Since the beginning of President Clinton's administration, the cigarette industry has been under a lot of pressure to change the way they do business, how they advertise. This study was not intended to be for or against the issue of smoking but to see which variable affects smoking after the consumer makes the adult decision to smoke. Show moreSince the beginning of President Clinton's administration, the cigarette industry has been under a lot of pressure to change the way they do business, how they advertise. This study was not intended to be for or against the issue of smoking but to see which variable affects smoking after the consumer makes the adult decision to smoke. Three different econometric analyses were used to come up with these results; Logit, OLS and Linear Probability Model. The findings indicate that variables like income, pack per week smoked, age, years smoking and gender are significant in determining if an adult consumer continues to smoke. In addition, age, race, and years smoking are good indicators of whether a smoker is or is not price conscious. Years smoking, age, and education of a smoker's mother also have an effect on how much cigarettes an adult smoker consumes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the current level of awareness and use of the Great American Smokeout (GASO) and the extent to which that may vary by lifetime smoking, socioeconomic status, age and gender. We hypothesized and found that the current levels of awareness and use were significantly less than the most recent reports available (over 13 years ago), and that awareness of the GASO was more likely in lifetime smokers, those with more education, and older age groups, but found...

We hypothesized and found that the current levels of awareness and use were significantly less than the most recent reports available (over 13 years ago), and that awareness of the GASO was more likely in lifetime smokers, those with more education, and older age groups, but found no significant effect related to gender. The drop in awareness and use of the GASO was more than half and almost five times, respectively, compared to that of most recent previous reports. These findings highlight a critical need for more attention and resources to reinvigorate the GASO as a useful event for smokers.

Through the analysis of forty interviews and one hundred surveys, I uncovered why individuals smoke and how they rationalize the behavior in spite of known health risks. The four emerging themes as to why individuals smoke were for the creation of self-image, pleasure and relaxation, reinforce social relations and mood maintenance. The two themes regarding the rationalization behind the behavior were "it's better than other vices" argument and the "life is dangerous" argument. Individuals know that smoking is a health risk; however, the way in which individuals rationalize the behavior allows them to continue the behavior.

Abstract/Description

The purpose of this study was to determine whether an educational tobacco intervention impacted college students' perceptions relative to tobacco, self-efficacy, and perceived stress levels. The Health Belief Model (HBM) provided a theoretical framework to distinguish differences relative to tobacco between groups. Both the control (N=155) and intervention (N=184) group consisted of a convenience sample of students from a 2000-level health course. A pre- and post-test questionnaire was...
Show moreThe purpose of this study was to determine whether an educational tobacco intervention impacted college students' perceptions relative to tobacco, self-efficacy, and perceived stress levels. The Health Belief Model (HBM) provided a theoretical framework to distinguish differences relative to tobacco between groups. Both the control (N=155) and intervention (N=184) group consisted of a convenience sample of students from a 2000-level health course. A pre- and post-test questionnaire was administered to both groups which included questions regarding demographics, tobacco use, HBM, self-efficacy, and perceived stress. Data analysis included frequency counts, confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and two-way ANOVA. Two-way ANOVA results indicated statistically significant differences for the Health Belief Model questions (p=0.002) and self-efficacy items (p=0.03). No statistical significance was found regarding perceived stress. These findings provide evidence an educational tobacco intervention administered at the college level can have a significant impact on students.

Abstract/Description

This descriptive comparative research study described the perceived susceptibility and seriousness of smoking-related diseases in young adults. In addition, the perceived benefits and barriers of young adults to quitting smoking were described. This study's framework was based on Rosenstock's Health Belief Model. A random sample of 264 students, ages 18-35, from a Southeastern university completed a 39-item questionnaire on the knowledge of the effects of smoking, perceived susceptibility and...

In addition, the perceived benefits and barriers of young adults to quitting smoking were described. This study's framework was based on Rosenstock's Health Belief Model. A random sample of 264 students, ages 18-35, from a Southeastern university completed a 39-item questionnaire on the knowledge of the effects of smoking, perceived susceptibility and seriousness of smoking-related diseases, as well as the benefits and barriers to quitting smoking. There were significant differences between the smokers' and nonsmokers' responses in the following areas: knowledge of the effects of smoking, perceived seriousness of smoking-related diseases, as well as the benefits and barriers to quitting smoking. Smokers did not believe that smoking was as harmful as the nonsmokers believed it was. In the area of perceived susceptibility smokers and nonsmokers scored relatively similar scores.
