Imagine having to leave your home with just a few possessions. The world is currently witnessing a wave of mass migration, with nearly 65 million people being displaced because of war or persecution, and an even higher number migrating from poverty. This thesis uses design to visually articulate the personal narratives surrounding the struggles of flight and the significance of emotion to the debate on migrant identity, acculturation, and the perception of being the other, focusing on the current displacement crisis in Venezuela. The visual message making process of graphic design is used as a catalyst for social good with the intent to create a conversation and generate an experience and that promotes advocacy.

Show moreIn 1994 when Peter Shor released his namesake algorithm for factoring and solving the discrete logarithm problem he changed cryptography forever. Many of the state-of-the-art cryptosystems for internet and other computerized communications will become obsolete with the advent of quantum computers. Two distinct approaches have grown to avoid the downfall of secure communication: quantum cryptography which is based in physics and information theory, and post-quantum cryptography which uses mathematical foundations believed not to be weak against even quantum assisted adversaries. This thesis is the culmination of several studies involving cryptanalysis of schemes in both the quantum and post-quantum paradigms as well as mathematically founded constructions in the post-quantum regime. The first two chapters of this thesis on background information are intended for the reader to more fully grasp the later chapters. The third chapter shows an attack and ultimate futility of a variety of related quantum authentication schemes. The fourth chapter shows a parametric improvement over other state-of-the-art schemes in lattice based cryptography by utilizing a different cryptographic primitive. The fifth chapter proposes an attack on specific parameters of a specific lattice-based cryptographic primitive. Finally, chapter six presents a construction for a fully homomorphic encryption scheme adapted to allow for privacy enhanced machine learning.

Abstract/Description
-
Blood Drive and Other Stories is a collection of fictional works. It includes stories that take place in South Florida or are inspired by the landscape of it. The themes within each vary from the limits one is willing to go to enact small-town justice, the need to conserve consciousness, adapting to age, living with medication, and the desire to burn everything down.

From Siri on our iPhones to our computer tailored Netflix home screens to fast learning computerized and independent floor vacuums AI is everywhere you turn intruding on every aspect of daily functioning. As the pressure of said intrusion increases questions arise about whether all these advances can become crushing to humans. In some instances technology with AI components has been used to replace certain skill sets affecting the availability of employment surround jobs including, cashiers, hotel reception, customer service, taxi drivers, toll booths. And what about graphic design? Can a machine programmed with AI replace the creativity of a human spirit? The research explores the tension between automated (artificial intelligence + machine learning) and manual, human initiated methods and practices in graphic design… Can humans be removed from the process of graphic design? Expected outcome: No How can the case study exploration coupled with the examination of certain considerations including ethical practices, human creativity, quality and originality demonstrate the necessity of human involvement.

Show moreRobert S. McNamara served as U.S. Secretary of Defense (SOD) for Presidents John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. McNamara participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis negotiations in 1961 and became a key formulator of Vietnam policy. This thesis challenges scholarship that characterizes McNamara as a fierce hawk who relentlessly executed military escalation in Vietnam. By drawing parallels between McNamara’s role in the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War, and by exploring how McNamara’s concept of loyalty to the presidency influenced his decisions, this thesis argues that the SOD was willing to escalate the situation militarily as a form of political communication with the adversary. To McNamara, military pressure was a means to create avenues for diplomacy. McNamara became increasingly uncomfortable – and ultimately resigned in 1968 - when the Johnson administration pursued military escalation without an organized campaign towards negotiations. He was therefore not as hawkish as other scholars have claimed.

Show moreOver the last forty years, there has been ample research examining general leadership development and the characteristics of followers and leaders (Day, 2001). However, although recognized as important for leader development and leadership effectiveness, there is still much to understand about leader identity (Epitropaki et al., 2017). The focus on identity literature has been disproportionately focused on follower identity rather than leader identity (Epitropaki et al., 2017; Johnson et al., 2012). This shortage is unfortunate due to leader identity’s capabilities in developing leaders and effective leader behaviors (Miscenko et al., 2017; Johnson et al., 2012). Due to this deficiency, I focus my dissertation on leader identity and attempt to better grasp the development of one’s leader identity. In line with recent conceptual literature, I examine the four dimensions of leader identity and patterns of development to better understand the development of leader identity. Through the two papers in this dissertation, I aim to enhance our current understanding of leader identity.

Show moreEffective classification with imbalanced data is an important area of research, as high class imbalance is naturally inherent in many real-world applications, e.g. anomaly detection. Modeling such skewed data distributions is often very difficult, and non-standard methods are sometimes required to combat these negative effects. These challenges have been studied thoroughly using traditional machine learning algorithms, but very little empirical work exists in the area of deep learning with class imbalanced big data. Following an in-depth survey of deep learning methods for addressing class imbalance, we evaluate various methods for addressing imbalance on the task of detecting Medicare fraud, a big data problem characterized by extreme class imbalance. Case studies herein demonstrate the impact of class imbalance on neural networks, evaluate the efficacy of data-level and algorithm-level methods, and achieve state-of-the-art results on the given Medicare data set. Results indicate that combining under-sampling and over-sampling maximizes both performance and efficiency.

This network comprises an intricate, functional shield for the human brain, equipped with highly specialized cells like pericytes, astrocytic end-feet, endothelial and neuronal cells. This highly organized barrier maintains the brain’s structural integrity by revealing a discriminatory absorbency of molecules based on their molecular weight and ample fat solubility. In view of this impediment to the delivery of many prospective therapeutic agents from crossing the inviolate BBB, a myriad of innovative surgical and pharmacological interventions have been developed to bypass it, one of which is the BBBD protocol.

Excelencia in Education (2016) reported that 21% of traditional age college male students were Latino males, second only to White males. The report further noted that Latino males are ranked the lowest in degree attainment – of whom only 20% have earned an associate’s degree or higher (Excelencia in Education, 2016). Show moreExcelencia in Education (2016) reported that 21% of traditional age college male students were Latino males, second only to White males. The report further noted that Latino males are ranked the lowest in degree attainment – of whom only 20% have earned an associate’s degree or higher (Excelencia in Education, 2016). As an insufficient number of Latino males are graduating with post-secondary degrees, more research must be conducted to explore their educational journey from the community college to the university and how to best support them through their transition. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative narrative research study was to explore the stories of Latino male students as they transfer from a community college to a university. To capture the essence of Latino male students’ stories through the community college transfer experience to university, the research questions focused on what motivated and influenced their journey through the community college to a university. The research questions that guided this study were: What motivated and influenced Latino males’ decisions to enroll in a community college? What motivated and influenced Latino males’ decisions to transfer from a community college to a university? How do Latino male transfer students describe their transition from community college to a university? In this qualitative narrative research study, 10 participants participated in in-depth, semi-structured virtual interviews and completed two journal prompts. To assist in triangulation and validity, participants reviewed the data for accuracy, and thick rich descriptions were used to provide breadth and depth to their narratives. Once the data were collected, it was organized through the qualitative research data management software MAXQDA and analyzed using in vivo, descriptive, and pattern coding. The conceptual frameworks that informed this narrative study were the hero’s journey by Joseph Campbell (2008) and transition theory by Nancy K. Schlossberg (2011).
