Show moreTemperament and its development have been associated with the alpha band of EEG coherence in previous research that focused on adolescent and adult populations, results suggest that this measure stands as a reliable indicator of emotional states. In the current study, five data sets from previously conducted studies were analyzed to determine if resting state alpha coherence measures differ in various brain regions and are associated with variation in levels of temperament. Additionally, we aimed to determine if, as age increases, a synchronous result in coherence may be seen (specifically, from posterior to anterior), in accordance with neurophysiological development. Regression analyses suggested that the negative affectivity temperamental qualities did not significantly associate with coherence. Repeated-measures analyses yielded significant results in favor of the electrocortical development hypothesis and, through exploratory analysis, more reactive temperament scores depicting positive affectivity, emotional/self-regulation, and activity level displayed in infants who had higher coherence in posterior regions. The study was suggestive of high coherence values associating with highly reactive temperamental attributes in posterior regions in the 3- to 12-month-old participants and higher coherence values displaying in posterior regions compared to anterior regions consistently across age groups.

Show moreThe ability to regulate emotional expression serves as an important mechanism in the adaptation of an individual. One important individual difference related to emotional regulation is agreeableness. We examined two competing theories that link agreeableness to the ability to control emotional reactivity when involved in an aggressive situation. The person-environment fit hypothesis emphasizes social behavior as a product of how the individual and situation interact with each other. The temperament hypothesis suggests that agreeableness is linked to temperamental bases of effortful control, specifically the regulation of anger. Female college students (N = 40) participated in a study that was designed to examine individual differences in emotional self-regulation in a simulated two person social interaction. Physiological responses to perceived aggression and observations of aggressive behavior were related to self-reports to examine hypotheses about links among personality and aggression. The patterns of results were different for high and low agreeable persons when they were targets of aggression.

Show morePrevious research has shown that the intrapersonal characteristics (e.g., temperament) of children are associated closely with alterations in the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary–adrenal (HPA) stress axis. However, consistently capturing direct associations between these characteristics and stress reactivity of the HPA axis has, at times, yielded disparate findings. Thus, using the Rothbart model of temperament (Rothbart & Derryberry, 1981) as a guide, the main goal of this project was to investigate and identify intrapersonal characteristics that moderate associations between other intrapersonal characteristics of the child and stress reactivity during development (e.g., trait by trait interactions). Additionally, study variables were assessed for meaningful associations and, on average differences between those who responded to the stressor paradigm and those who did not. A sample of 45 male and 37 female students (n=82, M= 9.66 yrs.) from six, fourth and fifth grade classes partook in a mathematically based stressor paradigm administered in the classroom. Salivary cortisol and behavior measures were collected in two waves over a 7-week period. Several significant results emerged. Overall, children who responded to the stressor paradigm had significantly higher levels of traits associated with a more inhibited behavioral style. Further, several meaningful interactions surfaced in which intrapersonal characteristics of various categories, including reactive, regulatory, and ambiguous, interacted with one another to predict stress reactivity. Of note, the majority of the interactions involved self-regulation and surgency. These two intrapersonal characteristics interacted with several others, helping to elucidate the unique influences of these intrapersonal characteristics on each other and, subsequently, stress reactivity of the HPA axis. These results illustrate that interactions between multiple intrapersonal characteristics should be taken into consideration in the future when studying the relationships between intrapersonal characteristics and stress reactivity of the HPA axis.

Factor analysis indicated that these seven dimensions also could be reduced to two factors, labeled Defiant Coping and Helpless Coping. Partial correlations (with the effect of age removed) showed a significant negative relation between Agreeable temperament (e.g., approachable, high mood quality) and Helpless Coping (e.g., fearful, compulsive compliance).

It is also thought that child temperament will be related to parental sensitivity to child's emotional cues and understanding as well as teaching strategies and joint decision making. Another prediction is that temperament affects joint attention between children and their parents. Previous research using aggregated dimensions of temperament have found a relation between child temperament and parent-child interaction, however, the relations between specific temperament variables and child attention and parent-child interactions have not been assessed. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that child temperament will be related to child behavior, parental behavior and to the level of joint attention between parent and child in the context of a task activity.

Child temperament was assessed using the Toddler Behavioral Assessment Questionnaire (TBAQ), a parental report instrument. The parent behaviors measured were the use of directives, praise and encouragement, and negative corrections. The child behavior measured was compliance to parental directives. Parent and child behaviors were coded from videotapes of observational sessions. Children's scores on two dimensions of the TBAQ were associated with parenting behavior: Children's scores on the pleasure dimension of temperament were positively associated with parental use of directives, and children's scores on the interest dimension of temperament were negatively associated with parental use of negative corrections. These findings suggest that parents' perceptions of their children's temperaments are associated with their parenting behavior toward their children.
