Show moreThe purpose of this thesis is to investigate the ability of using piping networks as a communication channel using power line communication transceivers. Two ways by which a piping network is able to propagate waves are investigated. The first wave propagation method is through the pipe shell. Using structural waves and PZT type transducers, data packets are sent and received through the propagation of structural waves in the pipe shell. However, because of the dispersive behavior of quasi flexural radial waves, the data packets are distorted. The second wave propagation method explored is acoustic waves in the enclosed fluid. The data packets are sent and received along the piping network using three types of hydrophones. The reliability of this method depends mostly on the sensitivity of the hydrophones.

Show moreAn Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) is described and its performance is evaluated in this thesis. First, the AIN architecture is presented. This is followed by the description of the operation and the creation of the telephone services in the AIN architecture. Finally, the AIN architecture is evaluated on the performance of the user-network interface and the network elements, and the expandability and cost effectiveness of the architecture. The result of the evaluation shows that the operation of the telephone services in the AIN architecture are acceptable according to the standards set by Bellcore. Therefore, the AIN architecture meets the objectives set by the telephone operating companies and provides a basis for faster development and deployment of new telephone services in a cost effective manner.

Show moreBody-proximate telecommunications devices are examined in both direct and multipath propagation. The study begins with a characterization of standard field strength sensitivity measurement methods for body-proximate telecommunications devices. Original measurements on a group of anthropometrically diverse people reveal that human adults, in a standard pose, are remarkably similar with respect to belt worn sensitivity performance, which motivates and justifies the use of an existing and a newly introduced light weight simulated human body device for testing, analysis and optimization of body worn telecommunications devices. Standard measurement methods using standard open air test ranges are established and validated by international transfers of measurements. The study extends to optimization of telecommunications devices in multipath, and particularly to the diversity reception of signals. A novel signal simulation model is introduced which includes multipath and shadowing, and is validated against both theoretical statistics and measurements. The signal simulation model is extended to characterize polarization randomization and cross-coupling based on an urban generalization of building height to street width ratio. The model is used to analyze measurements of polarization randomization of signals originating from an airborne transmitter flying a path whose geometry is consistent with low earth orbiting communications satellites.

Show moreThe research addressed and reported in this dissertation primarily refers to the scope of characterizing modern telecommunication services as complex systems. The qualifying attributes, which allow such a characterization are three-folded: (i) Size of the network supporting massive traffics; (ii) heterogeneous characteristics of the traffics constituted by a mix of data, voice and video transmissions; and (iii) quality of service (QOS) considerations as met by a variety resources. Commensurate with the scope of the research indicated above, the underlying principles of information-theoretics are adopted as the background concept of the studies performed and a complexity-metric is defined via entropy considerations. Hence, the following aspects of modern telecommunications are studied: The first one refers to using entropy as a metric to assess the traffic characteristics in ATM telecommunications. Relevant heterogeneous traffic is modeled and analyzed in terms of the complexity-metric. Impairment considerations (such as cell-losses) due to queueing and/or finite-buffer sizes are estimated via information-loss specifications. The results are compared with those of conventional queueing-theoretics based analysis. The second consideration uses the complexity-metric to implement the so-called call admission control (CAC) in ATM transmissions. The complexity-metric is considered as a decision-theoretic parameter and a fuzzy inference engine is constructed to facilitate a real-time CAC. The third contribution of this research is pertinent to the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) implemented to perform CAC using the complexity-metric as the training parameter characterizing the input calls, which compete to get admission into the network. The real-time performance of the ANN in such CAC implementations is demonstrated. The fourth effort of this research is directed to portray the cybernetic perspectives of a complex system. Again, the interacting structure of the technology and economics of telecommunication systems is considered and the associated complexity is elucidated in terms of the entropy profile of the subsystems. Hence, optimized (or suboptimal) alternative designs of a network based on technoeconomical considerations are obtained. This dissertation also includes relevant literature survey and background details. It concludes with a discussion on the results and inferences on the research carried out. Further, the scope for future study is identified and open-questions are enumerated.

The relevant efforts include the subject-matter of identifying the issues posed by emerging technologies, related revenue considerations and environmental issues in modern telecommunications practice specific to service providers' perspectives. The topic-wise problems studied and analyzed are as follows: (1) A comprehensive portrayal of managerial concerns and considerations on the technoeconomical perspectives vis-a-vis modern telecommunications; (2) Relevant analytical studies pertinent to: (1) "Greenfield starts" in a fresh, telecommunications deployment in a virgin service zone; (2) Embedded architectures; (3) Technology enhancements; (4) Environmental issues. The greenfield effort is analyzed to portray the feasibility of achieving technoeconomically optimal alternative designs. The embedded architecture refers to the prevailing infrastructure and their optimal usage is indicated via an arbitrated traffic-sharing technique. Concerning technology enhancements, "all-optical" technology is indicated as the ultimate goal. However, in the interim period, the optimal use of transitory technology such xDSL, MPLS, and others, is suggested and studied. Lastly, the environmental implications that coexist with technoeconomical impacts on modern telecommunications deployment are analyzed.

The goal of this study thereof is to emphasize efforts to establish the associated forecasting and, the envisioned tasks thereof include : (i) Reviewing the technoeconomic considerations prevailing in telecommunication (telco) service industry and their implicating features; (ii) studying relevant aspects of underlying complex system evolution (akin to biological systems), (iii) pursuant co-evolution modeling of competitive business structures using dichotomous (flip-flop) states as seen in predator evolutions ; (iv) conceiving a novel algorithm based on information-theoretic principles toward technoeconomic forecasting on the basis of modified Fisher-Kaysen model consistent with proportional fairness concept of comsumers' willingness-to-pay, and (v) evaluating forecast needs on inter-office facility based congestion sensitive traffics encountered. Commensurate with the topics indicated above, necessary algorithms, analytical derivations and compatible models are proposed. Relevant computational exercises are performed with MatLab[TM] using data gathered from open-literature on the service profiles of telecommunication companies (telco); and ad hoc model verifications are performed on the results. Lastly, discussions and inferences are made with open-questions identified for further research.

Algorithms on the CDV statistics are derived and the lower and upper bounds of the statistics are obtained via simulations in respect of CBR and VBR traffics. These bounds bounds are useful in the cell-admission control (CAC) strategies adapted in ATM transmissions. Inferential remarks indicating the effects of traffic parameters (such as bandwidth, burstiness etc.) on the values of the statistical bounds are presented, and scope for further work is indicated.

Show moreThis dissertation is concerned with studies on the performance aspects of mobile LEO satellite cellular systems. Relevant performance measures studied in the dissertation include new call blocking probability, handoff failure probability, call termination probability, and call dropping probability. The analytical teletraffic models available in the literature are generalized in this work in order to characterize the 3G systems more realistically. The effect of earth rotation on cell residence time is also investigated and a new cell residence time model is developed. The new model proposed uses right-truncated gamma distribution to describe the statistics of residence time in the origination cell; and, the generalized beta distribution is used to model the residence time in subsequent cells. A closed-form expression to determine the premature call termination and call dropping probabilities is proposed. The proposed expression requires only the cumulative distribution function of the call holding time and the first four moments of the cell residence time. In all the above probabilistic considerations, the arrival process is regarded as: (i) Poissonian implying voice-like traffic and (ii) non-Poissonian depicting inhomogeneous mix of voice, data, and video transmissions expected on a trunk traffic. The effect of factors that may affect the signal intensity on the performance of mobile LEO satellite cellular systems is also investigated. In particular, a mathematically tractable expression to approximate the moments of cell residence time in origination cell as well as in subsequent cells is developed based on the received signal power.

Specifically addressed thereof are: (i) Assessing the performance details on certain hardware sections of smart handheld devices and (ii) determining the performance profile of market penetration considerations vis-à-vis provisioning mobile networks. To meet the scope of this research, the projected efforts are exercised in compiling relevant literature and deciding the said hardware and technoeconomic performance issues. Hence, written in two parts, Part A is devoted to hardware performance details of smart, handheld devices relevant to (a) delay issues in PCB layouts; (b) crosstalk problems at the baseband level (audio/multimedia) using EMI concepts and (c) ascertaining non-catastrophic EMP/EMI effects at the RF-sections so as to implement protection strategies via compensating networks. Part B is concerned with the technoeconomics of wireless networks in supporting mobile (handheld devices). Correspondingly, two market related considerations versus service performance details are considered. The first one refers to deducing a relative performance index that includes technology (mobile speed) details plus economics profiles of the users in the service area. The second task refers to elucidating a performance index of such services in terms of hedonic pricing heuristics. The theoretical aspects of the test studies as above are supplemented with experimental and/or simulation details as appropriate. Hence, the efficacy of performance details are discussed in real-world applications. Lastly, possible research items for future studies are identified as open-questions.

The goal of our research is to design algorithms that maximize the use of available resources while providing robustness to primary users that could reclaim one or more channels. Our algorithms could be used in ad hoc networks, mesh networks, and sensor networks where nodes are equipped with multiple radios. We design algorithms for channel assignment which provide robustness to primary users without assuming an accurate primary user behavior model. We also compute bounds for capacity in grid networks and discuss how the capacity of a network changes when multiple channels are available. Since preserving energy is very important in wireless networks, we focus on algorithms that do not require powerful resources and which use a reduced number of messages.

Show moreThis thesis presents the simulation based performance evaluation on the transmission of multimedia services (H.264/AVC video streaming) to a mobile user over a packet-switched wireless network based on the WCDMA standard. The H.264/AVC refers to the codec, which is used as the main tool for video compression. It enables the transport of high bandwidth video data over Third Generation (3G) wireless systems by offering a high video compression rate, adaptability to the channel, and error resilience. It is transported using the RTP/UDP/IP protocol stack over the 3G wireless system. The WCDMA technology is simulated with special emphasis on the upper layers of the wireless channel. The performance of the WCDMA system is studied when transporting RTP/UDP/IP packets of H.264/AVC compressed video data under diverse configuration scenarios, namely, ARQ schemes and variable length of the transmitted frame at the link layer. These components of a packet-switched streaming service are integrated into a software simulation model, which is used to evaluate the end-to-end H.264/AVC video quality in a WCDMA wireless network.

The signature representations used include: synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) beamformed images, acoustic color plot images, and bispectral images. A relative Mean-Square Error (rMSE) performance metric and an effective Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNReff) performance metric have been developed and implemented to quantify the target differentiation. The analysis is performed on a subset of the synthetic sonar stave data provided by the Naval Surface Warfare Center - Panama City Division (NSWC-PCD). The subset is limited to aluminum and stainless steel, thin-shell, spherical targets in contact with the seafloor (proud). It is determined that the SAS signature representation provides the best, least ambiguous, target differentiation with a minimum mismatch difference of 14.5802 dB. The acoustic color plot and bispectrum representations resulted in a minimum difference of 9.1139 dB and 1.8829 dB, respectively

The author used data from ATMS.now signal system central software to illustrate how similar dashboards could be developed from any central software to enable operators to promptly and efficiently monitor various parameters of traffic signals. The main outcome of the study is a pair of Excel dashboards accompanied with appropriate user manual. The dashboards represent the tool for monitoring which can be helpful in the process of evaluation for traffic signal systems.

Show moreA promising next-generation version of service that could be availed from local exchange carriers (LECs) refers to streaming Internet protocol based television (IPTV) programs into subscriber premises via traditional copper pairs. The present study addresses provisioning economically-budgeted and optimally-engineered bit rates (EBRs) in implementing IPTV technology in the local-loop via copper-pairs using the so-called (ADSL2/ADSL2+) technology (with high-speed/large bandwidth considerations plus copper-bonding for bandwidth sharing capabilities). Also studied is the way to extend the backhaul transport of IPTV on copper-lines (plus any other local-loop transmissions that may co-exist) onto an "all-optical" trunk of the inter-office facilities (IOFs) in the edge/core network cloud of the telcos. A model of a core network topology is analyzed for traffic considerations so as to decide on blocking probability at a specified egress node under different conditions of burstiness. The problems posed are analyzed via computations/simulations on Matlab(TM) (v6.5). Inferential remarks are gathered, conclusions are drawn and open-questions yet to be researched are indicated.

Show moreThe rapid growth of satellite services using higher frequency bands such as the Ka-band has highlighted need for analyzing effects of different propagation phenomena. Since the wavelength of radiowaves is comparable with the size of rain drops, rain attenuation is the dominant propagation impairment at Ka frequencies. In addition, other impairments such as gaseous absorption, cloud and fog attenuation, tropospheric refractive effects, as well as depolarization become increasingly important with increasing operating frequency. Theoretical background of radiowave propagation principles, rain systems and gases in the atmosphere are presented to insure comprehension of propagation effects on space communication in Ka-band. Models for predicting rain attenuation and other propagation impairments along Earth-satellite path are provided in order to simplify design of communication systems. Propagation phenomena are explained on example of three propagation experiments performed in U.S., Europe and Japan. Whenever possible, mitigation techniques to overcome severe attenuations are introduced.

Batteries add size, weight, and upkeep costs, while also limiting the lifetime of devices that are preferred to be small, lightweight, and long-lasting. We present Apis, a software and hardware toolkit for federated power management in energy harvesting applications. By replacing batteries with rapid charging storage capacitors, circuitry to control federated energy storage, and software support to make this architecture useful to developers, embedded devices can potentially run inde nitely with limited maintenance. We present the Apis hardware design for controlling federated energy storage, supporting software for controlling this hardware, and the results of experiments performed to validate the Apis model. The system is named after the taxonomy genus for the honey bee, a creature dedicated to the harvesting and federated storage of energy resources.

Show moreThis work presents the development of the Context-Aware Hybrid Data Dissemination protocol for vehicular networks. The importance of developing vehicular networking data dissemination protocols is exemplified by the recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology. With emphasis on safety, other useful applications of V2V communication include but are not limited to traffic and routing, weather, construction and road hazard alerts, as well as advertisement and entertainment. The core of V2V communication relies on the efficient dispersion of relevant data through wireless broadcast protocols for these varied applications. The challenges of vehicular networks demand an adaptive broadcast protocol capable of handling diverse applications. This research work illustrates the design of a wireless broadcast protocol that is context-aware and adaptive to vehicular environments taking into consideration vehicle density, road topology, and type of data to be disseminated. The context-aware hybrid data dissemination scheme combines store-and-forward and multi-hop broadcasts, capitalizing on the strengths of both these categories and mitigates the weaknesses to deliver data with maximum efficiency to a widest possible reach. This protocol is designed to work in both urban and highway mobility models. The behavior and performance of the hybrid data dissemination scheme is studied by varying the broadcast zone radius, aggregation ratio, data message size and frequency of the broadcast messages. Optimal parameters are determined and the protocol is then formulated to become adaptive to node density by keeping the field size constant and increasing the number of nodes. Adding message priority levels to propagate safety messages faster and farther than non-safety related messages is the next context we add to our adaptive protocol. We dynamically set the broadcast region to use multi-hop which has lower latency to propagate safety-related messages. Extensive simulation results have been obtained using realistic vehicular network scenarios. Results show that Context-Aware Hybrid Data Dissemination Protocol benefits from the low latency characteristics of multi-hop broadcast and low bandwidth consumption of store-and-forward. The protocol is adaptive to both urban and highway mobility models.
