Freudian psychoanalysis seeks to achieve a measure of psychic health for the individual through making the unconscious conscious, thereby resolving partially the inherent conflict between the pleasure principle of the unconscious id and the reality principle of the conscious ego. Surrealism hoped to obtain this same end on a collective basis through the use of symbols generated by the unconscious and expressed poetically in literary and visual art. "I believe in the future resolution of these two states, dream and reality, which are seemingly so contradictory, into a kind of absolute reality, a surreality," Surrealism's chief spokesman, Andre Breton wrote in the Manifesto.

Show moreOver the past 90 years antibiotics have dramatically impacted healthcare. We now have cures for infections people once thought were deadly. Medical advances have contributed to an increase in life expectancy, spearheaded by antibiotics. If these antibiotics are so useful, why are 23,000 people still dying every year from antibiotic-resistant pathogens? The answer to this question is due to the increased exposure to antibiotics. The presence of antibiotics in our water system allows for harmful bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics that eventually produce harmful strains. Water samples were tested for the presence of different antibiotics. After the analysis, antibiotics were found to be present in oceanwater, aquaculture, and wastewater at sewage treatment facilities. In order to combat this issue, we need to learn how these antibiotics are making their way into our water systems and how this increase in exposure could possibly contribute to an increase in antibiotic resistance.

Utilizing data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) Survey MPL-4, of the latest generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey we identified fourteen post-starburst (E+A) systems that lie within the Green Valley zone. We identify the E+As by their SDSS single fiber spectrum and u-r color, then confirmed their classification as post-starburst by coding/plotting methods and spectral synthesis programs, as well as with their Spectral Energy Distributions from 0.15μm to 22μm, using GALEX,...

We identify the E+As by their SDSS single fiber spectrum and u-r color, then confirmed their classification as post-starburst by coding/plotting methods and spectral synthesis programs, as well as with their Spectral Energy Distributions from 0.15μm to 22μm, using GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE data. We produced maps of Gaussian-fitted fluxes, equivalent widths, stellar velocities, metallicities and age. We also produced spectral line ratio diagrams to classify regions of stellar populations of the galaxies. We found that our sample of E+As retain their post-starburst properties across the entire galaxy, not just at their center. We detected matching a trend line in the ultraviolet and optical bands, and also through the J, H and Ks bands, except for one object. We classified one of the 14 galaxies as a luminous infrared, unusual for a post-starburst object.

Show moreIn response to the release of one of its Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB or Board) inspection reports, Deloitte notes that “[p]rofessional judgments of reasonable and highly competent people may differ as to the nature and extent of necessary auditing procedures, conclusions reached and required documentation” (PCAOB, 2008, 30). Other responses to PCAOB findings echo this sentiment. Stakeholders need to understand causes of differences between experts’ professional judgments to effectively utilize PCAOB inspection findings and firms’ responses to those findings. This study uses Social Identity Theory to explore whether role identity as an audit partner, internal reviewer, or PCAOB inspector, influences an expert’s judgments in an ambiguous decision environment. I find that professional judgments do not differ based on professional identity. This study also examines whether the presence or absence of outcome knowledge explains judgment differences among auditing experts. Consistent with prior research, e.g. Peecher & Piercey, 2008, outcome knowledge does affect experts’ professional judgment. I also find that experts’ level of organizational identification and membership esteem impacts professional judgment.

The recent formation of Diaspora movements globally suggests that these groups of migrants are not just financial remitters but are organized, visible collectives that influence the geo-political status quo in many ways. ... Utilizing qualitative methodology in conjunction with the analytical lenses of social movement theory and the rhetoric of movements, the study addresses the gaps in the literature on Diasporas by exploring the factors that contributed to the formation of the Jamaican Diaspora during the years 1962 to 2011. ... Moving even beyond our conceptualization of movements, this study also connects Diasporas to the notion of publics. Migrant communities, like the Jamaican Diaspora, negotiate global and local terrains, operate as self-organized publics and form new public spaces in which a common identity goal and imagination connects and motivates strangers.

This energy can then be stored or directed to power coastal cities or offshore installations. This thesis discusses a small-scale (~2m diameter) wave energy converter developed to gather open-water performance data for validating the numerical simulation of a 4-body oscillating body type WEC design. This WEC underwent numerical simulation using both WEC-Sim and ProteusDS, and these results were subsequently compared to the in-water testing data to validate the accuracy of the simulation. This research was conducted as part of the REU program in Marine Renewable Energy at FAU.
