type of duration such as short-term duration or minute, in hourly and in daily period. To assess statistical associations based on the ranks of the data, the non-parametric tests Kendall’s tau and Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient are used to determine the orientation of the trend and ultimately utilize the testing results to determine the statistical significance of the analyzed data. The outcome of the latter confirms with confidence whether there is an increasing or decreasing trend in precipitation depth in the State of Florida. The main emphasis is on the influence of rainfall extremes of short-term duration over a period of about 50 years. Results from both Spearman and Mann-Kendall tests show that the greatest percentage of increase occurs during the short rainfall duration period. The result highlights a tendency of increasing trends in three different regions, two of which are more into the central and peninsula region of Florida and one in the continental region. Given its topography and the nature of its water surface such as the everglades and the Lake Okeechobee, Florida experience a wide range of weather patterns resulting in frequent flooding during wet season and drought in the dry season.

Show moreBaseflow is the portion of the streamflow that is sustained between precipitation events, fed to streams by delayed pathways. Baseflow estimation and evaluation are two critical and essential tasks for water quality and quantity, drought management, water supply, and groundwater protection. In this research study, the influences of climate change and variability on baseflow derived from hundreds of watersheds in the continental United States are evaluated. Baseflows are estimated using streamflow data from these watersheds that are least affected by anthropogenic influences. In the initial phase of the study, an exhaustive evaluation of four different baseflow separation methods is carried out using streamflow data at several sites from the South Atlantic-Gulf region which includes a geographical region comprising of nine states in the southeastern U.S. Baseflows are estimated at different temporal scales and are used to assess the performances of different methods over a 44-year period starting from the year 1970 and the best method among these methods is selected for further analysis. Assessments of climate change influence on baseflows are then carried out using two nonparametric statistical trend tests (viz., Spearman’s Rho (SR) and Mann-Kendall (MK)). Trends in baseflows are evaluated at 574 sites located within the watersheds in the U.S. that are known to be least impacted by human influences. Trends were determined for annual maximum, mean, and median baseflows for the period 1970-2013. Spatially non-uniform trends and changes in characteristics of baseflows and strong influences of past precipitation events on the baseflow extremes were noted across the continental U.S. Some regions have shown decreasing baseflow trends and these are cause for concern and have severe implications for drought mitigation plans and low-flow management strategies in several watersheds in the U.S. In the final phase of the study influences of climate variability on baseflow manifested through different phases of individual and coupled oceanic and atmospheric oscillations are evaluated. Baseflows at 574 sites separated by temporal windows that coincide with two or more phases of different decadal, quasi-decadal and multi-year oscillations (viz., Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), North Atlantic oscillation (NAO), Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO), and El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO)) are evaluated for statistically significant changes using nonparametric statistical hypothesis tests. Results from the study indicate that unlike climate change influences, climate variability effects are noted only in few specific physiographic regions of the U.S. This study documents an exhaustive and comprehensive assessment of changes in baseflows due to changing climate and results from this work can aid in short- and long-term management of low flows at a regional level that supports sustainable aquatic environment and handle droughts effectively.

The development of a paleostrait across the northern extent of this platform inhibited transport of clastic sediments below this point. Southward, such features as reefs, banks, and islands developed which eventually trapped sediments that form southern Florida. A reef tract which underlies the topographic highs that surround the present day Everglades encircled an inner continental sea during Pliocene-Pleistocene time. The development of a bank reef within this sea is indicated by a diverse coral and molluscan fauna. Collections of this fauna were made by the writer in an area in the upper Everglades known as the West Everglades High. The development of this reef and perpetuation of its form through the overlying stratigraphy became an important structural feature in the development of the Everglades in the Recent.

Within these months was lost perhaps the last opportunity to eliminate the nuclear threat to the world, and gone a chance to avert an international arms race. The subject of responsibility for failure to reach agreement on the American proposal, presented by Bernard M. Baruch at the first meeting in 1946, is here addressed. When negotiations were still possible, Baruch remained inflexible because of reliance upon a winning weapon. The Russian delegate, Andrei A. Gromyko, was unshaken in clinging to national security, and optimistic about the Soviet development of its own bomb. In no way was agreement possible. Both sides took positions which ensured failure.
