Show moreThis study discusses the theoretical and methodological issues in the diversification-performance literature and presents a meta-analysis of 50 studies with 169 separate effects of the diversification-performance relationship. The overall objective of this study was to answer the primary question: What is the relationship between diversification strategies and corporate performance? In addition, this study aimed to determine if the inconsistencies found in the diversification-performance relationship across studies is attributable to moderator variables such as: (1) measurement of diversification, (2) measurement of performance, (3) source of data, (4) time period, and (5) industry effects. A final objective of this study was to illustrate the usefulness of meta-analytic techniques for reviewing and synthesizing empirical literature in strategic management. The results suggest that related diversified firms have higher accounting- and market-based returns and lower levels of total risk than unrelated diversified firms. These results are consistent with the predictions of agency theories of diversification. The results further indicate that related diversifiers have lower levels of systematic risk than unrelated diversifiers, a result consistent with the predictions of the traditional strategic management perspective of diversification. The results of the subgroup and combined meta-analyses of moderator effects indicate that the use of different measures of diversification (e.g., Rumelt's categories vs. SIC-based continuous), different measures of performance (accounting- vs. market-based), and source of data (e.g., primary vs. secondary) significantly influenced the relationship between diversification strategies and performance. The relationship was not affected by the time period of studies or industry effects. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for practice and for future research.

Show moreKnowledge is a resource and an important asset that organizations leverage to attain their goals. In a competitive environment, efficient and effective transfer of knowledge within the firm is a strategic imperative. In each organization a system through which knowledge flows, arises by design and enactment. Like other resources, knowledge resources should flow to where they are needed, when they are needed. The flow of knowledge resources depends upon contextual characteristics of both the organization and the knowledge itself. This dissertation investigates characteristics that affect the internal flow of organizational knowledge between departments and types of employees. The study of knowledge transfer lies within the domain of knowledge management, linking strategy, organization theory and organizational cognition research. Effective knowledge management systems enhance strategy implementation and help maximize returns on organizational knowledge. These systems can offer the firm competitive advantage in speed and navigability. Knowledge management has broad theoretical scope. For this research, I draw upon theory concerning business policy and strategy (the resource-based view of the firm, competitive advantage, strategic orientation), organizational theory and cognition (bounded rationality, organizational knowledge, event management, sensemaking), information technology (media richness, communication technology) and epistemology (critical naturalism). I offer a testable model that describes how (a) departmental membership influences; (b) strategic orientation, locus of attention, communication media, sources of meaning and perceived knowledge impedance characteristics that affect; (c) knowledge discernment behavior to determine; (d) the performance of organizational knowledge transfer. The theory offers managers a somewhat rational approach to understanding and manipulating knowledge flows in order to alter the performance of knowledge assets in their firm.

Show moreThe most effective planners in both the private and the public sector are those who are best at strategic planning. Although strategic planning is easier to apply to the private sector, it is becoming the dominant paradigm in the public sector as well. Because politics tend to dominate the planning process in the public sector, successful strategic planning is more difficult to accomplish. School districts are spending an increasing amount of time and resources on planning. It is believed that planning processes that include demographic representation on strategic planning teams will allow school districts to use visionary and strategic thinking, leading to the achievement of consistent and planned results. The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant relationship exists between selected demographic characteristics of action teams and the acceptance of the action plans by the strategic planning team. A review of the related literature includes the history of strategic planning, comparison of private sector and public sector strategic planning, examination of strategic planning in public education, and an overview of stakeholder participation. The study was done during the action team phase of a strategic planning process undertaken by one of the nation's largest public school districts. Two hundred and sixteen action team members were asked to complete and return a three part evaluation instrument. One hundred and sixty nine surveys were returned, comprising a 78 percent response rate. A multiple regression was used to predict acceptance of plans by the strategic planning team from a model composed of demographic characteristics of action team members. Of the six hypotheses tested there were no significant relationships between selected demographic characteristics of action team members and the measure of acceptance of action plans by the strategic planning team. Public school districts may find this study useful as they prepare to do long-range or strategic planning.

Show moreThis thesis presents a model designed to optimize the allocation of corporate resources required for the success of a product in the marketplace. The product development resources used in the model are: market research, applied research, product design, cost reduction and advertising. The key goals of this thesis are to provide industry with a usable tool: (1) Implement strategic plans through effective budgeting; (2) Optimize both short and long term profits; (3) Evaluate the impact of resource inter-dependencies; (4) Enable accountability that leads to goal achievement and checks unnecessary growth; (5) Remove much of the negative political and emotional variability; (6) Easily adapt to internal and external changes; (7) Output a specific allocation for each resource as a percentage of sales; (8) Output an estimate of future profitability. Genetic Algorithms are particularly well suited for this application because an exact optima is not required and the search space can be extremely large, complex, and non-linear.

Show moreThe purpose of this mixed method study was to understand how demographic fit, organizational fit, and group fit influenced secondary school assistant principal (AP) selection and assimilation for candidates who completed the Paradise School District (pseudonym) leadership training program during the 2004-2005 to 2008-2009 school years. However, the results indicated that Hispanic candidates were selected at a higher rate than other groups of candidates. The results also indicated that Black candidates were selected at the same rate as the average for all candidates ; however these results may be misleading because Black candidates were disproportionally over-represented in the study sample. Regarding organizational fit, the study results suggested that candidates who indicated one of three specific Myers-Briggs personality types (ESTJ, ENTJ, or ENFP) were selected at higher rates than candidates of the other 13 personality types. The suggested personality traits for secondary school APs found in this study included (a) Extroversion (E), (b) Feeling (F), and (c) Judging (J). Candidates who referenced more than one hiring administrator, at or above the level of principal, were selected at higher rates than candidates who referenced only one principal. The inverviews suggested balancing the demographics of a school's administrative staff, using gender and race/ethnicity, to the the community the school serves was related to selection. The interviews also disclosed that Black, Hispanic, and candidates with expertise in operations and curricula might be suggested over other candidates. The interviews also suggested that networking, sponsorship, interview impressions, and references were related to the selection processes.

Show moreAligning information technology (lT) strategy with business strategy has been one of the top concerns of practitioners and scholars. Despite the documented positive effects of strategic alignment on organizational success, only few organizations consider themselves in alignment. Although numerous studies exist about IT-business alignment, the empirical studies based on strong theories have been rare in the alignment literature. This dissertation attempts to fulfill this gap by proposing and empirically validating a comprehensive strategic alignment model. Drawing on prior literature, we identified five antecedents of alignment; centralization, formalization , shared domain knowledge, successful IT history and relationship management. We further hypothesized that the effects of these antecedents are mediated by the drivers of alignment, which are conceptualized as the level of connection of lT and business planning and the level of communication between IT and business managers. Furthermore, the proposed research model investigated the moderating effects of goal commitment of business executives to achieving and sustaining strategic alignment and environmental uncertainty. The results showed that both drivers had significant effects on alignment, and the effect of connection is about twice that of communications. Our findings also support for the effects of all antecedents except centralization. Finally, we found partial support for the effects of moderating variables. Overall, the main contribution of this dissertation is the development and empirical validation of a comprehensive strategic alignment model with considerations for antecedents and potential moderating effects, thus extending the alignment literature by differentiating the effects of dimensions of environmental uncertainty as well as introducing the goal commitment and IT unit structure constructs, and providing prescriptive insight for managing IT-business strategic alignment.

Show moreNot much is known about factors of firm performance in emerging economies (EEs). This study investigates two variables that individually and in combination are posited to affect firms in these turbulent environments: receptivity to the influence of trade associations and dynamic knowledge capabilities. It examines the impact of these determinants on three self-reported measures of performance: innovation adoption, a particularly important indicator in EE environments; and two other dependent variables traditionally used in strategy research: profitability (measured as return on sales), and comparative performance (a self-rating of the firm's performance in comparison to its main industry's competitors). The study also attempts to shed light on the effects of perceived environmental uncertainty as a potential moderator. Five hypotheses drawn from the literature are tested with moderated hierarchical regression. Results indicate support for the two main hypotheses in the case of the innovation adoption measure. Moderation effects are also found in the association between receptivity to the influence of trade associations and innovation adoption. Finally, the study contributes with proposed scales for the two independent variables, which are tested and validated, and with a re-examination of the existing scale for perceived environmental uncertainty.

Show morePublic Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are facing many challenges including state funding, competition, and maintaining the best possible graduation rate. This study: (1) examined the strategic plans and strategic planning processes to explore how, and to what extent, these tool are being used to address these challenges; and (2) explored the extent to which continuous process improvement is included in strategic planning efforts. A qualitative research design employing a grounded theory approach was used in this study. The researcher reviewed the perceptions of the participants at each of four selected public institutions regarding strategic planning processes, including their beliefs with regard to process improvement as a component of the strategic planning process. Perceived facilitators and detractors of strategic planning and its implementation were also examined. Finally, the researcher sought to design an improved model for strategic planning in higher education that takes continuous process improvement into consideration as a basic component of the approach to planning. The dominant theme that emerged from the data analysis concerned state funding, as performance-based funding offers an opportunity to acquire additional funds. Graduation rate was identified as a core component of student success. Competition from emerging sectors was not a specific topic of discussion during the strategic planning processes. Forty-one percent of participants indicated that some form of process improvement structure exists at their institution, often related to accreditation reviews and was outside of the strategic planning process. 53% of the responses to the question, “What do you believe would be the impact of having process improvement as an integral component in the strategic planning process?” replied that it would be good or beneficial if it were carried out in a meaningful manner. Twenty-nine percent of the 53% stated that process improvement efforts are often performed for it’s own sake, and that including process improvement in the strategic planning process should be done in a manner that adds value to the strategic planning process and the institution. Through the analysis of the approaches to strategic planning examined in this study, the researcher offers a new strategic planning model for HEIs grounded in the findings.

Show moreThe purpose of the current manuscript was to examine acquirer and market behavior surrounding a sample of international mergers and acquisitions. The first essay examined the existence of a private company discount and its connections to liquidity. It found that unlisted targets sell for less than their public counterparts, confirming earlier findings. The examination of a connection between the discount and liquidity mostly contradicted earlier studies (Officer 2007), depending on which subsample was selected. The second essay examined the existence of a target price runup preceding acquisitions announcements, existence of a substitution effect between runup and premium, and whether investor protection influenced the two. It confirmed the earlier findings of a significant runup preceding acquisition announcements, with the runup being more pronounced in those targets from weaker investor protection countries. Contrary to Schwert (1996), the study found a significant substitution effect between runup and premium, with the effect stronger if the acquirers are from countries with weak investor protection. The third essay examined acquirer stock price reaction to the three different components of the offer price: target's stand-alone valuation, pre-announcement runup and the offer premium. Each component was found to have an overall insignificant effect on the acquirer stock price in the overall sample. When the targets were from the countries with the weakest investor protection, the study found that the reaction to both the runup and stand-alone target valuation depend on both target and acquirer country investor protection. The study also found that when the targets were from the countries with the weakest investor protection, and only from those countries, acquirer stock price reacted negatively to any individual component of the offer price being higher., Overall, the three studies confirm that behavior of both acquirer management and their stock markets i affected by the variance in investor protection among countries.

Entrepreneurial alertness has been widely argued as fundamental to the opportunity identification process, yet this relationship remains largely unverified by empirical evidence. This study provides an explicit investigation into the implications of entrepreneurial alertness for opportunity identification as well as how metacognitive factors moderate the proposed relationship. First, Chapter 1 provides an overview the purpose, research questions, the significance of the study, and the conceptual framework. Next, a comprehensive review of the existing literature on opportunity identification is provided which is followed by the development of theoretical arguments, associated hypotheses, and the conceptual model. Subsequently, and overview of the research methodology and sampling procedure is presented. Finally, the analyses and results presented followed by a discussion, future research, and conclusions.

Show moreUtilizing a modified Delphi Technique research study, consensus was sought from 298 practitioners in the public assembly facility management (PAFM) industry regarding their perceptions on varied matters connected to the academic preparation of managers/executives serving the industry. A comprehensive literature review and a prior pilot study were conducted for the purpose of creating the initial survey (Questionnaire 1). The pilot study consisted of an open-ended interview session with a panel (N=16) of PAFM managers. Sixty-four (64) of 66 consensus-seeking items attained consensus from the respondents (N=298) after Questionnaire 1 results were tabulated. Respondents were given the opportunity to re-assess their Questionnaire 1 choices in Questionnaire 2 and if compelled, change them. Items related to Kinesiology and Physical Education did not attain consensus status in Questionnaire 1 or Questionnaire 2. This study concluded: a) academic program in PAFM is beneficial to the industry (96%) and 63.5% viewed the degree as very important or essential; b) the preferred academic delivery level was Bachelors/undergraduate (52.7%); c) the degree program should be housed in Business (42%); d) the preferred competencies and skill sets were identified; e) the preferred course components were identified., Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the type of public assembly facility where a respondent worked and the preferred academic unit of the program, as well as preferred general course components. Recommendations for future research include: (a) conducting a similar study employing solely qualitative methodology; (b) seeking potential significant relationships with gender, ethnicity, geographic location, ownership and governance of facilities, years of experience; and (c) comparing and contrasting results of this study among faculty who currently teach public assembly facility management courses and the students that are in said courses . The rising cost of providing safe and cost-efficient public assembly facilities require that the people operate these facilities possess the best set of managerial, administrative and technical skills related to the management of these facilities; this study aids in that quest by suggesting competencies and course components, and potentially a PAFM general academic curriculum, based on practitioner viewpoint.

Policy actors, philanthropists, and academics from across the political spectrum work on various policy solutions, creating a policy environment that is complex and often contentious. Incrementalists claim that major policy reform is unlikely since unknown variables and inexplicable events can stall or dismantle policy initiatives. In such environments, policy entrepreneurs—those individuals who advocate for policy innovation, work for change, and help shape policy solutions from within and without government—try to break through the barriers of incremental politics. As important as this role is to the influencing and structuring of higher educational policy, it has not yet been explored. This study fills this gap in the extant literature by cataloging the characteristics and skills that enable higher education policy entrepreneurs at the state and national levels to persevere and accomplish sustainable and innovative higher education reforms over time.

Show moreMany factors contribute to the outcome of an acquisition; these factors arise from both the objective of the target and acquirer. This dissertation focuses on how the bidding strategy, acquirer and target characteristics impact the transaction. The first essay examines how the timing and size of the acquirer's bid for a U.S. target firm impacts their return. I find that successful first and low bid acquirers experience significantly larger returns than successful secondary and non-low bid acquirers. The cross-sectional analysis determines that higher levels of target institutional ownership and acquisitions completed prior to the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley result in reduced returns to the acquirer. In addition, the likelihood of a successful first bid acquirer increases with a revised bid and when the acquirer is both the first and low bid acquirer simultaneously. The likelihood of a successful first bid acquirer decreases as the number of bidders increases and as the bidding process lengthens. I also find that the likelihood of a successful low bid acquirer increases the longer the bidding process. The second essay examines how the timing and size of the acquirer's bid for an international target impacts their return. I find that successful first and low bid acquirers experience insignificant abnormal returns following the acquisition announcement. In addition, the likelihood of a successful first bid acquirer increases when the acquirer and target have similar cultures, with higher levels of target government corruption and when the acquirer is both the first and low bid acquirer simultaneously. The likelihood of a successful low bid acquirer decreases with higher levels of target government corruption. I also examine what factors affect the target premium and find that larger transactions and successful first bid acquirers increase the target premium., Conversely, similar cultures and higher levels of government corruption, rule of law, bureaucracy, expropriation and ethnic tension decrease the premium to the target. Lastly, successful first and low bid acquirers experience statistically larger long run abnormal returns than successful secondary and non-low bid acquirers. The third essay examines how a stake accumulation by a conflicted blockholder influences the target's return. I find that targets experience positive cumulative abnormal returns upon the announcement of the Family, ESOP, Management and High Profile Investor stake accumulation. The cross-sectional analysis determines that privately negotiated transactions reduce the return to the target and that higher levels of stake accumulation are positively related to the target's return. Finally, targets experience negative abnormal long run returns following all four types of stake accumulation.

Show moreThe impact of executive cognitive bases and values on corporate strategic change was examined in a longitudinal study of the computer hardware industry. Corporate strategic change was separated into pattern and magnitude dimensions as suggested by Ginsberg (1988). These dimensions complement the logic of Tushman and Romanelli (1985) who suggest that organizations proceed through long periods of stability or adjustment, punctuated by periods of metamorphic change or reorientation. I proposed that executive cognitive bases and values would be associated with strategic reorientation but not strategic adjustment since executive perceptions and responses are the internal driving forces that direct and redirect organizations (Romanelli & Tushman, 1988). Panel data analysis techniques were used to test the hypotheses developed in this study. Corporate strategic reorientation and adjustment were operationalized by changes in unrelated and related diversification, and changes in between-stage and within-stage vertical integration, respectively. The mean organization tenure and functional background heterogeneity of top management teams were used as proxies for executive cognitive bases and values. Results provided overall support for the hypotheses. Mean organization tenure was negatively related to unrelated diversification change, while neither mean organization tenure nor functional background heterogeneity were associated with related diversification change. Functional background heterogeneity was positively related to between-stage vertical integration change, however, contrary to expectations, it was negatively related to within-stage vertical integration change. These findings confirm and extend the literature which relates managerial characteristics to strategic change.

The goal of the study was to identify elements of strategic planning processes that meet the unique organizational features and complexities of a higher education institution. The study employed a holistic, multi-case study approach, wherein three single case studies were conducted with one unit of analysis. The findings in each case were then compared and contrasted to provide more evidence and confidence in the findings. The findings are framed by two constructs : strategic planning and strategic thinking. The conceptual framework for the study identified the distinction between the systematic nature of strategic planning and the more integrated perspective of strategic thinking. Traditional business based strategic planning model uses an analytical process, logic, linear thinking and a calculating process to develop a plan. Strategi c thinking places a premium on synthesis, systems thinking and a social cognitive process that results in an integrated perspective of the organization. The resluts of this study indicate that the use of the Strategic Thinking Protocolà is suitable for higher education organizations to create a learning environment, to implement creative and emergent strategies, that result in the organization's positioning and responses to a rapidly changing environment. The strategic thinking process in both the department and college cases were found to be effective in altering the attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviors of the participants. The integration of the plan is an ongoing process with strong beginnings in both the department and college cases., The traditional strategic planning process used in the university case was found not to be an effective model for higher education organizations. Finally, the inclusion of strategic thinking elements is an effective change model for higher education institutions.

A non-experimental quantitative study design was employed. The study consisted of 400 graduates of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program. The use of strategic thinking skills was measured by the Strategic Thinking Questionnaire (STQv6) (Pisapia & Reyes-Guerra, 2007). The use of information and communication technology tools was measured by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Fluency Questionnaire (Hilberg, 2007). The EFOs' strategic thinking capabilities of systems thinking (3.58 +/- .447) and reflecting (3.82 +/- .445) compared to previously reported samples from the literature, both empirically and theoretically. Depending upon the sample, some means were significantly higher and others were significantly lower. The strategic thinking questionnaire and the ICT fluency questionnaire were not directly correlated to one another ; however, there were some strong correlations within their subscales. ICT fluency and ICT comfort were highly correlated (r = .516), as well as systems thinking and reflecting (r = .688) at the 0.05 level. There was a significant correlation between age and ICT comfort (r = -.235), as well as between years of experience and ICT comfort (r = -.203) at the 0.05 level. Age moderated the relationship between systems thinking*reflection, and ICT comfort. Race moderated the relationship between systems thinking*reflection, and ICT education/training. This research was significant because it was the first time that Executive Fire Officers have been studied regarding their strategic thinking capabilities and their information and communications technology fluency.

- Agency costs and accounting quality within an all-equity setting: the role of free cash flows and growth opportunities.

I investigate if all-equity firms are a heterogeneous group as it relates to agency costs and accounting quality. Show moreI investigate if all-equity firms are a heterogeneous group as it relates to agency costs and accounting quality. All-equity firms are a unique group of firms that choose a “corner solution” as their capital structure. Extant research, supported by well-established theories such as trade-off theory, free cash flow theory, and Jensen’s (1986) control hypothesis, generally conclude that agency conflicts motivate such structure. Research also supports the alternative argument that poor accounting quality makes debt so prohibitive that such firms are driven to this capital structure. I propose that an all-equity structure is not necessarily symptomatic of agency conflicts and poor accounting quality overall. I investigate if different motivations, within an all-equity setting, reflected by free cash flows and growth opportunities, result in different levels of agency cost and accounting quality. By anchoring on theories that link implicit costs of debt to free cash flow levels and growth opportunities, I hypothesize that free cash flows and growth opportunities are strongly linked to the justification or lack thereof for the pursuit of such strategy. I hypothesize and show that firms in the extremes of the free cash flow to growth rate spectrum exhibit significantly different levels of agency cost and accounting quality within the all-equity setting. These results support my main prediction that there exists agency costs and accounting quality differences within the all-equity setting which are associated with free cash flow levels and growth opportunities and that the pessimistic conclusions for pursuing an all-equity strategy reached by prior research should not be generalized to all such firms.
