Show moreWithin three months of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which allowed military commanders to establish zones of military importance within which they could remove any person considered dangerous, specifically those of Japanese descent. The Tolan Committee, a House committee examining the logistics of the new wartime economy, was immediately sent to the West Coast in order to evaluate the merit of the President's policy. They were presented with the most complete set of arguments both supporting and opposing internment, and were therefore in a unique position to make a well-informed decision regarding the internment of over 100,000 persons. Despite the strength of the arguments of the opposition, the Committee abdicated their power and submitted to the will of the President and the military. In succumbing to fear, the Committee legitimized the policy of internment without making a truly objective decision.

ON SPECTRAL SYSTEMS.

Creator
-
DEMSKY, SCOTT HARVEY., Florida Atlantic University
-
Abstract/Description
-
In this thesis, we present a detailed study of the theory of spectral sequences, based on the notion of a spectral system. We present the general theory of spectral systems and the associated spectral sequences. We also present a complete discussion of the two particular situations most frequently encountered in applications, namely regular spectral systems and the spectral systems associated with double complexes.

Show moreInternal strife has plagued the South American country of Colombia for well over forty years. In an effort to combat the different subversive elements within its borders, the Government of Colombia developed an interagency counterinsurgency strategy that takes a whole-of-government approach. This approach takes many governmental functions and institutions and places them under one counterinsurgency "umbrella". The cornerstone of this interagency model is strong civil-military cooperation. What this research project seeks to accomplish is to first apply the Concordance Theory of Civil-Military Relations to Colombia's unique civil-military relationship. Secondly, this research project seeks to understand how the Colombian interagency counterinsurgency model has balanced the country's security and socio-political development and sustainability. Specifically, this research project attempts to answer the question of how this interagency model of counterinsurgency influences socio-political and security sustainability since the implementation of Plan Colombia. The methodology for this research project will include a combination of primary source reviews, comparative case study examination and simple trend analysis of significant security and socio-political variables. This methodological approach will best describe the unique political, military and social dynamics taking place within Colombia. This analysis of Colombia's interagency counterinsurgency strategy is relevant not only to Colombia but to many other countries facing similar challenges in Latin America and around the world. The applicability of this model to other insurgency scenarios will also be briefly examined.

The goal of this dissertation research was to test the hypothesis that regeneration of neurons and glia in the adult brain can be manipulated by neurotrophic drugs in the context of two mouse models of neurodegenerative disease : Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease.... These findings have implications for the pathophysiology of Huntington's disease and neurodegeneration in general. Specific alterations to the SVZ neurogenic niche parallel some of the pre-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. This dissertation research contributes to the growing body of literature concerning the pharmacological modulation of SVZ-derived neurogenesis designed to attenuate the progressive loss of neurons in neurodegenerative diseases and perhaps delay the onset of symptoms.

Recollections of college experiences of alumni from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years past were solicited by means of a questionnaire and were compared with perceptions of present-day sophomores. Replies were analyzed by a one-way analysis of variance. The findings of the study revealed that the attitudes, goals and social views of alumni from previous years did not vary significantly from those of present sophomores. Alumni and students agreed that their experiences were academically and socially beneficial. Finally, letters and comments from those responding were studied and these further supported the above findings.

John Gladstone, father of the "perennial" Prime Minister, was the originator of the enterprise. He was one of the few subjects of Her Royal Majesty with the influence, wealth, and nerve to begin a new, and questionable, labor system so soon after the emancipation of African slaves in the British Empire. The ramifications of the Gladstone coolies were historically important and world-wide in scope. Because of them the Government of the British Empire entered the coolie trade and made it one of its strong props.

Since its inception, no survey of public opinion toward the College had ever been undertaken. The purpose of the present study was to find out whether registered voters served by the College were aware of its activities, and to learn of their opinions of its philosophies, policies and programs. A questionnaire was sent out to a stratified random sampling of the registered voters of Broward County, Florida. It was revealed that among the respondents, those in higher income brackets and those with a higher level of education knew more about Broward Community College than did those with lower incomes or less education. Respondents with considerable knowledge of the College offered more opinions and agreed more with the philosophies, policies and programs of the institution than did those who knew very little about the College. The results showed that: 1. A majority of the respondents were able to identify Broward Community College as the local public two-year community college. 2. The respondents were generally aware of the College's philosophies, policies and programs. 3. The respondents were in general agreement with the College's philosophies, policies and programs. 4. The respondents were in general agreement that the College is fulfilling its goals through its various parallel, occupational and community service programs.

Show moreIndividuals who have suffered neurotrauma like a stroke or brachial plexus injury often experience reduced limb functionality. Soft robotic exoskeletons have been successful in assisting rehabilitative treatment and improving activities of daily life but restoring dexterity for tasks such as playing musical instruments has proven challenging. This research presents a soft robotic hand exoskeleton coupled with machine learning algorithms to aid in relearning how to play the piano by ‘feeling’ the difference between correct and incorrect versions of the same song. The exoskeleton features piezoresistive sensor arrays with 16 taxels integrated into each fingertip. The hand exoskeleton was created as a single unit, with polyvinyl acid (PVA) used as a stent and later dissolved to construct the internal pressure chambers for the five individually actuated digits. Ten variations of a song were produced, one that was correct and nine containing rhythmic errors. To classify these song variations, Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithms were trained with data from the 80 taxels combined from the tactile sensors in the fingertips. Feeling the differences between correct and incorrect versions of the song was done with the exoskeleton independently and while the exoskeleton was worn by a person. Results demonstrated that the ANN algorithm had the highest classification accuracy of 97.13% ± 2.00% with the human subject and 94.60% ± 1.26% without. These findings highlight the potential of the smart exoskeleton to aid disabled individuals in relearning dexterous tasks like playing musical instruments.

Show moreThe purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), quality improvement project was to assist participants in the management of their type 2 diabetes through the use an evidencebased Whole-Food, Plant-Based (WFPB) diet approach. The project described the effectiveness of individual WFPB instruction and counseling. Following recruitment, the participant attended weekly dietary counseling sessions focused on incorporating a WFPB diet over a 6-week period. The participant completed the 16-item food intake questionnaire (16-FIQ) pre- and post-dietary counseling along with HgbA1c measurements during the project period. Post dietary counseling resulted in an increase in the participant’s HgbA1c from 8.1% to 8.9%, but the participants showed significant health behavior change as measured in the pre- and post-intervention 16 FIQ. The participant chose less animal-based products and substituted plant-based food choices post dietary counseling. Even though the participant’s HgbA1c showed no improvement, the participant demonstrated increase awareness regarding daily dietary decisions resulting in an increase in plant-based food consumption. Knowledge gained will be used to improve treatment recommendations for persons receiving care for type 2 diabetes at a volunteer primary care clinic in Southeast Florida.
