Show moreMuch of what we currently know about consumers' reaction to persuasive attempts (advertisements) comes from studying mass media communications which are largely one-way and image-centered. Internet-based advertising is neither given the focus on information and the ability to narrowly target such appeals (sites), as in direct marketing advertising. Given the emergence of Internet promotions, this is a substantial gap in our knowledge. This research seeks to both extend the boundaries of current direct marketing research (with its predominant focus on who will reply) and the domain of existing persuasion theories and models, attempting to gain a greater understanding of why consumers respond as they do to Internet advertising. By adapting the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to the Internet, this research attempts to determine if executional cues play a role in enhancing persuasiveness and the moderating effects of involvement. Additionally, this research draws on the substantial work on attitude towards the ad (A$\sb{\rm ad}$), including attempts to greater understand the antecedents of these attitudes and proposed distinctions between executional and content aspects of Internet ads, to see if this rich framework is useful in predicating outcomes for Internet advertising. This research has significant implications for practitioners as it looks beyond atheoretical testing-based insights of what people respond to, drawing on established theory to provide insights into why consumers respond as they do to Internet based advertising. Testing the adaptability of current persuasion theory to this emerging medium will do much to begin building a solid understanding of how Internet advertising works. Using an interactive computer-based simulation in a 2 (involvement) x 2 (argument strength) x 2 (peripheral cue: present or absent) between subject factorial design with 224 subjects the adaptability of existing persuasion research to the Internet was tested. Findings demonstrate the adaptability of the ELM to Internet advertising, as well as the important antecedent effects of attitudes towards Internet advertising on persuasion. However, the decomposition of A$\sb{\rm ad}$ proved less useful in this new domain. All told, much of what we currently know about persuasion is likely to prove useful in developing promotional campaigns for the Internet.

Three different approaches to remote database access, the CGI-based approach, the Oracle Webserver-based approach and the CORBA-based approach, are discussed. Experiments are conducted to compare the pros and cons of each approach. The Oracle database and Microsoft Access database are utilized as the target database systems. For the CGI-based approach, the CGI programs are coded with ProC, Oracle's SQL-embedded C language, in Microsoft Visual C++ developer's studio, and a Student Record example is demonstrated. For the Oracle Webserver-based approach, the Oracle Webserver 1.1 has been setup and an Online Shopping Club example is demonstrated. For the CORBA-based approach, Orbix Web 2.0.1 and JDK 1.1.1 are utilized as the CORBA system and the development language, respectively, and several examples including single server, multiple servers and multiple databases are presented. An extended SQL syntax is proposed to manipulate data from multiple database systems residing on different hosts in one SQL statement. The implementation of extended SQL statements in CORBA's server/client application is also suggested. With the help of extended SQL syntax and CORBA's multiple server access feature, an example of the client application accessing two databases at a time is illustrated. The pros and cons are discussed of the three remote database access approaches studied in the thesis: (I) The CGI-based approach, which is the most generic and widely used approach. (II) The Oracle Webserver approach, which is a relatively simplified way of the CGI approach, easy to apply but limited in applications. (III) The CORBA-based approach, which is the most powerful and sophisticated approach for remote database access.

Show moreAfter comparing general architectures for accessing business databases from the Web, we propose a platform-independent, language-independent, object-oriented, fourtier CORBA-based architecture. The proposed architecture is presented in pattern format. Several security mechanisms are incorporated into the proposed architecture. A Web Reservation System (WRS) was created to test this architecture. Starting from an analysis pattern, a design model for the WRS was developed using the CORBA Object Request Broker (ORB); this was a Virtual Car Reservation System (VCRS). In the VCRS system, a user can get a reservation number when necessary information is entered from a Web browser. The user can also retrieve the reservation information by using the reservation number. All reservation information is stored in a distributed database system at a remote site. A realistic application of the proposed architecture is also described. We also provide an evaluation and comparison of the proposed architecture with other architectures.

Show moreIn certain applications, one needs to control physical plants that operate in hazardous conditions. In such situations, it is necessary to acquire access to the controller from a different (remote) location through data communication networks, in order to interconnect the remote location and the controller. The use of such network linking between the plant and the controller may introduce network delays, which would affect adversely the performance of the process control. The main theoretical contribution of this thesis is to answer the following question: How large can a network delay be tolerated such that the delayed closed-loop system is locally asymptotically stable? An explicit time-independent bound for the delay is derived. In addition, various practical realizations for the remote control tasks are presented, utilizing a set of predefined classes for serial communication, data-acquisition modules and stream-based sockets. Due to the presence of a network, implementing an efficient control scheme is a not trivial problem. Hence, two practical frameworks for Internet-based control are illustrated in this thesis. Related implementation issues are addressed in detail. Examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal approach.

Show moreAcademic advising is an important and time-consuming task and different tools and techniques can be used to make it an effective and efficient process. This thesis describes the design and development of a Web-based advising system that supplements the conventional advising process. The goals of the system include: to minimize repetitive tasks performed by advisors, to encourage students to adopt a proactive attitude towards advising, to make advising-related information available to remote students in a single place, in electronic format, and to minimize inconsistencies in the advising process. The system supports three different types of users (students, advisors, and secretaries). This thesis proposes a new Web-based advising system model. It also presents its architecture and an implementation of a prototype. Web-based advising system introduces a new approach towards advising over the Internet. Lessons learned from various experiments of the prototype are discussed in this thesis.
