Show moreIntegrated Solid Waste Management systems consist, in order of their occurrence, of source reduction, recycling, composting, combustion, and landfilling. Present theory and practice emphasize recycling as the stage with the greatest potential for dealing with the problem of rapidly growing solid wastes. The central proposition of this dissertation is that the rate of recycling is largely dependent on local political, demographic, economic, and technological conditions. To test this, the recycling rates of 221 counties of Florida, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania were examined. Primary data were gathered using a questionnaire-based survey sent to all 221 county recycling coordinators. An overall response rate of 62.9 percent was achieved. Twenty-four variables were tested for their relationship to recycling rates. Of these, four demographic variables, two economic variables, and four technological variables were identified as being significantly (p<0.05) related to the recycling rates in one or more states. No political variables were found to be significantly related to recycling rates in any state. A recycling model was developed for each state using multiple regression techniques. The Florida and Minnesota models suggest that recycling is highly influenced by local demographic factors, while the Pennsylvania model suggests that in that state the dominant influence is exerted by technological factors. The study developed the importance of the concept of per capita daily generation of municipal solid wastes. This concept, labeled "CMSW" was not found in the literature, but emerged from the study itself. CMSW, combined with the concept of non-recycled CMSW, were highlighted as practical and theoretically relevant variables for use in future research in the area of solid waste management.

Water quality and sediment data were correlated with the distribution and abundance of benthic fauna. Significant differences (ANOVA, a < 0.05) in the physical-chemical conditions were found between the area near the outfall and background conditions in the estuary. Diversity (H') significantly (SNK, P < 0.05) decreased and dominance (c) significantly (SNK, P < 0.05) increased in the area of the outfall. The area surrounding the outfall was dominated by the pollution-tolerant polychaete Capitella capitata which represented a pollution indicator and opportunistic species in this study.

A major issue is lack of consistent means to identify the odors and their intensity. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind direction, wind speed, precipitation accumulation and weather conditions) on the frequency of odor complaints from nearby neighborhoods. Methods involved collection of ten years of data on odor complaints and weather conditions to determine if there were commonalities. Sophisticated statistical analyses employed did not reveal any relationships between odor complaints and weather alone. Need for substantial improvement of detailed information is recognized. To help identify the factors that influence odor complaints- a revised odor complaint form, along with operational adjustments, were recommended. An “Odor Threat Assessment Level” is proposed to assist landfill site personnel in managing daily operations, based on weather conditions.

Show moreA landfill is in a reserved space on land used for the disposal of refuse by utilizing the principles of engineering to confine the refuse to the smallest practical area to prevent the creation of nuisances to public health or safety (Andersen et al. 1967). However, because landfills are open to the atmosphere, rainfall can saturate them, resulting in a liquid called leachate. Leachate generated within the landfill contains suspended solids, soluble components of the waste and by-products from the degradation of the waste by various micro-organisms. Treatment of leachate is an emerging area of need. In this manuscript the main purpose is to investigate a laboratory scale batch reactor that is able to detoxify and treat leachate by using an advanced oxidation process (i.e. TiO2). Based on the results obtained from this ground breaking research, it appears that the process investigate has the potential to radically change the way landfill leachate is treated. Scale up may provide direction that can be used to improve the efficiency of the different stages of toxicity of leachate during the entire life of a landfill.

The potential toxicity of landfill leachate will contaminate groundwater and soil if not managed properly. Research has been made in efforts to manage leachate in a cost-effective, single treatment process. Photocatalytic oxidation is an advanced oxidation process (AOP) which has shown ability to reduce toxicity of an array of leachate constituents including organics, inorganics and heavy metals. The purpose of this manuscript is to scale up the batch scale study of TiO2 photocatalytic degradation of leachate utilizing a pilot scale falling film reactor. In this research project, the use of UV/TiO2 for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, alkalinity and color will be studied in order to optimize catalyst dosage, determine pH effects and reaction kinetics and develop preliminary cost estimates.

Show moreAn analytical investigation was conducted to evaluate the geotechnical safety and stability of MSW landfills constructed with significantly steepened slopes achieved through geosynthetic reinforcement. The primary motivation for this endeavor was to propose a new design/construction methodology for innovative expansion of landfill capacity. A 2-D plane strain linear elastic analysis was performed with ANSYS finite element software on full-scale MSW landfill structures (with and without geogrids), having slopes of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3. Both local and global factors of safety were determined employing the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, and compared with traditional solutions using the Bishop's Modified Method. It was found that the landfill slopes could be steepened up to 1:1 using geogrid reinforcement, resulting in higher storage capacity and consequential environmental and economic benefits.

However, a reported issue with landfill management is the production of leachate, which is a wastewater that is typically too strong to be discharged to municipal wastewater treatment facilities. After reviewing the performance of existing leachate treatment methods, it is clear that an understanding of emerging issues and an all-inclusive solution to long-term management of leachate is currently not available. The goal of this project is to address the lack of viable and sustainable engineering alternatives for handling leachate. One such futuristic technology is called Photochemical Iron Mediated Aeration (PIMA). Based on the Iron Mediated Aeration process, the PIMA process involves the combined oxidation effect of hydroxyl radicals and ultraviolet radiation with the air stripping potential of aeration. The experiments conducted demonstrated promising results but also the lack of maturity of this technique.
