The purposes of this study were: (1) To determine each variable's individual relationship with students' persistence during the first semester of the freshman year at the Colegio Universitario de Cabimas, and (2) To generate a model to classify accurately persisters and non-persisters. Show moreThe purposes of this study were: (1) To determine each variable's individual relationship with students' persistence during the first semester of the freshman year at the Colegio Universitario de Cabimas, and (2) To generate a model to classify accurately persisters and non-persisters. The subjects were 187 students randomly selected from the population of students enrolled during the first semester of the academic year 1986-1987. A questionnaire was given to the students in the sample at the beginning of the second semester. A chi-square test was performed to examine each variable's individual relationship with persistence. Subsequently, a predictive discriminant analysis was conducted to consider models useful for predicting persistence and to examine the accuracy of such models. The results indicated that: (1) The variables related individually to persistence were age, marital status, distance from the student's residence to school, high school and freshman academic performance, educational goals, satisfaction with college services, satisfaction with social integration, the number of hours devoted to study, and employment status; (2) The only variable not found to relate individually to persistence was gender; and (3) The model that manifested the greatest accuracy correctly classified 78% of the non-persisters, 83% of the persisters and 81% of the total group. The six variables that constituted that model were: distance from the student's residence to school, financial assistance, high school performance, the number of hours devoted to study, frequency with which college services were used, and satisfaction with those services. All these separate-group and total-group classification accuracies were clearly statistically significant (p <.0001). Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are suggested: (1) Replication of this study in other three-year institutions and five-year universities in Venezuela is advisable. (2) The development of a dropout prevention plan that takes into account the discriminant variables identified in this study. (3) The application of the model generated to classify persisters and non-persisters in an initial screening to help students who are "at risk" for nonpersistence providing them with the services of a dropout prevention plan. (4) The testing of the other alternative accurate equations derived from this study. (5) Conduct future similar studies that would encompass other variables not included in this study.

Pentecostalization in Venezuela seems to take the form of growth in the Catholic Charismatic Movement. The study shows Châvez gained a majority of those whose self identified affiliation is evangelical as well as a majority of those who hold Pentecostal beliefs. The relationship between religion and voting patterns in the 1998 Venezuelan Presidential case has not been explored. The study does this, concluding that although Venezuela is by and large Pentecostalized, a desire in political and governmental change was the most salient reasons for Venezuelans when they voted for President in 1998.

This thesis reviews the impact and effects of United States foreign pol icy toward the dictatorial regime of Marcos Perez Jimenez, 1948-1958. Specifically, the thesis underlines the effects of "traditional" United States embracement of any leader so long as he devoutly professed anti-communism and protected United States business interests. The remaining chapters underscore the importance that petroleum played in United States-Venezuelan relation s during these years.

Imagine having to leave your home with just a few possessions. The world is currently witnessing a wave of mass migration, with nearly 65 million people being displaced because of war or persecution, and an even higher number migrating from poverty. This thesis uses design to visually articulate the personal narratives surrounding the struggles of flight and the significance of emotion to the debate on migrant identity, acculturation, and the perception of being the other, focusing on the current displacement crisis in Venezuela. The visual message making process of graphic design is used as a catalyst for social good with the intent to create a conversation and generate an experience and that promotes advocacy.

Some of the extensive literature on this subject is reviewed with the purpose of achieving insights into the special case of the Caracas barrios (Venezuelan low-income settlements, in their majority populated by squatters). An empirical analysis is carried out of several variables relating to physical development characteristics of the barrios. A Principal Components technique with Varimax rotation combined with regression analysis shows the diversity of the barrios and the importance of government approval in the upgrading of housing in these urban areas. These findings are important to planners for the prioritization and allocation of resources.

This thesis analyzed how the media's preference for conflict and individual personalities exacerbated overall societal tensions and polarization in Venezuela since 1999. Studies of populism consistently point to the role of natural resources and economic crises in predicting the rise of populist regimes. This study adds the concept of political learning by using measures of moderation in the current regime as a dependent variable and measures of oppression in earlier regimes as independent variables. Utilizing case studies of Venezuela and Chile as ideal types and plotting ten further cases on indicators of repression, military spending, corporate tax rates, government spending, the percent of votes going to moderates, and economic freedom scores from Freedom House, I argue that the likelihood of the rise of populist regimes is greater in countries that have not experienced the sort of intense political repression that generates political learning.

Set in 1963, in the fictional town of Desolasol, located on southeastern coast of Florida, the O'Brien family must cope with cultural, social and religious changes in order to adjust to life in the U.S. The story takes place over the course of one week in story present in Florida, and over the course of one year in story past in Venezuela. The protagonist, Meg, runs afoul of the gods, when she unwittingly incurs the wrath of Zeus, who, along with the Pantheon of Greek gods, is summering on the coast in Desolasol. Meg is a normal girl, without magical powers. However, to protect herself, and her family, she must become willing to stand up to Zeus.

Show moreThis thesis analyses the foreign economic policies of the Eisenhower and Kennedy administration toward Venezuela from 1957 to 1963. By examining material from U.S. diplomatic document collections, my research intervenes in the historiography of the Alliance for Progress by demonstrating the failures of U.S. policy in Venezuela during the Latin American Cold War. Although the United States supported the democratic government of Rómulo Betancourt politically, it hamstrung his government economically. The Kennedy administration at first provided loans for economic development to Venezuela, though they quickly eliminated this aid and began prioritizing military assistance as the most efficient way of supporting Betancourt’s government. More importantly, by continually limiting imports of Venezuelan oil into the United States, both the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations hurt Venezuela’s economy and caused Betancourt to face a crisis of legitimacy as his capacity to manage the nation’s natural wealth came into question.
