Greene's pervasive theme of escaping a mundane existence and crossing into a new realm, a world created by the character's imagination, is elucidated by Wolfgang Iser's critical concept of boundary-crossing and related categories of transgressive fictionality. Particularly in these texts, Greene demonstrates his literary historical position as an inheritor of the Quixote and of Cervantes's awareness of the novel as, in Robert Alter's phrase, a "self-conscious genre."

ANTITHETICAL FORCES IN TWO NOVELS OF GRAHAM GREENE.

This thesis demonstrates the dichotomy of opposing political and theological beliefs in two novels of Graham Greene. The journey motif in both the whiskey priest of The Power and the Glory and the Monsignor in Monsignor Quixote parallel the author's development from the youthful political zealot determined to right universal wrongs to the mature acquiescent accepting a unified world as an impossibility. The journey motif in both the whiskey priest of The Power and the Glory and the Monsignor in Monsignor Quixote parallel the author's development from the youthful political zealot determined to right universal wrongs to the mature acquiescent accepting a unified world as an impossibility. In Monsignor Quixote, Greene depicts a spirit of compassion enlarged by exposure and acceptance of diametrically opposite beliefs. The friendship of the Catholic and Communist enable each to acknowledge the validity of the other's ideas. Their dreams function as concrete and abstract elements in plot development and characterization. This study extrapolates the paradoxical fact of this author's personality as it reveals the serious nature of the young and old Greene, then delights us with the lighter side, thus sensitizing us to elements both tragic and comic.

Show moreAlthough the preponderance of modern criticism about The Power and the Glory focuses only on religious themes and concerns, the formal narrative technique of Graham Greene deserves equal consideration. Greene very deliberately and consistently constructs a narrative that uses specific formal devices and linguistic techniques that further enhance a formal rhetorical study of the novel and that augment a thematic analysis of the novel. Greene's formal techniques include shifts in narrative point of view, precise forms of language, changing levels of diction, and specific grammatical devices. By analyzing the narrative techniques and linguistic markers that Greene employs, in conjunction with a theme-based analysis, we achieve great insight into the overall picture of the novel and the state of mind of the characters, particularly the protagonist of the novel, the whiskey priest.

Show moreCommunity and junior colleges are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of adding international dimensions to the curriculum. As community-based institutions, the community colleges have begun to recognize the importance of education for international understanding. Community college presidents, national organizations, and government officials have cited international education as a priority for two-year institutions in the corning decade. The purpose of this study was to research international education programs at the eight Florida community and junior colleges which held membership in the Florida Collegiate Consortium for International / Intercultural Education during 1979. The international education officers were queried regarding the status of international education within their institutions. Seven of the eight officers cited the commitment of the president of the college as a major factor contributing to their college's involvement in international education. International student programs and efforts to increase the international nature of the curriculum were cited as the most important areas of international education by seven of those interview-ed. Other persons within each institution who are also involved in international education programs were identified. None of the colleges researched have developed evaluation procedures for international education programs. Faculty-related problems were most often cited by those interviewed as internal problems impeding international programs. Finally, the international education officers were optimistic regarding the future of internatioral education in Florida community colleges. More than one-third (37.5 percent) of Broward Community College 1977-78 graduates did not receive credit in a single international course. Student enrollment in international courses was found to vary according to student major.

Chapter One includes an §varview of previous research done in this area and the effects of different social class backgrounds on students' educational development. It was hypothesized that in as much as the social class an individual emerges from can greatly influence his general attitudes, educational achievement , and political ideas, it therefore should influence how a student views historical problems. A survey was administered to all 180 second year history students at Broward Junior College to determine their socio-economic status and their attitudes on ten selected historical problems. A modified Warner method was used and the results correlated. There appears to be a relationship between social class and historical attitudes but it is not clear what this relationship is. Only on questions concerning communism was any pattern apparent. Further research would be necessary to determine the exact relationship.

Show moreIn order to facilitate the development, discussion, and advancement of the relatively new subfield of Artificial Intelligence focused on generating narrative content, the author has developed a pattern language for generating narratives, along with a new categorization framework for narrative generation systems. An emphasis and focus is placed on generating the Fabula of the story (the ordered sequence of events that make up the plot). Approaches to narrative generation are classified into one of three categories, and a pattern is presented for each approach. Enhancement patterns that can be used in conjunction with one of the core patterns are also identified. In total, nine patterns are identified - three core narratology patterns, four Fabula patterns, and two extension patterns. These patterns will be very useful to software architects designing a new generation of narrative generation systems.
