This thesis examines recent explanations of racial violence in the Los Angeles Riots of 1992, the Oldham Riots of 2001, the French Riots of 2005, and the racial violence of 1992 in Germany. In each case I outline traditional theories claiming that racial violence is caused by competition between ethnic groups for housing, jobs, and cultural identity. Show moreThis thesis examines recent explanations of racial violence in the Los Angeles Riots of 1992, the Oldham Riots of 2001, the French Riots of 2005, and the racial violence of 1992 in Germany. In each case I outline traditional theories claiming that racial violence is caused by competition between ethnic groups for housing, jobs, and cultural identity. These theories may benefit from consideration of the historical elements that have institutionalized racial discrimination in the systematic processes of integration. In conclusion, I argue that the governmental mechanisms of integration; including citizenship models, context of state formation, immigration policy, and nationalist ideology, suggest that the framework of racial prejudice and ethnocentrism may predispose a society to racial conflict.

The goal was to promote variation in welfare policies in order to find the most effective way to keep low-income families in the work force and deter teenage pregnancy and family breakup. The goal was to promote variation in welfare policies in order to find the most effective way to keep low-income families in the work force and deter teenage pregnancy and family breakup. Without federal entitlement and federal oversight, black populations may be subject to more restrictive policies and may become the victims of welfare racism. This study examines variation in the generosity of state welfare policies and assesses the role of racism in welfare policy outcomes. This is done using a regression analysis that tests the relationship between the generosity of state welfare policies and state social, political and cultural characteristics. The analysis shows that one area of policy---personal requirements---subjects blacks to more restrictive rules but the overall generosity of welfare programs is most significantly affected by the professionalism of state bureaucrats.

Show moreThis is a study of one of the most controversial public matters concerning race in America today: the African American reparations movement for slavery and segregation. This issue is hotly contested because racial identity and the relative status and well-being of ethnic groups in America, a configuration I refer to as "race as we know it," is inextricably linked to matters of prejudice, pride, property, and public policy both presently and historically. Any substantial shift in the relative position of blacks and whites, America's most iconically opposed groups, promises to alter fundamental dynamics between these two populations, effectively ending "race as we know it," if not racism and racial hierarchy per se. Randall Robinson, author of The Debt, the most important work advocating reparations for African Americans, sees reparations as the means by which to break the historical "habit" of American society of locking most blacks and whites into positions of inferiority and superiority respectively. David Horowitz, author of Uncivil Wars , the most famous refutation of Robinson's argument, sees reparations as an all-out attack on America's "heritage" of racial progress because it threatens today's allegedly "color-blind consensus" with "reverse-racism." So put, these opposed positions express the fundamental fears of many whites and the highest hopes of many blacks. Hence, the conflict over reparations, a struggle over the economics and ethics of equality, is simultaneously and inseparably no less a struggle over the future of race in America. With the societal stake so high, the present study constitutes a much-needed critical scholarly attempt to "save" this public matter from the ideological excesses of these powerfully opposed manifestos. This study will analyze their respective arguments by using a multidisciplinary and comparative framework employing data, concepts, and theories from the disciplines of anthropology, economics, cultural studies, history, political science, and sociology. Its comparative orientation juxtaposes different forms of human bondage, class composition, racial identity and community formation, and political movements. A critical analysis of primary and secondary sources using qualitative and quantitative methods will also be employed.

Responding to the high rate of media consumption among Black youth, the Critical Encounters Unit engaged 79 Black high school students in the southeast United States in examining how they made sense of their media encounters. Data on participants ‘perceptions of the role media plays in constructing Black identities and societal perceptions of Blacks were gathered through pre-post study surveys of all participants‘ self-identities and media literacy, interviews with 15 participants, 467 student journals, and 15 video observation field notes.

Show moreThis study analyzes various forms of visual and textual rhetoric found in popular black-owned print media from 1900-1970, including: beauty product advertisements, magazine cover photography and feature articles in order to contribute to a rhetorical history of color bias within the African-American community. The imagery included here validated and encouraged the transformation and lightening of African-American bodies through what I call embodied mimicry in order to achieve dominance within the racial group and a semblance of acceptance outside of it. Mimicry of white societal standards by African-Americans including: formatting of print media, circulation of beauty ads and physical embodiment of white physical features ultimately re-inscribed the tenets of racism into the black public sphere in the form of colorism. The intention of this research is to analyze the rhetorical history of colorism in order to better understand the current state of colorism in American society.

This study also sought to determine if this relationship was moderated by each school's level, size, letter grade, socioeconomic status (FRL), gender of principal, as well as gender and race of the presiding district superintendent. Lastly, the relationship between each moderator variable and the placement of African American principals was examined. The ultimate objective was to determine if limited opportunities still widely exist in the placement of African American principals throughout Florida. ... From a legal perspective, although Brown and its progeny of civil rights laws valiantly set out to eliminate race and racism from schools and in the workplace, the findings revealed that race continues to be a factor in determining inequity in principal placements.
