Microcystin-LR (MCLR) is hepatotoxic to animals and humans with disruption of liver structure causing cytoskeletal damage, necrosis and pooling of blood in the liver, leading to large increase in liver weight. It is also a strong liver tumor promoter and protein phosphatase inhibitor. Microcysin-LR binds protein phosphatases 1 and 2A, and influences regulation of cellular protein phosphorylation. In the present study, a colloidal gold based immunoassay test strip was developed for Microcystin-LR detection. The detection limit was found to be 1 ng/mL. 5 nm colloidal gold test strips exhibits more efficient for detection, compared with 20 nm colloidal gold test strips. The interaction between Microcystin-LR antibody (immunoglobulin G) and colloidal gold nanoparticles was investigated by various analytical methods, including Ultraviolet/Visible (UV/VIS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Fluorescence spectroscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Show moreBarometric distillation is an alternative method of producing fresh water by desalination. This proposed process evaporates saline water at low pressure and consequently low temperature; low pressure conditions are achieved by use of barometric columns and condensation is by direct contact with a supply of fresh water that will be augmented by the distillate. Low-temperature sources of heat, such as the cooling water rejected by electrical power generating facilities, can supply this system with the latent heat of evaporation. Experiments are presented that show successful distillation with a temperature difference between evaporator and condenser smaller than 10ê C. Accumulation of dissolved gases coming out of solution, a classic problem in lowpressure distillation, is indirectly measured using a gas-tension sensor. The results of these experiments are used in an analysis of the specific energy required by a production process capable of producing 15 liters per hour. With a 20ê C difference, and neglecting latent heat, this analysis yields a specific energy of 1.85 kilowatt-hour per cubic meter, consumed by water pumping and by removal of non-condensable gases.

Pondhawk Natural Area (PNA) is located in densely populated Palm Beach County, Florida and was acquired through the County's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Acquisition Program as a protected natural area. In an effort to restore the natural area to pre-development conditions Palm Beach County will construct a wetland in the area where hydric conditions persisted prior to the extensive canal construction that lowered groundwater levels. Results of this study wi II provide initial characterization of hydrology and water quality of PNA before wetland construction and lay the groundwork for future monitoring and improvements.
