Contemporary views on the aesthetics of nature fall into two opposing schools of thought; the cognitive school where philosophers such as Allen Carlson believe that science can explain everything about the aesthetics of nature, and the non-cognitive where, for example, Arnold Berleant maintains that science is a sufficient though not a necessary condition for the aesthetic appreciation of nature. Show moreContemporary views on the aesthetics of nature fall into two opposing schools of thought; the cognitive school where philosophers such as Allen Carlson believe that science can explain everything about the aesthetics of nature, and the non-cognitive where, for example, Arnold Berleant maintains that science is a sufficient though not a necessary condition for the aesthetic appreciation of nature. Berleant and others of his kind contend that an engaged multi-sensuous relationship with nature will manifest the required experience. Empathy with nature, specifically primal empathy is the focus of this research, but empathy can only be experienced from a phenomenological perspective. I have walked over two hundred miles in over 70 Florida state parks, including an autumn trip to Vermont and back. During this journey I came to experience a personal connection (empathy) with nature that I now believe is grounded in holism and a methodology of the sublime leading to the beautiful. The main conclusions derived from this research are: self-realized individuals will experience the connection I speak of more quickly than those who are not, and the genius nature artist through a creative act grounded in primal empathy can reveal the Ideas or Forms of nature to those who would otherwise never experience them. This research also concludes that empathy with nature, specifically primal empathy, is a new element that can reduce the cleft and help unify the two opposing views.

Show moreWith the commitment of a nineteenth century objectivist scientist, I established a rigorous methodology in my studio practice through drawing, cutting and sorting that asserts meticulous attention to and recording of detail. This resulted in an overwhelming accumulation of components - pieces of information that no longer functioned to create the "whole." Interested in how information adds up to meaning, I am preoccupied with sorting out meaning from my accumulations. With each work, I create a map that works less to mark a destination than to structure a journey. No longer "lost" in the details, these accumulated works effect a "whole" where the inflection of my hand in each discreet decision I made adds up to marking my place. This offers the viewer the possibility that asserting one's place is meaning enough.

Show moreThroughout history magic has been an art that has instilled awe and wonder in its spectators. The magician used to be held in high esteem, as teacher, as scientist, as priest and even as philosopher. This being the case, throughout the history of philosophy, philosophers have deemed magic to be deception, to be a mode of misleading people into believing what is not true. Through the modern philosophical era, philosophers have been seeking a purely scientific method for questioning reality. It seems that, today, even the magician views his or her art as mere entertainment. The purpose of my thesis is to dispel the belief that magic is purely a hobby with no artistic value and that, like other artworks, magic too can cause one to question existence.

Show moreWe each experience the world through the prism of our upbringing, our traditions and the familiar sights and sounds embedded deep within our soul. Only Sound Remains is an installation in which I explore and share those experiences through objects, sounds and video. Ceramic vessels inspired by the traditions of my ancestors hide and shape sounds that narrate simple and complex experiences, which are the stories of my life. The sounds relate to the world that I came from and that still can be heard now. The sounds are not clear until one gets close to the vessels and lifts the lid-- a bazaar, praying, marching, an explosion, a woman telling a story, traditional Iranian music. The installation is a metaphor for the way in which we experience the world. The vessels represent a selection of personal and cultural experiences through sounds that may or may not be fully understood.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to compare the aesthetic tastes of subjects with formal design training to the aesthetic tastes of the general population. The Graves Design Judgment Test was used as the Design Knowledge set of data in this correlational Ex post facto study. The visual art stimuli were chosen by a panel of art experts using dual 7 point bipolar scales for realism and design. Visual art stimuli were reproduced from various worldwide gallery and museum collections. A diverse set of art stimuli subject matter was used to minimize content preference by subjects. A multivariate analysis of variance, a correlation matrix, regression analysis, and principle components were used to statistically discern a significant difference between the groups studied. The group with a high cognate knowledge of design showed a preference for non-objective or abstract art more than the group without cognate design knowledge. Analysis of variance found a significant difference at the .05 level between the two groups' preferences for non-objective art but revealed no significant difference at the .05 level for either group's preferences for realism. The results of this study are consistent with earlier art preference research describing differences in trained and untrained subjects' preferences.

In Broward County, as in many school systems across the nation, programs in music and the other arts are finding themselves reduced because of curtailed funding. The problems are constantly debated by school board members and top administration officials. Meanwhile, young people are deprived of music. A major concern of the music community has been an inability to propose a truly self-justifying curriculum. Therefore, an aesthetically based curriculum supplement has been developed with the intention of cementing the place of music in the overall elementary school curriculum. This will be a major approach to curriculum building with instruction, which will include music theories, musical styles and periods, musicians, composition and historical facts. The objective is to create an understanding of music, establishing music as an integral part of school curriculum.

By mastering the art of articulation and vocalization, by transforming their bodies and their environment, these actors created their own agency. The female actors lived the life of the characters they portrayed, which were full of multicultural models from various social and economic classes. Somaesthetics, as a focus of sensory-aesthetic appreciation and somatic awareness, provides a pragmatic approach to understanding the unique way in which the woman of the early modern Spanish stage, while dedicating herself to the art of acting, challenged the negative cultural and social constructs imposed on her. Drawing from early modern plays and treatises on the precepts and practices of the acting process, I use somaesthetics to shed light on how the actor might have prepared for a role in a comedia, selfconsciously cultivating her body in order to meet the challenges of the stage.

This treatise discusses one of the primary aspects of Beethoven's influence on later generations: the way that his symphonies contributed to the expansion of the genre and, consequently, to the development of the orchestra. Included is a detailed analysis of his nine symphonies, an overview of his personal life, and an exploration of the historical, social, and political time in which he lived. This thesis collects and examines relevant documents in order to inquire about and better understand the changes and innovations that transformed the standard orchestra of the eighteenth century, opening the doors to the symphonic music of the Romantic Era.

This study will examine the use of landscape metaphors in two major works of fin de siáecle literature, Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Olive Schreiner's The Story of an African Farm, in order to reveal how these texts critique and re-vision the social dualities of gender. A wide range of literary theories-including, feminist theory, semiotics, and ecocriticism-are used to interpret these authors' influential narratives. This thesis will also apply Julia Kristeva's theory of the abjects-representing the permeability of the physical and social bodies-to critically examine the literal and metaphorical landscapes of Stevenson's city and Schreiner's farm. Thus, these visionary texts embody an organic and feminist understanding of the self as a permeable social construct that exists free of borders.
