Show moreIn this thesis we extend the VANET-based approach to counting vehicles at a traffic light by implementing a Geo-fence Based Vehicle Counting Algorithm which supports the use of RFID technology. This implementation utilizes the concept of geo-fencing to create a Zone of Interest (ZOI) that sections off a roadway that is relevant to a traffic intersection. All vehicles in this ZOI are used to determine the required length of the green-cycle time. By utilizing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technologies, we broadcast beacons that are propagated to all vehicles in the ZOI from the infrastructure which in this case is the traffic light controller. These beacons are used to determine the last vehicle location in the ZOI. A timing algorithm ensures that the last vehicle broadcasts first. The beacons are sent using the IEEE 1609.4 Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments Standard Vendor Specific Action (VSA) frames on the Smart Drive Initiative Vehiclular Ad Hoc Networks testbed. This work is implemented in conjunction with the Vehicular Multi-technology Communication Device (VMCD) supported by the National Science Foundation.

The identification scheme involves two steps; (1) The identification of a set of invariant indices (Structure identification) and (2) The estimation of the parameters of the system (Parametric identification). The technique utilizes a canonical representation of a system which is based on the notion of output injection. This canonical form is dependent on a chosen real number alpha and is therefore called the alpha-canonical form. Least square estimation technique is used for parameter estimation. The off-line version of this identification scheme is presented here. This scheme is then used to generate a linear model of the Space Shuttle Main Engine at the operating point corresponding to the 100% power level from the nonlinear dynamic engine simulation.

Show moreThis document reports on a hands-on project aimed at learning and experiencing the concept of system-of-systems. The motivation behind this project is to study and implement the concept of System of Systems in the generation of a RF-based communication and control complex system. The goal of this project is to develop a multi-level integrated and complete system in which the vehicles that belong to a same network can become aware of their location, communicate with nearby vehicles (sometimes with no visible line of sight), be notified of the presence of different objects located in their immediate vicinity (obstacles, such as abundant vehicles), and generate a two dimensional representation of the vehicles’ location for a remote user. In addition, this system will be able to transmit back messages from the remote user to a specific or to all local vehicles. The end result is a demonstration of a complex, functional, and robust system built and tested for other projects to use and learn from.

Its progress has brought in a large number of civilian and government applications. The candidate modalities used in biometrics include retinas, fingerprints, signatures, audio, faces, etc. There are two types of biometric system: single modal systems and multiple modal systems. Single modal systems perform person recognition based on a single biometric modality and are affected by problems like noisy sensor data, intra-class variations, distinctiveness and non-universality. Applying multiple modal systems that consolidate evidence from multiple biometric modalities can alleviate those problems of single modal ones. Integration of evidence obtained from multiple cues, also known as fusion, is a critical part in multiple modal systems, and it may be consolidated at several levels like feature fusion level, matching score fusion level and decision fusion level. Among biometric modalities, both audio and face modalities are easy to use and generally acceptable by users. Furthermore, the increasing availability and the low cost of audio and visual instruments make it feasible to apply such Audio-Visual (AV) systems for security applications. Therefore, this dissertation proposes an algorithm of face recognition. In addition, it has developed some novel algorithms of fusion in different levels for multiple modal biometrics, which have been tested by a virtual database and proved to be more reliable and robust than systems that rely on a single modality.

Of these eight were well-known pest ants with worldwide distributions: Paratrechina longicornis, Tetramorium simillimum, Monomorium pharaonis, Monomorium subopacum, Monomorium destructor, Tapinoma melanocephalum, Pheidole megacephala, and Tetramorium bicarinatum. Three others, Camponotus sp., Pheidole sp., and Solenopsis sp., not identified to species were probably native species. Paratrechina longicornis and M. subopacum were the two most dominant species that were found in the highest abundance.

The problem addressed in this thesis is the identification of a given video clip in a given set of videos. For a given query video, the system returns all the instance of the video in the data set. This identification system uses video signatures based on video tomography. A robust and low complexity video signature is designed and implemented. The nature of the signature makes it independent to the most commonly video transformations. The signatures are generated for video shots and not individual frames, resulting in a compact signature of 64 bytes per video shot. The signatures are matched using simple Euclidean distance metric. The results show that videos can be identified with 100% recall and over 93% precision. The experiments included several transformations on videos.

Show moreThis dissertation introduces our work on face recognition using a novel approach based on creating 3D face model from 2D face images. Together with the pose angle estimation and illumination compensation, this method can be used successfully to recognize 2D faces with 3D recognition algorithms. The results reported here were obtained partially with our own face image database, which had 2D and 3D face images of 50 subjects, with 9 different pose angles. It is shown that by applying even the simple PCA algorithm, this new approach can yield successful recognition rates using 2D probing images and 3D gallery images. The insight gained from the 2D/3D face recognition study was also extended to the case of involving 2D probing and 2D gallery images, which offers a more flexible approach since it is much easier and practical to acquire 2D photos for recognition. To test the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the public AT&T face database, which had 2D only face photos of 40 subjects, with 10 different images each, was utilized in the experimental study. The results from this investigation show that with our approach, the 3D recognition algorithm can be successfully applied to 2D only images. The performance of the proposed approach was further compared with some of the existing face recognition techniques. Studies on imperfect conditions such as domain and pose/illumination variations were also carried out. Additionally, the performance of the algorithms on noisy photos was evaluated. Pros and cons of the proposed face recognition technique along with suggestions for future studies are also given in the dissertation.

This study compared identification and gender judgments of traditional point-light stimuli to skeleton stimuli. Controlling for previous experience and execution of actions, the frequency and familiarity of movements was also considered. Watching action clips, participants learned to identify 4 male and 4 female actors. Participants then identified the corresponding point-light or skeleton displays. Although results indicate higher than chance performance, no difference was observed between stimuli conditions. Analyses did show better gender recognition for common as well as previously viewed actions. This suggests that visual experience influences extraction and application of biological motion. Thus insufficient practice in relying on movement cues for identification could explain the significant yet poor performance in biological motion point-light research.

Current surveillance systems are equipped with low resolution cameras and are located in places with changing illumination, as opposed to a controlled environment. To be used in face recognition, images extracted from videos need to be normalized, enlarged and preprocessed. There is a multitude of processing algorithms for image enhancement, and each algorithm faces its advantages and disadvantages. This thesis presents a novel method for image enlargement of human faces applied to low quality video recordings. Results and comparison to traditional methods are also presented.

In this thesis an extension for these methods is presented; first a new feature extraction method, derived from the previously proposed sampling pattern, is implemented and tested, resulting in a highly distinctive set of signature elements, second a robust temporal video segmentation system is used to replace the original method applied to determine shot changes more accurately. Under a very exhaustive set of tests the system was able to achieve 99.58% of recall, 100% of precision and 99.35% of prediction precision.

System identification as well as artificial neural networks are utilized to carried out the tasks. The data for a six months operational period of both plants are utilized. The prediction error method and subspace method are utilized to estimate state-space model while the auto regression with extra input (ARX) model is estimated by using the least square method and the approximately optimal four-stage instrumental variable method. The training algorithms for artificial neural networks are based on backpropagation and radial basis network function (RBNF). The implementation of each methodology is performed step by step and finally, the results from both methodologies are analyzed and discussed. The results of the proposed study indicate that both system identification and neural networks algorithms can predict the outputs of both RO plants with the acceptable accuracy. Among all methodologies utilized in the thesis, the least square method for the auto regression with the extra input (ARX) model, can provide the best prediction for both RO plants.

We extend its application to non-stationary signals and develop the multitaper spectrogram. We test the spectrograms with simulated non-stationary autoregressive process of order 2 as the magnitude of its poles vary between 0 and 1 and the angle of the poles vary between 0 and pi. Our results show that the multitaper spectral estimate can be parameterized and is more accurate than others tested for non-sinusoidal signals. We also show applications to aero-acoustic data analysis.

Show moreSystem identification methods are frequently used to obtain appropriate models for the purpose of control, fault detection, pattern recognition, prediction, adaptive filtering and other purposes. A number of techniques exist for the identification of linear systems. However, real-world and complex systems are often nonlinear and there exists no generic methodology for the identification of nonlinear systems with unknown structure. A recent approach makes use of highly interconnected networks of simple processing elements, which can be programmed to approximate nonlinear functions to identify nonlinear dynamic systems. This thesis takes a detailed look at identification of nonlinear systems with neural networks. Important questions in the application of neural networks for nonlinear systems are identified; concerning the excitation properties of input signals, selection of an appropriate neural network structure, estimation of the neural network weights, and the validation of the identified model. These questions are subsequently answered. This investigation leads to a systematic procedure for identification using neural networks and this procedure is clearly illustrated by modeling a complex nonlinear system; the components of the space shuttle main engine. Additionally, the neural network weights are determined by using a general purpose optimization technique known as evolutionary programming which is based on the concept of simulated evolution. The evolutionary programming algorithm is modified to include self-adapting step sizes. The effectiveness of the evolutionary programming algorithm as a general purpose optimization algorithm is illustrated on a test suite of problems including function optimization, neural network weight optimization, optimal control system synthesis and reinforcement learning control.

After physical light model verification, the filter estimated surge, sway, and heading with 6 irradiance sensors and a low cost inertial measurement unit (~$15). Physical testing with video feedback suggests an average error of ~2cm in surge and sway, and ~3deg in yaw, over a 1200 cm2 operational area. This is 2-3 times better, and more consistent, than adaptations of prior art tested alongside the extended Kalman filter feedback system. The physical performance of the biomimetic platform was also tested. It has a repeatable forward velocity response with a max of 0.3 m/s and fair stability in surface testing conditions.

This project is a demonstration of the use of design patterns as a common way to organize objects to make practical design decisions helping to generate flexible, manageable and agile software architectures. Due to the continuity and unpredictability of its requirements, the Biometric Industry is appropriate to illustrate of the use of design patterns and object oriented analysis. First, the conceptual model of an Electronic Fingerprint Service establishes the vocabulary for discussing how a system is constructed. Since good design decisions eventually result in a good design model, this model is used to leverage the object reused when requirements change. The Electronic Biometric Services model demonstrates how by applying design patterns, the system can gain the flexibility and agility required to grow and change according to new requirements.

The basic electromagnetic properties of human tissues are investigated at 403 .5 MHz. Then, the radiation characteristics of submerged wire antenna are evaluated in order to approximate the effects of multilayered media on a PIFA's performance. The PIFA is assessed using Ansoft's Finite Element Method based electromagnetic evaluation software, HFSS v.l 0. The electrical parameters of the antenna in relation to the surrounding environment, notably air, silicone capsule, and a three-layered bio-media, are presented. The analysis shows that the resonant frequency as well as the electrical performance of the design is significantly affected by the physical dimensions and the relative permittivity of the dielectric materials covering the antenna.

Show moreIn past and recent literature, random access protocols have been investigated with growing interest. In particular, the Slotted ALOHA protocol has been extensively used in satellite communications, and has also attracted considerable attention in many areas of wireless communication systems, especially in the cellular mobile environment. In this thesis, we investigate the performance of Slotted ALOHA, an effective random access protocol, in a Weibull fading environment. We study the performance metrics based on the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) model, in a cellular network system, assuming two captures models. The capture effect, also called co-channel interference tolerance, is the ability to correctly receive a strong signal from one transmitter despite significant interference from other transmitters. We derive closed-formed expressions and numerical evaluations for both the capture probability and the system throughput. he analytical results will be validated with computer simulations. Finally, to mitigate the effects of Weibull fading channel we also consider the effect of dual selection diversity that will increase the capture probability and the system throughput.
