Road networks have significant impacts on ecosystems through deforestation, rapid land conversion and wildlife-vehicle collisions. Road ecology seeks to analyze the spatial and biological patterns of collisions to understand the effect of roadways and best inform transportation planning in mitigating these threats. 215 km of roadway BR-262, that bisects critical habitat of the Brazilian Cerrado and Pantanal in southwest Brazil, was analyzed between April 2011 and June 2012 to assess how...

Road ecology seeks to analyze the spatial and biological patterns of collisions to understand the effect of roadways and best inform transportation planning in mitigating these threats. 215 km of roadway BR-262, that bisects critical habitat of the Brazilian Cerrado and Pantanal in southwest Brazil, was analyzed between April 2011 and June 2012 to assess how biological, physical and landscape characteristics affect clustering of collisions. 518 collisions, representing 40 species, were found to be seasonally clustered between the unimodal rain and flood pulse in a February-March-April window and were spatially clustered over the study area in relation to cash crop and cattle ranching land-use and the rural low-lying Pantanal floodplain. Mitigation seeks to work with local communities and transportation agencies to facilitate fauna safe crossing through the roadway that do not conflict with drivers.

Show moreHugh Price Hughes was a Welsh Methodist minister who revolutionized Victorian Methodism through his "Forward Movement" and the West London Mission. He was important because he helped to modernize and socialize Nonconformity and brought the forces of holiness to bear on the political process by encouraging an activist faith. The use of The Methodist Times and his sermons demonstrate his message that Christianity and power politics were compatible. However, there were inconsistencies in his vision, as he tried to combine socialism and "liberal imperialism," duty and political activism. Evaluations of his sermons reveal his extreme idealism which was fast becoming problematic by the late Victorian, early Edwardian period. Hughes epitomized the transitional nature of his time and place. Despite his noble effort to modernize Christian belief, his vision of a Christian world order was politically paternalistic and out of touch with burgeoning democracy.

Heuristic Programming and the Minimal Crossing Problem.
-
Creator

Abstract/Description
-
There are several theorems which give the upper bounds on the number of crossings of a graph in a plane. In this thesis we shall program certain heuristic procedures for finding the layout of the graph with the fewest number of crossings. We will then examine the output of these procedures to see if they always give us a graph with the fewest number of crossings.

Show moreIn his epic poem Paradise Lost, John Milton, through sublime narration, creates his Satan as a sublimely dangerous villain in accordance with Pseudo-Longinus's five principles of elevated language, as outlined in Book VIII of On the Sublime. In his treatise, the philosopher delineates that the five principles for sublime expression are the ''power of forming great conceptions," the gift of "vehement and inspired passion," the "formation of figures," the art of"noble diction," and an abi lity to produce "dignified and elevated composition." Foundational to sublime composition and the excellent usage of these principles is the gift of discourse. Milton, in his quest to "justify the ways of God to men" (1.26), fulfills these requirements for the sublime. As the poet-narrator, he demonstrates his mastery in transporting the audience into the realm of his imagination, sublimely conceiving, creating, and portraying his Satan to be a dangerous villain.
