Show moreOver 40 million people in the United States are living in poverty today. The effects of living in disadvantaged circumstances increases the individual’s likelihood of experiencing persistent anxiety, which can lead to chronic health conditions. Studies have associated persistent anxiety with cardiovascular compromise as a result of decreased levels of heart rate variability (HRV). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between anxiety and heart rate variability in parents or guardians of children in Head Start, a federally funded program for families with low-incomes. A descriptive correlational design comparing the scores on the PROMIS anxiety tool with HRV as measured by the emWave biometric instrument will be used. The sample consists of 32 participants. Data will be analyzed using bivariate correlations. Increased levels of anxiety and decreased heart rate variability are anticipated outcomes of this study. Findings will assist in identifying health risks in this vulnerable population.

ABSTRACT COHOMOLOGY FOR RINGS.
-
Creator
-
EDWARDS, THERESA EARLY., Florida Atlantic University
-
Abstract/Description
-
In this thesis we propose an axiomatic development for abstract cohomology theory for rings. This approach presupposes only the most elementary techniques of homological algebra. Our main result, the uniqueness theorem, is proved in such generality that several seemingly isolated results follow as particular cases.

This thesis contains a report of the purification of tellurium by means of normal freezing, vacuum distillation, and zone refining. The purified material has been grown into single crystals by the Czochralski method. Crystals were also grown following each of the purification processes. All of the purification processes were carried out in a forming gas atmosphere (85% nitrogen, 15% hydrogen). Samples cleaved at 77K and whole crystals were subjected to measurements of conductivity, Hall coefficient, and minority carrier lifetime as a function of temperature over the range 77 to 300K. The conductivity and Hall coefficient measurements serve to classify the crystals as to chemical purity, while the minority carrier lifetime measurements give an indication of the perfection of the crystalline structure. A complete description of the processes used and the apparatus that was constructed is included along with a discussion of the results.

Show moreEma Brodber combines sociological concerns with her creative imagination in two novels, Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home and Myal. Her stated aim is to provide people of the African diaspora with tools to face the world more confidently. She is particularly interested in the plight of women in postcolonial Caribbean countries whose lives are determined by imperialist and patriarchal discourses. The tools she provides are linguistic. By integrating Jamaican Creole and English Brodber enacts her protagonists' struggles to find a language capable of expressing their reality and opposing colonizing fictions. The novels chart the transition from child to adult of two characters, Nellie and Ella. They grow up in Jamaica during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was a time when confusing class, color and gender ideologies, promulgated by written and oral traditions, inhibited healthy identity formation. Migration to America sufficiently distances them from Jamaica to allow for an interrogation of the conflicting messages about womanhood which Jamaican society promulgates. On returning home, they learn that the imperialist and patriarchal ideals that shape society can be challenged. In particular, they realize the power of words to effect change. Through a new critical awareness born of personal experience and a revisiting of history, they also learn that Jamaican culture can nurture as well as harm them.

These butterfly community characteristics and plant species diversity declined with time-since-burn. Abundance, species richness and species diversity of common butterflies were dependent on plant diversity. These butterfly community characteristics and plant species diversity declined with time-since-burn. Atrytonopsis Manna loammii , a rare butterfly, was found during three different flight seasons in a unit that had been burned in July 1997, as well as a unit burned in February 1999, indicating that early recovery of recently burned units can provided suitable habitat for this rare species. Proper burn rotations and invertebrate surveys are recommended for the conservation of rare species.

“Call Me Tess”: articulating and unwriting identity in Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

Abstract/Description

In Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles, male characters inscribe and project stereotyped images of femininity onto the novel’s eponymous heroine. In this thesis, I argue that Tess defies these inscriptions and projections not only through her use of violence, but also through a radical form of submission. Tess, who is often described by critics as a victim of fate, becomes in my argument a formidable figure; even her death, which is frequently read as a capitulation to the forces against...

In this thesis, I argue that Tess defies these inscriptions and projections not only through her use of violence, but also through a radical form of submission. Tess, who is often described by critics as a victim of fate, becomes in my argument a formidable figure; even her death, which is frequently read as a capitulation to the forces against her, becomes in this interpretation a deliberate act of defiance. Tess obliterates her own body, the contested site of inscription and projection, in order to deny it to her persecutors.

According to Moss et al (2018), Hypertension (HTN) is a major cause of the disproportionately high rates of coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. For African-Americans, high blood pressure also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe (American Heart Association, 2016). Show moreAccording to Moss et al (2018), Hypertension (HTN) is a major cause of the disproportionately high rates of coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. For African-Americans, high blood pressure also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe (American Heart Association, 2016). HTN is worth being addressed because it is a very serious disease that can become a silent killer to all. This doctoral project addresses a specific need of a tailored education program about HTN, a healthy diet aligned with the DASH diet and exercise in the underserved population. The intention of this paper is to improve participants’ hypertension knowledge, DASH diet adherence, and participation in physical activity to decrease blood pressures, and to provide a comprehensive description of this quality improvement project with recommendations for practice change. This project was implemented through telehealth due to the current pandemic of COVID 19.
